I've been using this so successfully thought I'd make a video on it. I've used many VR goggles for this phone and they all fall short of the comfort and functionality the experience offers using the Gear VR with the G4.

The controller I use has 4 modes. It's works well for me but I think there are better ones out there because this one doesn't work with Minecraft. But nevertheless here is the one I use:
Nyko Playpad Pro for Android/Bluetooth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0092ZEINO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_3Gcmzb4ZEXM7E
One more question, is it possible to charge the phone while in use?
i dont know i made a thread a long time back how i modded a gear vr to use a otg cable so i could hook my ps3/ps4 control to my g4 in vr mode and it worked great
ofcoarse my version was a little rigged but worked like a dream on a lot of non vr in vr games nes emulators even my ps2 emulator run good some old skool silent hill

I never thought about that possibility until you asked so I just tried it yesterday and I couldn't get the phone to charge while I was using it in the headset. So no, you cannot charge it like you would a Samsung phone while in use in the unit.

I grabbed a Gear VR 2016 (SMR323) yesterday and it seems the Goggles USB connector doesn't get seated well in G4 port due to tightness especially screen side.
When I have time I'll try modding it, start with removing/filing the grey plastic layer. @TheMadScientist420 mod could work bu it's kinda extreme
Found this on Oculus site
Connecting a Charger [Optional]
For a longer Gear VR session, connect a charger to the charging port on the underside of the Gear VR headset.
Depending on your current usage, the Gear VR handles power differently while connected to a charger. As a result, the mobile battery may or may not charge while in use.
If the app or the content you're using requires a lot of power, the Gear VR may draw power simultaneously from the mobile device battery as well as from the charger.
In general, though, the Gear VR won't draw from the mobile device’s battery whenever it's connected to a charger.
When the Gear VR is connected to a charger and isn't in active use, it will always charge the mobile device battery.

Not that it's directly applicable in this case (Gear VR), one could always try an OTG USB hub with a charging function. It's doesn't work on all phones/tablets but at least it feeds the other connected USB peripherals hindering draining your phone/tablet's battery!

I bought a microusb to HDMI cable (Samsung P/N ECC1HU0BBE but not from Samsung, from some other random place) to see if it would work. It does not appear to work on my phone. I'm running the stock ROM, just rooted with the bloat removed.
I plugged it into an HDTV here at work, checked "TV out" in settings, and nothing. TV said it didn't see any input. I was dubious about this, especially since there's an option in there for NTSC/PAL which AFAIK doesn't apply to HDMI. This leads me to believe that maybe the TV out option is for something more like the classic ipod style analog video out through the headphone jack cable.
I tried: just checking the "TV out" box, switching between PAL and NTSC, restarting the phone with the cable connected, etc.
So, there's my anecdotal report. I'm guessing that our phone doesn't support this cable. I thought I had one of the latter (analog video) type in a box of cords somewhere but haven't been able to find it yet. Has anyone tried one of those cables?
(I'd post links to the cable I'm talking about but it won't let me! D
drat.
Maybe it only works with specific apps-- Did you try playing a movie in the built-in video player app?

You could have gotten a faulty cable. It's also possible the cable was assembled by some random joe making and selling junk cables. Where did you get it from? It may be a fake samsung cable and not true oem.

The cable I have looks exactly like that, down to the little plug symbol by the microusb port on the side. Also you'll notice that the part number you list is the same as the one I did but with an "STD" on the end. The page you linked me is where I started my search for this cable. The cable itself doesn't have any part numbers on it that I've found.
If it doesn't work on my TV at home either I'll take it apart and we'll see what's in there. I can't imagine much.
So, who knows? Maybe I have a knockoff, broken or wrong cable. If so, bummer for me, but that means that we still have the possibility of HDMI out on this device. So, someone buy that cable straight from Samsung (whenever they decide to start selling it) and prove me wrong! I'd be very happy
I bought the same cable and tryed everything...
I am not sure if it is a software issue or what. But it definitely is not sending signal threw this port. Tried a many different programs/apps and settings.
I thought "TV Out" was only for the analog video signal through the 3.5 mm jack.
where did you guys buy the cable?
just want to know
Thank You
It could be the cable. I had to buy a specific cable for my Greddy Emanage since they did something to switch the USB cable to make it proprietary. They charged $30 for the stupid thing too! Bunch of BS, anyhow, they may have done the same thing with the Vibrant.
I dont remember hearing anything about the Vibrant doing HDMI out though
i used an old 3.5 to rca cables from a motozine i had and video worked just fine on my tv. it kind of looks like crap on my 52 inch screen. but it worked. so im thinking maybe the video out only works through the 3.5 jack.
The Galaxy S doesnt support HDMI output. That was a accident statement from Samsung. That cable is for the "mondi".

Hmm. I wonder if it works on the Sprint Epic 4G, or on the international I9000. (There are several Galaxy S features that T-Mobile and AT&T have disabled, but which appear in other variants.)
What is the quality of the 3.5mm tv out..is it horrible? On youtube videos it looks really good, but its hard to tell by youtube. Will it look quite good on a 46" panasonic plasma?...no hdmi news is quite depressing, was really looking forward to that.

An easier and much less ridiculous looking option would be to have a holder integrated in to the controller so that you could mount the phone over the buttons.

It's been done. I've seen about 4 different variants of the same idea, here is one.

And here is another.

Additionally, just get yourself a PSP, Vita, or DS. The games are much better, and if you're going to carry around something like a ps3 controller or whatever, you might as well carry around a real gaming device.
(I used to carry a datel retro wiipad or a ps3 controller to play emulated games.....but trust me, ladies would much rather see you playing a PSP, and even that is a curse)
Seems like it would be better just to pick up an Xperia Play, no?

If you're wanting to do the mod yourself...
I'd recommend instead of "splitting" the controller (which requires additional wires, soldering, and a new enclosure for the PCB), to take the other products' idea and make a "dock-like" style.
The only thing you would need to "mod" would be to add the dock foundation near the usb port of the controller, but it must accommodate the contours of the controller and the phone. And you would need to solder a converting usb plug (from the controller usb to your phone usb, which is most likely two different kinds). That way, whenever you slide your phone into the dock part, the soldered, converted usb plug automatically fits into your phone and the controller now supports the weight of your phone.

Seems like the only easy way for now. Splitting a controller would be intensely boring with a nice chance of failure, need augmented vision to really solve this issue....FTW
I bought one of these, http://www.amazon.com/Breffo-Spiderpodium-Stand-iPhone-Cellphone/dp/B003O1V5CY.
I use my Photon 4G with my Sixaxis controller on the bus just about every day. I found if you bend the legs too much right where they attach to the body, they will snap, and hang loosely. But I called Breffo, sent them my Amazon receipt, and they sent me a new one, no charge.
For me, it's the best solution.
I was using this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw_UBLt-Ckk, but it eventually broke, and it was heavy as hell. The Breffo is lighter.

Hello guys!
I'm using Xperia Z1 C6903 with LB (UB doesn't give me enough to lose all those camera features).
If you're a vaper (smoking e-cigarettes), then I have great news for you!
I'm using THIS e-cigarette and if you buy USB OTG cable you can use your phone as a power bank!
This is more than awesome! Just imagine, your e-cig runs out of power, you are on the move. All you have to do is to pull out usb-mini usb cable (for ecig) and USB OTG cable.

and it is charging!
I don't know how well it works YET as I came up with this idea just today. I'll try with charging X10 Mini pro and I'll let you know if it works. I've seen some kernels (doomkernel) which has bumped USB power output.
I think more people should try it and let us all know what else they could charge with USB OTG.
I'll update this thread with the list of what can you charge (more or less) and with what kernel.
Stock kernel:
e-cigarette with USB pass-through - works great!
stereo Bluetooth headset (SBH50) - works great and doesn't use much of the phone battery to fully charge!
iPhone 4 - charges
Let me know what kernel are you running and what you could charge (if it actually charges sth, not just shows up charging) - I'll put it up regardless if it shows charging or if it's actually charging.

Well, If you're addicted and you can't smoke for a few hours and you don't have a strong will then charging your e-cig instead of buying cigarettes is a great idea. It's even better if you can charge that e-cig using YOUR PHONE!
It's nothing new that it outputs power, but it is new (for me at least) that you can actually charge stuff out of your phone. Z1 carries massive battery (3000 mAh), so you actually can use your phone as a charger with light phone usage.
Please don't quote the entire thread next time.

Its easy, just sort your head out.
Well, it does use current high enough to charge stuff. It won't output higher current than the kernel cap. It's perfectly safe for the device. @gregbradley - good for you, I don't have a will that's strong enough to just quit it. Can we get back on topic now, please?

Interesting. I actually tried this with S4 and Galaxy S w/ CM11 and S4 told me that I can transfer photos, Galaxy S /w CM11 automatically mounted itself in MSC mode. Just like you would connect it to the PC.
That's actually interesting. Which tablet is it with what rom/kernel? I could try to modify OTG interface on the Z1 or disable data transfer on the device that's meant to be charged, so you could switch between charging/data transfer. I thought that's not possible to charge a phone with another.
I tried with a stereo Bluetooth headset (SBH50) and it charged without any problem. It just went from 72% to 68% in my z1's battery and the headset charged almost fully.

(B&O Hifi plus + QWERTY/Z pad or a device to use multiple sim cards actively (business, privat, data package etc.) Since LG is allowing third party companys to make their own module for the LG G5 there is the potential for good and useless things.

I see, that's good. I honestly doubt it comes with an unlocked bootloader but if it is an unlocked version hopefully it comes with unlocked bootloader as well, isn't it possible to just root and unlock in the future though?
A super extended battery with high res audio. If I could get that and cm13, I would declare this the best android device ever made.

How do they expect people to use cases with these modules? Will the cases have cutouts or would you need a special case for each module?

Perhaps some kind of frame case that has adjustable parts.

I think the modules are imbedded in the lg framework so I don't think they will work on cm

That HiFi DAC + a different and bigger battery = win.
I'd love to see a trackball module like the one on the good old Nexus One and maybe also a USB host type-A module (although it'll be bulky as hell...)
A landscape oriented physical keyboard of course!!! I would love to develop the hardware and software for this and make it a kickstarter if LG is actually open to 3rd party modules (no idea yet?).
I would love a case that connects to the module with an extended battery and maybe a second screen on the back of it, like an e-paper one. That'd be legit
I'm surprised to see that my idea was already mentioned by @onRecord (great minds...), because I fully acknowledge that's it's... a little crazy (but just enough to work!) I think it would be awesome to have an extended display module. I really like the modularity of the G5, but I've had Notes for a while now, and just prefer bigger displays. I'm thinking that the existence of a module that extends the screen about half an inch or a bit more and also contains as much extra external battery as could fit would very possibly convince me to swap my Note 4 for a G5. Usage-wise, it would be sweet to put the soft nav keys and dock on the extension.
It doesn't seem very likely that something like this will ever exist, but I was just thinking what modules would be cool and that was one of the first to come to mind. In any case, props to LG for releasing this legitimately innovative modular feature!
Capacitive buttons +1
An external gaming GPU ? Slide keyboard and a small trackpad would be awesome! Maybe storage moduel? Game controls?(it could be inserted like a phone case!)
Extended battery would be the best xD specially since g5 has a small battery! I wished it had an internal small battery just to last 20-10s for changing the battery without needing to restartit!
A moduel with full size USBs could also be useful! Maybe a moduel with improved wi fi and phone antenna!
(Sorry for typos I'm typing on my phone)

Hi I have a 2016 gear vr with usb type C and I'm thinking of getting the new galaxy s8, so I was wondering if the 2016 gear vr will work on the galaxy s8 or not?
I was just about to post the exact same question and it brought me here!
I have the 2016 VR too, but searching the web doesn't bring up any answers as to whether it will work with the S8. I think the S8+ might be too big for it but the S8 isn't far from the size of the S7 Edge.
Hoping someone can confirm this.
.
It might work..not sure though. I compared the s8+ to my note 7 and it's almost the exact same width and slightly taller.

Note 7 153.50 x 73.90 x 7.90
S8+ 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 millimeters (height, width, and depth, respectively).

If you have the usb c connection, it'll work just fine. I got mine second hand with only the micro usb connector. Was able to find the usb c one on ebay and it works great with the s8 Not sure of the s8+ though as I can't test.
Thanks

I just checked but the seller I got mine from has no stock. Can't find anymore listings for it on ebay either. Part number is GH98-40350A. The connector would have come with your gear vr. Usually it'll have the micro usb one installed and the usb c one in the box

I can confirm that the Gear VR that became available with the Note 7 works with the S8 Plus. There are two [2] positions that can be selected before inserting the S8 Plus. I use the one closer marked A. The one marked B is too tight and does not work. See my image here:

It won't work with the S8+ the adapter makes it too long g to fit, nearly an inch or more longer than it'd need to be to work. I have the S8+ and 2016 VR which I was told would work because the adapter to USB C wraps around d the USB micro making it no longer...well the T-Mobile rep was wrong so I'll be going in today to see what they can do so since that's the only reason I upgraded from my S7 Edge. I'm pissed..

The 2016 Gear VR (SM-R323, I believe) works flawlessly with the S8. I got mine off of ebay from someone who got their Gear VR with an S7 but never even opened the box. There was a USB-C connector already attached to the Gear VR from the box and also a separate exchangeable MicroUSB connector for older models.
I have both, the one that came out in 2016 with Note 7 and the one with S8. They seem to be identical in size and the only difference is the remote control, which older gear didn't come with. Make sure you have proper connector attached (there are 2) and adjust position to either A or B, depending on size of the phone. I didn't even notice width adjustment until very recently
Hi. I have S8+ and gear vr 2016. The vr is exactly the same as the 2017 version, just different colour. You can get a usb c connector on eBay and it will work as it should:laugh:

You need to get a USB c connector, not use the white one that comes on the box. I have done it and it works
Sheenswizner you need to get the one on the left
