Looking forward to try my first android phone just bought this cheap for 190USD waiting for it to arrive, its because my iphone 4 got stolen not so long ago, the plan is to sell this phone when iphone 5 comes out unless i fall inlove with this phone.
The thing im wondering about is if i should upgrade it to a newer custom android version but would that lower the value if i want to sell it or can i undo the install of custom rom and have it fresh like im gonna get it
You got that pretty cheap. Upgrade to a custom ROM, it is especially easy with this handset und you can undo any changes you made. I give you a quick instruction on your next steps, but you can read another explaination at modaco, it is called the ultimate guide. The preinstalled Froyo-ROM is buggy, by the way so do not attempt to use it.
1. Important: If your handset does not come with a sd-card you need to install one. Otherwise you cannot install a custom ROM.
2. Install this. You just need to replace one file (backup the old one on your computer before overwriting).
3. Download a zipfile containing the ROM you want to install and place it onto your sd-card. Do not unzip it.
4. Start the phone while holding the vol+-button, you will then boot into the recovery mode you installed in step 2.
5. I saved the install-instructions in case I forget them:
7) Choose Wipe Data /Factory Reset, then go back to main menu.
8) Choose Wipe Cache Partition, then go back to main menu.
9) Go to Advanced and choose Wipe Dalvik Cache, then go back to main menu.
10) Choose Install zip from SD Card and select the ROM you have placed on the SD Card.
11) Once installed go back to the ClockworkMod main menu and choose Reboot System Now.
12) Your phone will restart and may take a fair few minutes to boot up.
13) Enjoy your new ROM.

That is it. There are a few custom ROMs, called Miui, Oxygen and void. I use Oxygen because it has the newest Gingerbread-Android 2.3.5, which saves battery and is very fast. I think that Miui also uses the newest 2.3.5 and void still uses 2.2. You can see all the features and the bugs (there are some, yes) at the ROM-threads at the android-development-section.
very tempting to install another rom since i hear the froyo is **** but..
err.. android virgin :> do i have to root the phone to install new rom and that removes the warrenty right? but i hear its possible to unroot it, is it detectable that u have messed with the software when unrooting it ?
The custom ROMs come prerooted (at least Oxygen does, read the ROM-description), no need to root it. Rooting and installing a custom ROM are both simply software-changes that you can revert, no damage done. If you reapply the firmware update provided by Huawei, it will be just like when you first started it.
Installing a custom ROM and rooting do not void your warranty. But: Rooting and a custom kernel enables for example overclocking and if you do overclock your device, Huawei might not replace it as you clearly made changes to the hardware.
tl;dr: You will be fine with the steps I provided in the last post, just do not overclock if you want to make sure your warranty still applies.

hxxp://shop.ventelo.no 1nok for phone and cheap subscription making it 1069NOK~190usd after 12months but it kinda sux and since the phone comes unlocked im just gonna throw in a good old simcard haha i have been searching the used market for a cheap phone to replace the stolen phone for about 2weeks but no good deals but then! i found this!! super happy
I suggest you choose between void, Miui and Oxygen. Just have a look at the description pages and just the one that has the most advantages for you. I use Oxygen because it has the latest Gingerbread-Android. Just try out all three.
On a side note:
I paid 150 euros for the phone here in Finland and a couple of weeks later I heard that they're giving them free for people who switch carriers. 'Was a bit disappointed then but I think overall 150 euro is a good price.

Before i start with everything XphX i want to have everything ready i simply cant find norwegian firmware on the internet thats needed when i want to reset the phone can you help me find ? or does firmware come with the box? still havnt recieved phone so idk.. hopefully it arrives soon
edit: i actually found the firmware minutes after posting this x)) nvm
edit2: can some1 confirm what XphX said about only overclocking removing warrenty? so that its 100% safe to install custom rom if i just avoid overclocking

im confused :S i read the oxygen rom and it clearly says kernel modification to boost cpu from 800mhz to 1ghz
so it breaks the warranty? dont wanna risk it as im probably gonna sell the phone in 1-3months
This ROM comes pre-overclocked, you did read correctly. You then need to install setCPU, the program that manages the speed of the processor (free on the Android Market). You then just put the slider back to 806MHz and tick the "Apply at boot"-box. That restores the original settings so the device won't be overclocked.
You cannot kill your phone if you have it on 1GHz. The cpu ist rated from 600MHz to 1GHZ (Huawei just decided to use 800). What I meant was that if you overclock it to, let's say 1.5GHz, which is very much, you probably won't get a replacement if the cpu dies.
aaaah! thanks

Hi, was the device network locked? I want to use it on Telenor.
Thanks.

Sent from my Galaxy far, far away!
Ok, i realize i have a different phone from this thread but it is close and my problems closely reflect the issues ive seen with the Galaxy S.
A little background. Im no perfect i know what im doing when it comes to rooting. I have an HTC Tbolt and rooted many of those, an older touch pro 2, and this is first time doing a samsung. I am getting the hang of ODIN (i wish everyone would just use this program instead of bouncing back and forth between heimdall and ODIn but whatever) Im liking ODIN cause it works well. I was successful at flashing a new rom into this Samsung phone. 95% of it worked, wifi i think didnt but everything else worked. While trying to fix the phones wifi somehow i have stopped the phone from booting into CMW recovery unless forced or booting into a rom. I can get into CMW but i must hold down the Vol Down button to get there, otherwise a clean basic boot takes me to the stock android system recovery screen and will not boot a rom.
I have something backwards or out of order. I am just trying to get the rom to identify the installed CMW and the installed ROM through CMW but it wont do it.
Any help would be appreciated, i dont want my GF to find out i jacked her phone lol
Which phone do you have? SGS? I can just talk about SGS+ but I guess its similiar.
Try to install CWM with Odin, normally it should replace the stock recovery (haven't heard of both running at once).
Once you have installed CWM you can install your custom ROM with CWM (look at the install instructions).
If you want to install stock ROM with Odin it will replace your CWM with stock Recovery.
Post the link of the thread/recovery you want to flash.

Its a stratosphere. Im using the root and / or stock files in the root method. I use ODIN to flash the StratCWMRecovery.tar.md5 and if i tick "reboot" then it reboots into CWM i install a rom or stock rom and it finishes. I reboot the phone and it instantly goes back to android system recovery. If you like ill make a short video to give you an idea of whats going on.
I will note that im close to making a jig but its not 100% bricked obviously. 3 button method still works (and unecessary at this point since all the phone does is go straight into the stock bootloader) and then after i install CWM i can force it in to CWM but it wont actualy boot into it.
From a programing standpoint i feel the pointers or partitions are incorrect. Its like booting a computer that has a hard drive with windows installed however getting the bios to tell it to boot from the hard drive isnt working. THats the easiest way to explain this.
One thing i want to note is the only errors i am getting are when i try to partition the SD card from CWM. I get an error saying sdparted is not found.
I am not getting a full understanding of how the root system works on this phone.
Again any help is appreciated.
Made a short video. Its uploading now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFZ5Adm5AdQ
So whatever i did i was able to fix. I think me being a very visual person and normally having access to all files i need or could use in a situation is always nice. Here, i didnt but i found them. Here's the link. Its obviously for stratosphere but i took about 10 minutes and let ODIN install all these files and it worked.
original posting but the link doesnt work for download
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11183-eh2-full-factory-odin-restore/
where i downloaded it
http://www.fileswap.com/dl/t4D235pUTO/SCH-I405.EH2_rel.md5.html
Again this is for stratosphere. Since it really helped me return to stock and allow me to re root in about 15 minutes this thread should be moved but there is no stratosphere area
Hi there,
I am fairly new in android and ask for some guidance.
After over 1.5 years of getting irritated by bloatware on my galaxy S4 GT-I9500 I started to look for how to root phone and got rid off plenty of bloatware.
Huge relief. I mean, why the hell do I need tripadvisor, help, health, googlesettings, speech and tens of other completely useless apps (for me). If I need something I want to install it by myself and don't want it to be forced onto phone which I paid from my pocket.
Now, when I last time hard reset my phone, it "kindly" upgraded all the nonsense bloatware too. Grrrrr
I looked on the forums to flash raw android stock, but there is so much info out there, that I get lost.
Could you suggest, where/how should I start. So, I want completely raw android OS, without any bloatware (if possible), on my galaxy S4 GT-I9500.
Thanks

Hi mate
There are some custom roms very close to stock where you can choose what bloatware to install for example Omega rom ...not sure if is that what you meant....
Ok, this is probably what I am looking for, thanks.
I am downloading omega room for S4. I have a follow up Q though. When I read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40243586&postcount=4 guidance to flash this ROM, it just says:
Installation Instructions:
1. Backup your device (nadroid backup, titanium backup, efs backup ... etc)
2. Copy rom to your device
3. Boot to recovery and flash Omega

What is boot to recovery, what program should I use for this? Need some details how to do this. :
I am trying to boot Omega and everything goes completely wrong
when I get this --Install /sdcard ...
I get following
footer is wrong
signature verification is wrong
Any suggestion
You dont know how to boot in recovery...and trying to boot in Omega???? How you did that ? Are you rooted, custom recovery, flasht Omega ???
I think you better read, read and read about it,unlless you want to hard brick your device.
I have experience rooting a Xoom, an Atrix, and an S3, but at the same time I usually just follow instructions to the bullet point while only vaguely understanding what I'm doing.
I got my cracked screen replaced at a non-samsung outlet yesterday which I'm pretty sure voids my warranty, and if so, I want to take advantage of that by rooting. But a lot has changed since the last time I rooted a phone - they're talking about "systemless root" and flashing an SELinux Permissive Kernel and then "Oh no wait you don't have to flash such a kernel in this new version" and I have no idea what any of that is referring to, all that stuff is new to me.
I have a Canadian Note 4 SM-N910W8 running the latest COK3 OTA update on 5.1.1. I found this rooted ROM which I'm pretty sure is the one I want, but then, it's the only one I found, if there are more or better rooted ROMs please let me know:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/snapdragon-dev/trltecan-n910w8-aoa1-stock-rooted-t3025538
The instructions for how to install it keep changing for every version though. It also says I need to start by flashing TWRP via ODIN - Okay, I've done that before, but I want to make sure I get the right one. I found a couple of sources:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/ref-stock-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2920452 - twrp-2.8.7.0-trltecan.img.tar
and:
http://galaxynote4root.com/cwmtwrp-recovery/ - openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-trltecan.img.tar
Not sure which one I should use.
All I want is to be able to edit the keyconfig files to get my USB controller working, to be able to edit system files to change the Touchwiz aggressive background app closing and allow apps to remain in memory for much longer to make it more like Windows memory management, and to be able to install Xposed modules like statusbar volume.
But I want to make sure that I'm doing everything *exactly* right, and that's why I like to ask real human beings to confirm my plan before starting. So I download one of those TWRP files, download ODIN, plug my phone into my PC, use ODIN to flash TWRP, boot into TWRP, use TWRP to wipe data, cache, dalvik, and system, and then install the rooted ROM I linked above. Have I got all that right? What's all this SELinux and systemless root stuff I keep hearing about, and why don't I need to do that anymore with the latest version of this rooted rom? Will this break any key features on my Note 4 like my spen or my external USB or my blood oxygen meter or all the cool novelty **** that Samsung Note 4 comes with?
Right here goes the rom u have is the right one for ur phone. There will be others around byt u can try that ome to start with. The twrp recovery u need is the 6th one on the list down the model numner is at the end of the file name, its the .tar file u want zip can be used also but thats using recovery to flash the rom. Using odin 3.09 latest one i think. U need to hold down volume down, home and the power to boot into download mode open idon with kies closed and end task with task manager in window.
Now whem oden starts u need to select the phone tab and choose the twrp recovery and flash that leaving everything unchecked apart from restart and reset time all others should be blank, i flashed with erase nand and nearly bricked my phone, thats one to leave for the experts lol.
Once u flashed recovery i think u need to root even though the rom is rooted rom i think it needs to be rooted before u flash the rom, not sure but its what was on the instructions i followed. If u try find a root file off here for ur phone u do same as u did flashing the recovery file and tjats it wait for phone to restart and reboot fully after flashing each recovery and root, i always do from knowimg its best ti imstall wimdows apps ome at a ti, e and reboot between the installs as less syste, errors can happen that way , well not system errors but linked dll files not been copied right and the like.
Thanks
Steve
Still need help them post back and will do my nest nut i a newb, i have an understandimg of how things work but by no means am i an expert i do what u do, i follow imstructions and learn as i go along what thimgs are and what they do, best way then u kmow what ur messing or dealing with.
U also, well i did for my 910f need to use a specific twrp or at least the latest release.
The walk throughs on most sites are all the right way to do it, just others are explained better than others and imclude other stuff if it goes wrong which believe me it can go wrong, easy as not seeimg a check box tocked or not ticked and boom paper weight lol

Okay but what about the other site I found, the XDA forum with TWRP recovery files? They seem like newer versions, but then that left me wondering if the reason the other site has older versions is because it's just outdated, or because only the older versions will work.
Thanks for all your help btw!
Your welcom, the rom you want is fine, u want to go for either of the roms version 3.21 de bloated or regula,, de bloated is where they take slot of apps by google and also carrier apps that sometimes come installed.
Steve.
My phone suddenly had a momentary display malfunction (some of the text on the screen just turned into garbled pixels) and then entered into a boot loop. I didn't make any changes or updates to the phone recently. It no longer boots normally - just the Samsung logo and some of the Verizon logo animation, then it reboots and starts again. How do I pull my user data off (photos mainly) before trying a factory reset? The phone is totally stock. I haven't unlocked it, rooted it, or installed any custom recovery/ROM/bootloader/whatever. (I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't, haha.) The touchscreen is fully functional. I'm sure this has been covered here before, but I haven't found anything that totally explains how to do this in this particular situation, so I'd really appreciate any help anyone can provide.
The only time I can get the phone to show up under adb devices is when I boot it in recovery mode and select "Apply update from ADB". But it says "sideload" next to it in adb devices, and the push, pull, and shell commands return errors. I've read that this is normal. Wiping the cache partition didn't solve the boot loop problem.
If it helps, this is what the top of the recovery screen displays:
Android Recovery
Verizon/heroqltevzw/heroqltevzw
8.0.0/R16NW/G930VVRSBCTC1
user/release-keys
I'm no Android expert, clearly. I've heard it mentioned that I need to install a custom recovery in order for this to be possible. To be clear, I want to make sure I don't erase the user data before I have a chance to pull it off the phone. These are the questions that I still have after reading information elsewhere (some of which I'm just asking out of an abundance of caution):
Is it correct that I need to install a custom recovery before I can pull this data off the phone?
Do I need to have it unlocked/rooted/anything else in order to be able to install a custom recovery? Or is there anything else I should do before installing it?
Which custom recovery should I install?
Do I need a custom ROM, if that's a different thing?
Do I need a custom...bootloader, if that's also a different thing?
Should I use Odin or Samsung Smart Switch to install the custom recovery?
(Extra credit: Does it sound from my description of how the boot loop started that this phone has hardware problems and should be replaced ASAP?)
Thank you so much for any help you can provide! Any extra information beyond my questions will be very much appreciated, too, of course. You guys never cease to impress.
You have a B version bootloader like me, and so far no root/custom recovery has been made for our versions of bootloaders. If I were you, I would check if you had maybe like a previous backup, and if Google made an automatic backup of your apps and photos? If you didn't use a 3rd party backup, and if you don't want to wait, you might lose some files. I also think you might be able to flash a certain part of stock firmware to get your phone to boot again, but I'm not sure
Also, if you don't care about files that can't be get through automatic backups, might as well flash a whole stock firmware, which as far as I know, may be the easiest way to get out of one.
Please correct me if I'm wrong
Also to answer your bullet points:
1. I'm not sure if you need a custom recovery, but from my experience from a Verizon s5, that's probably a yes.
2. Since this is Verizon, you would need to unlock your bootloader in order to install a custom recovery, which in where I posted my first reply, the B version of the bootloader is still locked down without any known way to unlock it. You and me are stuck with this, as I also have the B version.
3. If the heavens line up and you somehow unlock the bootloader, try to flash a recovery Called TWRP under the name "Herolqte" (that's what I think). If that doesn't work, try to find one that works with the phone on XDA. If neither of those show up try to use another custom recovery like CWM.
4. If your trying to recover data on a phone, flashing a custom ROM is probably the last thing you want to do. A custom ROM is a modified version of Android, which may mean you'll have to format your device anyways so this is probably not what you want (even though it would be nice :[ )
5. As in post 2, all you would need to get a custom recovery is to unlock the bootloader. I'm not even sure if you CAN get a custom bootloader, as Odin won't even let me flash a stock bootloader to my phone that is the same exact Version >:[
6. You would need to use Odin if you were trying to flash something to your phone. Smart switch I think WOULD let you back up your device, but you would need to be on the home screen on your phone, which in turn, would probably need you to be out of that bootloop.
7. This is probably a software issue. If you don't care to much about the idea, try flashing some parts of a stock firmware. I was personally in a boot loop 2 days ago, but I flash a stock modem file (I think that was the second file slot from the bottom in Oden) and that got me out, but for some reason wiped my phone clean, and I'm not sure why.
Anyways. Goodluck in recovering your data. Also I'm not sure if a factory reset would even fix a boot loop
