One is a proximity sensor (turns off the screen when it's up against your face during a call) and the other is a light sensor (for the backlight's auto-dimming function)
its how the gov't is tracking you.
actually i'm glad as all the other phones get front face cameras i won't have one, no one needs to see my ugly mug.

Actually with any luck front cameras will prevent many people from getting together in the first place
dont think its coming to this country but the rest of the world uses it, at one point last year we were headed in that direction but the minmo7 devices turned it down unless the companies are still waitin to unleash the devices but the network can handel the data

If you want to get real technical about it, one of the holes is a light sensor that is sensitive to daylight for backlight brightness control and IR for proximity sensing, the other hole is an IR led that turns on during a phone call. When you hold the phone next to your face the IR led bounces off your skin and back into the 1st hole telling the HD2 that you have it near your face.
Try this, initiate a cell call on the HD2, then hold a video camera over those 2 holes. you'll see the IR LED lit up. It only lights during a cell call. Even better if you have a sony camcorder with nightshot mode activated, though just about every CCD/CMOS sensor is sensitive enough to IR even with the internal IR filter in place that you should be able to see it
Im going to take a guess that the IR led isn't just constantly lit, but likely pulse width modulated to some frequency the HD2 recognizes that way the light sensor can tell the difference between the IR bounce back and ambient light. I couldn't tell with my camera that it was PWM, but it could quite likely be at a frequency greater than 30hz, which you wouldn't be able to see on a standard video camera at 30fps. you'd need a high speed camera, or another IR sensitive photo diode attached to an oscilloscope.

I think you're looking at the notification led on the far left of the earpiece speaker grille. I highly doubt you can see the IR LED with your naked eyes. Were talking about the two dots under the glass just to the left of that.

That sensor is not a front camera. its a photodiode http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photodiode i guess you could call it a 1 pixel camera lol

Believe me i can tell if it is an LED otherwise I wouldn't be doing my masters in electronics
and to answer your question, it definitely not the notification LED or the light bleeding from it into the adjacent space. when a call is in progress and it is very dark around, you can just make out the faint blinking.

I also have O2Compass, but I didn't know that the app includes more features then just the compass - it has also metal detector, spirit level and light sensor.
All of them work except light sensor, it always show 0.

The metal detector is a trick from compass.
For the light sensor, check in your settings if you did not set the screen light to a manual value.
You're right, I did have screen brightness to manual, however I did set it to Automatic, but still the light sensor shows 0 lux, I tried to use *#0*# Light Sensor Test, but it shows light presence.
I am doing a project analyzing sensors. I am trying to make an experiment using the proximity sensors. I have managed to utilize apps of the market to find out some things.
I am using a Photon 4g. The sensor is ISL29030
The sensor has a resolution of 100cm, meaning it can detect things 100cm away. But it only has 2 settings. 3 cm and 100cm, but nothing in-between.
If there anyway i can obtain the raw sensor data? I need the in between stuff.
For example the ambient light sensor. It has a resolution of about 27,000 sci. I am able to get all the in-between stuff. but not for the proximity sensors.
Is there a way to modify the driver to get the desired information?
Honor 5X has the following sensors.
Accelerometer- For auto rotate feature, the accelerometer is one of the most common sensors one can find in a smartphone. It checks and analyze if a phone is ideal or is in motion. It calculates the orientation of your smartphone along 3 axes. Information gathered from Accelerometer is used by apps or OS to switch the orientation of the screen between portrait or landscape as per your movement. Proximity sensor radiates a beam of infrared light which gets reflected from the nearby object and this reflection is registered by IR scanner. Ever noticed how your screen goes off when you are on a call and your phone is near to your ears? Because of this sensor so that it allows you to have an uninterrupted calling experience because screen is off and you don’t need to bother about call getting disconnected accidentally.
Digital Compass or Magnetometer- ever ran into situation at unknown/new location and want to know the direction? As the name implies Magnetometer is used to sense Magnet fields and provide information defining your phone’s orientation with respect to it. All compass apps use Magnetometer sensor to detect your physical direction on the map. Due to this very reason our digital map rotates automatically in the same direction when we take a turn while driving.

Sadly it does not have Gyroscope So can't do VR related things and games like Pokemon Go
While drunkerly taking photos in Snapchat and watching TV at my friend's, we discovered that my flash was setting off the volyne controls, whyyyyy
TV remotes emit IR light. TV and other electronics receive IR light. The flash pattern translates to the commands.
Perhaps the flash is also emitting IR light. Or more likely the laser auto focus is emitting IR light.
