LS997 LG V20 Root/Unroot Questions (Sprint) - LG V20 Questions & Answers

So i would really like to root my LS997 (Sprint) LG V20, my only concern is there is no way back once rooted so if something happens to my phone and need to take it in the the store im pretty much screwed... so is it really worth rooting at this time without a way to go back to? Also would be the best way to root if i did decide to root this device (Link) would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks everyone!!

This is my 2 cents. I have previously rooted phones before as well as this phone, but I can't honestly say that I would recommend it. Don't get me wrong, the unlocking/rooting method (Dirty Santa) is straight forward and the support you get here on XDA is second to none, but if you're catious about not being able to go back to stock you may want to hesitate. You need to consider the pro's and con's and figure out for yourself what you want. I wanted to be able to reboot my phone without a static boot screen. I wanted to be able to update OTA the day the updates were available and to not rely on someone getting a clean update image, etc. I didn't see the benefit of the mods that are currently available, and the promise of getting all the stock LG apps to work on a Sprint phone is not 100% true. You can get some to work without root. There were several that still did not work (if that matters to you). Thankfully my phone glitched out and wouldn't boot, so Sprint offered me an exchange which I happily accepted. Let's just say that rooting on the Sprint variant is not for the faint of heart and you better not expect to need to send your phone in for any repairs as well. Bottom line, if it's your DD and you can't do without, I can't recommend rooting at this time. Just my 2 cents...
EDIT: For me to root again, I would need to have a bona fide working KDZ to return to stock and LineageOS to release an official ROM for LS997 that utilizes the second screen (I like it, so piss off, lol).

Ok so in a nut shell .. I should really just wait for a way to go back if needed ?

NO,
You need to accept two things.
1.) Currently if you root, you will not have a way to go back to FULLY stock and locked, but thats no fun anyways lol,
The real issue with this isn't going back to "stock" but having a "kdz" avalible for the recovery of a hard bricked device, or a soft brick that you cant understand how to fix. This is a restore img that you use a pc to push to phone to update, downgrade, or restore a lg phone, and sadly Sprint wont be releasing a kdz publicly, and its not coming so dont ask for a eta .
2.) The dreaded static on the bootup screen. We lack the developers on the Sprint/LG side of things that work on boot.img's,
This puts a ton of V20 users sprint and others in a bad spot. Where once ur rooted, you have static, and thats gonna ALWAYS be the case, unless you flash a AOSP rom like lineage. For this one, its just a nucence issue on reboots, its not really a issue for use, but man i can say I do miss having a custom boot animation on a reboot ( The static covers up the boot logo etc until you lock your screen)
The rest is regular root stuff. Some bugs etc. As far as getting LG apps back, and 2nd screen support..
The stock lg apps are back, and working as far as im aware. At-least on my rom ive brought back 99% of lgs apps that were gone, but some i didn't care to bring back. Like LG calculator and LG calendar. The Google replacement is better and more synchronization. But things like LG gallery and lg stock messages were things that should have never been pulled, and LG did in fact put them back on their G6. Smart move lg. There isn't any stock apps im aware of that wont come back at this stage.
2nd screen is proprietary, so unless devs build their own app using the 2nd screen code on lineage is stealing and xda wont accept that. So if ur leaving lgs softwear to flash a aosp rom you knew going into this that 2nd screen isnt a option, and if untimately your looking for pure android you should get the pixel xl or equivalent pure device.
There are some things with Encryption that could cause issues, mostly for those using some sort of high end email that checks your device security may not work, but thats going to be any rooted/unlocked device id say.
The statement : its not for the faint of heart: is kinda true. Rooting isn't for some, and you better be able to read/follow instrucions that are provided, and make sure you have a grasp before starting.
There is a ton of info on the site for users to read and digest as well as the V20 section has stayed pretty active with users and devs alike, myself being the latter. There's hope on the horizon for the above mentioned. Both KDZ and Static are works in progress, and unless a dev who is knowledgeable on these things comes over to the device its the same og team working towards perfection.
As far as OTA updates go, there are 0 devices on the market that get software updates from the manufacture after you have modified your system etc. This isnt just manufacture hating on the root, but also avoiding bricking ur custom device with a block update that is targeting files that are gone/moved/changed. So dont worry about ota updates as they are gonna break everywhere on anything that's rooted. The ota updates get pulled by devs, tested and implimented as fast as we can, but if you want the updates as the launch then dont root and accept the device as is. 99% of the time the bennifits of fixing / changing all the other things on the device to be delayed on a ota is worth it. Sprint is the 1st V20 to get onto the Feb Sec. Patch, all other carriers are still on Dec or older. But the update came for the sprint V20, and within 30days of it being live, weve managed to get the ota pushed to our rooted users and its working GREAT!
I can say 1 thing for sure, if you update your V20 to zv6 without being rooted 1st this debate is over anyways as it wont/cant be rooted anymore and the decision is gone to do so. But otherwise, theres a reason youve landed on xda, wondering about what the hype is about rooting etc, ill just leave a screenshot of my device here for looks. Im very proud of the work myself and the rest of the community has done. The device runs 10x faster and longer then the OEM;s software the released, and so many little bugs etc have been fixed also on our end to enhance it further. With the countless options to theme, customize and change ur device, the learning and experience itself is $$.
Ultimately, i vote to root the $H!T out of your phone, and worst case, get it replaced and do it again if you F it up!

Thank you for your detailed and informative reply... Im no newb to flashinging.. And understand the risks involved in rooting this perticular decive... As ive rooted many before.. Im on zv6 so it looks as though i cant root anywaus... Maybe some day we will get some kind of root and unroot... Hopefull thinking hahah ... But ya... Defiantly thinking about going back to samsung next upgrade...

My V20 was an absolute DOG before I rooted.
It was SLOOOOOOOOOW. The only thing that was fast was the battery draining.
Since rooting it is like night and day. Fast and battery last great.

To bad im on zv6 i cant root this

I rooted with Dirty Santa. While it was easy to do, I misread or missed a step, no problems though.
I like being able to get rid of all the LG and Sprint apps, drives me crazy that they sit there even though I have 96GB space on my phone.
The static on boot up isn't too bad, just don't ever let your phone die completely and don't reboot and it's not a bother. A few times I have let my phone go totally dead. Most of the time booting up is not an issue. Once or twice I couldn't get in. I had to remove my case, pull pull out the battery, and boot again.
I do miss getting OTA updates.. not only for security, but because when Android O comes out and I'm not able to update I'm going to feel I am missing something even if there's nothing much different.

Root Now or Later?

Hey all,
I'm going to ordering a Nexus One is the next few days and was wondering whether I should root the device now or wait.
What I'm really wanting is to update the phone once a European flavour of the ROM is available to get multi touch support in Google Maps and the browser, as a UK version of Google Navigation (if it becomes available).
I'm a real newbie, so I may be missing something, e.g. Google Navigation for the UK could be an app on the Android Market if it becomes available.
What I really don't want to do is loose text messages, etc. By rooting the device later on. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
There's no real instant-gratification reason to root now, IMO.
The problem with not rooting now, knowing you will root later, is that you'll wipe your phone (reinstall apps, readjust settings, lose messages, lose call logs). You're going to have to start fresh after you root.
IMO, if you know you're going to root at some point down the road, do it earlier rather than later.
I rooted my G1, but only to get A2SD. There's enough space in this phone that I don't foresee it being an issue in the near future. Plus, after a few months, my SD card kept wiping itself; I assume that's due to too much use of it. I don't expect to root my N1, but who knows, Cyanogen could come out with a superfast ROM, but the phone is so fast as it is that it seems unnecessary.
If you're a true nerd (which I am ironically ashamed to admit that I must not be) you want to root your phone ASAP, otherwise I think you can wait.
There's probably an app out there somewhere that lets you backup your texts. I know there's a Backup program for Rooted phones (Backup for root users) that is a lifesaver, but only if you have a rooted phone.
As of now, I don't think there are enough pro's to warrant rooting, but that's based on my usage -- others really want/need tethering, but that's about all you can get from rooting as of now.
SMS Backup on the Marketplace.
Done.
Just get it over with! However, if you're worried about hardware infant mortality, then, maybe wait 30-60 days. But, remember, when you flash the image to root, you'll have to wipe everything.
Thanks for the advice on the backup software.
Does anyone know if there's any chance that Google Navigation for the UK will be an app or will it be a ROM update for that as well?
The only way I think I will root my phone is if they figure out how to relock it. Im not gonna risk rooting it and then something happening and having a $560 paper weight. I paid wayyy to much for this phone to risk breaking it. If I could "un-root" the phone like you could on the G1/MT, then I would have rooted it right away.
Hold off the on rooting IMO. There aren't any real big reasons why you should want to root quite yet. No super-awesome ROMs or programs out for the N1 ATM. Give it a month and then it'll prolly be a lot more desirable.
I was an avid flasher on the g1! I paid full price on this puppy so I'm holding off. Mainly because I don't want to lose functionality.because we all know with flashing something gets broken! I don't want to lose camera or proximity sensor for a couple of seconds of speed. No offense out there to any of the great devs! I loved all the new roms but I'm gonna play safe for a while!
Nothing worth it right now.
Going to be awhile before it gets to the same point of G1 where so many good roms are out and pluses are clear.
I rooted mine as soon as I got home. Mainly because I wanted to have a poke about and have a look around.

Was gonna make a new post, but this seems more appropriate since it's on the same subject.
Is anyone working on the process of relocking / unrooting it? I know from the "How to Root Nexus One" sticky at the beginning of this area they started talking about it like they were in process, but I didn't see much else come of it before the thread got locked.
I'm very likely buying the Nexus when it hits Verizon, unless this whole Bravo / Incredible mystery unfolds and a better or more appealing option exists at or around the same time. I didn't know anything about the whole rooting business until I started looking into the Nexus and Android, so I did enough research just to sort of understand the benefits of it and kind of get what it is.
I also agree that right now it probably isn't of much use, other than obviously not wanting to have to wipe out all your stuff later on. However, I do see the benefit later on once some really good ROMs are out that cover all bases to keep original functionality and add full multi-touch, more precision to the bottom buttons sensors, maybe even more speed, etc.... I'm with who I quoted though on the fact that I'd like it to be possible to definitely put it back to original factory settings (un-rooted), incase you need warranty work done. That would be the main thing stopping me.
I hate the way stock android looks. I rooted mine so I could theme it to how I want it to look. Mine was rooted about an hour after getting it. 30 minutes longer then I was going to wait because I had a phone call.
WaveSecure is my fav app at the moment- let's you back up messages and call logs - and best of all - let's you remote wipe or kill your phone if it's stolen
Mybackup is a good one for everything including sms and bookmarks.
Astro File Manager let's you back up apps but you have to pay for the full version
I guess the biggest thing is - whether they are trusted or just pirates stealing your info ... like the Banking app scam a few weeks ago ...
I just don't know anymore...

Root or No Root

Hey guys, I have been using smart phones for a while and usually get around great without rooting. I had the HTC Dream back in the day and couldnt use it without rooting, lol. I am upgrading from the G1 which has met the end of the road for me. What are the benefits of rooting? With the Vibrant which I will finally have on Tuesday, is it necessary? And if it is HIGHLY recommended, how do I go about rooting it?
i would say root it cause its really easy takes not even 5 minutes seriously lol but i would also root it cause there is lots of bloatware on this thing so many apps that arent needed
I am not generally a rooter but this one seemed so easy (and it is) that I did it.
I didn't root the phone to dig into the files, I did it just so I could install stuff that I couldn't otherwise install. It bugged me to see a cool app and then read "YOU MUST HAVE ROOT ACCESS". That's not a problem anymore.
You certainly don't lose anything by rooting so I would say go for it.
Any other disadvantages/advantages
really there are no disadvantages accept maybe warranty but i think theres a way to unroot so no probs but once everything starts picking up there will be way more advantages than disadvantages
Besides the fact of removing awful apps (Bloatware), you can use your phone to tether. Also you can use an app called SetCPU to overclock your processor to actaully use your 1GHZ processor which speeds your phone up, along with a ton of other root apps. Youll be able to flash custom ROMS, flash themes, etc. Not sure if there is a volume hack for the vibrant yet, but that has been a reason for past rooted phones as well.
I highly recommend it...
AdFree Android removes nearly all ads from websites and apps
reasons to root
1. Use apps that require root access (such as Titanium Backup and Drocap2)
2. Remove preloaded bloatware (who needs TeleNav when Google Maps Navigation is totally free?)
3. Full access to filesystem (useful for developers and general tinkerers)
reasons not to root
1. Always involves some risk (however small) of irreversibly damaging your device
2. Could void warranty or official support
3. Makes it easier for you to accidentally mess up your system.
I only rooted my mytouch and g1 phones so i can get apps2sd, wi-tethering, and overclockcpu.
however, since the upcoming froyo update will allow most of that, i chose not to root for the time being. the phone is very fast and stable for my current needs and has an ample amount of internal memory. the only other reason to root for me would be to flash roms/themes because of my dislike for Samsung's TouchWiz.
it depends on what you ultimately want to get out of your phone.

Same for me i had the g1 loved to root however i switched to unlocked iphone and now im back with the vibrant , the vibrant does everything i want now and the ease of the rooting might have me root if froyo is delayed by Tmobile or something.
Understood, also from reading I dont think there is a way to unroot the phone at all is it? And another ? since you all are being so helpful, is there already an app to at least see what speed your processor is running at. i know that task managers arent really needed, but some of them showed ur cpu speed as well as the load on it. is that something that anyone had an interest in and found. thanks for all of you all's help
Hmm, still debating on rooting. Waiting for my Froyo update. Plus I want to port my Harley-Davidson theme I made for my G1 to Vibrant. Hopefully they don't use those CRAMS files on Vibrant, cause that is when I had to stop themeing my G1. CRAMS was too difficult to mess with. Is the signing file method gonna be the same as G1, or is there a different testsign file? Plus I hope to see my stock file, plus a thinned down, less bloatware file, and themeing templates. So many factors to consider.
I say ROOT! I've never rooted a phone till this one. I just couldn't stand all the bloatware that was in this phone. They just had to be removed. Now all I'm waiting for are some sick ass ROMs I've seen done for other devices to hit this one. I'm sure I'll need help doing so, but this community has been fantastic when help is needed.
Plus side for me is that I also have a 3 week old New still in the box Nexus One as a backup phone in case I screw this one up.
I rooted mine because people kept saying you could tether, but none of the tethering apps actually WORK. They install fine, and Wireless-Tethering says it's working, but the access point never shows up. And Wired-Tethering says the kernel isn't compatible.
So I'd like to hear from any rooted users who actually got them working AND successfully tethered a laptop with it.

if there's any delay on the froyo update, i'd blame it on samsung
I was hoping not to have to root the phone so soon - especially until I could reset it back and a recover like Amon's is available, but after a glorious couple of days of honeymoon, the lags are just killing the experience for me. And I don't think I have a choice now, but to root. I'll try a general reset and see if it works. I have another Vibrant that seems to be only slightly laggy. But I have to return that one and keep the problematic one :-(
Even moving icons on the desktop now takes almost 2 second. Linpack still clocks at 8.5. No problem at all playing a video - just OS operations. The camera froze for 5 minutes and I finally had to just restart the phone. Restarting the phone is not painful on this device though. Very fast.
At this time so early in Vibrant development.. it honestly doesn't really make much of a difference if you root early or root later. Just enjoy the phone for what it is as of right now until the modding community becomes settled in. Just be aware if there are any incoming OTAs if you are unrooted to make sure that the OTA didn't do anything that would change the rooting process.
- Recovery (ability to flash custom ROMs) is in the making
- Custom ROM developers -- in the makes soon
So here's the question. Should I go ahead and invest on a Vibrant (but work for it will begin when I get the Slide done) cont... about 7 hours ago via HTC Peep
If I keep getting the donations I am now, I can get the laptop along with the Vibrant, just considering the Vibrant first ...cont about 7 hours ago via HTC Peep -WesGarner

I would personally go ahead and root it to unlock some essential applications and it takes <1 minute to do and its pretty simple. But there isn't any rush to root it now or later.. not at least CyanogenMod6 (Android 2.2) gets released for this beastly phone to have JIT.
nm found it

With the root method given so far, I think the only thing you have to do to unroot it is to remove Superuser Permissions. That's the only thing that the root procedure added to the phone.
I'm rooting my phone when I get it, just because to me (at least) it is a part of the true android experience. I'm just geek enough to like to play with my equipment! Hurry up T-Mobile!!!

Just purchased a MXP and have questions

While I wait for the arrival of my MXP I have some questions for the community so that I can hit the ground running. First thing, I'd like to unlock my boot loader but I was just curious if there is a way to re-lock it afterwards just in case I need to send in for repairs or something along those lines? Also wondering about VOLTE support. I see some roms that state they have it working but is this a stock feature or do I need to use a custom ROM to get VOLTE to function? Also is there any known method of rooting without unlocking the boot loader just in case re-locking it is not possible? Thanks for the help everyone.
I am coming from a g920a. That phone is torture for someone like me who likes stock Android and rooted devices. Probably the worst phone I have ever had. Can't wait to get my hands on my MXP and leaves this piece of junk behind!
I'm on Verizon and I can confirm it supports advanced calling, which is VoLTE as far as I know but it might require turning it on at the provider level.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
I haven't messed with VoLTE yet so I can't answer those questions, but as for your others: The bootloader can be relocked, but the unlock method involves submitting an unlock request code to motorola, and they immediately email you an unlock key, along with a warning about voiding your warranty, so even relocking it does not unvoid your warranty. HOWEVER, it only voids your warranty for software issues. If it's a hardware problem unrelated to the bootloader being unlocked, they'll still handle it, and accidental drops and things are still covered if you buy an accidental damage warrenty. Also, as far as I know there is still no way to root without unlocking the bootloader.

Whoops, yeah I guess they fixed it down the line. Sorry, I've been enjoying stock+xposed too much to follow custom development.
Edit: also root without bootloader unlock will likely never happen. We have a root method already, so there's no incentive to find another method.
The answer you seek was right in the first page of this forum....

That being said, I would consider waiting until after Marshmallow drops before you unlock your bootloader so as not to interfere with any OTA's. Conventional wisdom is that it is coming within the next few weeks as the "test drive" has already started and a "soak test" should follow shortly.
yeah i know it can be unlocked I already read that post. I would not have gotten this phone if the boot loader was not un-lockable. That's the whole reason I am moving away from my AT&T Galaxy s6. I was just trying to clarify if re-locking made any difference as far as the warranty is concerned. I appreciate the answers guys. Just trying to determine if I should keep it stock or use a custom ROM out of the box. Sounds like I will go stock for the time being. Now as far as unlocked boot loaders interfering with OTA's? Is this really a thing? And wouldn't somebody just post the OTA image on the forums when its ready anyway?

Well as to it being a thing, I certainly can't say for sure. But what reason is there to unlock the bootloader if you're not going to root? And once you do that, you almost certainly will not get OTA's. What am I missing? Is there another reason you are looking to unlock?
The one thing I don't know is if there a some type of a "tamper flag" that would require something like triangle away.
You don't think you could just do a fastboot oem lock?
Sorry to give you the wrong impression but I fully intend to root and also install Xposed and all that good stuff. There are a lot of things I need that require these things such as BubbleUPNP's audio cast feature, and of course the all powerful AdAway and YouTube AdAway in addition to Titanium Backup and Viper4Android etc. I normally use that stuff every day and so dealing with my last phone was like living in Android Hell. All the great hardware but software that was hopelessly mangled un-rootable and just sad for such a powerful device as the s6. Being able to have these things back is my number one reason for buying this phone so you best believe that's the very first thing I will do once it comes in lol. The only reason I am so concerned about the warranty is because I have needed it in the past for several other devices and so don't want do something that is un-doable. But from the sounds of it this will only affect me if the software causes the defect and I am fairly confident I can fix anything software related all by myself. Mostly only concerned about hardware defects and if they will still be covered that is just perfect.
And already I am feeling the difference here in this part of xda. The forums for the g920-a are like calling out into the dessert, and in no time at all you guys have address my major concerns. Thanks again

I'd still recommend waiting at least a couple of weeks to see if Marshmallow shows up!
I'm coming to the MXPE from a OnePlus One which I have to say was one of the funnest phones I've ever owned. I wasiunlocked, rooted and flashing CM12.1 nightlies about twice a week.
I thought I would miss it, but so far so good on the MXPE without rooting. We'll have to see what happens after MM drops. I'd like to get it rooted, but I haven't done nearly the amount of modding you've done.
Good luck with your phone. I can honestly tell you it's a really nice device!
While its tempting to wait for marshmallow to show I cannot live without root any longer. I have already been without it for months because of this damn s6. I'm sure someone will upload the OTA as soon as it's available so I'll just flash it when the time comes.

Well if you're an xposed user you should root immediately with no concern about the 6.0 OTA, since xposed doesn't work on 6.0. I'm not moving to 6.0, myself, until xposed is released for it. I use xposed modules everyday and am not giving it up, not even for doze mode.
That's kinda how I am feeling as well. I can achieve similar results to doze with the xposed app amplify with enough tweaking so its not a big deal.

H820 OTA Update Aug 18

E: The Unsolicited OTA Update, or Why I'm Leaving This Phone. See post 3 for details.
I got a notice that there is an update for at least the ATT 820 variant of the G5 today. I'm not going to flash it until someone else does or we have a changelog, I dont want to ruin any potential root capabilities we might be looking into at the moment. Does anyone have any information on it? Guessing it's an attempt to close up some of the QuadRooter vulnerabilities, but that's just a guess.
Any info here?
E: Contacted both LG and ATT. Supposedly it's just to enable wifi calling and nothing else, but they didn't offer a changelog or anything so I'm not going to flash it as I don't care about that functionality.
I updated for the hell of it.
3 out of 4 vulnerabilities have been patched. Along with this, I've immediately noticed they added the normal launcher with app drawer. Much nicer.
Figured I'd take one for the team on this one...so if you want root, I'd suggest blocking this update as long as possible.
Update time. So, I didn't initiate the update. I didn't want to install it at all. I look down at my phone this afternoon and it says update on progress... Nice. OK, fine whatever.
Now there's a persistent notification in the pull-down whenever you don't have mobile data enabled. And you can't get rid of it unless you turn on mobile data.
Sorry, but **** this. I'm getting rid of the phone. This is ridiculous.
Screenshot attached. Returning the phone and probably just going to get another G3 that I "upgraded" from. Pity, I liked this phone, lots of potential but I can't handle no root, bootloader lock, ads, ads, ads, ads, and persistent notifications. I just honestly don't see how anyone can handle a phone without root and adblock these days. I also can't understand how if a consumer spends $600+ for a device that they cannot do whatever they wish to it. Brick it, throw it in the ocean, root it. Imagine if computers all came with a locked administrator account. Absurd.
Lol i will never root my device, last time i did, i ****ed it up, so i am happy with my stock lg g5, i will never root anyphone
I'm also not digging the H82011K OTA as it rendered my favorite data saving app unusable.
I was very happy with my rooted/rom'ed G3 until a bad CM13 nightly fried the motherboard. Now I've been suffering the life of G5 over a month and while it's not terrible (Adguard helps) it's just not the same. I'd still like to repair that G3 someday if I ever get the time/ patience to get around to it...
Nowadays people don't root often your phones because the software is getting better. If this is your first priority, you should get something like the Oneplus 3.

Really wondering which oem (and when ?) will jump first on kernel_version 4.x with possible "Live Patching"...

As far as "Live Patching" is concerned, I hope none of them do - ever. If I wanted my devices hijacked and tampered with behind my back I'd use Windows 10. This sounds bad for freedom within the Android community (why many chose it over iOS in the first place).

Shouldn't take more than a half hour. I replaced the broken screen and digitizer on my G3 after I dropped it on its face. Pretty easy really, the hardest part of getting the screen off was just getting the adhesive separated from the screen > body. Not bad at all. The board would be easier, it comes out as a piece.
Reason I downgraded to a G5 from my G3 is because even though the replacement screen was LG branded, it still had quirks... I'd be typing something and suddenly "This is a sentence I'm typinng aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"
Super annoying. But honestly, not as annoying as the newest G5 update + ads ads ads ads...

Should I root and flash?

I'm about 2 years into my ownership of Moto G7, and have yet to root or install any custom ROM, so I'm running the latest OTA update of Android 10. In recent weeks, I'm really starting to notice a big slow down. So looking for quick and honest advice: will it be worth the time and effort to root and flash a custom ROM? Will that noticeably improve my performance and make me happy continuing to use this phone for a while? What's the best custom ROM for this phone right now? Thanks!
Probably should have stopped OTA updates on the last good version. Updates kill phones.
If the OS is fast, stable and fulfilling its mission... let it be! I'm still running on Pie on my 10+, no updates for over 1.5 years... and zero issues.
Security simply isn't an issue with Androids most times even with outdated firmware unless you do something stupid.
My current OS load is over a year old...
Try a factory reset if you haven't done one since a major firmware update. That may resolve the issues.
...or find whatever is slowing u down. or I can recommend Lineage OS 18...constantly updated and polished...lots of users hence good support!
I'd say yes, but have a backup phone. Maybe have a plan to buy a new one if this fails. It has been two years since I rooted my black/blue one and I haven't regretted it. Some of my apps require it.
I just got another one like it only in white that's badly broken. I have tried to root it but I'm tired and pain meds are making my mind unclear. I did unlock the bootloader without any trouble. Mainly I wanted it so I could change its battery without damaging it, then decide if I want to change the battery in the black one or take it to a shop.
If I can bring the project phone up to speed I'll run it with my secondary line.
In short, though, yes. Be sure to back it up first, as this will delete all user data. The G7 64 ROM / 4 RAM is a very capable phone even as old as it is.
Finally mustered the courage and did it. So far, so good. Glad I did. Thanks for the advice!
