Change carrier name from "Home" to actual carrier??? - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Hi,
Currently on InvictaOS (4/20 release). I know there are settings that allow me to change the carrier name to whatever I like (on status bar and lockscreen), but when an actual call is made or received, the phone still says "(XXX) XXX-XXXX via Home".
I've searched everywhere for the answer but can't find anything that will change the carrier name globally.
I used my current sim in my old S4 and it correctly displayed AT&T while on KK...however, I noticed the same Home issue when I installed a LP ROM. FWIW, I also received the Home carrier label when I was on stock MM. Is this a "feature" that was introduced with LP? If so, I don't like it.
Anyway, just me being picky. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks!

Just a thought - under Settings > SIM cards, if you tap on your SIM card (e.g. in slot 1) are you able to edit the SIM name there (by tapping on SIM name), and does that then change 'Home' to whatever you typed when you call?

I do not have the Sim Card settings that you speak of. I have the XT1625 (non plus version), so I don't know if I don't have those settings because it's a single sim phone or if the ROM doesn't have those settings. But thanks for the reply!

Hmm, that's odd - I'd have thought the SIM card settings would be there regardless of whether it's single or dual SIM... Just asking, what's your device's baseband on Invicta (under Settings > About Phone)? Was this a clean flash of Invicta with BeanGapps or another GApps?
With a clean flash of Invicta 2.0 (20/04 build, BeanGapps mini), I'd have expected that SIM card settings would be visible on the top level of Settings (as in the screenshot), then you'd be able to edit the SIM name (in the screenshot, I've renamed my SIM from 3 to 3 UK), which shows up when you call from that SIM. However, this is on a XT1642 (G4 Plus), so maybe some other XT1625 or G4 users can chime in that are running Invicta too!
You may wish to try clean flashing the 09/05 Invicta build, see if you have any more luck with that one. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72222658&postcount=3844

I clean flashed the 4/20 Invicta build with the recommended 7.1.2 slim micro gapps...but I've faced this issue on every MM & Nougat ROM I've tried.
My baseband is M8952_70009.08.03.45R. Never flashed anything special since all the recommended flashes for Nougat were for fingerprint usability- since I don't have a FP button it was/is a moot point.
I've considered upgrading to the 5/09 build but I have my phone set up how I like it. I don't like to re-do everything every time a new build comes out.
The 'Home" issue is just a minor annoyance. If I can tweak it - cool. If not, not big deal.

please help upgrade hw6925

Hi XDA Gurus
I have an hw6925. It was unlocked by entering a code.
On the page for selecting my network I see a single button "Find Network". It gives no control to select a network by hand or to set a preferred network. I basically have only the top button of the three you can see in the attachment below.
In theory I should have those options... I have a hw6940 with those options and even the ATT/Cingular website for this model shows that I should have those options. (see http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/main.jsp?t=solutionTab&ps=solutionPanels&solutionId=54869).
The phone is also unable to detect that it is roaming. (The roaming triangle symbol never appears when I am roaming, and the activesync roaming schedule is never used.)
It is not clear to me why I am missing these options but I believe it may be because the firmware is not the last version. The Asset Viewer shows that the ROM is 1.30CIN.03ENG (bootloader G.39) and the Radio firmware is 1.02.00. My hw6940 shows firmware 1.48NA.00ENG (Bootloader G.39) and Radio firmware 1.08.00.
I really need to have these options so I am trying to understand how to upgrade my phone. There is no newer firmware for this model offered on neither the HP nor the ATT/Cingular sites. The HP site has the upgrade for both the main and radio firmware, but will not allow me to flash those to my hw6925.
I'm pretty technical but I dont have much experience with these HTC devices.
So, my questions:
1. Does anybody know a simple reason why I dont have the network functions in my hw6925? Is it because of the radio firmware? or the general firmware? or something else?
2. Assuming it is the firmware, any idea how I can upgrade it? Do you think it is possible to use something like HPRUU.EXE to read the radio firmware from my hw6540 and then load it onto the hw6925? Or am I likely to brick it that way? (Can I backup my hw6925 firmware, try it, and if it fails then reload the hw6925 firmware?)
3. Any other ideas how to convert it to a generic hw6945?
Your help is really appreciated!
Thanks
Ron
if anybody else finds this and needs to solve this problem too, I have found a solution.
indeed the issue is not with the ROMs.
there is some feature used by cingular to disable these features, and it is controlled somehow by the SIM card. you can see discussion of this in these two threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=284201
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=266794
The solution is to edit the registry under HKLM\Security\Phone\, and set these values:
L: 0
ManualDisable: 1
PreferredDisable: 1
All three should be set to 0. (In my case I did not have a PreferredDisable at all, I added the DWORD entry just to be sure).
In the threads listed some people complained that these values were reset to 1 during reboot. In my case (with no cingular SIM, since my unit is unlocked) I did not have this problem.
Hope this will save somebody else a few hours of searching...

[GUIDE] unlock APN settings on stock firmware

if you have a problematic firmware that won't allow you to edit your APN settings in the dialer hidden menu, this may be what you need.
first, the warnings:
1. THIS IS ONLY FOR SPRINT SAMSUNG PHONES RUNNING TOUCHWIZ ROMS!!! never attempt on any other carrier or manufacturer's device or alternate roms! it should most likely work on other Samsung Sprint devices with stock/touchwiz roms.
2. DEPENDING ON DEVICE, YOU ARE MOST LIKELY TO BE FORCED TO FACTORY RESET YOUR DEVICE IN THE PROCESS, which likely includes LOSS OF ALL DATA ON INTERNAL SD!! take all necessary precautions.
3. ROOT REQUIRED
4. you will STILL NEED your MSL number!!!
5. have a FULL backup in TWRP ready in case anything goes wrong. INCLUDE your EFS in the backup!!! again, INCLUDE YOUR EFS. make sure it's stored on EXTERNAL sd card. again, EXTERNAL SD CARD!!! or copy it to your PC if you don't have an external card.
here's the short but sweet guide.
1. download "Samsung Phone Info" from Google Play
2. swipe over to the CSC section.
here you should see:
Firmware's CSC Code
Active CSC Code
Available CSC Code
3. if Firmware's AND Active both say XAS, you should already be able to edit your APNs using your MSL number.
if Firmware and Active codes do not match, you have a dirty rom and I am unable to help you correct it, you'd best try a different stock based rom or 3rd party that allows it by default.
if Available CSC Codes does NOT include "XAS" then whoever modified the customized stock touchwiz rom you're using removed it and you'd best try a different stock based rom or 3rd party that allows it by default.
4. using any CSC editor, change "SPR" in ALL places it appears as only the 3 letters "SPR" to XAS
5. confirm changes and reboot. you will now most likely lose ALL personal data on your phone and should now be able to edit your APN using your MSL inside the dialer's hidden menu.

Have you found a way to retrieve your MSL without calling sprint? I've tried all the tool apps in the play store and using a logcat within the ##3282# menu with no luck. Getprop ril.MSL yields nothing, not even a not found error.
I've tried calling sprint for my MSL but refuse to release it.. I'm not exactly on their "nice" list - they've even called to tell me I'm "using too much of my [UNLIMITED] data" many times so I don't expect much from them anymore..
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated
try the Sprint chat -- through the website, NOT Facebook, and have a good reason ready as to why you need the MSL, other than for bypassing their security lol
Holy **** after searching high and low I have FINALLy found a way to get back editing my APNS for hotspot on my rooted Sprint Note 5! AND I keep Android Pay! Thanks so much!!
This works perfectly! Only thing is turn on hotspot option disappeared from settings. I can turn it on and off from the top bar if I swipe down. OR I can download a hotspot shortcut app and access it from that app.
Also I noticed my icons for LTE now say 4G and the bars are different too - more old school.
I noticed I changed EVERY SPR to XAS - do ALL of them NEED to be changed to enable APN editing? Can I switch back the ones that give me back hotspot option in settings and stock LTE & bars icons?

this **might** be fixed by renaming (or deleting, if you're brave) the features.xml file, if I remember correctly, stored in system/csc/ or system/etc/ not sure honestly
features.xml.backup should do just fine.
if the rom doesn't boot afterwards or if the dragons catch all your apps on fire, go back to recovery and use TWRP's file manager to change it back
also, any xposed app (like wanam's) or other feature.xml adjusting apps (like GalaxyTools or Samsung Phone Info) can cause the problem to happen again.
the alternative / temporary / dirty-fix would be to create a shortcut to hotspot on your home screen:
1. download Activity Launcher from Google Play
2. launch and change recent activities to all activities
3. wait approximately 72 years for it to load
4. scroll to Settings and tap it
5. scroll to Hotspot and long-press it
6. tap create shortcut
7. never uninstall Activity Launcher -- instead just make it a hidden app (it's very small anyways)
I can just longpress hotspot toggle in slide down drawer from top no probz. Which CSC settings modifies the ability to edit APN? I want to put the rest back to SPR.
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk
I used the msl code and everything appears the way you say it should... but the phone STILL says invalid sim!
What internal file must be deleted, the thing is unlocked on sprints end it just wont let go !

I'm sorry i might have been mistaken... But i tried for like 30 minutes but was unable to place a call.
How long have you been using this rom? How's the performance, battery life etc.? Are there any other bugs we should be aware of?

I am now with EMUI because I could not flash xposed on MIUI8 now.(I could use phone without xposed:silly
But other Chinese users said that these bugs will not influence your daily use.
Wow, this is like a dream come true. Do you think this ROM will be updated to fix the bugs (especially random reboots)? I'm looking forward to use it but I would prefer if there was a little bit more stable version for daily usage. Oh and by the way, what happened? Custom ROM based on Android 6.0 for Honor 6? Did Huawei finally release ALL the sources?
As for the SIM icon - I read on his blog that this problem happens only for the Sim Card #1. I think (but I'm not sure) than in MIUI you can actually mark SIM cards as #1 or #2 in settings. Maybe this bug could be "fixed" by simply changing the settings and marking SIM card as #2?

right now, nothing is a big issue, other than signal display.. unless it's perfectly usable.. and signal issues are quite common in miui ports.. honor 5x had it too. but solved eventually

6.12.12 is the first built for Honor 6. Since Ry09iu has been made so many ROMs for H60, like FIUI, Mokee, Flyme4, Flyme5, MIUI6,MIUI7, IUNI OS, BaiduOS, Tencent TOS, and so on!
So I think He will not give up ..
The way to build MIUI8 for honor 6 is that MIUI has put out patchrom, which help developers to make roms easily.
(So it is possible to make a CM13.0(Well, now called Lineage OS) on the same way, But no one did it...)
As for the SIM icon...Well, some Honor 6 supports TWO SIM CARDS.
Thanks for your answers. I installed it right now (on top of official B860 with TWRP 3.0.2). Unfortunately I seem to have a problem with my IMEI and Baseband. Every few seconds pop-up window appears, telling me that my Device ID is unknown and it couldn't find IMEI, therefore some Mi Account options like MiCloud will be unavailable. In my Settings > About Phone it says that Baseband is also "Unknown". I'm doing another Wipe Data / Factory Reset and we'll see how it goes. Other than that the ROM seems to work OK, however there are some chinese apps.
EDIT
Nope, it's even worse now. After doing a wipe in TWRP, phone boots up and shows the starting configuration screen. I choose language, press Next and it shows up the message that there is no SIM card. I press "Skip" and phone instantly reboots. It's the same every time.
EDIT2
OK, I figured what was the problem at the first time - I flashed OpenGAPPS just after I flashed MIUI, which was not a good idea, I guess, and caused the issue described above. I formatted everything in TWRP and reinstalled MIUI only (no GAPPS). System started and had the original MIUI configuration (before it was different, probably due to the openGapps). There are, however, some bugs.
First of all, the configuration can't be finished in my language (Polish). At the step where you can choose to enable or disable "Find my phone" option it would just kind of hang (you can't finish that step). When I pressed "Next" it would just slide back to the same screen over and over again. I couldn't get past that step. However when I switched the language to English in first step, the configuration went fine. So if you have troubles and you use other language than Chinese / English, then I recommend you finish the first-time setup in English and later on switch the language to the desired one in the settings.
Problem with SIM card is quite annoying. Device doesn't recognize SIM card (even though it might actually work) and the icon is flashing all the time at the status bar. Because of that Mobile Data switch doesn't work. By default Mobile Data is enabled all the time and you can't turn it off with the switch nor with the settings (settings crash when you try to go to anything SIM related). The only way to switch on/off mobile data is by connecting the device with USB cable and using ADB commands:
adb shell
svc data disable <- disables Mobile Data
adb shell
svc data enable <- enables Mobile Data
There's also plenty of chinese apps (some chinese store + chinese VOD). The browser also has some chinese texts + some options have chinese left-overs (Mi Account Settings). The performance itself is quite good and it's a good start. However for daily usage it, in my opinion, needs a bit more polishing. Would be nice if we had someone here that could make a port for Western countries like the modified KangVIP (removing chinese apps, repairing western languages and so on). Unfortunately I don't have that kind of skill so the only thing that I can do is to report bugs I noticed

THANKS FOR YOUR TEST!!!
I will try to report bugs you found to Ry09iu
(if He will listen to me. Some developers In China did not like answer users' questions because there are too many users trying to report their questions.)
In My test, I flash OpenGApps at the same time and it can start Into system. So I think it is not a bug or just OpenGApps's bug.

(if He will listen to me. Some developers In China did not like answer users' questions because there are too many users trying to report their questions.)
In My test, I flash OpenGApps at the same time and it can start Into system. So I think it is not a bug or just OpenGApps's bug.

Yeah, I normally do that on other phones too. I can flash CM13 and then flash OpenGapps just after that and it works perfectly fine. However for some reason it didn't work too good on my Honor 6 with this MIUI ROM (I'm using H60-L04 btw). Maybe there was some error during installation, hard to say. However whenever I started my phone it would show up "No SIM Card" screen immedietaly on top of MIUI Configuration. When I pressed "Skip" my phone automatically restarted. Weird - that probably would fix itself automatically after SIM Card bug is fixed in MIUI.

how to activate dual-sim?

HELLO,
I was given a Psmart model FIG-lx1c109 (orange) simple-sim. (on the original box only one number imei).
Good
I got the bootloader code.
I installed oeminfo dual-sim FIG-lx1c432.
the device has become fig-lx1c432b176. it shows me sim1 correctly and sim2 00000000000000.
the problem is that only one sim sounds, never both. If I call the other sim live on the answering machine.
all I can do is go to phone settings and switch from one sim to another.
Is this normal?
how can i fix it problem?
thank you
edit because the problem is solved, I appealed to google and he offered me https://ministryofsolutions.com/huawei-bootloader-unlock-paid-service-html.
i installed whatsapp, $ 15 from paypal, teamwiewer and i followed the instructions (do not touch the phone). I will not tell you more because I'm not sure that everything is allowed (in France or elsewhere).
Ps it's really good if you're in trouble. thank you

Oxygen OS, root, APN and the meaning of life

Hi All,
I appeal to you keepers of the knowledge to enlight me on some points I need to clarify.
The situation:
I recently bought an unbranded Oneplus 6T and I (still) use stock oxygen OS V9.0.17.
Since a couple of years I've been using a data-only plan with a VOIP SIP account as my main phone service. It was working great on my beloved almost-6-years-old Nexus 5 until I dropped it to it's death. I chose the 6T as replacement because it seemed a good option for rooting and custom ROMs.
My service provider is FIDO in Canada. They offer a very good value data-only plan (15$ CAD for 4GB), but for an UNKNOWN reason to me, with FIDO the SIP calls drop automatically if I use the default autoconfigured APN for LTE. The simple solution to that is to create a new empty APN config and fill it manually. Once done, SIP calls work like a charm (again, I don't know what causes this).
On my Nexus, I was running Android 8.0 which permitted me to modify the APN. But since Android 8.1 Google (don't be evil right) introduced the APN locking for participating providers. FIDO seems to be one of them since I cannot change any APN configuration on Oxygen OS 9.0.17. That renders my phone useless (unless I choose the 3G apn, which honestly sucks).
Now that you know a little bit about my life, here are my questions.
First thing I did:
I rooted my phone with Magisk 20.0 with the intention of modifying the /system/etc/apns-conf.xml and try changing the default FIDO APN configuration with the hope it would work.
I tried by many ways to modify it (using ADB, root browser, root explorer, solid explorer) and I couldn't change the content. Even worse, when I tried to change the permissions to the file to RW using root explorer, the file turned empty (0b) and it's still impossible to modify it (I tried editing it, deleting, replacing it, nothing works).
Question 1: The simplest of ways would be to be able to change the APN. Does anybody knows a trick (using root or not) to do that on stock OOS 9.0.17. Anybody ever tried changing apns-conf.xml?
Question 2: Did anybody succefylly edit system files onstock OOS 9.0.17 using root?
Question 2-A: Does anybody know why I break the file when I change the permission? I'd like to understand what's going on.
Another option that I am considering is using a custom ROM that disables this nonsense APN lock mechanism.
Question 3: Does anybody have a good ROM suggestion that is positively disabling this APN lock and that would allow me to change my APN with FIDO? (I was considering Lineage but I couldn't get a firm answer on the APN unlock capability).
I searched the web for many hours without success, I hope you can help me with this.
Thank you all for your insight.

Yes! I tried that many times.
So, what happens is when you have an "APN locked SIM" inserted in the device, you have no access to any edit option. No editing, no adding, nothing. You are in view mode for the APN settings (which is useless really).
In my research I found that if you insert a "not APN locked SIM" you get acces to creating a new APN (and of course editing the actual SIM APN settings).
I happen to have a SIM card (my girlfriend's) that is not APN locked on hand. I tried a couple of times creating a new APN with the FIDO settings but when I inserted back the FIDO SIM my new APN was not in the list of options.
... I should have deepened my research! I failed at that...
What I didn't realize at the time is that when you create a new APN, Android defaults the MCC and MNC parameters with the values associated with the currently inserted SIM!!! I tought it was some kind of black magic settings used by the service provider for it's network to work. But not later than TODAY (I did more research today...) I learned that: MCC = Mobile Country Code and MNC = Mobile Network Code. ****!!!
Sooooo, all I had to do is create a new APN with my girlfriend's SIM inserted and set (along with all the other settings) the MCC and MNC to the values corresponding to FIDO config (which in the past I left as is since I didn't know what they were). Save. Shut down my device. Insert FIDO SIM, reboot, and fuc**ng VOILA!!! The newly created APN is now available and... wait for it... EDITABLE!!! So if I messed-up any setting I can change it and play around with everything like we did when Google was not Evil.
So here I am with my un-activated FIDO SIM and I can confirm that my newly created APN is selectable, but I cannot try a SIP call for now since I've closed my account. Tomorrow I'll get a new subscription & SIM and update this post. But I think this part is solved.
All that being said, Question 1 is partially answered to my greatest pleasure. But I'd still like to hear your experiences about modifying sytem files on OOS with root access.
