Weird battery drain - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There was almost 50% battery remained before I went to sleep last night. This morning it was powered off when I get up. I wonder where the battery power has gone

try a full cycle, from 0 to 100% with a 0.5amps charger. it will take 4 hours or so, but it will be great for your battery health

Is there any prove shows that the rapid charger will harm battery health and reduce the battery life? It is a vicious cycle.

Look, your phone is constantly awake. The doze mode does not kick in. Make sure which app(s) is/are keeping your phone awake and do(es) not allow it to go to sleep.

Since some day's (2 or 3) I have the same problem. Maybe a bad update ?

Maybe a bad battery like dozens of others? Check your battery capacity (health) with Accubattery. The attachment shows a shutdown at 50%. Normal behavior is a near horizontal line when the phone is not being used.

The weird part is that 50% power is gone after automatically shutdown.

Never the less, my 6P shutdown itself several time sine last one or two updates with almost full power or with the AC charger on. It never happened before.

I am in China and thanks a lot to our Great Firewall, maybe it is the reason that my phone is constantly awake. But normally, it will consume 10% of the power during the whole night. The discharge curve is almost a line with a -15 slope.

Your geographic location has nothing to do with it, and when the battery is healthy a normal drain is between 0.2 and 0.4%/h. This means that overnight you should expect a drain of 3-4% after 9 hours. If your phone continues to shut down by itself I'd say your battery is the culprit... especially if upon boot it shows a different percentage than when it shut down. Check your battery health first, and if it is OK ( say >85-90%), then install a battery drain app to find any wakelock, process or app keeping your phone awake. BBS or GSam are two.

Me too
It happens to me too.
Today my phone switched off when it was near 30%.
This behavior started with the last update to Android 7.1.2 .
I'm subscribed to beta program and until final version it never happened.

Agreed- and also why the battery is suspect. You neglected to show your Health tab which is where the estimated capacity is. No need to post another attachment, just tell us what the capacity is. If your phone keeps shutting down and dropping to zero, I would replace the battery anyway. Lucky for you the part is made in China and easy to obtain.

The capacity in Health tab is > 80%. The problem in China is we have too many batteries which claim to be original part, the price vary from several US dollars to 20 dollars. I bought a 5 dollars one and replaced the old one the week before last week, it is not easy. Now the capacity is almost 101%, the duration is longer than the old one, 10 -15% percent max.
And there was one time it shutdown itself several days after the replacement.

Not needed. From the pic he attached it's obvious the phone was in standby most of the time.
Man, you even use ya phone?
What is with this obsession of battery life goin on 'round here? I say, as long as you can get better battery life than a stock rom, you've won. Keeping the phone on for a day or two without charging seems like a good idea, but everyday isn't the same, and one day you may need to use it way more than any other day..if you start that day off with only 30% just because you wanted to see how long your battery would last, then you really gotta limit how often you use your phone just so that it can make it till the next time your around a charger.

The battery needs to be charged? I bought my phone back in June. The battery is now at 70%. I figured I just had to buy a new one when this one runs out.
Barely used phone. Come on.
Display 4%? Is that possible?
I can go a full day and a half, 36 hours, without a charge and I am using the original sense android... and I use my phone normally, I text, read usatoday, tmz, check email a few times, use the xda app... and I have wifi on all the time! What's this beef with battery life on these forums? Mine lasts forever! I just have things update manually, I don't let anything run without my permission.
I do, however, turn my phone off the 6 hours I am sleeping.
wifi is on = low battery usage, atleast in my experience.
Indeed. I got 1 day and 19 hours on stock nonrooted 2.2 back. and i used it for some medium texting. and some gps applications...maybe 2-3 hours max awake time. i dont think you used it much...the excessive 3G usage from FB doesnt mean anything.

You should be able to get what you're looking for from the Spare Parts app.
According to my calculation thats is 69min of display usage.

According to mine, it's 122 min of screen on usage.
I had this scenario on my phone running myn's rls2 + king cfs #11 yesterday:
since unplugged - 24 hours
display on - 1 hour 25 minutes
charge remaining - 50%.
so i wanted to find out how long the battery would last on standby, and to my surprise.. it turned out to be nearly 58 hrs!!! that was on stock sense rom. non-rooted. and of course with very very minimal use. i basically just left the phone alone on my desk or in my pocket all day.
here is the screenshot i took back in july:
but that kind of battery life is unrealistic with normal usage. I am a moderate user (on the higher side), and i typically put my evo on charge everyday in the morning when i get to work (on weekdays). so, the charge on my phone lasts about 25 hrs with normal usage, that usually means about 4-5hrs of Awake Time. this is after rooting the phone. and i am using a stock rooted sense rom. i have had similar results before rooting the phone as well.
on weekends, i find myself charging the phone about 3 times (over 2 days), as the usage of the phone goes very very high.
i have a charger on my desk at work for the weekday charging, and a charger in my car for the weekends.
i have recently installed setCPU, and havent really seen that making too much of a difference, but that perhaps has to do with my usage pattern.
as pointed out in many a threads, signal strength is one major factor when it comes to battery drain. i live in Atlanta and i have great Sprint coverage where I am located, and that makes a world of difference.

it would help if you indicate the battery life that you were getting on stock or any other rom you were using prior to this. because there are so many variables that come into play as far as battery life is concerned. so that will help put your claim into some perspective

Bad battery?

Today I went to use the GPS on my phone and it lasted about 2 min battery still showed at 60% but phone just keeps turning off. When you turn it back on sometimes it shows 50-60% sometimes 1-2% I turned my phone off and let it charge for 4 hours same thing after just a few min on GPS and I can't take a picture with flash at all when it is acting up. The only reason I'm not sure if the battery is the problem is issue looks to be hit and miss right now my phone is taking pictures with flash just fine on battery but I'm not sure how long it will last. My battery is over a year old so I feel that it may be the problem. Has anyone had this problem I don't want to get a new battery just to find out something else is wrong with the phone.
Let me guess:
Two possibilities.
A) gps cable is not plugged correctly so that it might cause an electric jam with other components?
B) a heavy rom sided crash when turning on the gps?

Well it is not just the GPS but I have not checked the cable. I'm not in a place that I can feel ok taking the phone apart. The phone turns off when using the camera flash sometimes so I'm 98% sure it is just the battery that has gone bad. I'm waiting for my new battery in the mail and will update. As of right now I can use the phone and GPS but I can't expect to get more then 5min out of it. I was just shocked at how it stopped working overnight.
Well you can try out with the new battery. It is at least safer than opening the phone. Let s put the openphone stuff into the worst case.
Sent from my Black Ice'd Glacier using XDA App
OK so I got my new batteries in from HERE and everything is working right again. The new batteries are both 1700mah and the battery dock/usb charger is great. I still need to cycle both batteries a few times but so far under super load (gps,4g,games,wifi,flashlight, camera all at once for 30+ min) I have not put more then a 30% drain on them.
On the the next question I do feel that my stock battery should have lasted me longer (lasted less then 6 months). That and my problems started out of the blue with no real warning or loss of charge time. I was doing some reading about Lithium-Ion batteries and I'm now sure my nonstop ROM flashing and some of the "safe" overcharge tweaks caused this problem. After every ROM flash I would calibrate my battery by charging over night deleting the bin and then letting the phone die to the point I could not get it to turn on. Come to find out this is VERY BAD for Lithium-Ion batteries. The next thing i did was use the overcharge again VERY BAD because it can lead to build up inside the battery. In fact to get max life out of a Lithium-Ion it should only be charged to around 80%.
Lesson learned only flash ROM's at 100% battery so you have no need to do a battery cal, and never use a overcharge "tweak" unless you want to spend some money / time without your phone as you wait for a new battery. Missed some great pictures of my kids this weekend happy to have the extra battery now.
Take the battery out and look at it's profile. If it seems a bit swollen, replace it. I had a battery that would say like 60% and then seconds later my phone would shut down. Turns out my battery was kaput and had 'popped'. I picked up a used OEM one and a couple cheap ones off ebay. The OEM one, is where it's at. The others were crap even though they claimed 1800 mAh

My battery is 18 months old. I am thinking the reboots are due to the battery. I charge it all night... 100%.. 30 minutes later it reboots at 1% battery. So I will be buying a new battery soon.

Once we get charged up (and back down), let's see how the battery life in the S4 compares to the quad core.
Please make sure to include your screen on time, as that is the best indicator of light/heavy use.
pleasantly surprised
I can't believe how good the battery has been so far, 84% after 13hours (over night)
I am a light user. still - that is impressive for stock. I never got close to that with my OG Epic on stock which was usually 3% per hour.

Not too bad for first day with moderate to heavy use!
This is heavy usage. Screen on time of 3.5 hours. Downloading Max Payne and a lot of apps. Downloading and listening to audio on Google chrome. Lots of Pulse usage. Games, YouTube, and 30 minutes of phone calls.
*edit* Bluetooth and wifi on all day long.

one thing im NOT noticing here is Allshare Service taking up a high percentage in your guys battery stats...
on mine its been at 7-9% and i dont know why, i have something waking up my phone when the screen is off and it might be that... ive forced stop, but i check later and its active again, ive disabled the service and the Allshare play in the application manager but still comes back on... hmmm i think im gonna have to root and just get rid of that file, or freeze it or something
Question... Does having all the motion settings on effect the battery? Also does having the NFC and sbeam on hurt the battery?

I wish I could get some stats like that. The screenshots are while I was sleeping and 7% seems like a lot of drain for it just sitting there. Only thing on was wifi. Cell standby time on is always the same as the time on battery, is that normal?
edit: the phone now shows 79% battery left with time on battery of 12h 46m; cell standby the exact same; screen on at 9% with time on of 48m. I'm fully stock and running power save mode.
Here are my stats. I think the battery life isn't too bad so far but we will see.

No, they will carry over until you re-charge or change the battery.
I was going to make a thread like this, but it was already here! Here are my results after my second full charge and regular usage. The results are on par with my fully modified and decked out Epic. Of course, this device has a bigger battery, but it also has a larger screen. Between the hardware and software upgrades, I'm very impressed with the stock battery life. This includes wifi on at all times as well as signal w/data. Some motion features are enabled, nfc is not, and google sync is off (I use stock email). Now how much further can this be improved?? Remember not to be discouraged, Screen On times will vary depending on what the phone is used for. Showing pictures is much less battery intensive than watching YouTube videos.

cell standby usage

Is anyone else having high cell standby usage? My phone has been off of the charger for about 3.5 hours. I haven't made any calls or used it for any music or anything. The battery is now at 72% with the biggest user of battery being "cell standby". I have all of the power saving features turned on. I googled it and saw that some of the international s3s are having the same or a similar issue. In their instance, it was an issue with the radio.
ideas?
Have you rooted it or anything? Mine has been getting excellent battery life with moderate use. Took it off charge yesterday around 10am checked the tropical storm throughout the day and other stuff, by 9pm it was still around 70%

I've seen other folks complain about this. In my case, I have more time off than on, and would expect standby to be a higher percentage than other things...based on my current usage. (Been trying to see how long battery lasts with screen off. Looking pretty good so far. Can see results here).
I'm not rooted. The only reason I bring up "cell standby" is that it is the only thing that is high. A phone shouldn't drain 10% per hour while it is just sitting there. It's 11:30AM now and my phone has been off the charger since about 6:30. Now I'm at 50% battery.
I did read in some other posts that it may be related to LTE being rolled out. From what I can tell, the nashville area just got LTE within the past couple of weeks. I could be flipflopping between HPSA and LTE.

Lucky you, I have to go to NYC or Philly for LTE. There's a post on GottabeMobile with a simple working fix works on rooted and non-rooted phones: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/0...how-disable-4g-lte-use-hspa-conserve-battery/
fyi, i think i may have fixed my problem. I reset the phone to stock and then let it reinstall all of my apps. I have all of the same apps as before, but the battery life seems better. I did this at around 5 yesterday and only drained off 5% or so of the battery between 6 and 10PM. Today I've been off of the charger for an hour and am still at 97%. I will periodically check it during the day.

Interesting.
I'm not really sure what to think about the Cell Standby thing. I've seen quite a few complaints about it. Thinking of your comments on battery life, take my battery usage per my post here. You'll notice that the time while on battery is 1 day, 8 hours, 25 min., and still had 35% left. Cell standby is 45%.
Of note about that is that I had the phone on approximately an hour and half. My test was for battery time basically in standby. I think the length of time ie excellent. Yet several have pointed out the 'high' cell standby. My thought is that if not using the phone, that will be the main thing happeninng, so logically will be a higher percentage of battery use.
Regarding battery use, I am not finding that I get that great of a time when I have the screen on a lot.
In the end if DEVS do something to bring down that cell standby time, it can only be good
I've had a similar thing happen to me yesterday where my battery drained 40% in like 3 hours with 'Cell Stand By" at the top. I ended up rebooting my phone and everything was fine since then.
Yes, my battery life has been terrible.
I had tried out a Lumia 900 and was getting much better battery life. I live in an LTE area.

i'm still at 87% after about 6 hours off of the charger.... with the same usage pattern as yesterday. I don't know if the reboot or the wiping of the phone fixed the problem.
I have been getting great battery life. On my first charge after I got the phone I went 1 day and 15 hours and still had like 10% left. I just put it on the charger a little bit ago and had gone 1 day and 12 hours again and had 30% charge left.
I have brightness at about 55% and power saving on except I have the CPU set to full power instead of limiting it.
It looks as the problem has been found on the international version. Maybe it can be implemented here in the states version

mine has been good since i wiped the phone and started over. I listened to pandora from around noon until 4:30 yesterday. i had around 60% battery when i plugged my phone in to charge at 10:30 last night.
I would beleive we have the same issue as my standby is high but i get great battery life so it didnt make sense...now it does...no big deal just know tjat what your seeing for cell standby is incorrect.....good find
I get two full days of use before I need to recharge. I dont turn the phone off over night and I have power saving off. Beats my x10 hands down

I'm not 100% convinced that cell stand by is a battery draining culprit. my cell standby is 50% after 1hour since unplugged and my phone just went to 98% just now so I am not seeing a HUGE battery drain because of it.. i think its probably a rogue app that is causing a wake lock. For those of you that is seeing unreal batter drains have you installed betterbatterystats to see if you can pinpoint the drain?
Ok my issue also went away.
When I signed in to my Google account, it installed all of my apps from my craptivate. Today I want through and deleted the ones I never use and now my battery is lasting almost twice as long.

You don't have drain. Your screen needs power to work.

When your phone spends 40% battery life in 3 hours, you do have a drain, specially when the screen was on only 1 hour out of those 3.
Maybe you are used to having terrible battery life, but my phone's battery life used to be 24h at the minimun even if I used it a lot, I don't know what's gone wrong. I woke up today and my phone was dead. The battery lasted 10 hours and 23 minutes.

You are really confusing things. The 24 hours you are talking about is standby time.
65% of the 40% comes from your screen. Your screen on time is 1 hour and 25 minutes. That means you will get something between 3-4 hours screen on time total. That's perfectly normal.
Maybe I am mistaken and you got drain, but not based on those screenshots you show.

Sorry, but that's not normal, not for me. I've had up to 6-7 hours screen time on.
Like I said, maybe you are used to this kind of battery life, but I've had my battery life last 36h with little use and 24h with several hours of screen time. Why does it only last 10 hours now with just 2h of screen time on? thats what I want to know.
I remember I used to charge my phone once a day, and I used it as much as I do now. Will post more screenshots later today right before my phone dies.

6-7 hours is impossible to achieve when using your phone normally. But lets leave that discussion for now.
The screenshots you gave:
It drained 42% battery.
65% of the 42% battery is caused by the screen. That's 0,65*0,42=27,3% of the total power consumption.
That leaves us with 42%-27,3%=14,7% other drain in 3 hours. You had your phone in use (screen on) about 1:30h. So the drop in battery is really not uncommon. In my experience that's normal. I even see that you used a videoplayer.
If you are sure that you have drain, then try to compare the screen on time with the awake time. If your phone is more awake then your screen is on (a significant difference), then it's possible you have drain.
Lennyz is right. This is completely normal use on a stock battery. I literally wrote the thread on great battery life. (See signature). I get 4 days standby time routinely. So I am confident in saying that this battery life is normal. But no matter what, you can't push past 4 hours of screen on time. The battery isn't a little sustained cold fusion reactor or something.
Now, if you have an extended battery then something is wrong. My first guess would be that your extended battery is dying.

I understand what you're saying. But I'm telling you I used to have much greater battery life. My phone used to last 24h at the least and I use it as much as I did then (not too long ago). But if you think this is normal then I guess you can't help me, thanks anyway.
I went to sleep right after taking this screenshot (Phone was dead when I woke up 7 hours later). So yeah, thats the screentime on I get now, doesn't even reach 3 hours.

You need to look at the awake time and compare it with the screen on time. That way you can check if you got wakelocks. You need to press the graph to see it. eg in your last screenshot press the area that says 8h6m57s.
Post it here.
