Note5 Default Application Setting - Galaxy Note5 General

Some of you may have already figured this out but I am sure it will help some.
Every since the update to MM the "just once" or "always" choice being gone has really bothered me because I would have to clear the defaults when I wanted to change apps.
That used to be the case until I found a setting to change that.
Navigate to settings/applications/default applications then tap "default app selection" and choose "ask before setting default applications".
I am so glad I found this and I hope it helps a few people.

Changing default launcher buttons

Lets say I wanna change the icon shortcut link to Handcent instead of the default Messanger, theres gotta be a way to change it. Hopefully without rooting.
No way to change them. This feature and app menu options where removed from the epic.

I'd call that a workaround rather than a solution: I'm hoping for a solution via root or some other hack. Maybe it'll be as simple as editing a text file?
Quoted from the thread you said didn't have the solution. This might work for the other buttons as well, if you clear the defaults in said applications. That is done under the Settings > Applications, find the app and hit the "Clear Defaults" button.
Just download Handcent. When you hit the messaging icon at the bottom it will ask you if you want to use the stock app or Handcent (then you can check - remember this choice). Now whenever you hit the SMS icon (it will still appear to be the same...). It will open Handcent.

I'd call that a solution if it also changes the launcher icons to whatever application you're setting as the default. Does it work that way?

The 'Default Messenger' is not listed under Manage Applications, there is one for Handcent but that only makes it the default if you go through your contacts and select the 'text' option.
Otherwise it doesn't change the default launcher icon to open handcent and it doesn't change the logo.
Thats the one thing that is crappy with sprint is how they default their stuff and hard lock you in on it, same with the market place. They must have 3 different versions of the 'Sprint Marketplace' that has the same stuff as regular market place.
They also changed the Downloads section you click in Market to the name of 'Sprint', its like "wtf are they thinking" and it just lists a couple of average free apps under it that are already available.
This is stuff that I hope can be changed without rooting in the future, but it looks like the roms might be the saviour of this phone. SCHEIZA!!!!
It's "sprint's recommended" downloads. Yes, it's annoying, but it's better than locking you out of a ton of apps like other companies.

[Q] weird notification bar icon behaviour

In my HD2 when I try to fix my Home Layout/Main Home/Notification Bar, the SMS icon indicates message reception; but when I tap on it, it does not bring up the relevant message but opens the item "Word Mobile" ??
Any advice ???
I don't know what the heck word mobile is, but I know that you can go to Settings > Applications > Manage Apps> All > "Word Mobile" > Scroll down and "Clear Defaults" .. Next time when that icon appears and you hit it, choose messaging .
Thanks; it worked.
However I could not find Manage Apps, through your way but through the utility "CHT Editor"
In any case problem solved. Thanks again.
lol this thread is funny...

lol, yeah I just realized my fault.
And I still don't know how it worked for him .. WinMo doesn't even have "Default" apps

[Q] How do you clear default applications when you cant find the current default?

I understand to do so, you need to go to the current default, and "Clear defaults". Right now I have my "Missed Calls" default application going to my default Phone app, but I used to get a popup that asked me. I didn't think I ever chose a default, but I installed Angel Dailer... I remember it prompted me.. then I installed Notigo to help clear the missed calls, but now, when I click "missed calls', I no longer get the popup on which application to chose. The "Clear Defaults" is greyed out for my Phone, and every dailer app I have. I can't find it at all. Hell, I went through practically every application, and I only found maybe one or two that I could even "clear defaults on", because I rarely check a default.
Any ideas? I read that if you uninstall the current default, then its next to impossible to clear, without re-installing that application. So maybe I somehow chose one and chose it as default... in my sleep.. or something...
Any ideas on how to deal with this? Or perhaps a way to determine the current default application... perhaps getting down into some file somewhere that has it all recorded?
Dialer storage?

Nope, no "clear defaults" on there either..
Install another app that does the same thing, and you'll get the choice again. Then uninstall the new one.

Yes...I had a similar issue. Here are a few suggestions.
1. If you can't clear it by going to the app in settings, try uninstalling/reinstalling. Before reinstalling..choose your default.
2. Try Default App Manager from the market. This app tells you all of your default apps and apps that does the same thing. It helps you clear and chose defaults in the app settings as well.
3. Download GO Dialer from the market (I used this method because I use GO Dialer). Whenever GO Dialer is updated or reinstalled, it'll automatically clear defaults, so this works well. When it asks if you want to use it as the default, choose the one you want then just uninstall GO Dialer.
4. Try freezing the unwanted app until you get your defaults like you want them. (I use Titanium for this.)

"Just once" option missing

On my old phone i used to be able to choose an app for something like a video or a link and set it to always or just once. Now everything is set to "always". Is there anyway I can fix this?
Do you have stock rom ?

I too would love this option on my S7 Edge, stock ROM.
The best work around for this seems to be the app Better Open With.
The S6 had the (far far superior) default Android behavior you describe. The S7 took it out for some reason.

You could remove the default app (if any) for opening the file types you wish, then install this app (free, no ads):
App Picker Classic
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.anyro.picker
then the first time you try to open a file type select "App Picker Classic" for Always use.
In this way every time you'll try to open that file type you'll be presented with a small popup menu from where you can select which installed app to use for opening the file.

This is definitely the best workaround for this issue. And the dev is responsive with requests to add new protocols.
So, I don't know if it's been hidden for awhile, or if it came as part of the recent update... but buried in settings, you can now change the Default App Selection behavior!
Settings -> Device -> Applications -> Default Applications -> Default App Selection -> choose "Ask before setting default apps"

Set apps to open link only once without setting as default

Remember with the Note 5, Samsung made the default app behavior so that they removed the "Just Once" button, so that once you let an app open a link, it would be set as default forever (well not exactly forever but you get the point)? And how much it ticked you off that this was totally unlike the default Android behavior?
Well now you can change it, a new option I noticed in the June security patch I received a few weeks ago. Go into Settings -> Applications -> Default Applications and change the "Default App Selection" behavior. And boy does it feel right. Look at the first image to see what I mean, and the second shows you the two options, the first being the (annoying) default behavior.
