Anyone else having this issue? Wanted to post here and ask to see if other carrier variants are having the issue as well
This happens whether I'm on wifi or on LTE/HSPA

My streams start at 480p, but automatically go to a higher quality after a few seconds. I'm not sure why you are not seeing the same behavior. I am on Sprint, btw.

Yes it happens to me too
It always starts at the lowest resolution possible and 1440p is never an option. Also is anyone else annoyed by the lack of updated apps to support the displays resolution?
I forgot to mention you must go into the YouTube options and change the display options to Auto from the default of 480p. Once you do that, you should get the behavior I described above.

The thing is I don't want to have to do that everytime.
I want the video in it's highest available form each time and that's not happening
Some videos I'll get 720p, some I'll get 480p - never do I get 1080p unless I manually choose it.
Yes, I agree. From what I have read, the reason it is setup that way is to save data usage, by default. I do hope Google gives us a toggle to allow us to set it and forget it.

Lurker turned poster.
On the Motorola Droid, there was a hack by "xeudoxus" which allowed for the YouTube app to default to High Quality playback.
Any idea if this will work on the Nexus One? I presume not since that is an Motorola phone, and this is HTC. If not, has anyone ported that over to work on the Nexus?
Thanks in advance.
(P.S. apologies if this is the wrong section. I started to make this post under "Themes and Apps," but also didn't seem right.)
I was just about to post this same topic. I'm going to try the Motorola hack today to see if it works. If not, I'd very much like to see this added to the Nexus One. The quality of YouTube videos over 3G is almost unwatchable on such a high res display.
absolutely'd love it....big case of beer to the dev that does this!
Iphone had a similar hack........loved it: 'fooled' youtube, or any app, into thinking it was on wifi
isn't the option built-in?
I always watch HQ on 3G when I want. I just click on menu, more, and then the option "play High Quality".
Works for me just fine. I don't know if there is a hack to make it default though.

Correct. Just seeing if there was a hack made for the Nexus One. The one for the Droid includes a 2.1 firmware version, but I'm unsure.
The slight disadvantage, beyond the button clicks, to that procedure is that the clip then has to rebuffer for the HQ version. At least, in my experience, anyway.
A few clips and a couple extra seconds of buffer time aren't huge things. Would just be nice to have the HQ version be default

Disruptive to have to do it with each video tho....would like it at least as a settings default option

I was referring it to a global option and not for each video you watch I knew about that but for the older youtube apps on android it was a global option.
On WiFi it defaults to high quality.

I attempted to use this this morning without much success. I believe the error had something to do with the system still being odex'd; I'm at work right now, otherwise I'd attempt again to say for sure. I'm currently running CyanoMod as my rom if that makes any difference.
Thanks for the post, though, and keep up the good work.

in the youtube app. go to settings and more. Then it says watch in high quality.
That i know, but if it has the HQ hack, can't you set HQ as default?
Here is how you hack YouTube to default into HQ:
1. Put the youtube.apk on your sdcard.
2. Get Root Explorer from the Market.
3. Using Root Explorer, navigate to the sdcard folder and long press on the youtube.apk and click "Move"
4. Navigate to the /system/app folder
5. Click the button up top that says "Remount as R/W"
6. Click the button on the bottom that says "Paste" then confirm overwrite.
7. Now you need to set the permissions on that file: Long press on the youtube.apk and click Permissions. Check User Read and Write, Group Read, and Others Read. Uncheck everything else and click Ok.
7. Click the button up top that says "Remount as R/O"
8. Reboot, you're done

Hi, I have yet to find a way to prevent the screen from powering down in my Samsung Focus. I have it set to 5 minutes but with a charger attached, I really should be able to keep the screen on if I need it... which I do.
A simple setting: "Never" would work. I am old enough to establish my battery usage
Am I missing something here? With Android, this option was available in the Development settings.
Thanks
maybe there's not an option for that yet. Just set your display settings to never and force timeout yourself by clicking the power button?
you have the option to set it to never but that option goes away when you are charging? did you set your phone up to an exchange server? i know when i did mine the never option went away.
Whoa.. where is this "Never" option you guys are referring to?
I go to Settings > Lock & Wallpaper > Screen Time Out = 5 Minutes (Which is the max setting) Other choices are 30 Sec., 1 Min and 3 Min.
Thanks for the replies!

Ouch! So that was something the manufacturers could change and Samsung screwed it up. 'Never' option makes a lot of sense.
That is deeply disappointing. Is it something that can be altered via an update?
i'm afraid i have to disagree... i have a HTC 7 Trophy and have teh same options as listed by Frank.

samsung is making some kick ass hardware these days but still has a lot to be desired on the software front.
Maybe it will be in an update, but I doubt it.
Major oversight IMO and one that I will voice to Samsung.

Exactly! I have been looking into this more and it seems the developers can code something to prevent this from happening with their apps.
Hopefully someone will develop something to allow the screen to stay on (I will pay), or maybe one of you uber-wise experts will find a backdoor setting.

Never option is only available if you're not using a password. Turn the password option on, the never option isn't available. At least that's how it works on my Quantum.
Yesterday, after playing with Samsung "Diagnosis" software, somehow I've got "Never" option set.

That's bizarre. I have a Focus also and I never knew other phones had a Never option for screen timeout. Maybe Samsung was concerned about the Super AMOLED's effects on battery life?

Sorry, nope. But I wish so!.. For development it's very useful option. BTW, it's possible - 100% proof. So, we just need to figure out how to...
P.S. Fortunately, I also have HTC Surround handset for development (stays on forever)
P.P.S. FYI: I've played (mostly) with *#0*#...
Well thanks for the effort sensboston! Hopefully you can crack the code. FWIW I called Samsung in Canada (went nowhere) and posted the question on Samsung.com (waiting for it to get approved)
Cheers!

So, when plugging it into a monitor and only using the cable, the only options that pop up is the "Multimedia" interface where you can only listen to music or see pictures/videos stored on the phone. Has anyone found a way to do a real video out so you can display your browser or certain apps like Youtube? Or perhaps even enable Webtop so you can view it over just the simple HDMI cable. I hate to have to buy a dock just to use Webtop.

There is some value in the build.prop file that might enable this.
Look for ro.hdmi.mirror.enable=false
Change to true and reboot the phone.
See if that helps.
you need to be root of course.

Well that worked while the phone was booting. After it detects the HDMI cable it goes back to blank and then lets me choose between doing nothing and Entertainment Mode and none bring back the mirror. It was working fine tho. While it lasted...

I can't do that. While you are in Entertainment mode you can change anything on the phone or it kicks out and the screen of blank.
AFAIK the Atrix doesnt have true HDMI Mirroring, only the LG Optimus 2X has got that. I might be wrong naturally.

But the mirroring was working. Except that when it detected the HDMI quickly when I unlocked my phone it went blank and asked me what I wanted to do. Entertainment Mode or Do Nothing and none of them got me back to the mirroring. If anyone has a solution or idea, let me know. I'll test.

Yeah we need to write that down. It was working beautifully. I even so the Moto logo while it was booting and the unlock screen. As soon as I unlocked it OR it detected the HDMI cable, it kicked into another mode and overwrote that = true statement.
I will be rooting it tomorrow so I can dive in and see about getting true mirroring to work. But if we can't get it to do it, this may be a deal breaker for me. I can only assume it is possible somehow.

You can try to delete the following two lines from build.prop:
ro.hdmi.default.app=
hw.overlay.path.config=
back it up first!
Let us know if that worked.
I hope it wont cause a boot up problem (it should not but you can never know).

That doesn't do anything different. I've got it happily mirroring through the boot sequence, drawing the lockscreen and my security pattern to the TV, but just as soon as it unlocks, Moto's crapware takes over and away it goes. It never comes back until it reboots.
Forgive my relative ignorance with Android-- this is only the second one I've ever owned. Is there a way to bypass the restriction and uninstall either the Entertainment Center or the DockProvider packages? I have a hunch that it's one of those getting in the way of things, but I can't be certain.
