Since about 6 months ago, Google has been allowing stock 7.0+ Android users to manually request the latest monthly OTA updates the moment they are released. No side loading or beta sign ups required.
Step 1. While connected to WiFi, open Settings and then tap About Phone and System Updates.
Step 2. Ignore the text that says there are no updates found and tap to check manually.
Step 3. Wait about 10 seconds after it says there were no new updates and the OTA will begin downloading.
This will be the 6th monthly OTA I've received on my first try the day of its release in this fashion. Knowing it would happen again I recorded a video of this in action with today's May security OTA.

I'm on tmobile, and i still havnt received the update.. When will it come out for me? I am using a unlocked one ..
I checked -- About > System Update > and it immediately goes to no update available
-- Non rooted stock phone
Your question has been answered in a couple other threads already. Google is releasing the update in rolling batches. You'll probably have it by the end of the week. Be patient.
Install it manually if you're in such need (not trying to sound harsh), but yes, I think you should just use the standard manual update method. You'll get what you want, without having to wait.
This is the first smart phone I have ever had the enjoyment of using. I intend to root the phone so that I can get rid of the junk I don't want and enable the features that should be included on my phone.
My question, what do I have to do to not be forced into an OTA update? When I go to the Update menu setting I see no option to ignore updates. Also, is there a setting to not get notified of the updates? Like I had a required OTA voicemail update that I am unsure of how to ignore. Thanks
As far as i know the voicemail update should be fine. From wgat ive read its just to have voicemail to text. Jyst dont check for updates. If they come up automatically it usually asjs if you wan it

You cannot ignore the voicemail update. It adds text-to-speech and is mandatory for all Sprint handsets with VVM. There is a way to shut off the updates under settings/about phone I believe, I haven't gotten mine turned on yet, just got it minutes ago, I'll edit with more specifics if you need.

You will be prompted to do an OTA and if you are a custom rom you will not even get the prompt. However, if you end up wanting the OTA you will have to revert to complete stock. Any removed stock apps can potentially screw up the update process. Generally though its just fine to wait until the devs cook up something with the update and then just use their releases. If it is a necessary update someone will release it in the form of a flashable zip and you won't need to worry about updating OTA =)
Turning off OTA's
way back when before I rooted my hero I had to go through the hassle of reverting to a previous android version in order to root because i naively accepted the OTA update. Trying to avoid this on my shift.
I went into "settings" -> "system updates" -> "HTC software updates" and unchecked the box for "Scheduled Check".
Is this enough to turn off my OTA updates or would the update come from Sprint and have nothing to do with HTC updates?
First thing this morning, my phone insisted on a password instead of fingerprint for "first attempt after restart". But the Status page shows that the phone has been running for more than 600 hours, and I'm still on API2, Sept. 1 security update. But the Update page has a greyed-out "Continue update". When I click on Software Update, it says up-to-date and tells me as usual that I have to wait a few hours to check again (until 24 hours after my last manual attempt, which also said up-to-date).
The Continue Update is typically greyed out when an update hasn't already been downloaded, so you probably didn't have a failed update. I'm just getting a little upset that the October update is taking so long. Just saw this morning that the Nexus phones are already getting their November update...

My device started the update this morning, it ran in around 253mb, so I would guess its a minor update. I haven't let it finish, I want to give the 935U a run
Got it now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-s7-edge/how-to/g935aucu4apj4-oct-1-2016-security-update-t3496395
I got the update. They sneaked in Fullscreen app.
I manually checked for the update and got it just now. It's so irritating that ATT takes so long to release these updates to us!

Over 200MB ... should be more then just security update. Security update is usually something around 40-60MB

The updates
What's new: Full Screen – Mobile Video Service and Android device security enhancements
What's changing: Improved volume for Enhanced Push To Talk (ePTT) and fix for calls failing to go to Voice Mail when calling non LTE devices
What's going: Milk Music
Via AT&T
All they put in the update was the Full screen App which can be disabled with Package Uninstaller
Hi I have an unrooted 6p I have never messed with the software but I am on the dp program I usually get the updates within hours of it being announced. But for some reason I have not gotten the 7.1.1 stable with December security patch which is odd but anyway I tried side loading the OTA and it gets to 40% and then says installation aborted. I have the and setup right and all that I can reboot into bootloader does anyone know why it would be doing this? When I was at work today I thought maybe if I disable the allow seamless update option in developer options maybe that will allow it. Any thoughts?
Ok I feel like an idiot. I tried again when I got home from work and it seems that the file I am trying to flash is from November 1 which I already have installed. It is the last one one the Google OTA page. So is it not out yet for the 6p? I'm confused can anyone help me out please
I believe you'll need to unenroll from the beta program first before attempting to sideload the OTA image. The latest OTA image is NMF26F, which includes the December security patch. And make sure you boot into recovery, and not the bootloader to install the update using adb.

Ok if I unenrolled from the dp program I should just get the OTA then I won't have to side load is what I'm guessing. It seems that Google had the stable build done before they released the last dp because the file says November 1 build and I got mine on November 5 that is why it won't allow it.
Picked up a Moto 6 Plus (XT1926-7, retla) last month and have been running the latest 8.0 (8.0.0_OPWS27.113-89-5) with unlocked bootloader and Magisk. Working flawless. :good:
Decided to take the plunge to Pie last night, which ended up with me have to do a full restore of a 8.0.0_OPWS27.113-89-5, then taking the OTA to 9.0
Upon successful OTA to 9.0, I then rebooted and used fastboot TWRP to try to take a clean nandroid backup. I could backup all partitions except Data (fork failure to make the rar).
I then rebooted again (still stock, no Magisk install yet), and noticed that I was getting a "dm-verity disabled" warning on my bootup screen and then a warning under System Update check that says "Updates are disable for this device due to compromised system integrity".
Have others tried the same yet? Is this "compromise" due to the unlocked bootloader, or did TWRP trip something? Is it possible to run Pie with Magisk and still be a google certified device?
Just tried again:
* Clean wipe and install to 8.0 (89-5)
* Bare bones phone config.
* enable USB Debug
* Accepted OTA Update and reboot
* Successful update to 9.0 (PPW29.116-11, patch level Dec 1, 2018)
* Play Store version 13.0.23-all [0] [PR] 227930514
* enable USB Debug
* reboot
* following warning on the blue/yellow bootup screen: "Verity mode is set to disabled"
* System Update page: "System Integrity is Compromised", "As your device system integrity is compromised, it is no longer eligible for software updates. Please contact customer service to re-program the device with official software."
EDIT:
* Magisk rooting still works: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g6-plus/how-to/3-how-to-install-root-aka-magisk-t3854244
* TWRP installer works: https://forum.xda-developers.com/g6-plus/how-to/twrp-installer-zip-evert-t3875657

I used the files below to return to stock 8.0 prior to upgrade. I did not use files to upgrade to 9.0, I used the OTA system updater.

Hmm. I would not use the twrp installer, since I haven't heard anywhere that it would work flawless with evert. Skip that and use fastboot boot twrp.img to access recovery. Do not flash. Boot.
May i ask you a question kind sir. I have the same model (G6 plus) de same oppw thingy (8.0.0_OPWS27.113-89-5) and when i hit the update button did not get any OTA. It says i have the latest version and still in november security patch. How did you trigger the OTA? Or you sideload it? Thanks kind sir
Nice to see that you had an OTA to Pie. I was about to ask where you live, because I don't have the OTA here in Belgium yet. But then I saw you have a RETLA device, so I guess I will have to wait some more!
Is the phone working well on Pie?

I've used both, but the installed one worked identically so far for backing up and installing Magisk.

I'm on the retla software channel, which I believe is the first to get the Pie OTAs.

Yep.. purchased on Amazon in the US (I don't think they ever officially released G6+ model direct to US). So far, working smooth. Haven't found any bugs.
Should also note that even with the Verity and "not update eligible" issues, and now rooted with Magisk, it does still show as Play Store Certified.
@thump i am in the retla too. I did not get the pop up update neither via security o update section. I have the same OPWS as yours too ??

Weird. Mine badgered me every hour with a "Software Update is Available" notification for the past week. Even when I did the clean stock reflash to 89-5, it notified me a few minutes after clean reboot, before I even got around to checking System Updates. Maybe rolling it out in staggered waves of some type?
