This seems like a no-brainer, but at the moment it seems that (1) DeX only launches when S8 is plugged into the DeX and (2) usb C hubs actually work quite nicely with the s8, providing power, a working USB port (as far as android compatibility goes) and a working HDMI connection.
Is there anyone working on a way to bypass this limitation so that one could force DeX mode with any display connected either by launching the app regardless of the connected dock verifications, or by simulating DeX connection when an external screen is connected?
I was just thinking about this too
most likely it's not just working as a hub, though, and there's a module in dex that the s8 is communicating with to launch the service
similar to how the gear vr connection works
it would be insane if samsung were to have left it easy to exploit the software in the phone to work with any usb c hub
still, crazier things have happened on xda

Hi all,
I think it's safe to say we all hate the 30 pin proprietary connectors on devices like the ipad.
My only concern is, how capable will the USB port on the xoom be. My immediate requirement would be Audio-in. Do you think I may EVENTUALLY be able to connect a USB-based audio interface (for example: the Griffin iMIC ), once USB support on xoom improves?
Also, would USB hubs allow for expanding the number of devices?
I'm already disappointed that we can't charge over USB. I hope it can deliver more than just USB thumb drive access.
Me and few other people still asking about OTG capabilities so lets make combined thread for all.
What I figured out for now.
First of all RAZR i does not support OTG itself cause has no power on micro USB port so You need more than regular USB OTG cable.
You need minimum 1A powered USB HUB which means just buy regular 3/4/8 ports USB HUB but with 1A (can be 2A too) AC adapter.
So connection should looks like:
RAZRi -> OTG Cable -> USB Powered HUB -> USB Device
It's simple part. Lest make something harder.
List of devices which I tested:
USB HUB
KitKat should bring more OTG capabilitiesfor us so to prepare for that I bought new USB HUB with built in OTG support.
It the same like THIS one and it's dedicated for Samsung S3, S4 etc.
Hub is made not so bad, it has built in OTG support so no need other adapters and it has power connector.
To use this HUB You need to connect it to DC 5V/1A with 1,35/3,5 to USB cable. I used this cable and regular Moto wall charger. You can also use power bank as power for more mobility.
All my USB devices working fine under this HUB so I can recommend this for RAZRi.
Mouses and Keyboards
RAZRi has no problems to detect and handle with most of mouses and keyboards. No modifications are needed. Just Plug & Play.
USB Drives (Pendrives, HDD's etc)
Unfortunately none of them are working. Phone detects devices in some apps but drives are not detected as drives, just devices and they can't be mounted. I think without any kernel modifications drives can't be mounted. Apps to mount drives can't handle with it too.
USB Audio Devices / DAC
Unfortunately I have only 2 devices like that. Sound Blaster Surround 5.1 USB and Logitech Stereo USB Speakers.
Both tested with USB Audio Tester ROOT.
Creative is correctly detected but there is no sound on every setting.
Logitech USB speakers are detected correctly too but I was able to make it works but only to hear sound from internal microphone. No way to hear music or any sound from phone.
I tested SoundAbout Pro tp force playing from USB host but it failed. I don't know any other app can make it. Also I'm really noob at Linux so I have no idea what to modify in Alsa driver to redirect sound on USB audio device.
USB Game Controllers / PAD
I have only wireless XBOX360 pad so can be hard to make it work but heard somewhere that can be possible. In few days i'll check what can be done with it.
Tested with Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2, working like a charm without any mods. OFC You need to use button mapper or any similar app cause after connect pad is working like mouse but after remap we have fully working cordless pad.
USB Network Adapters
At this moment I tested only cheap RJ45 to USB adapter but it doesn't work. Strange cause activity led on adapter is blinking sometimes and it stops when phone is off but nothing except this.
Any other news, suggestions, tests of working devices are welcome.
Network adapters updated.
Wysłane z Motorola RAZR i.
You need to mod the kernel to add usbstorage like the samsung S3 and the framework apk i think, maybe some hardcore developers can help on it.
xbox 360 controller is detected as device but is not working something is missing cuz i added the keylayout for the device and is not working. but you can remap any keyboard keylayout to work as joystic XD.
Updated GamePads section.
USB HUB with OTG added.
Very nice, I tryed, and it works like a charm. I could use a keyboard and mouse runing Ubuntu 15.10 on CHROOT
Is it possible to use dex without the official dock. For instance I already have (Samsung Multiport Adapter (EE-PW700BWEGUJ)) this dock for the Samsung windows tablet.
I hope it does so we dont have to spend $150 on top of spending $850 for the phone.
Very doubtful
I have a suspicion that DeX is just a much-upgraded version of SideSync. It required an application on your PC to show your phone screen in a window. So my best guess is that DeX dock acts as a client app, like SideSync on your desktop was. So, if that's truly the case, I doubt DeX will work with multi-port adapter.

Dex doesn't require a PC . You have to connect it directly to display and input devices such a mouse or keyboard. So you are using it instead of PC.
In my opinion this is just a HDMI adapter with separate USB hub, network socket, and cooler. I maybe wrong, but if im right it should be very easy to connect it in PC mode without Dex or with cheap replacement.

This was exactly the point I was trying to make. SideSync required an app on your PC. DeX' idea of replacing your PC will probably require a similar "app" to run on the dock, in order to force a full desktop.
If S8 does support video out through USB-C port, it may be just a simple screen mirroring. Or, who knows, you may get full DeX experience!

Could this app be an option/solution?

Should work with Chromecast (30 €)

Im sure once we have custom firmwares and so, someone will make it mock dock able and then all we have to do is cast the screen or usb type c to hdmi?
I'm also wondering this. Samsung Sells a USB-C to HDMI adapter for this phone.
I want to get one and try with something called a Pi Top to build the dex into that. So we could have a dex laptop.

I hope so. the phone puts out displayport over usbc, but the dock dumbs it down to hdmi which IMO was a dumb thing to do. They should have passed through the displayport over usb signal instead. Far more flexible.
Well I just bought a USB-C to HDMI with charging port and USB port, I will try it out once TMO ships my phone.

It's probably going to be a simple part/resistor/chip that lets the phone recognise the dock, will probably see clones and alternative solutions on eBay soon enough.
Can't see the dock serving any actual function that stops you from launching Dex without it.
I could be wrong.

Certainly could be some encrypted key or something that makes it more difficult to emulate. Part of the cost of the Dex unit might be for the development of the software for it, even if it is included in every S8.. you need the Dex to unlock it.
So the Galaxy S8 does support USB C HDMI TV out via any HDMI adapter as I have tried.
However, it just mirrors the screen and the DeX experience is no where to be found without actually using the DeX dock!
I can confirm @khurram87 I get the same, screen mirror and no Dex.
Yep tried it with my Samsung hdmi + usb to usbc adapter. Just Hub and Video Out.... LAME.
I plugged my phone into one of these. No desktop.
I am assuming the Dex dock has some firmware which installs on the phone when docked. Someone with a rooted Exynos S8 may be able to pull those files and create an application which would launch into Dex-mode.
Manufacturers just can't seem to resist the urge to take a standard interface and stick some proprietary something on there to restrict your options.
A few years ago it was chargers (standard mini/micro USB charger, but device refused to charge in anything but that manufacturers approved chargers) - both for phones and even PS3 controllers.
Now it seems to be HDMI adapters/docks. The S8 apparently requires the DeX dock to enter desktop mode, despite that dock being nothing more than a standard USB-C dock beneath the surface., though at least HDMI output without the DeX software still works with it. The Nintendo Switch in comparison only allows HDMI output with the official dock.
I hope somebody comes out with a third-party adapter that works with both . . .one travel adapter to let me play the Switch on the big screen, or use my phone as a pseudo-laptop would be a must-have travel accessory compared to the over-priced single-purpose official docks.
^this!
I have the Galaxy S8+ Snapdragon and I love (almost) everything about it.
I am on a mission to have a portable desktop experience, but I am running into an annoying issue. I cannot find any solution to maintain a positive charging state whilst mirroring to an external display. Fast Cable Charging and Fast Wireless Charging both drop to regular charging speed when I am connected via USB-C to any external device. Regardless if I use the Samsung wireless fast charging dock or a USB-C dongle with passthrough charging, I cannot maintain a positive charging state and my battery gradually, or sometimes hastily starts to decline.
I have tried
EP-NG930TBUGUS Wireless Charging Stand
in combination with:
direct USB-C male-male connection to ASUS MB169C+
direct connection to any monitor with Samsung Superior "4K Ultra HD" HDMI Adapter USB-C to HDMI Adapter
I have also tried a USB-C hub: Cynergy mini USB C Docking Station USB 3.1 4K HDMI and Ethernet Multiport Adapter with USB C Power Delivery for Charging and USB 3.0 Hub
Every setup works! Mirroring is displayed at 4k 60hz, 4k 30hz, or 1080p 60hz, depending on which device is used. The only problem is, no matter what settings I change or other battery draining services I disable, the battery keeps decreasing, despite being in a charging (not fast charging) state.
Has anyone else tried this or been able to achieve what I have not? If I cannot do it, HOW CAN DEX DO IT? My thought is that it must be in the software to enable it if Dex is recognized, because they know they have the phone on a cooling stand and they don't want a bigass battery explosion mishap like they did with the Note 7. So, they intentionally disable fast charging while connected to external devices.
Fast charging is disabled once the screen is on, how do you know dex still allows fast charging while running??

Good question.
I gather that your point is fast charging is disabled with an external display is connected, because external displays are always on.
Unfortunately I do not have a Dex in my possession so I cannot speak to how it functions. That being said, regardless of whether my phone is in fast charge mode or not, my battery depletes when I am plugged into any external display. This includes external displays that have their own power source... like my TV for example.
So that would beg the question: how can Dex retain a charge on the connected external display when all other devices I have tested cannot? The only answer I can come up with is that the device allows an accelerated level of charging when connected to a predetermined external device. It makes sense, considering the Dex desktop experience can't seem to be invoked without being plugged into the specific Dex hardware...
Thanks for your response, I am looking for any and all constructive troubleshooting here.
Isn't the screen on when it's connected to the external display? That would disable fast charging.
Hi, did you find any solution? I'm on this mission too, in fact, i'm coming from a moto z because it lacks of hdmi output, and i think you already know that chromecast isn't a solution.
Hello guys,
Does anyone knows if there is a otg cable/hub that can power the tablet and be able to use data like usb connected at the same time?
Thanks
The 2019 tablet does not need this, since the port is USB type C albeit USB 2.0; I have connected mine to a hub and have pass-through charging and data. OTG is not really a thing any more since USB type C came about.

Can you share the type of hub you have been used?
Is the charging speed fine?
Kingston Nucleum. This tablet is in my car and the hub receives power from a 12-14v converter providing USB C PD and USB 3.0 fast charge. Ultimately, the hub defaults charging voltage to that of the lowest device connected. In my case a Sandisk SSD and a Meizu HiFi DAC Pro. This generally means that charging is slow, however it depends on your configuration. I'd say that the charging speed is fine, however it only charges when the car is running or in accessory mode and the tablet is always on in that state. As such the excess power it uses to charge whilst running is only a little more than it uses. It might charge faster if I power the hub from the USB C PD port, however I don't know if this is just pure amps or whether it negotiates higher charging voltages. I don't know if the Nucleum hub allows negotiation of higher charging voltages.

Nice, i'm using for the same purpose.
In my dash car
I'm also using MacroDroid for automation.
My issue right now is how should i leave the tablet when i turn ignition off.
I Think i will just shut it down, but i don't like to wait 30 seconds to but again when i turn it on.
What do you do in your case?
I'll have to check out MacroDroid. I'm currently set up with AutoMate, however there's a few annoyances which I think need ironing out. Vanilla Android Auto might not be the most exciting, but it's certainly the most friendly for driving safety.
I leave my tablet as-is. AutoMate automatically wakes the tablet into car mode on USB power and goes to sleep when it loses that. My car (Chrysler 300C) has accessory power for 30s (I think I can increase this in the EVIC) after the ignition is turned off which keeps the charger energised, and by extension the tablet. I'm not too bothered about having to boot up the tablet if it does discharge its battery to shutdown. I think it's maybe a week or so for it to do that, likely less when the tablet ages. As long as it charges and runs on the supply happily I think we're good. In that instance, I might have to see whether an auxiliary power bank would be a workable option. Not at this stage though. Bear in mind that most modern car head units still take about the same amount of time to boot as an Android tablet anyway.
I'm having minor USB issues myself, however this is down to the cable I need not being available. A lot of USB C "charging" cables are only pinned for power and not data. This might be part of any USB C issues you might be having. I myself need a USB C male with a tight 90° or 180° turn, out to a USB C female for the hub's pigtail. I might have to make the choice to fabricobble myself a USB cable just for this purpose....
This is a photo of the install, prior to me wrapping it in 3M brushed black steel vinyl.
I'm updating all of my comments in various threads on this. My setup with the Kingston Nucleum hubis having minor issues. The tablet still needs to be powered up before I turn on the car or at least supply power to the hub. It seems that if this is done the other way around, that is, to power on the car accessories (and hence the hub) then it seems to end up staying as the "device in charge" of the USB network. The tablet charges (slowly) but doesn't mount the USB SSD drive or the USB DAC. If the tablet is powering the hub (in charge, so to speak) then applying power to the hub via the car accessory supply has it working as expected. This does mean that the tablet ends up with a power drain when the car/USB power supply is powered down which isn't ideal. I've gotten into the habit of turning the tablet off when I park for long periods of time, however I need to boot it up to "take charge" of the USB hub network before I can start the car. It's a bit of a bummer.
I'm unsure whether this is a tablet hardware/software issue, the hub or whatever. Going into Android settings and trying to alter the default USB behaviour returns the message that it "cannot switch roles" or something along those lines. I'm beginning to think that this might be the USB hub refusing to switch/relinquish power supply roles once it has external power and hence not allowing the tablet to mount drives or see connected USB devices. It's weird behaviour, because you'd imagine that if the hub were connected to a laptop this would be a common action.
If it helps, I've read that OTG function is not included by Samsung for their device's USB ports. I've been trying to connect some together to perform file transfers with no success. However, I have been able to transfer and charge simultaneously between my SM-T510 tablet and PCs with the USB configuration set to file transfer.

How to transfare Battery power from Tab to another Android device?
