Rooting Nougat 7.0 XT1625 Athene - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

I have the retail XT1625 running Nougat and I cannot for the life of me manage to root it. ElementalX is installed just fine, but installing Magisk and SuperSU (a) kills my wifi and cellular connections and (b) Magisk didn't even root it. Installing superuser.zip and phh's superuser didn't work either. My phone remains unrooted and I have tried probably every combination of using these three as well as installing them singularly and my phone will either be rooted with no connection abilities or not rooted. In Magisk's case, I remained unrooted and it killed my connections anyway. I had to erase my data to get my cellular connection back.
Anyway, a little help would be greatly appreciated. I am running TWRP and have an unlocked bootloader, as well as a flashable Nougat ROM. I just can't seem to root this thing while retaining my connection abilities.

That's super weird, are you installing the correct EX kernel? Make sure to flash the stock kernel (1.04).
And if that still doesn't work, I recommend trying to find the correct N radio (62R I think?) and flashing that. Personally, my XT1625 has had no issues.

Yep, definitely the right one - whenever I tried to flash the other ones it didn't work. Only 1.04 would even bring up the ElementalX installer thing.
And.... the txt file for my ROM is saying 60R, not 62R..... so is my NON-HLOS.bin file.
i'll test out this next ROM as soon as it finishes downloading.

1) Sounds like a corrupted download on the part of the kernels if the aroma installer didn't pop up.
2) Did you make sure to wipe ARTcache/cache/data/system?
3) My radio is M8952_70030.25.03.62R ATHENE_RETUSA_CUST, maybe try to find that specific radio flashable?
4) Just to double check... you flashed the ROM first (make sure the download isn't corrupted!), then the kernel, then the root zip?

1 - probably
2 - imma try again and see what happens
3 - i downloaded a thing and let's see if this one works. It's a twrp backup, so i'm not really sure if it will but I may as well try.
4 - yes

Okay, so I tried again. This time I flashed Magisk 12.0 downloaded from the Magisk Manager app, then ElementalX, then Magisk again, and it worked.
. . .
not sure what happened but the problem appears to have fixed itself.

Marshmallow and root

Hey. I had rooted 5.1.1 Moto X Style and did a return to stock 5.1.1. eu version (relocked bootloader). After booted up, I received update to Marshmallow, I installed it. It worked. Later I wanted to root it, so I unlocked bootloader again and also did flash custom recovery - TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.1-clark). Later I restarted device and its was stuck on logo of Motorola. Nothing boots up.
Cant find solution for this. Thanks.
UPDATE:
Solved my issue here.
UPDATE2:
If there is problems upgrading your device to Marshmallow, I would suggest install custom ROM TruPureXMM with custom KERNEL Frankenclark. I am using this combo for long period of time and now I can suggest to others too!
Mine is having a similar issue. Mine took forever to boot at your stage because it formatted itself. Once I flashed SuperSU is where mine refused to boot. I have no idea what's going on either.
I am having the exact same issue. I updated to Marshmallow, installed TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.1-clark), flashed SuperSU and the phone hung on the Motorolla Logo at boot. I was still able to access the boot loader (holidng down the volume and the power button) and attempted to restore using http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...ndows-tool-moto-x-style-pure-edition-t3199905. I was able to restore however now my wifi does not work and therefore I cannot update to Marshmallow OTA.

You need to reflash the LP radio from the restore all file ( NON-HLOS.bin ). That should do it.
I'm having the exact same issue. I'm so glad you posted. I gave up and used the restore-to-stock tool as well, but my Wi-Fi isn't working either. What is LP radio and how do I flash it? Now that I've restored to stock, I no longer have TWRP, and because I don't have WiFi, I can't update to Marshmallow.

If you want WIFI on stock 5.1.1 you need to flash right modem for you.
You should download .zip file that contains all stock files, unzip it, and find "NON-HLOS.bin", thats modem file that you need.
Now boot into fastboot mode (power+volume down), and from PC use "fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin"
Restart device, you should be okey now.
For XT1572 "STYLE" EU you can download this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3gPYUZ4nRLwTUU4cUVmcUtBTEU/view;
But for XT1575 "PURE" US use this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3gPYUZ4nRLwTl9Wd1JQX0hFejg/view.
If you are using other device, use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/firmware-moto-x-style-pure-stock-t3272486 to find your device, but this threads links are very slow.

Terrific! It actually worked! Thank you.
Did you find a solution for it being stuck at Motorola logo? I was also stuck on that after installing TWRP.

Nop, could find solution, so I did full wipe, and restored my backup file with 5.1.1. Also flashed stock logo, boot and modem, so it can boot my old 5.1.1. Moto.
Will wait for some kind of european ROM with Marshmallow, or TWRP update. Maybe later will try again to go fully stock and upgrade to Marshmallow, maybe will find something that will work, right now I just need my "phone" back so I can use it as daily driver.
I just finished flashing TruPureXMM. I'm in the middle of restoring all my apps, and I still need to re-fix the WiFi, but otherwise my experience is working well. You might want to check that out.

For wifi you should flash modem from his thread: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24269982087017262
Its Pure modem with band 12 fix.
I was using his Rom for some hours and didnt like it, my personal opinion:
Good: easy to install; twrp, supersu, xposed is working.
Bad: modified kernel (had more problems with it, it was draining battery so fast - 4 little cores was always online for ~900-1440MHz, and 1 big core always online for same frequancy as little cores, only one big core was going idle), so I didnt like all this modifications to stock kernel, also I didnt like that mine EU version now is listed as US version XT1575, and last that I noticed after some hours of usage is that on secret menu, mine 3G network was listed as WCDMA, but on EU of mine Style same 3G is using GSM auto method. I suppose that there can be some difficulties in EU countries - after changing settings to 4G, I loosed signal, and only after restart I got it back.
Thats the main reasons why I want european rom, or to modifie stock eu MM with xposed.

I think in that case I did flash SuperSU the old way for Stock Moto Marshmallow. I then did a TWRP backup to go back to full stock and tried rooting using systemless, but something isn't right. It's showing up, apps are asking for permission, but its acting odd. The apps can't get permission and Viper for example just crashes and other apps just keep saying something is wrong. My TWRP is messed up to. It was pushed correctly, but it seems very unstable. I can't flash any ROMs and if I plug it into my computer to send a file, when I reboot it no longer shows it in my directory to install. Sometimes if I hit reboot device, it only reboots recovery or just ignores the command entirely. I think I will revert it back to moto standard and try again, but this has been a little weird.

fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
Where and how do I type this? I have everything else done.
Hi,
I followed this instructions and I have two problems:
It only boots using flashboot boot boot.img (in fact I can't do the fastboot reboot-bootloader command because the previous command just boots the phone)
There's no wifi, I tried flashing the modem linked before but I think that's for 5.1.1 so it didn't work

For this you need adb files on your PC.
You should read this thread, for how to get this files on your PC.
Then:
Basically, open terminal within adb driver folder, connect phone via USB to PC with USB Debugging ON, and you are ready to go - boot your phone into fastboot mode (shut down phone first, and then power+volume down) and now your are ready to use this command: fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin, but remember to put this "NON-HLOS.bin" file into folder where you opened terminal from.
But if you experience problems, I suggest just install TruPureXMM ROM. It whould be much easier!
Good luck!

Hello!
Have you read my other thread?
I have explained all my steps there, my device is Moto X Style (XT1572).
But I can suggest also use TruPureXMM ROM. Right now I am using this rom for about month, you could try it!
Good luck!
No luck with reflashing NON-HLOS.bin
I tried systemless root on my moto x pure marshamallow. Now the wifi is not working at all. I tried reflashing the NON-HLOS.bin but no luck there. Is there any way to solve this issue? Or should i revert back to lollipop seems like it is working just fine for others on lollipop.

Lets start from beginning.
What is your device codename (region)?

moto x pure 6.0 mm ( root )

Tried everything flashing every supersu via twrp and just gets stuck at the moto logo. Tried systemless root and did the same thing. So thinking it was my kernel and flashed elementalx moto kernel ( frankenclark ) then tried to flash supersu once again with the same fail and noticed with that kernel I lost my wifi connection but ran it anyways but failed. After much forum browsing and that supersu just isn't for the MXPE I even went as far as kingroot to achieve root then slap supersu to keep root like I did with my kindle fire. I'm pretty lost for words here. I'm previously running resurection remix and works flawless but I do really like the original setup. Ps tried the stock rooted roms and they was a lil off and kept trying to ota update but failed because my bootloader is unlocked so I had to uninstall it. Just looking to root the original rom so I can keep all the moto apps. Looking forward to hearing the ideas. Thanks in advance.
Wow... So I assume you flashed back to pure stock?
Rooting is not difficult, there is only 2 ways to do it, either flash SuperSU 2.62-3 beta or the latest stable version with the "echo" command for systemless installations. Look at this thread (note the pictures in the OP are of my XT1575, I fudged a little) but the method is identical. If it doesn't work, no offense, but your not doing something right.
I have both pure stock in a restore and resurection remix in a restore which is pretty much my daily because the active display drives me nuts. And supersu 2.6.2 I haven't tried yet but the SR supersu I've flashed via twrp with the stock kernel and ( frankenclark ) kernel and it responded the same stuck at moto. I've flashed it via windroid toolkit also it shows it's installing without any failure but on boot up she says no way. And I've updated the toolkit to it's newest version and still ends up stuck at moto. I'm sure I'll figure it out and get it. And no offense on doing something wrong it's been known to happen. Some lg double tap to wake the screen would be nice over the active display.

It sounds like the install script for SuperSU is not doing a systemless install...
So you are flashing stock, booting at least once (this is required), the open TWRP and allow changes to system (In mounts make sure Mount System Read-Only is NOT checked), go to Advanced - Terminal and enter "echo SYSTEMLESS=true>>/data/.supersu" and press enter, then go to Install and select the SuperSU zip file and install it. It should clearly say it is doing a system-less install, patching boot image, etc. as shown in the first post of the link I shared a couple posts previous.
OK I tried this info word for word and tried multiple times and its still gets stuck on the moto logo, I don't get it.
I don't know... it's a puzzler.
2.62-3 and stop using toolkits.

Well that worked perfectly the first try I used those terminal commands with that version SuperSU it rooted and booted right up like normal and started asking the SuperSU adb shell permission banners. RS988 21d OTA in the wild

The RS988 finally has a new OS update with Google patch level Dec 1st, and that means that we are finally good against blueborne and krack!
Sent from my RS988 using Tapatalk
I just installed it. It's about time. I was beginning to wonder if they had stopped support on the RS988. I hear the LG G5 is supposed to get Oreo, but I have a feeling that the RS988 will get left out based on how the updates have gone so far.
Hi! Has the modem changed?
I rooted my device with SuperSU and TRWP, is it advisable install this update? Won't it remove or disable the root access?

From what I know, in order to get the ota your bootloader needs to be the stock one, but I could not find it outside of full kdz packages.
I have not rooted yet waiting for this specific update (given the security fixes).
I would suggest you to backup all of your apps and settings with an app like Titanium Backup, flash stock, install the ota, reinstall TWRP, root and magisk and then restore apps and settings from the backup

the best source of full stock roms as well as info on the phone I could find so far is https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g5/how-to/info-autos-g5-thread-t3350648
The way I had to update was to flash 21a and then take OTA's up to 21d because when I flashed 21c back to stock using TWRP and tried to update it gave me an error and then rebooted and said I can't update because I had rooted the device.

Here's the baseband version with RS98821c: MPSS.TH.2.0.c1.4-00047-M8996FAAAANAZM-1.88674.1.101802.1
The numbers are slightly different at the end compared to RS98821d , but I'm not sure what if anything might have changed.
maybe, for getting OTA should we just get unroot? How to do it properly?
If recovery is not the stock one, it will not be possible to install the OTA.
Alternatively you might need to wait for someone to make a flashable zip you could flash with TWRP, but given the fact development on this phone is not too active you might need to wait for a while before is available

I was also planning on flashing the complete 21c zip so that I could take the 21d OTA. Glad to know that might not work.
Anyone know if it would be possible to install just the stock 21c recovery image? It's my understanding that having a custom recovery installed is what makes the OTA installation fail. If TWRP is what's getting in the way of installing the OTA, wouldn't replacing TWRP with stock recovery solve the problem without touching the system? If anyone who knows more about this stuff than me could chime in, I'd appreciate it.

First I flashed the magisk uninstaller and rebooted back to recovery. Then I flashed the 21c COMPLETE ZIP and didn't flash magisk so it would replace TWRP with the stock recovery on reboot. Then I rebooted and when I tried to update it went to the stock and threw up an error then rebooted. Upon reboot it displayed a message saying that I couldn't update because my device had been rooted. So I rebooted back in to bootloader and flashed TWRP again. Then I flashed 21a COMPLETE ZIP and no magisk so that the stock recovery would replace TWRP. I rebooted and went through setup and took OTA updates until I was on 21d. Then rebooted back into bootloader and flashed TWRP. Then rooted and we've through setup. I tried every other way but this was the only way that worked for me. I hope it helps!
should be an easier way. Did u see some changes to the radio?
Some of you may remember that last year I had the misfortune of installing the Brightpoint ROM on my Unlocked G5, which completely messed the phone up by not allowing it to connect to AT&T's LTE. It was a process to re-flash the older ROMs/Bootloader and then rebuild it to a stable 21c. I had used it for a while like that, and the only problem I had was that when ending a voice call (HSPA) it would take a while to change back to LTE.
I ended up going with the S8 over the summer (Samsung discount + Note 2 trade in) which got it for $18/month. I've been using it ever since and the LTE to HSPA Voice to LTE change-off on the S8 is done within a second, unlike the G5.
My mom had been using an unlocked Samsung S5 for almost a year now, and it's constantly dropping calls, and this past week it froze on her and required a battery pull, so was thinking of having her try out my (unused) G5 to see if she liked it more. When I turned the G5 on today, I updated all the apps, and then installed the 21d OTA update. The hand-off from voice to LTE still is not as fast as my S8, but seems to be improved from the 21c firmware.

I'm not having any reboot issues when playing music.

Is it safe to flash a OTA a couple versions above yours?

Got a quick question. I'm on OOS 9.0.11 currently with bootloader unlocked, TWRP installed, and rooted with Magisk. I know how to flash correctly and keep root and recovery after. Is it safe for me to install the 9.0.17 OTA without flashing 12-16? Any issues that could arise from me not flashing the other OTAs first?
I jumped several versions without issue. As long as you are using the complete file (the ~1.8 GB) file you should be fine. You'll have issues if you use the incremental file (obviously).

Thanks. And just to be sure I flash the update, then the TWRP installer, reboot to recovery, and then flash Magisk correct? After that I'm good to go?

That is correct. There is a new feature in TWRP that is supposed to eliminate the reflash, but I haven't tried that yet, I've just been flashing the installer, and rebooting to recovery, then flashing the rest.

I appreciate your help. I've been doing this stuff since the HTC Dream but with the way Android and smartphones in general change they're always more to learn

How to install Root and TWRP (Unofficial) in Android 10 for the OnePlus 6T

I've been stressing all day to fix my 6T. I wiped my phone countless of times and every time I flash TWRP and magisk after, I lose WIFI. I don't know how to fix this, it never happened before. I tried resetting it in settings, nothing happened. I really need WIFI as my data is literally finished. This was after I clean installed 10.3.0. I literally have nothing in my phone and my data is backed up thankfully.
I have found a fix for this. If you have updated to 10.3.0 or new update or going to. Install it via download or local upgrade. and follow this method. Once I followed this method, my WIFI was fixed.

2. In Magisk Manager, flash latest TWRP installer zip (the one called unofficial installer) from mauronofrio [DON'T REBOOT]
3. Still in Magisk Manager, Install (next to "Magisk is up to date") > Install > Install to inactive slot
4. Reboot
As an update: This method worked when I updated from 10.3.0 to 10.3.1. Everything was working fine.
There is an issue I have found. This method will make your system to boot into slot b, it still works as normal.
But if it bothers you that its slot b and not a, just redo the method again. It worked for me
Hey, thanks for crediting my post. I didn't know this would help with anyone's WiFi issue but I'm glad it did.

Yeah, I literally been trying for hours to find a solution online to no provail. Luckily I found your post and I used it as a last resort. I was about to give up at that point. Your method is quite good actually, I can install a new android 10 update, TWRP and magisk at the same time. and reboot with everything there. No more repeated reboots for TWRP and magisk
Same problem
Could not turn my wifi on, couldnt place calls, snap pictures, set alarm. Im so glad i found this post, because it did help me and I didnt lose any data. I was already rooted.

Yeah, I honestly haven't found any posts about this. I just used the method as a last resort, I was honestly planning to give up and move to IOS ?.
Installing the 10.3.0 again via local upgrade will just remove TWRP and magisk, but if you follow the method you'll get TWRP and Magisk installed with WIFI working . I thought that using the old method from Nougat, Oreo to Pie would work with Q/10. Nope, now we have found a way to have root with verything working

Ok, I didn't know that. But I don't use custom kernels tbh, I like to keep my device close to stock. I just have root, magisk modules, swift black stuff, TWRP, rooted apps which just improve the device and that's fine for me. I'm glad that it worked for you

You can flash TWRP zip in modules. You press on modules, click on the plus button, find your TWRP zip file and press it. Then magisk will flash the zip, but don't reboot

Hello everyone. I'm back. I'm gonna install 10.3.1 on my 6T. I'll try the method and let you guys know
@Extreme_Ninja2099 - How did you get on?
Cam we go straight from a rooted 9.0.17 to rooted 10.3.1 using the above mentioned method?

Its at the start of the thread. The method worked from 10.3.0 to 10.3.1. But my slot changed to B. I changed it back to A by re-doing the method again. Everything is fine with 10.3.1.
