Post updated 7/28/17
This method was borrowed from another thread.
Thanks to @heathmcabee for this.
It's not my discovery but I'm sharing the write up here since we already have a thread about this.
Copied and pasted and I've verified that it works.
Open quick shortcut maker
Enter "test" into the search box (without quotes)
Select the last entry (com.test.LTEfunctionality)
Once it expands, select the last entry
Tap on "try"
Scroll to and select the entry that says "APN setting"
Tap the entry that's already selected (blue dot)
Scroll down to "APN type"
In the box, it'll say "default, mms"
Tap the box and change it to read "default, mms, dun"
Make sure there's no quotes or spaces.
Tap the three dot menu on the very top right and select save.
Profit.
Hit thanks if this helps [emoji4]

Mine is an older plan as well. I have the $100/mo unlimited everything plan for two lines (does not include Hotspot)
@izzibew26 are you able to help us out with a Hotspot workaround?

I heard that @paul122 method with adb works on the s8. It's in the sprint s7 edge guide section.

Can confirm, works like a charm. Thank you so much izzibew26 for sharing this. I have been looking for a work around for a while, and without root, my usual method using the build.prop file doesn't work.
Wait I have yet to update to the latest fw, The one that removes Bixby button remapping. Does that update also remove Hotspot?

I have the latest update. I haven't tried to remap the Bixby button yet and my Hotspot works without any workaround.
I'm unable to tell for sure if the latest update kills Hotspot.

My hotspot does not work out of the box but I don't have that added plan. A workaround would be awesome. Thank you!
I have the latest update and the adb method works for the hotspot and so does Bixby remapping

So has anyone actually been successful? Is there anyway somebody could post a quick guide? I went to the thread for the S7 Edge already, but I can only get so far when it comes to the adb shell settings. Any help would be appreciated. -x_

Is everyone else having the same luck or do we need to work on a workaround?
I have the family unlimited plan that does NOT include tethering. My son has the G4 and he gets the "not subscribed" notification when he turns on Hotspot.

Check this thread for the S8+ just did & native hotspot works.. if you ever update profile you may have to re apply the mod it was confirmed to work on QFJ. I just got mine & it took maybe 3 mins!

This time it is just not going away. I have also selected =false using root explorer for that one value that was listed in a previous post.
I am not on att I'm in another country with no tethering restrictions.

Can't edit from my phone but in an update to what I wrote earlier. Editing the build.prop file actually worked but required a reboot.
In retrospect I should have thought of that but it wasn't listed in the op.
So, if you are also getting this problem
Follow the directions on this post

Then REBOOT AFTER.

I actually have an employee plan so 40 for unlimited and tethering but if you add the apn u can also use barnicle wifi tether. U can't find it on the market (anymore/F-u too att) you'll have to Google but it is better than using my included option in network settings. I have also used the open one on code.Google.com and has been great. I love my atrix and webtop and lapdock but if I had a chance at getting it all on tmo or sprint, I'd jump ship. Making Google hide apps from it's own users? Wtf? If I were sprint I'd be praying att buys tmo because everyone would run to sprint. If I didn't have said plan, I'm not sure I could take the abuse they give their high paying customers.

Sideload Barnacle or download PDANet
yea I use an unlocked AT&T atrix on Rogers and couldn't get the hot spot to work either. Just downloaded the android wifi tether from the market and it works fine. No need for the built in one.
So I have had tehtering for as long as i have had t mobile and all of a sudden today they blocked it. now what?? is it just gone or is there a way to work around it??? my phone is rooted thanks
I haven't tried tethering today but I would think if you're rooted then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Most roms come preinstalled with tethering apps and you can download them.
They CAN block it on a rooted device if they notice. Not much you can do about it.

Same question for me. I use tethering sparingly, but just got blocked today. I'm fully rooted and on cm7 rc3, using the native tethering from cm7 - and this no longer works.
So are there any 3rd party apps that will bypass the block? I tried barnacle and wifi tether for root users, but couldn't seem to get either to even connect to the computer correctly.

A quick and dirty fix that works in a pinch for t-mobile is to create a new APN and make it epc.tmobile.com, then switch to it. I tried it the other day after they started sending me to that site where they tell you to add tethering to your plan. It worked.

I've been using the app called Foxfi from the play store which has been working great for me and that's without root! There is a free version that limits the amount of time you can use it or a paid version for like 7 bucks. A little costly but I've been happy so far. Only thing is once u go into the Foxfi app and turn on mobile hot spot u will get a pop up about needing to set up through verizon, DO NOT hit cancel, instead just push your home button and wha la!! You have working mobile hotspot! Hope this helps.

Not sure. But I noticed something in SQLite.
Settings storage
settings.db
Global
51 Wifi_watchdog_on 1
I'm thinking - hoping- that that is the entitlement/subscription check. Anyone willing to find out?
Changed it to 0... Still getting Use of this service requires a subscription...
I think the Wifi Watchdog setting is to alert you when a WiFi network is in range....
I've just been using the notifications panel toggle hack, then pressing the Home button when the error comes up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2482867
Would be great to get rid of the notification though

Thanks for the heads up and trying it out. I'd change it back to 1, though. I did some searching and it seems that watchdog is a security measure to try and keep hackers from accessing your phone through wifi. So either what you were thinking is right or the info I have found is. But I'm no expert. So I don't know which it is. Lol. Either case is seems cruicial or important. So probably best to not mess with that.
I have the toggle going, also. I just figured it was worth a shot, at least. I just get a little annoyed having to press the Home button every time. But at least we have tether. I can deal with that until such time that they figure it out.
Thanks again for trying that!
I have actually investigated this a bit, and like new devices, the check is now built in Framework-res.apk. You need to decompile, edit the lines that call the command to check for subscription, and recompile. I have tried quite a few times but could never get the signing right and replace the file on the device without a bootloop, so I gave up. I think I have more specific information on like the 2nd page of the we have root thread.

yes. I would rather it be an app in the app drawer, but now it's in settings. I put a shortcut to it on my home screen with nova launcher.
This might be a stupid question, but I have unlimited data and does Verizon still charging extra for hotspot for us that have unlimited data?
You have to pay for the tethering service unless you have a hack, but I pay for the tethering service only because i dont want verzion to have an excuse to cut me off. Last month I used 122gigs.

Probably not, but I'd think you'd know whether it was before you bought it. I can't begin to guess what the issue is since you can't directly access APN settings by going to settings, and I've never seen 'Activities' or whatever it was you used to access your settings. Normally you'd go to settings and get to mobile networks from there.
I don't know anything about Sprint but if you do a little research online, I think you'll find that if Sprint users on non-LTE networks or using project Fi don't have access to edit APNs normally. You probably need to go to a Sprint forum or contact them. Good luck.
