Hi all!
I'm planning to buy S8 mostly because of Samsung Dex feature.
That's why, before finally buying it, I want to know a couple of things..
1. Can Samsung Dex be used with a rooted/unlocked bootloader device? Is it protected by Knox security?
- I usually unlock bootloader and root my device as soon as I get it, but I don't want to break samsung dex compabilty.
2. Can Samsung Dex be used with an USB-C extension?
- I saw on a youtube video where the phone doesn't recognize samsung dex when used with case, since it can't dock perfectly. Personally, I'm quite paranoid and want to use my phone with the best protection I could get (which means a huge rugged case). But, I plan to use samsung dex quite frequently - which means a hassle if I need to repack my case every time I plug to the dock. That's why I have to know whether samsung dex is usable with a USB-C extension to prolong the docking.
Thanks in advance for the help

Hi guys, picked up a smart dock over the weekend, gonna try a new project where I get rid of my PC and use my phone for everything, and see how it goes.
Only issue I have is that when connecting the Note 3 to the dock the screen doesn't switch off, and because its only MHL 1.0 it won't charge the phone quicker than it discharges. I got the smart dock after watching a youtube video where the guys screen goes off when the MHL is connected and he says that some do, some don't and he can't find out why or what causes it.
I did find an app that switches the screen off when using MHL but it needs root and my device is only a couple weeks old and I have no insurance, so not ready to trip knox and void my warranty just yet, although if there was a custom rom that handled docking better than stock I probably would just insure it and go for it.
Also, anyone found a dock with MHL 2.0 and USB OTG? Could only find MHL 1.0 when I was looking (want 1080p goodness really lol, MHL 1.0 only seems to go to 720p).
Thanks in advance
Hi guys, time to flash my month-old Note 3. Unfortunately it came with KK already installed so ok, Knox 0x1, but it'll be worth it.
Qn1.
Having flashed the phone, there are a few features I want to know that I'll get, or how to get if not built in to the ROM. Will I be able to:
- use USB mass storage?
- use USB OTG?
- plug the phone in to a computer as charge-only? (The absence of this in stock is pretty annoying)
- plug the phone in to a computer as a webcam? (Even my 50€ smartphone could do this)
- keep Sketchbook Pro? (It comes as a free full app with the Note 3, so wondering if a new ROM would still have it.)
- use the infra-red controls without mucking around with any Samsung software/sign-ins?
Probably more but I can't remember.
Qn2.
From what I hear, the top contenders for a good ROM are Omega and X-Note. What is the general difference between these two? Or is it all just in the details?
Qn3.
I bought my phone from Hong Kong. Does this give me something worry about when it comes to flashing a new ROM?
The baseband version, for example, is N9005ZHUENB5. I think that's different to many I see here, and am not sure if that's bad thing.
Qn4.
Finally, could someone suggest a good link for guidance on flashing either X-Note or Omega? I ask because when I google I turn up the last 6 months' worth of results... and I'm never sure what's still valid or what's outdated.
Many thanks

I can answer these:
- use USB mass storage? yes
- use USB OTG? yes
- plug the phone in to a computer as charge-only? (The absence of this in stock is pretty annoying) I plug mine into the computer to charge it, but I'm not sure what you mean by "charge-only".
- keep Sketchbook Pro? (It comes as a free full app with the Note 3, so wondering if a new ROM would still have it.) yes
Thanks.
By charge only I mean that the computer doesn't recognise it as anything, so it just charges. Useful for when I want to plug it in to a friend's machine without having to hope that he doesn't start rummaging through my files.
Hi everyone, I bought the SM-T230NU while on holiday and just tried to use it with a USB to mirco-USB adapter, only to realize this tablet doesn't allow USB host !
I'miss a little pissed and after scanning through the XDA forum I'm still not certain whether the root will allow me to enable this function, could someone let me know if they've found a solution to this ?
I would just like to be able to read USB flash drives directly off of the the tablet, nothing complicated, I can'tell believe Samsung would forget this function on the 7" version but include it on the 8"!

I just became a xda user, so just trying to help out by replying...
You've probably seen this thread by now, but lists details of how to detect USB host support.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1493325
I don't think root will give access to USB OTG if it doesn't support this feature out-of-the-box.
It sounds like a kernel customization functionality which is not a simple solution that you are looking for.
In a round about way....
Persistent Root will allow custom recovery> will allow flash-able ROMS> Will allow custom kernals> Will allow OTG.
tab4 7 currently has the first two but no source for the second two. So currently, no OTG support.
I just purchased one (yesterday) due to size constraints, and its the cheapest(only) 7" tablet I could find that was less than 111mm wide. But my application that limits the size also requires OTG. So here's hoping that the most excellent and smart peoples of XDA can pull through for us.
Flashable ROMS for SM-T230NU ? are you talking of the flashable Stock Roms available on this Sub or some other custom Rom I'm not aware of yet?
No, it seems that the poor tab 4 7" has both a root and custom recovery, but alas, no flash-able roms or custom kernels. And I've all but given up hope that there will ever be any forward progress on this device. Seems that when knowledgeable (in this area) people find out the hardware in the 7" they just return it for the 8". I have a space limitation that very specifically necessitated the use of the tab 4 7" so I bought it and used it in the hopes that there will be development for it in the future. Doesn't look like there is hope that will ever happen. Mostly I just need OTG + Charging ability.
Maybe when prices get low enough for the 7" I will just buy one and send it to a well known developer to see if he can do anything with it. Still, even then, if there's no way to do anything with it...
Hello guys and girls, im wondering if there is anyone in the know of what i want to try and attempt. Firstly, i have an old Galaxy S4 i9505, it was my old contract mobile which was put in a draw and forgot about as the LCD smashed and i upgraded anyway. I recently went out and purchased an Amazon firestick for the sole use of KODI, and it works fine (i would like to auto boot straight to KODI or even do away with the amazon operating system all together but ill save that for a future post). My questions are..
1. I have currently got the S4 with the smashed screen rooted, on a custom Rom, (OMEGA v21.1) usb debugging enabled and with a nifty program called Vysor i can connect it to my laptop and browse through the phone and add/remove install what i like. I obviously need usb debugging enabled to see the phone through my laptop but cant see how i could install another rom without seeing the custom recovery on my pc (as it only lets me see and use the phone when its fully booted up) Id like to use this phone purely as a media device linked to my TV with an MHL v2.0 adapter (which i have and works fine with an exception).
So first question, is there anyway of installing a Tablet type rom onto this phone without seeing the recovery menu (doing it blind is out of the question as the touch is also broke) but the rom i install (preferably with gaaps with it) as i need no function of a mobile whatsoever, only wifi and bluetooth i guess, but id need it to have usb debugging automatically enabled or enabled in the rom i flash as id have no way to access the phone because of the screen. any help on this would be a great help.
Now onto my second question..
2. While MHL works fine and i can use KODI ok from my S4, there is a massive problem i need to overcome, the battery drains faster than the charge gives, my understanding is that while the S4 is connected to an MHL lead it will only draw 500ma of power as its recognised as an USB device. So my thoughts are: as a fully charged LI ION battery on the S4 is around 4.3 volts with amp drawing what the phone needs (actual phone rated at 3.8v so at a guess a supply of 3.3v-4.3v is perfectly fine, im wondering if a voltage drop device (from 5v to 3.8) soldered straight onto the battery pins on the phone would keep the phone going without any type of drain, as in it would power the phone inevetably while runnin kodi or whatever else i decide to run on it, ive scoured the net for info on my project but cant seem to get any info about it. i really appreciate any help whatsoever as im quite stuck at the moment. Thanks.

1. I still don't understand why you want to flash a different rom. What will be the difference? There is to much risk imo. You will need a rom with usb debugging enabled by default and rsa security set off. Why not just find a different launcher that will suite your needs? But if you still want then make sure you have TWRP on your phone and use something to control TWRP from the playstore.
2. You need to find a kernel that supports usb fast charge. That will boost your charging to around 1000ma.
help
First thanks for the reply Lennyz1988, the only reason I wanted another rom flashed was is im in no way going to be using it as a phone, so would rather have a rom that is very light and very light on battery (as in background proceses). As for a custom kernel would that have to be also flashed through recovery ? As I've not flashed custom kernels im not sure on how to go about it, will any custom kernel work ? Sorry for the questions but is there any chance you can point.me in the direction of 1 I'd need ? Thanks.
It will be awesome if someone can mod Samsung Note 9 to display Dex UI wirelessly (i.e. using wifi mirroring technology).
Personally, I'm against it because the lag will just ruin the experience... But, well, experiencing it myself can change my opinion
Um OK.

I have the Microsoft wireless adapter (Miracast) that I use with my Surface Pro 3. I also occasionally use it with the Note 8, mostly for watching videos. The experience has been great and the lags are infrequent. Certainly not a dealbreaker.
I think it will indeed be cool if Dex can be done via Miracast. I use couple of Dex apps (Dex Max and Desktop Hub) and it will be interesting to find out what their developers think. Maybe it will be possible to add a toggle to the apps that trigger Dex mode instead of screen mirroring when the phone is connected via Miracast...
Great idea
I guess Samsung heard you. Read this article ->

Awesome! After 2 years, my post now became a reality with the recently announced Galaxy Note 20 ultra.
Wondering now if this feature can be brought to our old note 9/note 10 via software update or does this require a specific hardware?
What you think guys?
Would be very happy if it's a software thing and they give it to us with the OneUI 2.5 update (if we even get that first xd).

GOOD NEWS !!!
Well I don't how and when it came to our Galaxy Note 9 but the Wireless DEX function is indeed there !
I was just testing the mirroring function with my Galaxy Note 9 and a Amazon FireStick (should work the same with a Google Chromecast) connected onto a 24" monitor via Smart View, then by chance at the end I just pressed the Dex icon and the Dex desktop display just appeared on the monitor !!!
I still have a message telling the "connected TV" is not fully optimized for wireless Dex but it's still working.
Then, There is a second message saying we can use the Note 9 as a touchpad and it works !
I don't have a USB-C hub with me but I guess we could use a mouse and a keyboard as well...

Don't remember when it came either, but I've been using it flawlessly on my roku tv for streaming from sites. Still get hiccups with it occasionally after a period of time though. Reconnecting usually seems to fix them it seems.
