I have researched this heavily.. Can anyone give me some clear cut answers and directions for how to Unlock the bootloader, + TWRP + Root this device? I'm on A2017U 7.1.1 B25. Every thread I have read had information and it was just EVERYWHERE and all over the place.
I REALLY wish that XDA would allow subfolders such as when you click ZTE Axon 7, subfolders would appear for each model, a thread specifically for A2017U users only, A2017 users only, A2017G users only, and from there post everything related to that model in those folders (How to root, roms, questions, real life review, etc). It would make for a Hell of a lot less confusion. Devs might have to have 2 or 3 of the same topics for different threads but everything would be unified. No more hey does this work with this or with that model, kernel, etc. That crap is confusing and probably why bricks are more apparent. They need to do that with EVERY phone type so instructions won't be confusing. It will be model specific which will reduce confusion and everything would be streamlined.

I'm in the same predicament as you. I'm trying to root B25, but I can find an exact way to go about it since fastboot is disabled on this firmware version.

I was in the same situation yesterday, and it was pretty hard to figure it out... there doesn't seem to be much information about this.
Before you start, enable developer settings on your phone and toggle the USB Debugging option and the OEM unlocking option. Otherwise, nothing else will work.
First, download these two files:
- B19 EDL image: https://build.nethunter.com/misc/axon7/A2017U_B19-NOUGAT_FULL_EDL.zip
- MiFlash: http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=attachment&aid=NzYzMjQzfGFlZDEyMDMzfDE0NzI1NDg5MDJ8ODE5MTF8MzM2MTg0
You'll have to enter EDL mode. Do this by pressing the volume up, volume down, and power buttons at the same time until the LED flashes and the screen turns totally black. After this, open MiFlash and click "Refresh". Your device should show up as a COM device (COM4, COM5, COM20...). If it does, then you're off to a good start. If not, you'll have to update the drivers on your PC's Device Manager manually.
After your device has been recognized by MiFlash, extract the EDL zip and, in MiFlash, navigate to the folder called A2017U_B19-NOUGAT etc. It's a folder that has the same name as the parent folder (kinda confusing, I know). Once you've selected that folder, click "Flash." Hopefully you won't run into any errors. If you get an error, try resetting the EDL mode (hold vol up, vol down, and power until the LED flashes once again, then wait 5-10 seconds and click "Refresh" on MiFlash). After it's done flashing, you can reboot your phone by pressing the power button until it goes out of EDL mode. Remember to press the volume up button so that you'll boot into fastboot.
Once you've done that, you'll have to install TWRP for the Axon 7. You can do this by opening a terminal window in your computer, navigating to the folder where your TWRP .img file is located and typing "fastboot oem unlock" and then "fastboot flash twrp-3.0.4-1-ailsa_ii.img" (if you have the fastboot/ADB drivers installed in your computer). Then you can use your volume keys to navigate in fastboot and choose to boot into your recovery, which will be TWRP. Once there, you can flash anything you want.

We trying to root b25, if we do that eventually we'll be able to root out phones but we'll end up with b19 instead
I used axon 7 toolkit and did the BL unlock and root from there. I'm on B25. Please read that thread and FAQ to get decent information.
Keep in mind that if you want to use Magisk to keep Android Pay, B19 is the latest version it works on AFAIK. Otherwise, you can just flash a B25 zip after rooting via B19.
The problem is you can't access fastboot in b25 so you need to install TWRP in B19 before updating to B25. I just tried the default unlock option in the toolkit and fastboot still doesn't work, then I tried the workaround listed in the thread and that bricked my phone.

Did everything specified in the thread. I now have B25 from DrakenFX's zipped file and TWRP.
However, I have a ROOT that does not stick. I flashed the SuperSU 2.79 in the thread, and only in the first few moments after booting, the Root Checker App confirm Root.
Then afterwards, SuperSU reported it couldn't find its own binaries.
Looks like the original post in the Axon7Toolkit no longer has the procedure. Mind if I ask what you did after flashing DrakenFX's B19 bootstack and stocksystem?
Also, anyone figured out how to swap Root Manager apps. I am thinking of trying Magisk, but I need to remove SuperSU and I don't know what Magisk files to use...

To swap to Magisk you can use the instructions from the AX7 Kernel topic:

Ended up doing this, and here is my experience.
Swapping did not work. According the unSU thread. This would work only if the dev's tool can find the backup files SuperSu saved (I did multiple flashes of SuperSU).
So I followed his recommendation, flashed a boot.img and system.img (basically reflashed DrakenFX's B25 modded images).
Then I flashed Magisk v13.170612 (is this the beta) since people have problems with v12 on B25. Root was never present. Though I still kept TWRP.
Will try Magisk v12. f this is no good. I will stick with a the half-baked SuperSU, which is not a good solution by any means.
Another point of interest. Magisk Manager cannot be found in the AppStore. Installing from the APK was not possible, the OS claimed the file was corrupt.
Looks like Magisk is out of the question for SafetyNet....
Update:
Reflashed B25 bootstack and stocksystem. Flashed Magisk v12. No root after reboot
This time however, I successfully installed Magisk Manager. Not sure why the OS complained the apk was corrupt last time since I use the same SD card to store the file.
Since I had no root, and was just playing with it, I decided to boot to recovery and flash Magisk v13. Rebooted. Root Checker was able to confirm I was rooted. Why? Who knows
However, Magisk Manager claimed it cannot find MagiskSU binaries (which was the same problem I had when flashing SuperSU).
To futher test Root, I installed Greenify, Wakelock Detector, and Quickboot app called Power Menu. Greenify and Power Menu detected root and worked flawlessly. WLD did not, and caused Magisk Manager to force exit.
So, the conclusion is, while the Root Checker claims I have full Root (despite to MagiskSU binaries found) some apps will detect root, and some won't. For me this is OK. Since I just needed a few apps with root anyway.
To summarize my steps. Use these steps. As always, READ everything for I won't be responsible for anything .
1a. Start from: "UPDATING FROM B20_Boot / B20 / B27 / B29 / B15(N) / B19(N) "
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2
1b. In step 7 (instead of flashing SuperSU), flash Magisk v12. Download Magisk v12, v13 and Magisk Manager from:
v12 & Manager
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
v13 (the one I used)
https://github.com/stangri/MagiskFiles/blob/master/Magisk-v13-170612.zip
2. When rebooted, install the Magisk Manager APK.
3. Reboot to TWRP recovery, flash Magisk v13.
4. Reboot, and test root with Root Checker. It should pass, but try it out yourself.
I did test SafetyNet, and that's a no-go. But that's OK with me. Still have B25(N) and root (kind of!)
Did you run "reboot disemmcwp" from terminal to enable writing to your system?
Followed my steps and did "reboot disemmcwp"after Step 1b.
Magisk v12 still provided no root. Flashing over with v13 did ("conditionally", as mentioned above).
So, no change.
Is there a similar method for the z971(blade spark) because I can't find root or any custom recovery or any method to unlock bootloader...... Thank you

There doesn't seem to be a comprehensive guide on this, so I thought I would provide one.
READ THIS FIRST
DO NOT TAKE ANY OTA UPDATES!!!
Please consider the following:
Ask yourself these two questions: "Why do I want to unlock my bootloader? Why do I need root access?" If the answer to either one of those is "I don't know," don't do it. Both of these actions weaken the security of your phone, and there's no reason to do that if you're not sure why.
This guide is for the Droid Turbo, model XT1254. It is not for the Droid Turbo 2, and it is not for any phone that is not named Droid Turbo.
Standard XDA rules apply. I'm not responsible for anything you do, and neither is anyone else other than you.
I'm assuming that you are running a Windows PC. If you have a Mac, I can't help you. If you're running Linux, you shouldn't need help.
This method is not free. It costs $25 (USD). If that's not okay with you, don't do this.
Once your bootloader is unlocked, you CANNOT safely re-lock and unlock it again. See this thread for what happens when you try to do that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/help/relocked-bootloader-bricked-t3306081#post65095391
Still here? Cool.
Section 0: Installing Firmware Version MCG24.251-5
1. Go to Settings -> About phone -> Build number. If it says SU4TL-44, SU4TL-49 or MCG24.251-5, skip to section 1 of this guide. If it says MCG24.251-5-5, you need to take an extra step to unlock your bootloader. I'll explain later. For now, just skip to section 1 of this guide. If it says anything else, keep reading.
Flashing MCG24.251-5 using this method will erase all of your data. Back up any important files/information before proceeding.
2. Download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790.
3. Download and install the Motorola Device Manager from here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
4. Download the MCG24.251-5 firmware package from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=889764386195901169
5. Extract the contents of the MCG24.251-5 firmware package to the installation directory of Minimal ADB and Fastboot (C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot on any 64-bit installation of Windows).
6. Power off your phone.
7. Hold down the volume down button and power on your phone. Release the volume down button when you see that the phone has booted into bootloader mode. You'll see a dead green android.
8. Plug the phone into your computer.
9. Open the Minimal ADB and Fastboot shortcut on your desktop. This will open a command prompt.
10. Type "fastboot devices" and press enter. If it displays your device's serial number, you're ready to go. If it displays nothing, your computer is not recognizing your device properly.
11. Navigate to the installation directory of Minimal ADB and Fastboot and double click on FlashAll.bat. This will flash MCG24.251-5 to your device and erase all of your data.
12. Use the power button to select Start in the bootloader menu to boot normally.
13. Set up your phone at least to the point where you can install apps if you want to.
For now, just try to ask someone nicely to help you out with this. I'll try to get this done before the end of the day.
Section 1: Unlocking the Bootloader
1. Download Sunshine from here: http://theroot.ninja/download.html
2. Move the apk file to a convenient location on your phone. If you downloaded it with your phone, it's in your downloads folder already, so leave it there.
3. Use any file browser on your phone to navigate to the folder that contains the Sunshine apk file. Tap on it to install it.
4. If a message comes up and says that you need to enable installation of apps from unknown sources, follow the instructions on that message to enable it.
5. Enable Wi-Fi on your phone if it is disabled. Even if you aren't connected to a Wi-Fi network, it still needs to be on.
6. !!!DO THIS STEP ONLY IF YOU'RE ON MCG24.251-5-5!!! Follow the instructions here to obtain temporary root: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g4-play/development/root-autoinitroot-motorola-bootloader-t3639316/. DO NOT perform the uninstall step.
7. Open your app drawer and start Sunshine.
8. Follow the instructions.
9. !!!FOR MCG24.251-5-5 ONLY!!! Sunshine will reboot your phone automatically, and it will go into a bootloop. This is normal. Don't panic. Hold down the volume down button until the phone goes into bootloader mode. Plug your phone into the computer, start Minimal ADB and Fastboot (see Section 0 for link if you didn't have to install it before this point), and enter the command fastboot oem config fsg-id "". This will disable the temporary root exploit. Reboot your phone normally, and everything should be happy again.
10. If, when your phone reboots, you see a "Warning: The bootloader is unlocked" message, you have successfully unlocked your bootloader. If you do not see this message, open Sunshine again and follow the directions again. If you're on MCG24.251-5-5, you'll have to gain and uninstall temproot again at the appropriate times.
Section 2: Installing TWRP
Team Win Recovery Project is arguably the most important tool to have on a bootloader-unlocked phone. This is how you install it:
1. Download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317790. If you already did this in section 0, you don't have to do it again.
2. Download the latest TWRP .img file from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=39562
NOTE: The TWRP file that you download should have a .img extension. Make sure you can see this. If you don't see .img at the end of the filename, Google how to make file extensions visible on your version of Windows and do it. If you do not do this, you may run into trouble later.
3. Download and install the Motorola Device Manager from here: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481. If you already did this in section 0, you don't have to do it again.
3. Rename the file that you downloaded in step 2 to TWRP.img
4. Copy TWRP.img to the directory that you installed Minimal ADB and Fastboot to. The default location on an installation of 64-bit Windows is C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
5. Turn off your phone.
6. Hold the volume down button and press the power button to boot into bootloader mode. You should see a green android lying on his back with his chest open, and some information about your phone. Poor little guy...
7. Plug your phone into your PC.
8. Double click on the Minimal ADB and Fastboot shortcut that's on your desktop. It will open a command prompt.
9. Type "fastboot devices" without quotes and press enter. If it gives you your phone's serial number, you're good to go. If it gives you nothing, your device is not detected. This can happen for several reasons, and I won't discuss them here. However, if you followed these directions and all of your hardware is functioning properly, you should be good to go.
10. Type "fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img" without quotes and press enter. It should tell you that the flash was successful. You might see some "not found" errors. These are normal and can be ignored.
11. Highlight "Recovery mode" on your phone using the volume up and down buttons.
12. Press the power button to boot into TWRP.
13. TWRP will boot, and it will ask you if you want to allow write access to the system partition. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ALLOW THIS. Check the box that says to never ask this question again.
14. Select Reboot, followed by System to boot the phone normally.
Section 3: Gaining Root Access
If you intend to install a custom rom, these steps are not necessary. Custom roms almost always come with root access built in. Refer to the thread of your custom rom of choice for installation instructions.
If you do not want a custom rom, and you simply want root access on the stock Droid Turbo rom, continue reading.
1. If you are on the stock marshmallow rom, build MCG24.251-5 or higher, download the latest version of both Magisk and Magisk Manager to your phone: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445.
NOTE: You need to be on marshmallow to use Magisk to root your phone. The Magisk thread says it supports lollipop and higher, but it only supports lollipop for some stock Samsung roms. This does not apply to you. If you want to root your phone on lollipop, you'll need to use SuperSU. I won't go into that here because I don't think there is a lot of demand for it, but if you need help with that, reach out to someone here. It's not difficult.
2. Install Magisk Manager the same way you installed Sunshine.
3. Turn off your phone.
4. Hold the volume down button and press the power button to boot into bootloader mode. You should see a green android lying on his back with his chest open, and some information about your phone. Andy, what have they done to you?
5. Use the volume up and down buttons to highlight "Recovery mode."
6. Press the power button to select Recovery mode.
7. Select Install from the TWRP main menu.
8. Select the most recent version of Magisk (the .zip file, NOT the Magisk Manager .apk file) that you downloaded.
9. Swipe the bar at the bottom of the screen to flash this zip file.
10. When it finishes, select Wipe Cache/Dalvik and swipe the bar at the bottom of the screen.
11. Select Reboot System
Section 4: Passing Safetynet using Stock, Unrooted Marshmallow
If you are running stock marshmallow with an unlocked bootloader, you will fail safetynet verification (and be unable to use Android Pay). Installing Magisk is the only recommended method, as of this writing, to bypass this limitation. If you completed Section 3, you shouldn't have any trouble. Understand, however, that there is a constant game of cat and mouse going on between Google and Magisk's developer, so sometimes Google will update safetynet to beat Magisk. If that happens, wait for Magisk Manager to tell you that a new version of Magisk is available, and it will install the new version for you. That's your best bet for passing safetynet again.
If you really want to pass safetynet, but you really don't want to be rooted, you can disable root (Superuser access) in the Magisk Manager settings.

Section 6: Troubleshooting
Issue: When you try to boot TWRP, you see a screen that says "no command." TWRP does not boot.
Solution: The screen you are seeing is the stock Droid Turbo recovery menu (the menu that you're trying to replace with TWRP). If you see this after flashing TWRP, one of two things happened:
-You did not boot into the recovery menu immediately after flashing TWRP, and it was therefore replaced by the stock recovery menu.
-When you flashed TWRP, the process did not complete successfully.
The solution to both of these problems is to repeat section 2 and follow the instructions more carefully.
Issue: When TWRP asked you if you wanted to allow write access to the system partition, you selected no. Now you cannot flash anything.
Solution: At the main TWRP menu, select Mount. Uncheck the box that says "Mount system partition as read-only."
Issue: Fastboot says "cannot load TWRP.img" when you try to flash it.
Solution: This error indicates that Fastboot cannot find TWRP.img. The most common source of this problem is that you did not make your file extensions visible, and so when you renamed the TWRP file to TWRP.img, you actually renamed it to TWRP.img.img (including the hidden .img file extension that you didn't realize was there). Google how to enable file extensions on your version of Windows, follow those instructions, and if this is the issue you will see it.
nice write up - will follow these when I get my phone tomorrow.
worked!
Just tried this. Worked amazingly, and exactly as you described! Thanks!!
Thanks just got this phone yesterday. I came from a Verizon s4 with a unlockable bootloader so now running cm on a phone is really awesome for me. Although I was concerned about the $25. I love paying people for there work but it seemed different and I was expecting the app to be a scam or something. However everything went okay. I wish there was a way to get viper4android working. Does anyone know about that? I thought installing cm would have fixed the issue. Anyways thanks a lot. I wonder if I can change my username. Lol.

Nope, no matter what I do, it stays on that screen. I have to reboot and then it returns to normal. I've followed all of the steps twice now and got the same results each time. I do have the phone still plugged into the computer charging.

Lol.

The screen that you're seeing is the stock Droid Turbo recovery menu, which means that TWRP is not getting flashed. What result does it give you after section 2, step 10?

Yeah, I did the exact same thing. The MDK bootloader is golden. I broke my phone once and almost cried. Luckily, I was able to get another MDK on Swappa. The seller wasn't even charging extra for it! He/she must not have known what they had.
As for Viper4Android, I've added a link to section 4 that you might want to look at.

successful for me, thanks!
to comment on @22e issue, I had the same problem. i was able to correct it by copying the TWRP.img file to the same directory as the minimal adb fastboot files were installed in.
also, a shortcut after flashing TWRP is to type "fastboot reboot-bootloader". this will return back to bootloader rather than having to reboot, power off, and then press the buttons to get to bootloader.
hope this helps.
Awesome post. It definitely will come in handy. One question, at what point should I create a backup image via twrp? Is it before section 3 step 7?

Thanks for the help.
After I got stuck, I downloaded and installed KingRoot. It successfully rooted my phone. I downloaded two different root checkers and they confirmed. Everything works correctly within Rom Toolbox Pro now, I can remove apps (stupid NFL mobile, Amazon, etc). My software status says "Modified". I did not need to format or anything like that. Is that normal? My only issues are with XBlast Tools and SuperSU, when I change a setting in XBlast, it does NOT get updated. Even after a reboot. In SuperSU cannot update binaries for some reason.
I cannot post outside links for screen shots yet.
EDIT: Fixed! Big thanks to @S0wL , @bkores , @tamahouse02 and @tron1 for the help. I made a guide to help other people with the same problem:
Guide to get TWRP again HERE
Okay, it seems to me that I messed up kinda badly. The phone is fully operational, but after I got to 7.0 the stock recovery replaced good ol' TWRP... which left me with an unlocked bootloader and an useless recovery. I have no root, and that's pretty much the only thing that matters to me. I downloaded @bkores 's Axon7Toolkit but there is NO way to get fastboot on the damned thing. After the program tries to get to bl mode (I assume adb reboot bootloader?) the ZTE logo flashes and the unlocked BL image appears, then the phone starts as normal.
Same thing with the leaked 7.1.1, no difference.
I tried EDL, recovery, that shady factory test mode thing, no one gives fastboot... Any ideas as to why I can't get there??+
I suspect it may be something related to the OEM unlocking option in the dev options, but it is set to ON and greyed out. so no idea
Try the menu on the boot screen.

Sounds like the issue is with the ROM like it is somehow blocking you from accessing bootloader mode. It's definitely not my toolkit.

Feel the same, 7.1.1 stock recovery is evil, it keep coming back after flash twrp. LOL
Here what I didi to get twrp on 7.1.1:
1. Use axon7tool -w recovery (twrp of couse)
2. Watch closely the cmd, when it said "Successful!","Reboot in 5 second" - unplug your phone
3. Use Volume Up + Power to get to recovery (twrp)
4. Mount > Mount System (dont check read only)
5. Flash something - I don't know - But I get the feeling that it stop stock recovery coming back - I personally flash Chinese Modem (because I have to ))
6. Reboot system
@bkores Yeah I'm pretty sure it's not your toolkit since I can't access it even with key comb, adb, option on the unl bl page...
@lafester Nope, tried many times. It just boots to normal whenever I select fastboot
@tamahouse02 Well I believe that should work, but I can't get axon7tool not to crash... I'll keep trying, maybe it's a driver or sth.

Official 3.0.4.1
@tamahouse02
The latest "official" TWRP is at TWRP site https://twrp.me/devices/zteaxon7.html , version 3.1.0-0.
Is there any problem using it instead of the previous "official" 3.0.4.1 ?
Edit: I also read on TWRP site:
"Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install."
This is in sync with your information requiring to reboot immediately to TWRP (step 2 and 3).

I use 3.0.4.1 because I flash plenty things before without any issue, so I keep using it.
After write recovery by axon7tool, it's reboot automatically and override the recovery, that why I have to unplug to stop the reboot, and also flash all I can - fortunaeally it also stop recovery be overrided

I've been in the same situation like you @Choose an username... Updated to nougat on G model and I had not bootloader. This is what I did :
1. Downloaded the tool from here https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/tool-axon7toolkit-t3573108
2. Installed the driver using the install driver option that you can choose once you connect you phone to your computer
3. Use the tool to perform the unlock bootloader command again even though you have unlocked it before
4. Use the tool to install twrp, it will boot the phone in twrp
5. Flash Supersu before you boot the system first time after flashing twrp
5. Install whatever version of android want after

I thought you had already unlocked bootloader? Why have you done it twice?
I *just bought Mi A1, and I want the Night Light feature. And the blue accents (I love it).
I enabled OEM unlocking, enabled USB debugging. adb recognized my phone, and I rebooted it to bootloader (fastboot).
HOWEVER, fastboot devices brought up no devices - the phone is not being recognized.
I used the AIO tool here, and I'm getting the same results. Interestingly, when I reboot to the bootloader, the phone switches off after 30 seconds or so, and instead starts charging (cuz it's connected to my laptop) but it stays in fastboot if I use Vol - and power button.
I could be missing USB drivers, I supposed. I had installed drivers from the AIO tool, am I missing something?
Help appreciated, thanks!
If phone switches off/reboots in fastboot mode, it usually means that drivers are installed incorrectly. Find phone in device manager and install drivers manually from there.

For example here and just follow the video guide in the post for both ADB and Fastboot drivers installation.
With your phone in fastboot mode, look in device manager, there is probably a device that does not have drivers. If you have already installed them, you can try having Windows search for them. Then you would validate by doing a fastboot devices command from command prompt.
I have managed to get it working, I've flashed TWRP, however it goes into a bootloop with linux penguin, then a white background with Google colors and an open lock at the bottom, reading "Unlocked".
Strangely, if I flash TWRP with the AIO tool, the phone boots into system rather than loading into TWRP ?
Any reason for the peculiarity!?
Also, I can't reboot the phone.
And for some reason, my phone is encrypted!
Don't flash TWRP, just boot into it when you need it. From what I read you can't have TWRP + Magisk installed at the same time, so IMHO it's not worth the effort. Personally I use TWRP only to install Magisk..
Why do you want to keep phone decrypted? There is zero performance hit with encryption and it's, well, more secure

Well... I thought that the encryption is preventing my phone from booting. Strangely, flashing TWRP 3.2 using the AIO boots my phone to system, so at least I can use my phone.

ALSO, do I have to install magisk on both the slots?
I suppose that you want to root your system in the easiest possible way, I'd suggest:
1. flash December fastboot ROM (MiFlash or via fastboot directly, keep user data). This will flash full December ROM to BOTH slots and set slot A as active. At this point you have fully stock device.
2. unlock bootloader
3. fastboot into TWRP
4. flash Magisk
That's it. Magisk will be installed only into the active slot A. There is probably no reason to install it also in slot B. If you want to return to stock, it is enough to restore boot.img, either from Magisk app directly, or via fastboot.

So, I flashed the December fastboot ROM, unlocked my bootloader, booted to TWRP and installed Magisk v14 (latest). It installed without issues, but when I try to boot, it goes into a boot loop.
Also, when I boot using TWRP (no modifications) my hotspot doesn't seem to work, I have to restart my phone to fix it.
Well, I guess I'll try it once more...
Damn, it worked! Magisk installed and phone boots well. The phone gives a warning before booting, that it can't be checked for corruption (probably because of the unlocking I guess).
Now, onto installing the Magisk module which gives me to use GCAM (HAL3) and nightlight.
Just a note, Magisk v14 doesn't work well with dual partitions, this might explain strange behavior. Use official Magisk beta v 14.4 or 14.5.
Phone: A6010
OOS: 9.0.17
TWRP: twrp-3.2.3-x_blu_spark_v9.91_op6

Hello folks. This issue started happening last night. I rebooted the phone (hold down Power button, hit Restart), but when it rebooted, it stayed on the "bootloader unlocked" warning screen for a long time, and would then enter the bootloader. This has never happened before, even after the latest OTA update to 9.0.17 (after which the phone was successfully re-rooted following these instructions.)
If "Power Off" was selected, the screen would turn off without the corresponding buzz from the internal vibrator to show that the phone was powered down. Instead, it would reboot into Fastboot mode and then into the bootloader.
I've tried the following steps to troubleshoot:
1. fastboot boot twrp-3.2.3-x_blu_spark_v9.91_op6.img
adb sideload twrp-3.2.3-x_blu_spark_v9.91_op6.zip and reboot into recovery
adb sideload Magisk-v19.3.zip
Result: stuck at "bootloader unlocked" warning screen & enters bootloader
2. Tried the same steps in #1 but with Magisk v19.4 and 20.0. Same result.
3. Same steps in #1 but flashed Magisk-uninstaller-20191011.zip as the final step. Result, phone boots up correctly but without root.
4. Rebooted into bootloader
fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-8-fajita.img
copied the same file to phone & Advanced -> Install Recovery Ramdisk -> twrp-3.3.1-8-fajita.img
reboot into Recovery & adb sideload Magisk-v19.4.zip
Same result as before, stuck at warning screen and then into bootloader.
5. Re-did #3 i.e. back to twrp-3.2.3-x_blu_spark_v9.91_op6 and uninstalled Magisk. Phone once again boots up correctly but without root. This is where I am now.
The phone can successfully boot to Recovery from Bootloader. I also tried to power down the phone from Recovery mode, which it did correctly (with corresponding vibrator buzz), but when powered back on would go back to "warning screen"/bootloader issue when Magisk was still installed.
Without Magisk, the phone powers down correctly, boots up correctly, and reboots correctly albeit all without root.
At this point, i've no idea what's going on or how to proceed further. There are some threads discussing MsmDownloadTool but the latest version available is for 9.0.16 in this thread, which i think can't be used for 9.0.17.
Suggestions on how to proceed would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

MSM is your way to go. It will downgrade your phone to 9.0.17 and lock your Bootloader. After that you can unlock it and take the OTA Again. You will lose all your Data. Another thing you can try is to Format Data in TWRP. That will also cause you to loose all your Data but you might be able to boot up with Root.

Thank you for the reply.
At this point, I'm kinda resigned to losing all data, so i did a backup this morning. However, I need my phone to be functional over this weekend, and will do as you have suggested on Monday after another backup.
Will start with the Format Data in TWRP method first, since i'm running Linux and have to setup a VM with USB passthrough to run Win7 and Msm.
Just to confirm, since i'm already running 9.0.17, is it okay simply to use MsmDownloadTool v4.0.59 if it comes to that? Thanks in advance.
On a sidenote, since data loss is inevitable, once it's confirmed that the phone boots up correctly with root and stock OOS, it may just be worth moving to LOS16 thereafter.
Mannan Qamar said:
MSM is your way to go. It will downgrade your phone to 9.0.17 and lock your Bootloader. After that you can unlock it and take the OTA Again. You will lose all your Data. Another thing you can try is to Format Data in TWRP. That will also cause you to loose all your Data but you might be able to boot up with Root.

I had time today, and tried Format Data. Didn't work. Installing Magisk landed the phone in the same error screen.
So the Win7 VM was fired up and the instructions for Msm were followed. The phone is recognized and the drivers were successfully installed, showing up as Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)
However, when MsmDownloadTool V4.0.59 -- 9.0.16 was launched and Start was pressed, the operation times out with the message "Sahara Communication Failed. Please try again after power off phone."
This is despite powering off using the normal method within OOS itself, or powering off from within TWRP.
Not sure how to proceed. Please help?

Could be an issue with the VM. I'd also try to change USB Port or try another Cable.

Phone: A6010
OOS: 9.0.17
TWRP: twrp-3.2.3-x_blu_spark_v9.91_op6
Magisk: Magisk-v19.3
PC OS: Manjaro Linux with Android SDK tools

Why are you using TWRP from OP6 so old too? Here for OP6T there is newer https://github.com/engstk/android_device_oneplus_fajita/releases/tag/v9.101

I have updated to the latest TWRP as you have mentioned. The issue still persists when Magisk is installed. Once again, Magisk had to be uninstalled before the phone would boot up properly.

I tried with 2 different USB ports today. Tomorrow i will reboot the VM, remove the driver, let it re-discover and install the driver from MS (i installed a pre-downloaded driver today) and try again. The cable is the original one that came with the phone, and another one will need to be purchased if the efforts fail. Hopefully it is just the VM acting funny.

No that won't be necessary. As the drivers can't be downloaded from MS. Is your phone able to reboot to Recovery? i.e. do you have TWRP Installed? If so, then flash Latest OOS ZIP and TWRP Installer, Reboot and repeat the two above steps. After that Format Data and Reboot. This should allow you to boot up. After that, proceed to root as you normally would. Also, I'd look into getting a Windows Laptop if it doesn't work. As MSM is known to have issues with VM.

Yes, i have twrp-3.3.1-x_blu_spark_v9.101_op6t currently installed without Magisk. Will do as you have said tomorrow, since i have also downloaded the full 9.0.17 OOS zip file.
Since budget is very tight at the moment, i will look into borrowing a Windows PC/laptop for awhile to use Msm if the other methods don't work.

Wait, wouldn't flashing back to 9.0.17 lock your bootloader? Then you can't enable OEM unlocking, which means you can't unlock the bootloader. You would need to flash MSM 9.0.11 to enable OEM unlocking, then unlock the bootloader before proceeding further. I'm no expert, just thought I'd mention it. Best of luck!!

This worked, and now the phone is booted up into the system WITH Magisk 19.4 installed. Thank you very much! I didn't have to use Msm.
The steps for anyone else facing the same issue that i did:
Reboot into Recovery. This can be done via long-press power button in System and pressing Recovery if TWRP is already installed, or adb reboot bootloader to reboot into the bootloader, and fastboot boot recoveryImage_Filename.img (in my case, it was twrp-3.3.1-x_blu_spark_v9.101_op6t.img)
Enter password/pattern to unlock
Advanced -> ADB Sideload -> adb sideload OOSimage_Filename.zip (in my case, it was OnePlus6TOxygen_34_OTA_024_all_1909112343_d5b1905.zip)
Back
ADB Sideload -> adb sideload TWRPzipFile_Filename.zip (in my case, it was twrp-3.3.1-x_blu_spark_v9.101_op6t.zip)
Back -> Back Arrow
Reboot -> Recovery, and wait for phone to reboot into Recovery
Enter password/pattern to unlock
Advanced -> ADB Sideload -> adb sideload OOSimage_Filename.zip
Back
ADB Sideload -> adb sideload TWRPzipFile_Filename.zip
Back -> Back Arrow
Wipe -> Format Data -> type "yes" and click the blue tick "Enter" key on keyboard.
Back Arrow to Main Screen -> Reboot -> Recovery, and wait for phone to reboot into Recovery
Enter password/pattern to unlock
Advanced -> ADB Sideload -> adb sideload MagiskInstaller.zip (in my case, it was Magisk-v19.4.zip)
Back -> Back Arrow
Reboot -> Power Off to completely power down.
Long-press power button to boot the phone. The issue of being stuck at the bootloader unlocked warning screen was gone. The phone booted into System with Magisk Root installed and working.
Later today, I will install LOS16 with Magisk and report back on how that went. Once again, much gratitude and appreciation to Mannan Qamar for the solution!

Glad to know it worked. MSM should be a last resort but most people use it as a first option to Nuke their phone. And if you want help on installing ROMs, don't hesitate to ask.

LOS16 was installed successfully with Magisk and i spent nearly 7 hours setting up the phone since opbackup could not be seen by OnePlus Switch, and i had to do everything manually.
Suddenly the screen started flashing all sorts of colours. I rebooted, and the same problem came back, i.e. stuck at the warning screen.
So, i used the instructions you provided and got OOS 9.0.17 booted back up with Magisk 19.4. However, when i try to connect to the phone via USB, even with debugging enabled, the internal storage cannot be read. Says "enable MTP." This is also happening in TWRP even after disabling and re-enabling MTP.
How do i get the phone to see the internal storage again? Please help.

Format Data in TWRP. For some weird reason, Internal Storage gets messed up after flashing OOS. And the screen issue might have been a Magisk Module or some other error. Maybe an issue with the ROM. I'd certainly try another ROM

I'm going to do the whole process all over again, just to be sure, and try to copy the necessary files over to internal storage before flashing Magisk. Will update once the process gets there. I'm going back to rooted OOS for now because nearly 7 hours of setup is not fun in the least for a daily driver phone.

I managed to copy over the files in TWRP, with internal storage showing up as Internal Storage (A6013). However, once booted into system, it now shows up as Internal Shared Storage (A6010) with nothing in it. Using the phone's File Manager, the copied files do not show up either.
But going back to TWRP, Internal Storage shows up correctly with the copied files. Did Format Data in TWRP and rebooted into system. Still the same issue. Please help?
Edit: tried doing the same method all over again. This time, the MTP error shows up in TWRP also. Can't see anything anymore.

Well. In such a case MSM is the way to go. I'd recommend using a Windows Laptop. Although as a last resort if try the Fastboot ROMs before MSM. Search OP6T Fastboot ROMs

I found this thread and downloaded the appropriate Fastboot ROM (9.0.17). Just a couple of questions:
1. do i need to do the persist partition step?
2. where in TWRP do i have to go to do adb push and adb shell?

Those things are not necessary. Just unzip and use the Flasher in the archive. The default one should be sufficient. The others aren't needed.

Hopefully it works from the VM. Otherwise i will have to do it manually from Linux terminal. Thank you for the advice. Will report tomorrow when the process is done.
I rooted my OP8-Pro. I followed the instructions in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVABAEGRgew.
To summarize, his steps were as follows:
1. Unlock the bootloader
2. Extract boot.img file from payload bin file (on Windows)
3. Install Magisk Canary 2020 app on the phone
4. Install the boot.img file through Magisk
5. Download Fastboot.zip in Windows and extract files
6. Download and place magisk.patched file in Fastboot folder
7. Connect the phone to Windows, use cmd to boot into bootloader
8. Flash the magisk.patched file on the device and reboot
This is a new method to me. In the past rooting always involved TWRP. Root checker shows that the phone is rooted but other features have stopped working.
WiFi no longer works. Even if I turn it on, it turns itself off. Camera keeps crashing and I can't even change the camera mode once I launch the app. My phone also rebooted itself a couple of times while I was testing it after root.
I also rooted my One Plus 6 in 2019 but had to use a custom TWRP (Bluspark) for it to be stable.
I rather start over with a factory reset than try to repair the device in it's current state (but will try to repair it if it's easier). I prefer to stick with the factory ROM and only need root for one app.
Try latest stable magisk instead of canary. Mine works perfectly with regular magisk
I used the all in one tool by mauronafrio here. Worked flawlessly.

So I tried that tool. I tried to flash factory image downloaded directly from One Plus website and kept getting the following error message:
"Error: flash-all.exe or flash-all.bat or flash_all.bat or flashall.bat not found!!!"
I think this has to do with the fact that I am using a secondary hard drive on my computer to store all the downloaded files and the bat file is supposed to be in the same folder as the zip file.
I also reset it to factory settings from the recovery mode but that didn't fix the WiFi issue.
Then I ran TWRP from the All in one Tool and installed the factory firmware from phone's internal memory. This soft bricked my phone.
After getting soft-bricked I installed Magisk through the tool but that didn't fix the issue.
Now it is stuck in a boot loop and keeps going into recovery mode. I can also boot into Fastboot mode and install zips through there but I would like to unbrick it first. Is there an alternative ROM that can unbrick it?
I think I am going to try and use the unbrick tool first and if that doesn't work I will try the Fastboot ROM, that already comes with the bat file.
I am a little confused as to which version goes on my phone though. They have Indian, Global and European versions but I live in the U.S. Global seems to be the most appropriate for my phone but I don't want to install the wrong ROM on it.
I remember reading that you can run into WiFi issues if you flashed the wrong version (from a different region) for your phone
I've rooted for many years and this is the first time I didn't go through TWRP as well.
If you use the unbrick tool you'll probably get issues with the fingerprint reader. But that's fixable, after you've rooted.
The easiest way to get root is to just unlock the bootloader, fastboot boot twrp (not flash), and then flash magisk 20.4 stable.
Before TWRP you had to patch the boot.img and fastboot flash it, but with twrp there is no need for it.

Thanks for letting me know. I attempted to use the unbrick tool but it had problems connecting to the phone. And I also didn't want to run into finger print issues.
I downloaded the patched Rom (with flash-all.bat file included) and installed it via All in one tool. That unbricked the phone and I reset the system to start from scratch. I used the global / international version for my North American phone.
After setting up the phone, I rebooted into Fastboot and loaded TWRP via All in one tool and installed Magisk 20.4 and got the phone rooted.
Root checker shows the phone is now rooted. WiFi and camera also work. I am ready to transfer data from the old phone.
This would have gone smoother if I had just used the correct version of Magisk from the start.
