onward - G3 General

Well it has been a little over a year since I got my slightly used G3 (d851). It has been fun but time to move on to better things. Before I go I just want to say a few things.
1. The G3 was a solid reliable phone at a low price
2. It did everything I needed and had decent specs
3. Although some of the quality was missing like the cracks on top and bottom around the mics even though it lived its whole life in a case
4. It is still better than g4, g5 , v10 since they were plagued with hardware bootloops
My device is still running good but I miss my galaxy note (had note 2) and am returning to that line. Today my note 5 arrives. Even though the note 5 has the major flaw of no sdcard I found a way around that.
I will not miss my G3 much but would recommend it over most any midgrade device on the market today. It is still a strong performer and at a little over $150 for new or less than $90 used has plenty of bang for the buck for an older device.
Goodbye G3 users/devs keep on enjoying a good device and see y'all around.

Sold my G3 =(

It is with pain that I've sold my LG G3 D855, great looking and powerfull phone, but with the locked bootloader and the current unstable LG software, I decided to sell it and I've now ordered the Oneplus One.
I really like to have control over MY phone and the LG G3 I felt limited to what I could do with it, specially knowing that the phone had the possibilities to do so much more and be a lot more stable/fast, I paid for the phone, I want to use the way I want to, not the way LG wants me to... Let me know if I'm the only one that feels this way about your G3?
Now waiting for the OPO and looking at the forums here, it is exactly what I need, a fast, customizable phone, that does not lose warranty by unlocking the bootloader.
I'll let you know when I get it, how I feel about it, compared to the G3.
You are overdramatizing things. The unlock will happen, in time. Go post in the OPO forums .
I dont care....
No one cares
I had the OnePlusOne... Multiple times. It's a great phone as well. The phone is a phablet and if that is what you want then go for it. But the yellow tint on the bottom of the screen kills it for me on the OPO.
I've had both. The OPO is a great phone in theory, but if you ever need warranty or service support, you may never get it. I tried to contact support multiple times and they never replied. You really do get what you pay for. You'll get great hardware, but zero support. A warranty isn't worth anything if the company won't actually respond.

I can never keep a phone for over a month, was expecting that the G3 would change this by doing everything I wanted it to, didn't happen, lol, so a month later and going to try a different phone now, still waiting for the perfect fit... having this said, the Warranty is not an issue, if I don't like it, I'll sell it and then comes the next one, but really hope that the OPO will be good enough to keep.
From all the phones I had (HTC One X, BB Z10, BB Q5, BB Z30, HTC One M7, Samsung S4, LG G2, Pantech Vega Iron, Note 2, Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and recently LG G3 (not in order of purchase)), the one that I keep going for, is the HTC One M7, but the screen is too small and the pink tint on the photos just puts me off every time, but in terms of stability and speed, it's always smooth and a lot of support from the developer community, making a fun phone to play with.
Get a nexus device if you want complete control! Boot unlock will come just patients is key!

If i sold my G3, it would only be for a Note 4 for two reasons.
1. Samsung usually (maybe always?) releases their products up here in canada with unlocked bootloaders, this is my first LG phone i owned in canada and i wasn't really thinking the bootloader was going to be locked, but it is Samsung 1 // LG 0
2. just theoretically thinking here, but since the snapdragon 805 has 40% increased gpu performance/efficency, just underclock that shiznit around 40% and you could theoretically get up to 40% increased power savings over the snapdragon 801 with the same performance as the 801, this could result in some MASSIVE screen on time over the G3. Samsung 2 // LG 0
The thing that really makes me preferring the G3>Note 4 is the form factor & the skinny bezels.
I know the note 4 is the same size as the note 3 and it's just too big, the G3 basically despite nearly having the same size screen feels like a phone and i can use it with 1 hand no matter what i'm doing.
Where as the note 4 does not feel like a phone at all, it definitely feels like a phablet and most of the time it takes 2 hands to operate properly which is a serious downside considering you basically lose 1 handed use for 0.2 inches of screen. this for me is like +3 points to LG forreal, which is why i'm probly gonna keep the G3. Samsung 2 // LG 3
Although i still want my custom kernels & roms really bad and it may drive me to sell my G3 for the Note 4... *Cough* all you LG devs reading this... which i know you are.

I'm not a very patient person, that is a flaw of mine, that is why I sold it, could not wait anymore...

I would like to have the Note 4, but it is way to expensive :s maybe in a 6months when the price drops I'll give it a go...
Now, an update about the OPO, still don't have it, really thought I was going to get it today, but no, ordered on the 20th with express delivery, which was supposed to be delivered between 1 and 3 days, well, third day is gone and still no OPO =( really unhappy, at the moment using my backup Galaxy Nexus, lol...

The one plus one looks like a pretty nice device, If i couldn't have a G3 or a Note 4 i would so go for the one plus one :highfive: maybe i'll get a Note 4 and not like it and end up with a one plus one, who knows haha.
It could be worse, and do like i did one time. I ordered overnight delivery payed like $30 so my product would be 1 day enstead of the free 3 day delivery or w/e it was and i didn't realize the burst of holidays and it took longer than 3 days anyways and still cost me $30 hahaha. Damn did i ever feel retarded when i did that
I also had a Oneplus One. I had multiple dead pixels, the yellow band on the bottom, and a broken vibrate motor. After trying to get a hold of customer service, I was finally able to get a RMA, but getting that cleared took another week. I got tired of the problems I had and all the software glitches that were going on and ended up selling the phone. The G3, to me, is a much superior and solid phone

[Q] Which phone do you recommend me to upgrade to from a N4?

I have had a nexus 4 for almost 2 years and I like it. Even so it has its negative points, especially after all this time. It's not as responsive as it used to be and battery life, which wasn't stellar to begin with, has decayed a lot. With this in mind I have been searching for a good phone to replace it. I was waiting for the Nexus 6 to come out but when it was officially announced that screen size and the price scared me away.
After the announcement I have been searching and comparing a bunch of phones. I was interested on the OnePlus One but the buying process is a pain in the ass. I checked the S5 but then I remembered it had the infamous Touchwiz which I had already (even though in an earlier incarnation) on a Galaxy Ace I had before the N4 and there was also the fact that it is expensive as hell on my carrier. I also checked the HTC One M8 but the camera resolution seems horrible. I have checked the Sony Xperia line but it is as expensive as the S5 in my carrier and also pretty expensive on sites like Amazon. At last I have been comparing between a Nexus 5 and a LG G3. I know they have almost a year between them but I like the fact that the Nexus 5 is cheap and receives fast updates, although I have heard battery life was not improved very much. And, on the G3's side, it is newer, has better hardware and supposedly has a good battery life(I have heard mixed views on this as some say battery is good while others say it is horrible).
So, to sum it up, I would like to know your opinions and would also like to know if you happen to know some other options I haven't considered.
Thanks and sorry for the long post and if this wasn't the right forum to ask this.

Look at an LG G2. $400 for a new one, under $300 for a used one in good/mint condition. Beefy 3000mAh battery, very competent hardware, big screen in a not-so-big body, and a good amount of development if you want to try different ROMs/kernels. As cheap, or even cheaper, than a Nexus 5, but with a much bigger battery and better camera. With the G3 out, prices have plummeted on the G2, and have made it a veritable bargain.
The G3 is a hell of a phone. The QHD screen might drain the battery a bit more, but on this phone the battery is replaceable, so just buy a spare if you're worried about that. Not much development yet, but if you buy the T-Mobile version or one with an unlocked bootloader it's easy to root and modify with Xposed, which gives you plenty of options to tweak it to your satisfaction.
Regarding the HTC One's camera - it's not great, but it's not bad either. If all you're wanting to do is post pics to Facebook or internet forums, it's perfectly fine, since pictures will be reduced anyway. Where it suffers is in cropped detailed pics, and stuff like sweeping vistas and anything far away. That aside, the One is an awesome device.
My personal choice from what's available right now would definitely be the HTC One M8. If you don't care a huge deal about the camera then there are very few flaws to it at all. The camera on the M8 will definitely be worse in normal light than most other flagships but the pictures it takes are still far better than those from the N4 and in low light the camera performs better than most, not to mention the fact that it has good autofocus and a myriad of extra features which you may or may not find useful but they're still nice to have. Battery life is excellent, the screen is absolutely gorgeous, Sense brings extra features and (arguably) a nicer design than AOSP whilst retaining excellent performance and the phone is just generally far nicer to use than anything else I've tried.
Look for the Huawei Honor 6.
300$, full LTE, 16GB upgradable with microSD, beautiful 5" HD screen... I'm gonna buy this phone in the next week for replacement of my N4.
I went from a Nexus 4 to a HTC One M8 and hated it, hence why I'm back with my Nexus 4. That said, I'm definitely in the minority.

G2 is it worth it?

Hey guys, I am looking for a new phone and I stopped with lg g2, xiaomi mi3,nexus 5.
I think the g2 is best and the display is big for the size of the phone. I don't like any lag even the slightest lag in a phone. I am gonna buy the phone second hand with warranty and I usually root and install roms after a few months of stock usage. I am gonna use the phone for about 1,5 - 2 years when I get it and I really don't know which one to buy.
Actually I like them all, but the mi3 is too expensive and can only find new ones that are like 80$ more than second hand g2's with warranty and the nexus 5 is good, but weak battery

I also needed to make the same decision and I finally picked the G2 as it got enough development and the specs are just great for the price.
nexus5 has alot of development but sucks in all the other ways with hardware in my opinion.
Xiaomi mi3, Only a bit of development as Xiaomi isn't the best source releaser and it's kinda huge for its screensize if you compare it to the G2 ain't it?
SO your final pick would probably be the G2 or the N5. But I would personally go for the G2 as the Stock is great and the Camera app is awesome too and the N5 is more like a tester, developer phone so it has really some big ass annoying bugs which you probably don't want. I experienced with my N4 fast draining battery, alot of wifi connection issues. And same goes for almost every nexus device.
So my personal advice is to go with the G2 if you want to live further without much problems and with a long battery life.
And the buttons on the back are damm nice . Plus you got dorimanx kernel with stock roms
I have a n5 and recently bought a g2 mainly for the better camera and battery, however the software imo is a bit lacking and its annoying me to the point where im just going to sell it and keep my n5. Lg's kitkat is simply garbage, its lag city, lg's lollipop isn't available for my phone yet so i have to rely on cm/aosp roms. Since there's so many variations of the g2 not every rom developer supports your phone. I installed around 6 of the most popular roms and found 1 that has all the features i want, gravity box doesn't work on 5.1.1 yet, however i can't get data working on that rom for some reason, seems like the modem isn't compatible with it. So im stuck on kitkat which runs like ****, so i either give up some of the features that i want and run another 5.1.1 rom, or install an older 5.0.2 rom and install gravity box.
Beauty of the n5 is software, every rom works on it, and there's tons of them. There's also a way to stick the g2's battery into it and that's what im going to do once it arrives.
Which g2 model should I look for?
I Am also thinking about meizu m1 note
What's yiur location and network?
If software speed/lag is your deciding factor I'd go with the Nexus 5 everytime. I like LG's 20H firmware but accept that its no where near as fast as 4.4.4 on the Nexus 5. I cant comment on rooted G2 vs rooted N5.
For me, I can live with the speed reduction as the G2 has that killer battery.
I have looked for a replacement for my old HTC Sensation (running Lollipop) for a long time. I just received a brand new G2 from amazon for $236 yesterday. To me nothing could beat the value new or used right now. I have been impressed with the G2 so far and really look forward to it's reported battery life. I'm just (impatiently) waiting for Tmobile to push out Lollipop to my phone and I'll be totally happy!
I considered the Nexus 5, but used models seemed overpriced and I was concerned about battery life. I also looked at the 1st gen Moto X, but the specs were not quite up to the LG G2 and not a large enough leap from my Sensation. Next up was the OPO, good price but it looked huge for me. A 2nd gen Moto G would have been fine, but no LTE, less phone and similar price to the G2. My big issue with the Nexus, Moto and OPO is that they don't support Tmobile Wifi calling.
My wife got a used Samsung S5. It's decent, but very plastic feeling. The S5 specs are not enough an improvement over the G2 for how I use the phone to warrant the $125+ premium for a used phone.
Pending no stupid tax, and the phone works like I think it should, I can't see trading it out for any current phones.
I am from Bulgaria. Well I will buy either nexus 5 or g2. It depends on which one I will find with more warranty and better condition. Thank you all.

Who's stilling holding on?

What do you all think? Stilling holding on to the G2 and running strong? With all these shiny new toys released her recently it's got me wanting to upgrade, yet I'm pretty much in the camp of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I've repaired my G2 now a few times and still come out on top. Who else has had really great success with these phones and still loves rocking the G2 even though it's over two years old now?
Definetly holding on.
Wont let go of back buttons and a phone that fits so well for one handed use. Perfect body ratio and screen dimensions for my needs and of course a battery life that to this day can compete with the latest flagships.
The G5? I'm alright. In my eyes, not worthy to pay all that extra $ when nothing much has changed since 2013.

i agree, although i like the camera hardware on g5 which is way ahead G2 (but still not much ahead of g4)
i also agree on the part about the back buttons... i don't get why they abandoned this? it's more ergonomic with the back buttons...
and the bezel to screen ratio goes down again (g2 still has the highest screen to bezel ratio of any g-series devices)
would rather buy LG Xcam than g5...
the force is still strong in g2... does everything i need very well even today...

The LG G2's SoC is still a better performer than pretty much all budget and mid-range smartphones of 2015. You got a decent 1080p screen, battery life, and it does not get hot like the G3. The G2 does have significant flaws. The GPS has weak reception, and I personally don't like the camera much because it often takes ages to auto-focus, if it can at all. There is likely no official marshmallow update, although there are a few well established AOSP ROMs like CM13. I applied the cardboard fix to the GPS problem (dunno if it works), installed the stripped down D800 lollipop ROM, boosted the sound, and passed the phone to my dad who only really cares about having big screen and loud sound.
Now that the galaxy s7 is out, I'll be looking for an s6 in a few months when prices go down. As much as I like the g2, the horrible gps and mediocre camera ruin it for me - those two things don't seem that important until you really need them. Plus, it's 2016, time to get a phone with a fingerprint scanner.
The only real upgrade for G2 is a SD820 based phone. Sadly, the majority of announced ones are too gimmicky. X performance and Le max pro seem promising but I bet on new nexuses and Motorola. So, that's one more year of g2 rocking.
Still waiting for Vivo XPlay 5 to be released. I also hope, that some other "Chinese" bands will release something new. I'm not really up to changing my LG G2 with decent hardware, support and battery into some crappy LG G5 with that crappy battery and "fancy" modules. Also bye bye back buttons. Perhaps ASUS will release something new with back buttons again, but based on some newer Intel chipset or S820 with battery at least 4000 mAh.
If nothing will be as good as LG G2 was back then, I'm not even thinking about any changes.
I will definitely buy a G5 this summer, but my g2 will stay strong in my gf's hands.

Me, G2 still beat many mid-range phones. Plus, flasholic like me couldn't stand buy a phone then found out that I cant even root it.
I do agree that there hasn't really been anything that has exploded the scene for android phones. I think there is more competition in the race to the bottom with decently priced "mid-range" phones. Pretty excited about the finger print sensor but contactless payments and the added security are really the only reason's I'd argue to upgrade. You know "knock-on-wood" that my phone still stays strong as it's been a great device. Having awesome Devs to upgrade to CM13 and get all the extra software features is awesome!
I am . Not going on another phone ,not now ,I don't really need a fingerprint scanner (to be honest how many ppls are using it ?) ,camera is still doing a great job (don't have any problems with autofocus at all ,maybe in low light condition ) ,battery is still awesome even after 1 year and half of use (still last 1 day with medium use) ,and looking great (just trying to get new cases)
Me too! Not been impressed with the G5 so far. Will still read the reviews and try it out but taller than the G4 with a smaller screen and smaller battery... no thanks. If only they made the G2 again but with the G5 build materials and latest SoC then it would've been perfect for me.
Tried the S7 today but wasn't all that impressed for some reason. Dislike shiny glass back and prefer customisable on-screen buttons.
Hopes resting on the Huawei P9 that is supposed to be 5.2". Hopefully slightly smaller than the P8 with a larger battery.
I'm tying to justify replacing my 2 years old G2 but it appears to be a tough job..
ROM: SRKG2-300
Launcher: Nova Prime. The phone is very smooth.
Battery: About 45 hours with 3-4 SOT which is more than enough for me.
Camera: I'm using Xdabbeb's driver so I have 120FPS slow motion and also 4K recording. I also purchased Xcam LG Settings which is awesome too.
So..basically the main reason I want to upgrade is to have manual controls in the camera (specifically long exposure).
With that in mind, I don't really like the G5.. I don't like the design, the smaller battery, the big size (for the screen) and the HUGE BEZELS.
I kinda liked the V10 but the 808 SOC seems stupid when the 820 is about 50% more efficient.
I did look at the Mi5 which looks awesome but I'm waiting to see the camera review of this phone..
All in all, the G2 is holding strong! Too strong..
One of the best phone ever made
Simply the best ..... No lag...photo quality is superb...display and battery are out of this world....what's not to like !!!
How are you able to get 3-4 hours of SOT!? That's crazy, I've never gotten more than 1.5 hours on mine. I know everyone is different in the use and what they keep on but that's very high!
Anyone else still getting really high battery numbers?

You bought your G2 second hand? If so, go change the damn battery.
Mine is 1.5 years old and I still get 6 hours sot, sometimes more sometimes less depending on usage. Sometimes it reaches 9 hours if I just read ebooks offline (with low brightness).
But I dont know what is on D800 maybe it's carrier stuff that is causing the battery to suck to terribly.
I'd say about 90% of each charge cycle, I get about 5 hours 30 mins sot if I let it die completely. G2 is no joke.
No mine is not second hand. I've already changed the battery out with one from etradesupply. The original one hit the dirt this past summer and it's not on the original stock rom either so no carrier bloat. Crazy that you guys are getting that amount of SOT! Might make my case for a new phone even sooner then.... hahah Not sure I'd want to go through the hassle of finding a new battery supplier. Finding good screen replacements for this device was a PIA alone.

Well....looks like mine might be closer out the door than I thought. I didn't think the battery I bought from Etradesupply was bad since it went from 20mintues SOT to over an 1.5hrs SOT. Looks like I was wrong...
I have come back to the G2 from the land of 5.5" phablets phones!
Got to say its good to be back to a sensible sized device, with a perfectly good set of specs even against everything that has followed it! I went for the G3 when it launched, and simply never felt at home with it compared to the 16Gb D802 that I passed to a family member. I've now picked up a 32Gb D802 in red, in perfect condition for just £100. Rooted, flashed CloudyG2 3.3 .. absolutely the best phone I've ever had, not just from a 'preference' perspective, but compared to most devices that are on the market it is not in any way a bad device to own. In particular I am constantly disappointed by screen to device size ratios, very few ever get close the G2's 75.9% which I see as its greatest asset, add to that a great camera, battery life, and the great button layout and I cannot see my self moving out of this gem for quite some time.

V20 or note 8

Hello friends. Ill try to keep it short. Just switched carriers. Wanted to keep my bill low as possible while still keeping unlimited data. Was able to purchase The v20 for $0 down and monthly for about $16. They didnt have the phone in stock. They then up-sold me to the note 8. $100 down payment and $30 a month. Now Im having buyers remorse. Being users of the v20, is the phone worth returning the note 8 for the v20? Thanks for any opinions.
Beware... Note8 grabs fingerprints off of screen!!!
...just tapped out with a thumb or 2, please don't mind the abbreviations and grammatical faults.
I think Note 8 is the better specially in CPU, RAM and its screen.
About development you will find the Note 8 community is more active than V20.
Two things I don't like in V and Note series is the property feature in Note series the S Pen and the secondary display in V series (except V30), these two features make it difficult to the developers to take advantage of.
So in V30 LG made it easier and it's the right decision from LG.
If you have a choice to LG V30 it would be the best deal.
The V20 is a fantastic device.... But the Note 8 is newer ... But my opinion is that the LG V30 is the better device.
I currently own both, but note 8 is a better choice... if you have the note 8 already, keep it... but if you incline to return it, it should be the v30. not the v20..
If you are into switching roms and such i can tell you that there is alot of talk about how alot of the developers that had been using the v20 have left. Not all of them. There is some really great stuff being worked on but most are leaving because root on latest security patches has proven very difficult and not possible yet. Seems they are headed towards. Note 8. I just got the v20 and it's great but then there is the whole development side that's seemingly a bummer at this point. Fyi
Thank you all for the insight. I was in fact about to get the v30 since they didn't have the v20 in stock. I though that if I'm going to spend 800 on the v30, I may as well spend 800 on the note 8. I habe airways like the note series. But my favorite phone was an lg phone. Nexus 5. I appreciate the comments in regards to custom roms because I for sure enjoy flashing. Thanks again.
V20!
So, I don't have the V20... but, my wife's V10 boot-looped. She got the Note 8. I prefer my not-yet-boot-looped-V10. I don't want the Note 8! I'm thinking the V20 over the V30 for a few reasons. I love the top screen always on thing. I also love the square screen... vs rounded corners??? Also, the Samsung infinity screen is gimmicky and pretty pointless. Also, the aspect ratio is weird: tall and narrow???
FWIW, I'm a Verizon customer, so my choice in phones is more limited... but when my phone boot-loops or my contract is up, I'm leaning towards a V20... my wife is definitely not enthralled with her Note 8... Or hopefully, in the next four months, something excitingly usable will come up...
V30 is quite an improvement over the V20, the new bezel less body, makes the hand position far better than the V20 imo
But if you prefer the the removeable battery, gotta go V20
The Note 8 has the better screen (personal choice), and camera but the audio output is subpar.
Do you want ever want to root ( maybe not if you are on Verizon I guess)
Do you need and use the spen? It's an awesome add on, but only if you are going to use it, necessitating the jump in $$$ to Samsung
I have h918 model and I'm inclined to switch because there is no removable battery on the V30 or note 8 and I have a zerolemon battery that definitely is rare these days. and with megarom +xposed this phone is a beast. I would just stick with the note 8 since you already have it but this years flag ships we're a let down. Imo
I have both. I would not return the Note 8 for a V20.
The only thing better about the V20 is the quad DAC and removable battery, but that alone is not enough to go with a far lesser device. The Note 8 is far smoother and more responsive. Battery life on the V20 is sub-par (and that's an understatement). Sure The V20 has a removable battery, but I'd need three to get the battery life I get from my Note 8.
Why do you feel buyers remorse?

Is this sub-par ? I know I've heard the note 8 getting 7hrs+ but I didn't think this phone was sub-par in terms of battery.

Only because I was trying to keep cost to a minimum. The only thing that I really don't like about the note 8, so far, is the long display. I prefer the wider like the earlier gens of note.

If cost is the most important factor the V20 is the obvious choice (if they have it available). Only you knows you situation and can decide that. The Note 8 is an overall superior device though. My be consider something like a G6, it's price has dropped considerable amount and would be a cheaper option on a good device though with the older Snapdragon 821 processor). The V30 is also a nice device, but also more expensive and nearly as much as the Note 8.
When I sent my Note 8 for service to fix the wireless charging I went back to my V20, and noticed the difference.
Also I Note 8 is every so slightly taller than the V20. The V20 is quite tall and wide in comparison. See pic. I wsan't sure how I'd like the new display aspect ratio, but I really like it. I find the phone easier to hold and am far less likely to drop it.

Then I would get a V20. It's hard to find rooted V20's on the used market as most people mistakenly updated to 10q. So be careful, might have to pay a premium for a rooted device.
The Note 8 has the far better screen, the 835 (vs 820) does improve fluidity/game play and battery life. I would NOT get a Tmo Note 8, as the only way to root it, cuts battery life to 80% and no custom roms.
If you go Note 8 gotta go intl version and make sure you have one that oem unlock is available insettings (BIG hassle). But that means you gotta drop $900 cash. OUCH.
If you must go tmo for wifi calling and VOLTE, it's better to spend that $900 for the V30 imo. Doubt you'll ever have root though.
Best best is the G955F s8 plus, for custom ROMs, better screen/processor. I personally hate the form factor though. The sound is average, so you lose that. But you can always just get a dragonfly red and USB dongle for audio, or something larger like a oppo HA-2SE. But who wants to carry two devices...argh

Hell off a review. Thanks man.
I prefer the V20 for the flat 16/9 screen. I also use the ir blaster all the time.
If you prefer curved screen with skinny 2/1 ratio Note 8 is a much better device.
