Which custom ROM has working compass? - Moto G5 Plus Questions & Answers

Which custom ROM has working compass? (US model)

U need a compass sensor

Well then, it's good that it does have one.
Compass apps work fine as I'm on the stock ROM currently.

I just installed the most popular free Compass app from the Play store, then rotate the phone to see if it's accurate.

not LineageOS 17.1
No compass with LineageOS 17.1

Something I need as well
Although only XT1687 has the compass sensor. Other models have NFC,

I must have the XT1687 then, because I have a compass and no NFC.
Is there an answer to OPs question without trying them all myself? I would like a working compass.

[POLL] HTC Sensor issues!

Hi Everyone,
My sensors are hosed. The orientation is completely wrong.
See my G+ post here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/109078966818501160423/posts/cyiiSkHZrSW
Use SkyMap from Google Play store, point your phone in the general direction where the Sun is currently at.. You should be able to find the Sun in the skymap app. If NOT, you have a messed up sensor just like mine...
If you Do please post your model number so we can see how wide spread this issue is.
Thanks!
Mine seems fine, AT&T version ordered launch day

Which version do you have and carrier if its developers edition.. I nearly ordered a dev ed but it wouldn't have worked on my new carrier, Verizon. Mine works great send it back and get a diff one we need you to have a good One =]
Mine's not working either. Unlocked version ordered direct from HTC on ATT.
Wally
Dev edition and sensors are fine
UK unlocked, SH serial. Works great
My Verizon M8 (HTC6526LVW) appears to be screwed: Sky Maps shows the sun in the wrong part of the sky, and compass apps are incorrect as well.
What other information would be helpful?
"Hardware version" of my unit is "0004"
Besides returning the unit, is there any fix for this?
Navigation in Google Maps works perfectly fine, but I assume that's because it's using many more inputs than just the compass.

Try calibrating the compass by rotating the phone 3 times on all 3 axis.

Thanks. It's funny, because I tried that a couple times before I posted (compass apps give that tip at startup).
After your post, however, I tried again, but this time much faster than before. Now it seems to work just fine.
Guess the problem I was experiencing gets dumped into the user-error pile :silly:

No compass for EU version?

I've been waiting this phone for many months, but now reading through the specs again, I just realized that it seems to only have magnetometer in US. Motorola UK, France, Spain or Germany don't mention this sensor...
Is that correct? Will the EU version not have magnetometer? If so, what a fail... screwed Google Maps
Yes that is correct.
But Navigation will still work.
With car Navigation you wont be having any issues.
Foot Navigation could get tricky because it wont show you the direction arrow.

Hey, are you going to get the phone from Europe? If so, where do you plan to buy it from? I'm from Europe so I'm looking for a good shop to buy from.

honestly... I don't know if I'll get it... I've had compass since my first Android back in 2011, and although I don't use Google Maps so often, when I'm in places I've never been, it's very handy to know where exactly am I and in what direction I am looking at.
anyway, if I finally buy it, it'll be in Amazon.
hi guys !
Well i'm also interested for the g5 plus but the only thing that makes me reconsider it is that it doesn't have a compass, but i wanted to ask is there a possibility that the European includes the compass as a hardware and through a custom rom activate it ?
another option was to buy the us version but i don't know the bands will work in Europe (i checked them and 2 to 3 bands are different for Europe)
best regards !
You should re-consider this phone. I am probably going to return mine. I never checked that spec because I didn't think anyone would design a phone these days without a compass. The nfc is a nice to have but I would gladly trade it for a compass.
I use it quite often with maps for navigation in my car and for playing Ingress and it works very good.
GPS fix is very fast and precise (better than my Xperia Z2) and while driving it always "looks" in the right direction, I never miss on roundabouts for example. Still, while NOT moving it is impossible to know in what direction you're looking, I don't care but for your usage case you will have to use landmarks to see in what direction you're looking (and the sun also helps)
Yup, eliminating compass sensor is a bummer, but still navigation works fine, still having a compass sensor would have been helpful.

They seem to do this with every model now. Why does the Euro phone need NFC but the US phone doesn't. Why does the US phone get a magnometer and the European model doesn't. They even did stuff like that going back to the 2nd gen phones. I don't understand their thinking at all.
To make the phone cheaper to build. Personally I don't care for a compass and I've never used NFC neither.

I really don't need either also. I have a Samsung Gear S3 watch that I enabled NFC on and never used it, so I disabled it.
NFC.... that's the main reason I got this phone
What's the reason for my country? Do not have a compass. Maybe looking for another model. At the same price It is not a difficult choice. It's very strange that you do not put a compass on the phone because some countries do not need it, you're wrong.
Why does your country need it?
I'd rather have NFC, i love being able to pay for stuff using my phone, it is really convenient.

Gyroscope is needed for photosphere but maps requires compass
Thanks. I thought that maybe it will require compass to get orientation of the photo, although it is not necessary like gyro.
But what do you mean that maps require compass? I already had some devices without it and maps worked, just didn't show direction to North.

Maps will work just fine without compass. Compass will only show the exact direction which the device is facing faster than the e-compass we have does. Still manageable though, isn't it? Infact, I've been using offline navigation for a couple of days now with cached data and using only GPS while driving and I haven't had a bad time with the Maps app ever.

Compass is good if you are outdoor doing tracking or what else. In everyday life this is not a problem. GPS while driving your car works very well, by foot you'll have some issue but after some steps and with more than 3 satellites giving your position you can use GPS even by feet.
By the way IMHO it's so stupid this lack. Can't understand, it's like the led for notifications. You have it but you don't leave users to manage it... Non sense. I bought it just for the great price/quality. Very good specs for almost 200€.

NFC

Hi there.
I just wonder how NFC is working for you. I have no problems reading a bankcard for example. On various other NFC Tag I have issues. They don´t get recognized.
I also own a couple of NFC enabled Sony Cameras and a Headphone which is NFC enabled. Non of them get recognized. I guess I am missing something but at the moment I have the feeling NFC is working very bad.
In addition. Does someone knows where the NFC antenna EXACTLY is located?
Cheers
I will try to make several NFC badges tests with OP5 at work very soon (I have many types on my desk) and report here :good:
Cheers'
Will do some tests as well when I get mine on Monday and let you know

Moto G5 Plus App issue

I'm not sure where to put this thread but I put it hear. Earlier this year, around September Snapchat released this feature called sky filters which basically uses augmented reality using your primary camera. There's this feature called sky filters which changes the look of the sky. Peppr I know with s7 edges, s8s and iPhones have been able to get the filter to work. On the other hand, I have signed out of the beta, reinstalled the app, rebooted and performed a factory reset and I still don't have any luck. Is this because the g5 plus doesn't have the camera 2 API or is it because I'm on the stock 32 bit room(with an unlocked bootloader). This is frustrating for me. Should I flashing a 64 bit rom and try again because I have heard that moto phones have a stock 32 bit rom. Thanks .
AR usually requires a functional compass, which devices outside of North America do not have.

Was just a thought... guess that isn't it then. Sorry. :/
It's alright. Thanks
Could have something to do with the camera hardware or is there something I need to change in my build.prop or use a custom kernel.
I'm on the pixel experience 8.1 rom btw.

forced daydream vr support

has anybody tried to force daydream vr support on his rooted essential phone?
it's described here at xda (not essential specific).
how are your experiences?
i think about using the systemless magisk-based method and buying a daydream view.
I bought a daydream view when it was on sale for 29.99. i then used the daydream enabler magisk module found in the repo. Installed all the daydream required apps and everything works great. I'm using rooted stock oreo by the way.
that sounds great. i will check which are the differences between the module in the repo and the tutorial i've linked.
in germany the daydream view costs 50 euro (atm on sale) which is about 60 usd. i wonder if i should wait what google shows in october.

the same thing happened to me it all depends on the version of G cam you're using I had to switch to a different one so that I could keep both a custom G Cam and daydream support
