Installing apps direct to the SD card. - Xiaomi Redmi 3s Questions & Answers

I'm on a Redmi 3S with 16 GB internal storage which runs on unofficial version of LineageOS by Fedosis. I was not using an SD card, hence everything was in the internal memory itself.
As the app and app data is getting huge, I wanted to move this to an external storage. So I got a 32 gig SD card. While setting up the card, I used the option "as internal memory". After installation I could not access my phone memory. And when I rebooted to recovery via TWRP, I cannot see this SD card. Only thing I could see was phone memory. So it's kind of a complication to flash apps.
So I again formatted the SD card and set it up "as portable memory". Now I can access the phone memory normally and in TWRP also. But when I try to move the apps, [eg: Hearthstone, Flamingo, etc] it says, it's not possible.
So, how should I set up my new SD card, so that I can move the existing apps into it and also install new apps to the same SD card?

format as internal storage and then go to appsettings and manually move them to external memory. but this isnt supported by all apps.
to flash something with twrp than, you have to put the file you want to flash into /data/media/0/TWRP

[Q] Apps on my internal SD card disapeared when i put in external sd card

Hi
I'm using Go launcher EX. I bought a 16GB micro sdhc card for my huawei titan u8800. When i put it in suddenly over half of my apps disapeared from the app list and in my homescreens they only showed the green loading icon. When i try to click on them on the home screen it says that the application is not installed. I think it was the apps that i had moved to the internal storage that disapeared. In the memory info it still says that the internal memory card is almost used up so it doesnt seem to have been deleted. After i took out the card and rebooted they came back after about 10 minutes. Is it any way to get the apps back while i have the sd card in?
which rom are you using? Stock 2.2.2, cm7, miui?
I am using android 2.2.1 that came with the phone.
So, you din't have an external sd card and used the internal sd to install some apps there?
When put the external sd card, the system start to use this card instead of the internal, and the apps which are installed on internal sd card are no longer be installed.
Therefore, you need to copy them from internal sd to external sd.
You need to copy the folders .android_secure and Android(if exists), and also Data(if exists too) from HWUserData folder to external sd' s root directory.
I think this will solve your problem. If this works, you can after delete these folders from internal sd.
It worked! Thank you very much! Glad i didnt have to reinstall all my applications again....

How to extend internal storage

Hello everyone, I would like to extend my internal storage. I am using Android M on my XT1562.
I tried to use my SD card has an internal storage but unfortunately it stops formatting at 30%. After a reboot the SD card is shown as internal storage but if I open ES file explorer for example the storage capacity is still 10gb (which is the capacity of the internal storage). So I will have to use it as an external storage as before.
Is there any option to change for example the download folder/the install folder for new apps to the external SD card? Or do I need to root the phone?
Another question is if I could use my SD card as internal storage how about transferring files to my PC? How does that work?

Once you format your SD card as internal storage, it can not be seen in any file manager. Also it cannot be seen on pc. Although you can move data through settings which shows your internal and SD card storage but you can only view it through by going to settings.
You cannot the change the location of apps to be installed in Android 6.0

Once you have set the SD card to internal any apps that you install that could previously be moved to the SD card will install to the SD card, any apps that could not be previously install to the SD card will install on the internal memory.

problems with using sdcard as "portable storage" under marshmallow.

Hi, I have opted to use my sd card as "portable storage" rather than adopting it as "internal storage"
But it doesn't work as expected. Such as
1. Apps which previously allow data to be stored on sd card ( such as stock camera ), now simply
stores it in phone memory even though in the app, settings point to sd card.
2. All apps cannot be moved to sd card. Previously under lollipop, some apps can.
Cant find any options to do so under settings->storage & usb OR settings->apps. Is it still possible.?
If yes, what do I need to do?
Thanks
rooting will help ....!!! but dont know how to root.... ??? normal step of rooting not working.....
found this in lenovo forum:
In Marshmallow, you need to format you SD card as internal storage in order to move apps and that to all apps are not movable.
To make changes you can go to : Settings -> Storage -> Click on "SD Card" -> More -> Format as internal
Note : Make sure to take data backup before formatting your SD card, as all data from SD card will get erased when formatting.

Out of scope.
He's asking how to use sd card as 'portable storage' and not 'internal storage'.
I did the same for the camera, and photos/videos are stored in sd card, please check again.
In these 6.0 version for k3, no option in settings to move apps, but maybe will arrive later..
for some apps, you can move data from internal to sd card (like sygic).
Marshmallow another screwed fcuk, format as 'internal storage' r only options for moving apps/games to sd card.

Application storage problem

I have added a 32gb SD Card but I can't even update applications as the rom is too low 8GB I believe. And it's occupied by os mostly. I moved all the apps to sd card but still the apps don't get moved completely from internal storage. And after update the apps get back to internal storage.
How do I get rid of this annoying problem!!?
Try factory resetting, maybe its a bug

So this doesn't happen to anyone else?
Also I noticed when I move app to sd card it doesn't completely move it. say a 222mb app after moving to sd card, it shows 167mb on device storage and 2xx on sd card!
I had that problem.. I partitioned my sd card, I downloaded link2sd plus and I was able to move the whole app to sd card, it's better to use the option link to sd card rather then the option move to sd card, your apps run properly when you link instead of move.. I also installed a custom rom , Igot memory for days

Yes, you cant completely move all app data on sd card. Try link2sd if it works
Storage problem solved for galaxy grand prime plus or other low storages devices
Hi,
This tutorial for those who want to increase storge.
After marshmallow update samsung stops adoptable storage.
But there is one way to enable adoptable storage again.
Guide:
Root your device.
Install Twrp recivery.
Download root essential from playstore
Open the app and select storage.
Now click on adoptable storage and the click on adopt.
Now download ASPlugin.zip from google.
Now flash the zip file from the Flasher given in root essential.
All Done.
Now you can use sd card as adoptable storage in settings.

What are these files in TWRP?

Are these files safe to delete? I was under the impression that with this being a 16gb phone I wouldn't be fighting for internal storage space after owning the phone just a few days and less than 10 installed apps.
Looks like your own backups... your internal storage wouldn't be full if you bothered to use a sd card.
If one does have an external SD card, I don't recall if TWRP defaults to storing there or if you need to select external SD - something to check on for TWRP newbies.

I've found TWRP to usually default to internal storage on every run, but once you set up the path/naming for your backups it usually sticks.
It seems like you are toying around with TWRP, possibly attempting to get ready to flash a custom rom. Given half the storage is system files, you'd barely be able to backup said default files to internal storage without running out of space.
You could always backup these files to a computer, delete them from the phone to free up enough space to download a rom (of which you should verify the md5 checksum), and hope everything goes perfectly.
If anything goes wrong, you'll need access to a computer and either use some advanced fastboot commands or.. an sd card, which you can easily swap on to a computer to download custom roms or backup files.
I would recommend getting a micro SD card for TWRP backups to avoid being fully dependent on a PC or internal storage. I like to have at least two TWRP backups on my micro SD. I know this phone works with 128GB - not sure about larger.
