My hat goes off to hauwei and Google for building this handset.
I have been using a galaxy s6 for the past year rooted and tweaked to the best of my knowledge and what could be mustered with the closed source and exynos7420. I have been using the 6P for two days and honestly I'm considering something I thought I wouldn't try...... Stock no root. I have always rooted my devices and played round with them built a popular rom back in the gt540 days but this phone this beast I'm actually considering stock.
So my question currently cyanogenmod shows nightly builds but no stable builds, so unofficial at best and it looks to be the same for a lot of other roms as cm seems to be the major base for 90% of roms now, so what are currently the advantages of these builds or the builds based off stock?
Obviously there is adaway and Xposed and viper4android but in terms of build performance battery life and stability is it worth moving off stock atm?

CM definitely isn't the base for most (or even a small percentage) of ROMs on a Nexus, most ROMs are based on the official aosp source. Most ROMs that I've tried are as stable as stock. What are the advantages? Added features. You're probably better off of gaining extra features via a custom ROM with those features built in, than gaining them by adding Xposed modules to the stock ROM. If you need instructions on unlocking/flashing/rooting this device I have a detailed guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928
PS. As per the rules, please only bump a thread once every 24 hours, it had only been exactly 94 minutes in this case.

I'm confident in the nexus development I was just unsure if the pros out weighed the cons as things currently stand vs stock
I will have a look at that thread though, I mean it is a nexus so if a hardware fault rears it's ugly head i can always return to stock.
Does the nexus line have any kind of flash counter yet or is it still safe I heard qualcomm was putting something in place awhile back. Sorry got to catch back up on things

No, Nexus devices do not have any sort of flash counter. Though, during the first 1-2 months of the 6P release, rumor had it that the phone has a blowable QFuse, which would be irreversible if you unlock the bootloader.
However, later on the skepticism was wiped away, and it was clarified that nothing as such exists. Yes, the QFuse exists, but its completely unrelated.

No flash counters or anything like that on the Nexus, never has been and probably never will be. It is first and foremost a development device, it just happened to catch on in the mainstream too. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, we have a great community of people helping out in the guide thread.

Qfuse thats the one I remember reading about thankyou DJ
Heisenberg thankyou for your answer this is my first nexus device so any help is appreciated. I saw there was a couple of all in one tools in the dev forum, do you think these work well or better just to use sdk and manual commands? I ask because im all for shortcuts when they work ;P
So far though this phone has been awesome so be interesting to see what some of these roms are like I'll be using just nexus devices from now on thanks again guys.

My advice: don't use a toolkit. They can make things easier sometimes but easier isn't always a good thing. They've been known to cause issues, and there's really no substitute for ensuring things go right by doing it yourself. Plus, if you're going to be modifying your phone, you really need to have a good working knowledge of fastboot, especially on a Nexus. That's what will get you out of trouble if it arises.
If you're looking for a pretty stock-like experience but with some great features added I'd recommend trying out Pure Nexus, it's a rock solid ROM with useful extra features. I have links to all ROMs (and basically anything useful for this device) in my index:

Depends entirely on your choice. If you want to learn more about your device and how things work on it, you can perform things by yourself. Doing it manually also helps you keep a track of things that are going on, so if somehow your device is stuck, or not functioning as it should, you can always track back the source of the issue. And since you performed it yourself, you will know it better.
On the other side, toolkits have their own benefits. If you just want to perform procedures without much hassle and automate everything, you can go for them. All the toolkits here is the 6P section have proved useful to many users. You can try all of them, and see which one works better for you and your phone.
I for once have tried SKIPSOFT Android toolkit, offers a lot of functions. At the same time, there is Squabbi's Nexus 6P Toolkit, which has a more user-friendly interface, and much simpler to use.
Personally, I don't prefer toolkits, they could be buggy, at times. And have never suited my purpose.

That depends, is it just stored in a folder on your internal storage or is it stored as app data?

I believe its stored as app data because even with root explorer on the S6 I couldnt find it but if I looked at the app size in the S6 app manager it didnt show the music as part of the apps usage if that makes sense.
Ill try pull data and see if it works if it does ill be sure to post it as it could be a life saver for others who once they start flashing wont stop

Well it'd only be an issue right now due to the bootloader unlock process wiping your internal storage. It isn't necessary to do so when flashing ROMs so the data would remain intact through ROM flashes.

If I have developer options enabled on stock could i not adb pull all data?
If not ohwell just means my connection will get another day of thrashing lol
So dirty flashes are not a big issue on the nexus roms? or you mean backup data in twrp and restore after the rom flash?

Yes you should be able to use adb pull to grab the data. What I meant was that'd only be necessary if your entire internal storage is about to be wiped, like prior to unlocking the bootloader.
And no, definitely don't dirty flash when changing ROMs, and definitely don't restore the /data portion of a nandroid backup on a different ROM. Both will cause major issues. What I meant about that was sometimes some of the data (your playlist for example) is not stored as a part of the app, but is instead stored in the internal storage. Because the internal storage itself isn't wiped during a wipe preceding a ROM flash (a clean flash involves wiping system, data, cache, dalvik cache) the playlist would still be present on your storage after flashing the new ROM.
Anyway, the whole point was in response to your comment about it being useful to frequent flashers, when in reality it (adb backup) is only really ever needed once (before your storage is wiped during the bootloader unlock). Sorry if I'm not making sense, I don't feel like I am haha.

Nice
Unlocking bootloader.
Quick question regarding unlocking bootloader on 6p.
I understand that unlocking will trigger the software verification warning when starting the phone. If I return completely stock at a later date and re-lock the bootloader will the verification warning be disabled?
I'm not new to the rooting/flashing thing and have modified all of my previous Androids, but there are conflicting reports as to whether this is the case. A couple of videos on YouTube make it appear that the message is disabled after a return to stock.

Yes, the message will disappear if the bootloader is relocked. That's the only way to remove it. Not sure if you need it but I have a detailed unlock/root/flash guide for our device here:

I know this question has been asked, and have been searching around the forums, but everything I am seeing says the reason that there are no real custom roms for this device is because the Bootloader is locked.. In my developer options on my device I am given the choice to enable OEM Unlock. Will this allow me to bypass the issues others are having? My Goal is to eventually learn what needs to be done so I can create my own rom or take a stock debloated rom and customize it completely to an end result I am happy with including UI/apps etc..
Thanks,

Nope. We can still have custom roms but we're just stuck with the one kernel required for root.

Bootloader is still locked. As of right now there is no way to unlock it so there is no way to have a custom ROM.
If you look at the development thread, you can see the options. One is a mod of the OEM ROM (PD8 only), but the other two are ROMs - on bade on 935U (echoe) and the other is a cleaned up modified Stock ROM.
With the locked bootloader you can only flash signed by Samsung ROMs - so no ASOP, CMxx ROMs. But by taking a stock ROM or the exiting unbloated one (with permission if you want to post your ROM - which would be welcome) it is something you can do right now (after you are rooted of course).
We also don't have custom recoveries, but flashing and backing up with FlashFire works pretty good, so go for it !

I'm sure I know the answer to this, but can we fake signing? Also where would I need to go to research what needs to be done to remove the locked bootloader for my specific device? Maybe I can contribute something towards helping this get done. Are there any places people have shared their research?
Thanks guys for the awesome replies

People have been working on this since the device launched back in March. As far as I know, the files are cryptographically signed by Samsung, and the only way to bypass that is to find some kind of security exploit. As of yet, it hasn't been done. The leaked engineering kernel is basically the only known path at the moment to step outside of Samsung's locked down system.

Alright I will look into this then. I'm new to the android scene, but have experience with disassembly for applications, and reverse engineering for the older video game consoles. So why is there an option to oem unlock the phone if it doesn't really do that?

Thanks for that. I understand now.
We are rooted only because of the engineering bootloader. Stupid question time - with the problems with the kernel which are only partially fixed, ccouyld the kernel inself be modified or would it then be blocked by the bootloader.
There may custom kernels out there that would not work on a locked bootloader, but is the engineering kernel possibly open to modifications?

Of course we can get your started but see
But first you must answer us these question three.
Why do you want root?
Do you have a computer? (This is a must for root.)
Are you ready to be disappointed?

follow this (use odin to flash rooted kernel) ......you should search before posting things like this.....google is your friend bro.
GOOD LUCK - BTW use flash fire app in play store to make backups and flash roms
Okay okay.
A quick glance at T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion would have led you to the "How to root the S7 EDGE" thread.

Well while I was waiting I just rooted it. So what do you think that would be the next step towards installing a rom? To answer your survey questions  :
1- Because a phone without being rooted is like a bird without wins.

Well then.
Rooting the phone (as I'm sure you had already found out) was fairly easy.
BUT... since we do not have an unlocked bootloader then we cannot have any custom recovery. Which means we can only (for now) use adb and Fireflash to flash any custom firmwares. And while we're on the subject of that... there is only one custom rom. Well... technically there are two but only one for you since you updated to the latest firmware.
Echoe ROM which was updated (ummm...) September 9th (not including the Verizon version which might work but with no promises)
Tekxv2 which was updated back in July. Unfortunately, that is flashed by adb (computer required) and only supports G935TUVS3APD8 which is... pretty old.
Things that you may notice with root.
Battery life may be shorter.
Strange icons on your status bar.
Might start to have random reboots for absolutely no reason.
Can't use Samsung Pay and some other apps.
Phone might be laggy.
Phone might feel hot.
Some of those can be resolved by flashing the only custom rom that we have (Echoe ROM... which is a rather nice rom) but it's not "there" yet.
Or you can use the guide in my signature to resolve issues like the lag and the strange icons. Yet even after the "fix" you might still experience both again from time to time.
You might even have the IMS force close issue which I used to get about once a month. It would piss me off because no sooner that you click the button, it'll pop up again and you don't have time to do anything. You're pretty much forced to reflash stock, wipe, re-root, restore a latest backup... which can take hours and is rather inconvenient if it happens to you while you're at work like it always seemed to happen for me.
SO...
All in all... root is okay. It's better than nothing I suppose. But until we get more developer support for this phone then in my opinion it's kinda pointless in my opinion.
Too many drawbacks. I eventually unrooted two weeks ago and I love my phone now. I'm using the heck out of Samsung Pay especially since their promotions are pretty nice right now! Plus a few members are testing the Nouget update which probably won't be getting root at all since rooting requires an engineering kernel which we don't have and might not get. Or an unlocked bootloader which we've pretty much given up on.
A lot of members that are testing the Nouget beta firmware are extremely satisfied with it so if we can't root Nouget then having a rooted S7 will probably fade away as more people update to Android 7+. That's where I see this going anyway.

EDIT: Damn... I really don't like the visual style of Echoe... is that one the only one I can flash??

In all reality, I don't use my phone for the purposes that require my viewing of ads to begin with.
Sure when I was rooted I had adblocker. But honestly, I had completely forgotten all about that benefit of being rooted until now.
I suppose if you absolutely need to be rid of ads then by all means, retain root. However ads don't effect my daily use one bit.

I just flash the appropriate firmware that you had prior to rooting with ODIN.
Never had any issues. Which "guide" are you referring to?

bro now I'm friking out, I followed this guide and when I click in flash it says Fail. I followed it step by step, I don't don't what's going on and when I reset the phone it says custom and doesn't even load, so tmobil would know that I rooted it...
fff.... can you give me the link, guide, whatever you used to revert it?

You're probably trying to flash a firmware with a V3 bootloader over G935TTMB4APK1.
If you were seriously following that (outdated) guide step by step then you tried flashing TMB_G935TUVU3APG1.zip over a PK1 firmware. Yeah... that doesn't work.
Download the latest firmware from sammmobile.
https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G935T/
Try it again.
IF that doesn't work... try using Smart Switch.
I haven't done it before but I think it's the Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.

You have no idea the help you gave me. I went to sammobil before but since it said that the download speed was too slow, I didn't do it through that page. Now I did it and it's working fine thanks bro.
But when I start it, it says: custom in the log in, how can I totally put it original?

You should flash everything.
BL= Bootloader (which should be V4 since you updated to the latest firmware already. Anything less than V4 will fail.)
AP= Is for System, Cache, kernel, etc.
CP= Is for modems
CSC is for your HOME_CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 file.
Important! If you use the CSC_TMB_G935TTMB4APK1_CL9507190_QB11413830_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 (doesn't have the word "HOME" in the name) then it'll wipe your phone!
If your phone still says "CUSTOM" on it then make sure that reboot and check again. If it still says custom then make sure that you don't still have the engineering kernel. Re-flash the AP files again if so. It shouldn't though if it's 100% stock. Also note if you saw the unlocked padlock on the S7 Edge splash screen (before the bootanimation).
Good luck and happy New Year.

Can someone please make some ROMs for this device? Or can someone port from s7? We have custom recovery but we lack custom ROMs....
I second that.
Yes, please. I read somewhere here that elephone haven't released their sources, but since the Eragon developer managed it somehow I guess others ought to be able to rebase theirs on the relevant parts of his - ?
Anyway to help community of elephone 8 to create custom ROMs?

Eragon was just a very very slight mod of the original rom by elephone. in order to get a real custom ROM like Lineage OS, we need to compile it from sources and to do that we need elephone sorce code.
Another way is porting a custom rom from another phone with the same CPU (helio x25) and try to make it boot by editing some stuff, the problem is that its very dificult to do the trial error to get it booting because we don´t have access to the Recovery or to the fastboot directly ( The button vol+ doesn´t work on fastboot menu so you can´t enter recovery or unlock the bootloader....)
Maybe someone could try to port a ROM but honestly, with xposed you have all sorts of customization and to be honest the effort isn´t worth it for the phone as it is now. Maybe with Oreo update from Elephone we can have some good news like source code or a fix for the buttons in order to access recovery by pressing buttons with the phone OFF.
Fingers crossed
Thank you bihariel for making those points very clear to the club here.
Also just to share something personal. Six months ago, I sent a few emails to Elephone asking about the hardware key combination to access Recovery and requesting bootloader unlock. I've never got their response back. I think they deliberately disable the key combination. Therefore, personally, I don't have high hopes for an easy access to Recovery or even the source code for our phone in the near future.
Fortunately, we still can root it. Experienced users can optimise/customise the stock rom to their liking with no hassle. Some new users though would still love to have a custom rom just to easily flash on the phone, even if it's quite close to the stock rom. Perhaps, when we have an Oreo rom from Elephone (even without its source code), a slimmer/cleaner rooted version of the stock rom will still be nice for some of us.

Hi anox, I'm very interested to hear which mods you've done. I haven't bothered rooting this phone, only took off the two adups apks, but would certainly do so if there are some significant advantages to it. Much obliged if you'd share, thanks in advance!

Hi Plowmanx, I'm not really an experienced user here. I just need root for some apps and customization, nothing much. In fact, it's just the way I'd use any android phone. They might not be useful for you at all.
Anyway, my list goes like this.
root apps: adaway, flashfire, lmt launcher, mixplorer, quick reboot
magisk modules: busybox, audio mod lib, viper4android
xposed modules: gravitybox, xuimod
I removed most apps that came with the stock rom.
I might have also modified some system files like build.prop here and there.
Hello everyone, sorry if I'm off topic. But I'm just wondering. What's the way to be right now? Eragon or Stock? I'm experiencing some lags with the stock rom on many apps.
(Facebook is nearly unusable and videos at 240p)
I have no idea on how to root a device btw, and one last thing, is it worth it removing fota package since elephone is not giving us an Oreo update?
Stock rom minus adups here. I only use FB on the phone via Ecosia browser and it seems to have no problems. FB app has always been a dreadful battery hog. What other apps lag?

I use Puffin browser for years but seems to be laggy at the s8 Scrolling is not smooth at all.
When I have Facebook, Messenger, Instagram Running in Background honestly most of the apps I try to run are slow and show some lag (even YouTube)
Forgot to mention that I use Malware Bytes and Nova Launcher which may slow down the device but it's a way of living for me. Both are MUST. ?

that is exactly the reason I do not bother porting, no hardware key recovery access just makes the whole porting process extremely tedious.
For those of you that cant root the elephone s8 using the sp-tools because of not knowing what to do to the elephone s8,
1. Simply install the windows drivers, which you have to follow some specific instructions on allowing windows to install unsafe drivers, all in the above site, visit...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-p9000/how-to/how-to-guideline-install-mtk-drivers-t3344042
2. Extract sp-tools and the root file etc. and make a note of where you extract them...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-s8/how-to/tutorial-elephone-s8-root-tutorial-t3688171
3. Follow the instructions on setting up sp-tools and then click the download button in sp-tools, then turn your phone completely off, and then plug in your phone to the usb cable that should be connected to the same pc, while holding the VOL + button. Sp- tools should begin to flash the root file to the phone by itself. Once done, turn the phone on.
4. Download and install magisk from https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/topjoh...5-6-4-release/ on the phone and run the app.
You should have root access after that.
For those that flashed twrp and cant seem to access it when powering on the elephone s8 from the off state, there is an app called CWM, there are others, but I use this, download and install the app, and when you open it, it should ask you options such as reboot into recovery mode, reboot into download mode, etc. , I just choose reboot into recovery mode and the phone restarts and takes me directly into twrp. The CWM app makes it easy to enter which mode you want without holding any volume and power keys, etc.
Wondering.... anyone know if any of the Elephones that came out AFTER the S8 can reboot to recovery via buttons?

I don't think so.
I know for a fact that U Pro cannot.
Looks like that's how Elephone makes phones these days.
Stupid question ... What would happen if you tried to flash an Elephone s9 rom? I'm kind of expecting bricking but thought maybe ...

That sucks and is soooooo stupid... Actually a deal breaker for me to buy another Elephone.
Greetings to the following maintainers of current, or upcoming, Pie roms.
In no particular order...
@PixelBoot, @voidz777, @minidude2012, @calebcabob, @semdoc, @ggpew2, @AndyYan, and last, but certainly not least @razorloves
First, I applaud you all for the work you do in maintaining these roms and keeping the Nexus 6P relevant and thank you. I've been flashing roms since KK and y'all keep Android fun!
Now for my humble request.... As it seems most, if not all, Pie roms are trending away from FDE to FBE recovery, I am unable to use them with FBE apparently as I am with Total Wireless (in the SE United States) and it's "TRACFONE.VZWENTP" APN never survives the formatting of data or installing the FBE twrp recovery. To compound the issue, the roms also are missing the APN "+" sign to add an APN & the "EDIT APN" field is grayed out, not allowing me to manually install nor edit to get the correct APN.
Is it possible to begin baking in either the APN itself (I'm happy to provide the info if necessary) or at least the ability to add & edit please? I appreciate your consideration.
Either way, again, thank you for your efforts!
Best regards,
NatesLaw
"Most if not all pie ROMs are going to fbe"? This is a bit of stretch. There's 4 fde based pie ROMs, and six fbe, with three of those fbe ROMs put out by the same person.
If it was more of a wide spread issue I'd see it making sense to look but you look to be a very small minority, that's just my two cents though.
I'd honestly just stick to fde like I do, there's no reason to need access to and flash 30 different roms lol. We have aicp, aosip, ressurection remix, and a stock rom.

As I said, it's merely a humble request. This is a forum, so I'm just using the opportunity to ask. If they aren't interested, then that's fine. No hard feelings either way, but I don't think it hurts to ask. I hope you have a great day.
@Lawlrus
Good day. Not sure of your expertise level but since you're the only one to respond perhaps you can answer a question please.
Once I flash a rom (btw, even ACIP Pie doesn't have my APN or way to add it) do you think that's it's possible, after flashing a rom, that perhaps then flashing my stock EFS backup might add the correct APN?
If you, or nobody, knows that fine.... Just thought I'd ask, in case, so I'm not wasting effort should the answer be "negative ".
TIA
Regards.

I *think* I already asked in another thread where you posted about your issues about adding the APN manually, and it was stated that the option is greyed out. If that was the case I wouldn't know what the reason would be other than the service you have.
As far as flashing the efs, I have done it before, and I've seen other people do it. But when it comes to your efs, its something you definitely do not want to play with if you're not ready or able to deal with it if it goes poorly. Your efs contains your iemi number (this is the reason why everyone should back up their efs regardless but 90% don't) if playing around flashing your efs backup, then a ROM, flashing the backup etc etc, and something goes wrong, it can be very wrong. Without your iemi your phone is nothing more than a tablet at that point. If you lose it, or if you're messing around flashing and the backup gets corrupted, then you're Sol. There is no way to get it back without a working backup, aside from using illiegal programs that phone thieves use that i'm not going to get into.
Before trying to reflash the efs backup you have, I'd completely start from scratch. If there's no way to add your apn manually, reflash the DEC factory image, and the radio, reroot/recovery/all that bull**** and see what happens. If you still have the issue, try messing with your efs backup.
I'm an old user, I've been flashing phones since android 2.x so I'm not nearly as picky as most people, flashing a new ROM every couple days isn't as exciting as it used to be for me, I spent years flashing multiple ROMs weekly, sometimes daily. But now I just stick on winexusers stock ROM 98% of the time because it works, and I don't need 900 flashy features that end up ****ting up the experience for me if features go wrong. What this means, is consider sticking with what works. If only 2 9.0 ROMs work with your service, who gives a ****? Enjoy 9.0. If you're stuck using 8.1 then what's it matter? 9.0 battery is much worse than 8.1 and aside from security updates, 9.0 is 8.1 but flaky as fk because we don't get official 9.0. As far as security updates, when is the last time you saw a vulnerability that only a kernel update fixed, that wasn't caused by people installing the vulnerability, or being stupid themselves?

That's weird man, I've never had an issue not being able to edit my APN on any ROM, including Pie ones.. If its bcuz of your carrier, what happens when you remove your SIM card and set it up without it, then see if your APNs editable then?
Have you tried any of the apps in the PlayStore? I know there's quite a few in there, that try to enable the edits in different ways. Saw one that listed a ton of carriers and you can just select yours.
Good luck

Hello & good evening.
Yes, it's probably because we're on Total Wireless, which uses Verizon's system but has it's own APN.
I may try the Sim card trick, thanks. Lately I've just been using stock (rooted) so the performance is fine. I just used to enjoy trying new roms back with my old LG G3. It was SO easy to root and flash back then.
God bless!!
