No OpenGapps, No TWRP, after ResurrectionRemix Success - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I finally succeeded in ROM'ing my phone, Samsung Galaxy S4 I9505. I'm now running RR-N-v.5.8.3-20170502-jfltexx-Official.
I used TWRP to ROM my phone. During the ROM process I also installed OpenGapps and selected "Install TWRP on Reboot If It's Not There Yet". But, I was nevertheless left with a phone without any GoogleApps and without TWRP. I tried to install open_gapps-arm-7.1-aroma-20170324.zip and it seemed to be going well. I was presented with the "what do you want to install" screen. I went with the defaults. In this case did the defaults mean "install nothing?"
Questions:
How do I install the correct version of TWRP?
What is the correct version of OpenGapps and how do I install it?
I also need to install Titanium Backup?
I have Android SDK and ADB installed on my Linux laptop. I briefly tried it out and it seemed cool, and it communicated with my Android device.

You already HAVE TWRP installed. Without TWRP you can't flash any ROMs, gapps or any other shenanigans. So if you say you don't have TWRP, how did you flash the ROM?
Default gapps are a BIG package. You may not have enough space for it. Besides, do you even need every single Google app present in the default package? I doubt it. The only thing you truly need is the Play Store and the framework to make it work. Everything else is optional and can be downloaded from said Play Store.

Thanks, this time I successfully rebooted to TWRP and did the GApps install again. This time I did Checked-And-Green to select the Gapps I want. But I still don't see any Gapps in the launcher. Why is that?

Oops, I installed GApps Stock version, I was glad to see the apps successfully intalling, but now it's like I have a Google Phone. Many Google Apps I don't need or use. Now I'll have to re-Flash RR and figure out how to install only the Google Apps I want (Google Play app store, Inbox, and a few others). Mainly Google Play so I can install Titanium Backup. Maybe I'll see if I can download an APK for Titanium Backup and then restore the apps I want.

try the nano GApps package, or micro package.
they have just what you need.
or try the aroma package, in the Aroma package you get to choose what you want to install.

Open Gapps Micro still begins the first reboot in a Google phone mode, that's disappointing. Also, I'm required to type in fields like Gmail address and password, but apparently I don't have a keyboard app only entry by voice. And I am unable to enter the email address because it does not allow me to vocally spell an email address. I liked the Resurrection Remix theme and launcher. How do I get back to that after I flash Open Gapps?

the "Google phone" expression you're saying is a must have in all android devices, if I'm not wrong you're referring to the setup wizard, the setup wizard is there no matter what phone you have, if you factory reset you start with a similar setup wizard.
the keyboard issue isn't a GApps fault, it's a ROM fault, keyboard should exist no matter what GApps you flashed, anyway if you want to skip the setup wizard, then try flashing the ROM only and let it boot then double check everything including the keyboard, after that boot into recovery and flash GApps.
the phone should now boot with GApps installed and you will directly see the lock screen of the phone...(no setup wizard)

Use the smallest package and download what you need from the play store. I already suggested this in my first reply when I said "you don't need the full package".

Open Gapps Aroma worked better this time. I selected only the Gapps I thought I need, but it was a complete enough selection that when I was given the Set-Up-Your-Google-Account I had a keyboard to fill in the fields. Then I selected the Trebuchet launcher which is the RR one I liked. Then I began restoring my apps using Titanium Backup. So far things are going well.
In Gapps Aroma, to install the app, it has to be checked off and green. The default, checked off and grey, means it will not be installed. That's confusing.

System apps missing

On cm7 , but my system apps are missing, even though I've separately installed them 100 times. The installation process in recovery seems successful, but still no google apps after reboot.

meaning you installed the gapps update.zip correct?
Correct. if i go to setting-applications-manage I have the market and market updater listed but with all the options greyed out. No sign of.gmail or other gapps.
Fix permissions, then try again.
I recommend fixing via ROM Manager, because it appears to do a more thorough job...
Go to the market and downlad the Google apps you want. You're installing the tiny gapps zip and that's what it is supposed to do.
If I recall you have to flash that google add on pack to get the google apps. When you do this you'll reboot and setup your google account.
Go read the initial installation directions and see what it says.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
I have had this issue with other apps which I flashed to /system from recovery, flashing successful only to see them not come in the app drawer and then I realized that I had bad sectors in /system and just flashing CM7 eats up all the /system , I have created a thread about that here. may be of help to you.

[Q] Market & Gapps install?

I rooted and installed CM7[.0.3]. I attempted to install gapps at the same time, but they didn't appear after I booted my NC with CM7. So I was wondering, how do I go about installing gapps at this point?
i'd like to know as well
Did you set up your wifi before installing gapps?
You will need to be connected to Wifi for them to show up. After you flashed them in CWM and are connected to wifi, usually a "set-up" type thing appears which allows you to log into your Google account and choose what specific applications you want installed.
If that doesn't happen, when connected to wifi, go to Settings > Accounts & Sync > Add account > Add Google Account. After this, hopefully the set up should run.
I tried adding an account, but for some reason I'm getting an error message.
CM7 v7.0.3 No Google Market
I have installed CM7 v 7.0.3 successfully, and tried first GAPPs v.20110307 then v.20110613. Neither produced the Google Market. I also cannot set up my gmail account nor my yahoo account. Wifi on and great signal. Tried install, and when no market, restored to factory nook. Reinstalled CM7 and Gapps, and still no market or prompt to set up the Google account. I've searched till my eyes are bleeding and I have yet to find a suitable answer that works. Not sure whether to give up or continue to troubleshoot. If you have a solution, please share it. Please provide detailed instructions since I am a noob and you know how we are.
Thanks...Liz

[Q] Play store problem

Hi all, mainly Blefish,
I have problem with play store. I tried many versions of Gapps, but every single one with android 4.4.4 od 5 (from legacyhuawei) had given me same problem. I wipe everything excepr ext SDcard, flash rom, flash gapps, run phone, add wifi, add account, skip CM account and when I try to look for some apps on play store, it fails.
play store tells me "no connection" and i can "try again".
I checked hosts file, it's fine (only localhost to 127.0.0.1)
I checked date and time, it is synced with network.
I tried to clear cache, to disable play store, reboot, enable...
Nothing worked.
What can I do?
Blefish's roms seems to be fine, but without gapps I can'T do anything.
If Gapps has gmail, it synces, get mails, but sometimes tells that sync fails.
I really don't know.
Thanks for help.
Bottomline:
it's U8800.
I will really love to see @Blefish if he can find anything usable. Maybe I am just using bad gapps, because gapps source thread mentioned in his rom thread is abandoned and wiped.

The latest gapps can be donnloaded here (for 5.1) http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/gapps-google-apps-minimal-edition-t2943330
If you want to use cm-11, then http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53319258
Otherwise I am not quite sure why it would do something like this. Any logs to provide?

Hi @Blefish,
Yes, I wrote to you on legacyhuawei too when I tried Lollipop.
I would like to send some logs, but I don't know what to log and how to log it. Is there any information that can help you? Some thread or something?
Thanks.
I tried exactly that gapps you provided now, but with same issues. Account logged, play store cant connect.

Absolute easiest way to install Google Play on 5.8

There have been several ways bantered about and many are still having no luck. I have done it several different ways and it has worked for me. To make it work you need five different APK's. They are Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Google Services Framework, Google Calendar Sync, and Google Contacts Sync. You can download these individually from APK mirror (http://www.apkmirror.com/) or download the Google Installer_V2.0 for MIUI (http://xiaomitips.com/download/google-installer-app/). This is an all in one installer and is in Chinese, but if you just select the button at the bottom of the app, the install will start. Do not open any of the services yet when the APK's install. You will need to reboot your device at the point everything is installed.
Upon reboot, simply select Google Play and login. I hope this helps. When you install the rom, via TWRP, make sure everything is deleted and to are doing a clean install. You can then install SuperSu for root. It already has a Chinese version installed, but when I ran root required apps, I was notified that root was not installed. Once you have root, you can uninstall all the Le-bloat.
Hello. I installed the 5.8.015S ROM, but when i want to install the Gapps or play store, is not working, constantly it gives me an error message, (something with Le Eco....) and i pass through normaly, only with I reinstall the ROM. I don't make a full wipe (i'm afraid to connect the phone without any operating system installed because i don't know if is possible to see the phone in PC ). Now, i'm without Play store and other else...
There can't be anything, such as Google accounts on you device or the install will fail. That is why I suggest a clean wipe.
Today I installed the 5.8 ROM to the phone. I try several days before, but everytime the play store it takes me errors which need to reinstal the ROM. First time (some days ago) i installed the ROM after 5.6.0.13S, only with cache and dalvik wiped. Not any chances. After that, i reinstall, again only with cache and dalvik wiped, and i try different GAPPS from opengapps.org (pico, nano, micro, mini, full), and i try the Google Installer V2 for MIUI (Xiaomi). No chance to work, every time it take me errors with "google play stop working, please send the error message" on a blank page, and i don't have any possibilities to pass through, only to reinstall the ROM. So, today I wipe everything from phone, (cache, dalvik, data, system, internal storage, everything) I say: one of two, or it works, or i brick the phone After that, began the fun ) It take some time, almost half day I can't see the phone with adb try diferent drivers, diferent commands in command window When i put the phone in Fastboot Mode, not comunicate with PC. When it was in TWRP, the adb it detects, but I was unable to push something in internal memory, in one specifical folder, only in /root. So, i put the 5.8.015S and the Super-SU on /root and i install with TWRP first the ROM and after the Super-SU. Reboot, and i put the Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Google Services Framework, Google Calendar Sync, and Google Contacts Sync from apkmirror (Thanks to jim262 ). I follow the steps from first post and from message received from jim262, I DON'T OPEN ANY OF THESE UNTIL FINISH AND REBOOT, and after that the playstore is working. HOWEVER, WHEN I TRY TO UPDATE SOME APPS, I RECEIVE THE ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAY GOOGLE PLAY IS STOP WORKING. But is not stopped, only the message appear, and i have possibilities to close that message. And the contact sync is not work, i don't know why. Maybe because i freeze some LeEco bloatware with Titanium Backup....Same thing with Application Permision....
Go into settings, account management, your Google account and check to see that the sync is on for your contacts.
To make contact sync work, download and install this APK :
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-...-apk-download/
After that, go to settings, App management, look for "Google contacts Sync", Permissions, and "tick" Contacts
Now it should work.
There is an even easier way, install either the Indian version of the stock rom or Team Spain's Revolution Rom. Both work, run 5.8_15s and do not have the Chinese bloat, plus have Google Play pre-installed.

(Guide) De-chinese Stock KIW-AL10 (3GB VERSION) and make it Google friendly

This is a guide to debloat the KIW-AL10 and make stock Chinese usable.
First download Minimal adb and fastboot from here and install it.
Download HISuite and use that to install huawei drivers
Next Make sure developer options by hitting build number 7 times then open developer options and make sure usb debugging is activated in the developer options.
Plug phone into computer and install drivers, any unknown device will be adb so right click and select choose driver from list then select android devices then adb interface, always choose the older driver version for this phone.
One you have that installed you need to unlock your bootloader a great guide is here
Once you have unlocked the bootloader download install twrp using minimal adb and fastboot
First reboot into fastboot..
First check the device is present. using the command :adb devices
then boot into bootloader using the command : adb reboot-bootloader
if that doesn't work turn off device then switching on quickly hold down the volume down button while inserting the cable into the device
The device should then have a white screen with a robot and say unlocked in green writing
find the recovery image you downloaded and if its a different name rename it twrp.img so you know which one it is, files everywhere can get quite messy !
Now right click on the minimal adb link on the desktop and click open file location..
Now put the twrp.img file into the folder with the minimal adb files and close the window.
now flash the recovery using the command: fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Voila if everything is sucessful your phone now has twrp recovery !
Next use the following command: adb reboot recovery, if that doesnt work force a shutdown by holding the power button then let the phone boot while holding down the volume up button, it should boot into recovery.
Next MAKE A BACKUP THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AND WHEN ITS DONE COPY IT TO A SAFE DRIVE DO NOT KEEP IT JUST ON YOU SD CARD IN CASE YOUR CARD DIES ! BECAUSE OF THE NATURE OF THIS PHONE AND THE FACT THAT YOU CANT FLASH NON VOLTE ROMS ON THIS PHONE THIS IS YOUR ONLY WAY OF RESTORING THE PHONE SO GUARD IT LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT !
Now get a cup of coffee and have a break its not good to rush things
Now to root your phone..
Finish your coffee.
Download supersu from here
Put the zip onto your phones sd card and boot into recovery, select install and select the supersu zip and let it install, once done reboot the phone, it may reboot a few times thats normal dont panic, once the phone has finished booting check you have the su app installed, if so now we can do the rest of the stuff.
Next download google play store from here and install it
After opening the play store and signing in you will probably be told to update google services, let it do it then reboot the phone
Next using the play store download root explorer
Next stage is to make the dialer English. and remove yellow pages.
Using root explorer navigate to /cust/alltelecom/cn/prop
hard press on the file local.prop and select open in text editor using the 3 dots on the top right
Look for the following lines of code ro.product.locale.region=CN or similar
Change this to ro.product.locale.region=GB (or whatever your location is such make sure the country code is in CAPS )
Save the file
Now navigate to /system and open build.prop in text editor and change the following lines of code so they end in County matching code not cn
Example
ro.product.locale.region=GB (or whatever your location is such )
ro.product.locale.language=en (or whatever your location is such )
ro.product.locale.region=GB
Go slow there is lots of lines there but you will see them if you take your time
select save and exit from root explorer then reboot.. viola the chinese and yellow pages is gone !
After reboot you may get a baidu warning about location tracking, dont panic we will kill that bugger next !
Next install system app safe remover from the play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jumobile.manager.systemapp&hl=en_GB I always use this as its simple and keeps a backup of the removed app (just in case of problems)
Use that to remove all the chinse apps from the system including hivoice or it will interfere with google assistant, they are self explanatory
as they are all in chinese !
Next remove hi app
hi care
huawei id
network location (this is the one causing the nag screen dont worry work it will still work.
then reboot phone, there should be no more warnings about baidu location.
Now to get services google working.
You my have notice that despite installing a google account you contacts havent synced. we will fix that now..
To get google contacts to sync you need to install google contacts sync adaptor 6.0.1 from here
After you have installed it open up system apps and check it permision contacts is allowed, also open the battery setting and check it runs at boot and while screen is off, if there are no options for that ignore that bit and exit.
while you are there check google play services permission are all on especially contacts then reboot
Now install the google app from the app store
next install google assistant from the play store
now install google photos from the play store
Next install google chrome from play store
next install google calendar from the play store
next install google plus from the play store
next install google maps from the play store
next install youtube from the play store
Next install gboard from the play store
Then when all is done reboot the phone
After reboot check all the permissions of the apps and make sure all the google apps run at boot and keep running after screen off or they wont sync etc then reboot again.
Change horrible huawei keyboard to gboard in language settings
Open the google app and setup google and check your contacts have synced. set up the rest of your settings
Get a decent launcher as the huawei one sucks I use nova launcher prime its worth every penny but the free one is still good
Open settings app and click advanced, here you can change default launcher and select default app setting then select assistance and voice input, selectassist app as google select use text from screen and select use screenshot
I think that pretty much it, the rest you should be able to do yourself, have fun and good luck, any questions just ask.
I wrote this guide as there is very little info on the AL10,
Happy modding !
Very useful
Very useful post, my first venture into phone modding, enabled me to use my KIW-AL10 with Google functionality and to avoid the worst excesses of the stock Chinese software. Thanks!

Thanks for the thanks ! glad it was of use to you, I wrote another guide which enables volte to be removed and put lineage os on instead which you may find useful, its a fairly lengthy process but foolproof and doesn't brick the phone which was my main concern as there is nowhere to download the stock roms for these 3gb variants, cheers

So, the phone worked ok for a month, but then started restarting itself all the time. I deleted loads of apps, but it didn't solve the problem. Now, I decided to try to solve the problem by installing a custom ROM, so first step was to wipe the phone with TWRP. After wiping, I no longer had root access, and now installing SuperSU doesn't work, I can install the .zip through TWRP recovery, but I still don't have root access afterwards, according to Root Checker. Any ideas? Thanks!

OK, so I have tried quite a few times to install Lineage OS 14.1 and Viper, with both they get stuck in a bootloop. Trying to install Lineage with this guide https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/kiwi/install, the 'format data' stage is not successful. I get a message saying ' E:Unable to wipe '/data' - unknown file system 'auto Unable to format to remove encryption '.
I'm not totally committed to a custom ROM, but I'd like this phone to work. Any ideas, either how to troubleshoot the ROM flashing issue, or to get the phone stable with the stock de-Chinesed stock ROM? Thanks!
