Hi there
I used to be able to get fast charging when connecting my S6 to my MacBook via USB.
Now I connected my new S8 to my MacBook Pro via USB cable (+ USB-C adapter) and it's charging painfully slow.
Is the S8 no longer able to get fast charging when connected to the laptop?
Is there any other issue like maybe the USB-C adapter/ converter? I tried both the Samsung USB-C adapter and Apple's with the Samsung charging cable but no fast charging. Would I need to get a real USB-C cable (both ends)? Or is it just not possible anymore at all connected to a laptop?
Thanks

Ok i'll try that. Just really strange that Samsung couldn't do a real C to C charging cable on their power adapter, why would the new still be regular USB on the charging power adapter itself.

Because most people use the USB cables for data transfer as well, and most computers contain a USB A legacy port and no USB C.

Pixel and MacBooks with Type-C charging use the Power Delivery standard from the USB standard. Samsung uses Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 on the 7 and 8, so you need a supply with the orange or green connectors.

"orange or green connectors" ?
What exactly is that and any specific brand?

They are Quick Charge ports, using Qualcomm technology. Anker, Aukey, even some laptops and PCs have them. Search for Quick Charge.

I thought you meant some cable/ connector. My MacBook Pro only has USB-C.
I'd like to find a USB-C cable that would allow fast charging for the S8.

Well they're not compatible standards. Apple and Google went with the USB standards set in Power Delivery. Qualcomm are using their own proprietary system, which so happens Samsung brought to the S8.

So that means definitely no fast charging via laptop for me then
Ok thanks anyway.

I've noticed when I have my tablet plugged into my computer via USB it doesn't appear to be charging. The battery icon is showing a red lightning bolt. This is different than when I have my tab plugged into a wall socket.
Working as intended or..?
Your PC USB port can't supply enough juice (500ma max) compare to your wall socket (>2000ma) to charge while power the tab. Turn the tab off and your will get some charge off the USB port.

It's been charging my tab for about a month now with no problems at all, but I'm not here to argue, if you feel that you know more than I do. I've charged the tablet using that adapter from my laptop, PC, and Energizer XP4001 Power Pack.
You might also search the forums, as I'm not the only one to recommend and use this item.

Ahh thanks! Was wondering why it wouldn't charge via my USB port.
(In fact using my Samsung Focus USB adapter for the outlet doesn't seem to work either... I need to use only the Samsung Tab USB adapter)

The focus charger is rated only about 700ma (same exact one as Captivate/SGS), marginablly better than PC USB. GT 10.1 has a rather large battery and hence it requires much larger charge current. You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?

Is that through the orginal AC adapter or through PC USB?
Turning off the tablet and charging it via USB works, but it takes forever!

And you are not the only one who is waiting twice as long before his tab is fully charged. Then we can open a topic "Why does it take so long before my tab is charged?" As foxbat stated: You don't see any laptop get charged via USB, do you?
So if I say your adapter doesn't work its just as accurate as your answer it does work.

Hey, I'm not here to argue with you. I'm just an idiot.
Go about your business, and don't listen. I'm ok with that.
First of all, not all USB ports are equal.
On many modern PCs, the USB ports can deliver more than 500mA over USB if required. This is definitely true for pretty much all Macs since 2007, and quite a few mainboards from other manufacturers (see this article for some background).
Secondly, I've had one of these adaptors for quite a while now, and have used it regularly to charge my Galaxy Tab 7" which uses exactly the same power supply and cables as the GT 10.1. I can categorically state that when using this adaptor, it the GT7 does charge from a Macbook Air and a 5000mAh external battery that has a 1A output USB port labelled for an iPad.
Whilst it might not be as quick as the wall charger, it is definitely much faster than attempting to charge the GT7 from the same devices without the adaptor, even if the device is in use.
I've not formally tried to charge my GT10.1 with it yet, but I did check to see if the "not-charging" indicator went away (which it did), so I rather presume it will work much like the GT7.
Regards,
Dave

You don't need to embarrass yourself by saying you're an idiot, It's very childish and the second time you mention I'm supposed to be smarter then you. I'm sorry you take this so personally.
i just use the supplied cable and it charges via usb on my computer. it shows not charging, but it basically trickle charges when the tab is both on and off
So I just bought the Note 3 yesterday, nice beast.
I briefly talked about the new micro-USB cable with the seller, who explained that it was completely compatible with regular micro-USB cables (I was starting to be disappointed : just when everyone was adopting standard micro-USB, they had to change that !).
But, he added it was nevertheless recommended to use the new charger cable. We both wondered why exactly, what could happen if using only an old regular micro-USB cable. Time to achieve charging is different? Can it damage the battery or reduce its life ? Or is it just to get USB 3 high-speed transfer capability?
As I now have (after having Galaxy 1, 2, and 3) many micro-usb cable everywhere (office, car), I'd like to be able to safely use them.
Thanks for your answers/leads.

Your original micro USB cables are perfectly OK to use. If using an mains AC charger, your phone will charge at whatever rate that charger charges at (500ma, 1a, 2a etc) irrelevant of whether you use a micro USB cable or micro USB 3 cable.
The only diffrerence really, is when charging from your computers USB ports. With the micro USB 3 cable, your phone will charge at a faster rate.
I havent even used my micro USB 3 charger that came with my phone yet, ive just been using my old chargers.
Nothing adverse happens, just use em like you would in your previous phones.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk 4
It won't hurt anything...
Your phone will charge slower and you data transfers will be slower. That is all.
Hello,
I've tried to find a clear, straight answer online and while I have found info regarding the USB-C standard, I can't find an answer to my question.
I use a mirco usb plug to charge both my current mobile phone and my android tablet.
Does the smaller port in the OnePlus Two use the same sized micro-usb port for charging? I understand that the USB-C port is the larger port on the other end of the cable. Maybe I am wrong about that.
Right now I have several micro usb chargers that I use to charge my phone and my tablet, and I'd like to know if they will be able to charge a OnePlus Two. I don't mind if the charging is slower, but I'd just like to know if it will fit and charge.
Thanks!
No in my sense,as far as my knowlege goes, USB-Type C is altogether a different technology,so you will need a special adapter for OTG too..

No.....a big No....the port they are using is nothing more than a new plug on the phone side of the cord. The other end of the cable will plug into all your old USB ports. So you will need to use the OP2 cable but the end that does not plug into the phone will plug into any current USB port.
They did not include any of the good things that come with USB C, they just put the USB C plug in the phone and on one end of the cable.

Thanks, friend. That's clear. This is a drag. Right now I have several charging cables that power all my stuff. Now if I get the OP2, I'll need two cables for home and two for the office. That's a negative in my book

Based on the release video they said an adapter would be available older USB cables so that might be an option for you.
Good to know. If the adapter is small and inexpensive, that would help a lot! Thanks!

Quick question for you.
I've just ordered a Nexus 6P and will have to change all my chargers at home and at the office.
Of course I'll only use cables purchased at the Google Store or cabler reviewed by Benson Leung.
What about wall chargers? Can I use 3A USB Type A chargers or should I upgrade those as well?
Thanks and sorry for re-posting. I just haven't found antyhing about the bricks. Only the cables.

A charger with a Type-A socket paired with a spec-compliant Type-A to Type-C cable will be able to provide a max of 2.4A of power. The only way to get more than 2.4A out of a Type-A charger will be to use a non-compliant Type-A to Type-C cable. In reality though, few chargers out there will actually give you 2.4A.
A charger with a Type-C socket and a Type-C to Type-C cable can do the full 3A while following specs.
Ok, but will the use of a compliant (Google) A to C cable and an old 1A-2.4A charger damage either my phone, the carger or the cable?

No, it won't. Googles cable is safe to use.
Googles A to C cable is properly designed. If you use a complaint cable (correct 56k ohm resistor) your phone will see it as a legacy charger and pull what the power brick allows it to pull.
Whereas, a non compliant cable (non 56k ohm resistor) will read as a USB 3.1 type C to type C cable to the phone; so it may (will if it's low on power) try and pull 3A out of a cable and power brick that don't support 3 amps.

Thanks. That answers my questions.
How does USB cable influences charge of speed? Why DASH speed charging works with the red USB cable provided by manufacturer, but not my other USB3 cables?
Does the cable have to be some some special kind, i.e. sort of certification or whatever? I would really like to use longer (i.e. 1.5 - 2 metres) cable from my charger, but all the cables I have and tried, plugged into official charger, does not support fast charge.
Thanks for answers!

That is mostly cause of a resistance between the wires which voltage drop indicates its a cable that meets the requirements. That is the common practice for such proprietary accessories.
Maybe someone has time to measure this and/or cut his original cable and find the resistor, I need mine
I'm sure it's that method.

You can buy a third party one cheaply from ali express. They work like the proprietary ones and there's also a 1.5m option. I personally haven't found any drops in charging speed at all.
Look in the USB-A side of the cable, there is an extra pin above the 4 normal USB pins which signals dash charging.
