Trying to achieve maximum audio quality from the axon 7 and was wondering what setup you guys are using?
Has anyone successfully flashed Viper4android?
What streaming services would be best to take advantage of the Built in Dac?
How do we know if the DAC is working? 0_o

So after failing on the first try I restored using the twrp backup and gave it another shot and success!
what you'll need:
1. Root and backup before doing anything (duh)
2. Then install Busy Box. Open Busy Box app and hit install on the bottom left. after it shows a successful install DON'T reboot.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en
3. Install SElinuxModeChanger. Open SElinuxModeChanger and hit Permissive option
http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=12506
4. Now install Viper4Android apk .Open Viper and you'll be prompted to install a4v driver. Click Yes and after it will say to reboot but DON'T reboot.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/ar5men9o5ar7inb/ViPER4Android_FX_v2401_A4.x-A6.x.apk
5. Open Dobly and make sure its off.
6.NOW reboot and your all set.
Everything is working nicely together Dobly and viper works just like it should.

I just got it working after reading your post. I installed it by installing busybox(I believe this is needed, but not completely sure), then setting selinux to permissive, and then installing V4A 2.4.0.1.
I can't recommend any streaming services as I only listen to music locally on my device, but I will say it sounds MUCH better than Dolby Atmos when it's properly configured. I would recommend just turning off Dolby Atmos when listening to headphones. If you're listening to the loudspeakers V4A doesn't do too much so I would leave Dolby Atmos enabled in that case.
If you want to know if V4A is working, hit the menu button in the top right corner of the screen and tap on driver status. It should say the status is normal. If driver status says abnormal then it didn't install correctly.

Installed V4A the same way you did and its working great. Only problem I'm having now is that my dolby keeps crashing when opening the app.
Is your Dolby working ok with Viper?
If so, are you able to upload a back up of your Dolby app and Dolby Service file? Mine must of got corrupted when installing Viper.

Mine is working fine. I was actually surprised it worked so flawlessly. Have you tried uninstalling it to see if Dolby started working again? Do you think having Dolby enabled/disabled when installing the V4A driver would have an effect? I can't remember if mine was on or not. I'm just trying to think of differences that could have happened between our installs.
I wouldn't mind uploading the Dolby app and Service file, but I'm not quite sure how. Do you just want the two Dolby backups from a Titanium Backup or do you need something more?

Yeah, not really sure what went wrong. Think you could be right about having it enabled when flashing Viper. I've been going at it for hours trying to get it working again lol. I've tried installing other versions of Dolby, Uninstalling Viper and wiping catch but still nothing.
If you could upload your titanium back up that would be great. It might be a unique version of Dolby that comes with our Axon's.

lol No problem man. Thanks for trying to help me out any ways. Its really not a big deal not having dolby when you have viper installed. Been messing with some Viper settings and the difference in audio is Huge.
Dolby also force closes for me after installing V4A. Kind of disappointing, as I really found the surround sound effect to be quite nice. I'll just go back to using Dolby for now.

Working fine now. Thanks!
Okay, slight problem. The HiFi toggle now has no effect in any player, even the stock one. So now I'm stuck using the Snapdragon DAC.
Can you please try to install arise sound mod 3.3 and report back if the sound is now utter perfection
Arise 3.3 working perfectly here.

Does it further improve the sound to a noticeable amount and can you still use Dolby & the hifi dac option.
Thank you for your reply btw

For me it does improve the sound noticeably. Dolby doesn't work and haven't tried the hi-fi option. From what I've gathered Dolby only works on stock music and Poweramp. Arise 3.3 works everywhere.

So, I installed arise numbers 3.5 and viper works fine (viper driver says processing: yes), but Dolby crashes every time I try to open it. Is dolby still required after viper is installed?
Has anyone tried VLC player yet? I tried it and it seems to work just fine with the Hi-Fi option and Dolby Atmos.
It has also great functionality: plays music (stereo/5.1) and video, supports subtitles, etc.
EDIT: ah, and I didn't root. Just installed the app. I can fiddle with Dolby settings while music is playing; video pauses when I open the settings while playing, but resumes after I close.

no, when you have properly set up viper, the dolby app is useless anyway
I'm tired of not being able to use the music player I've used the past couple years, plus Dolby Atmos turns on and off randomly each time I start my music player, or plug in my earbuds - sometimes from song to song....So I'm ready to bite the bullet and instal V4A or maybe even Arise 3.5?
When I do that, I understand that Dolby Atmos won't work.....But would it hurt anything if I uninstall it, or disable it, using TitaniumBackup?

I've got Dolby and V4A both working just fine. The problem with Dolby seems to happen when A4V is flashed when Dolby is active. You could try turning Dolby off and freezing it. Would also be a good idea to back up the 2 Dolby files in TitaniumBackup.
I've been having this problem a few weeks after I purchased it, I tried installing atmos dolby mod but it doesn't work, I also note that this is a problem with the included headphones only, and no, I do not want other headphones.

Does problem persists if you use other headphones? I want you to check it. Not replace it.
Try this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/p8lite/general/vol-boost-1-touch-t3464959
Recently got a US F3521 and flashed over to the Euro firmware. I've really been liking the phone but noticed today that the in-call speakerphone only uses the bottom speaker on the phone. Does anyone know how to get both speakers working or increase the volume?
Also, the audio sounds great coming from this phone in general. I just wish it could be louder...
I believed the sound from either the bottom speaker or from both speakers is decided by the applications.
In youtube & music, I have both speakers output the sound, but the top one is giving smaller volume, however, Skype can only use bottom speaker.
I also flashed a US version with Euro firmware and updated with the latest Nougot Feb update.
Hmm, on both my Z3 Compact and Z5 Compact that was the stock behavior, but by modifying mixer_paths.xml you could force louder volume overall and dual speaker use always. I never made those modifications myself, so I'm not sure, but I bet the same could be applied to the X Compact for louder audio out of both speakers.
i would give it a try, where is mixer_paths.xml hidden ?
For louder audio you can download speaker boost app from play store. Works quite well!!

You can find it in root/system/etc, and if you end up modifying the file or replacing it, you must then set permissions back to rw-r--r--
Arjun in this forum had offered to modify the file (as I'm not sure what changes to make in it), but I haven't rooted and setup my new X Compact yet to pull the file and upload it:

Hi, I'm from Europe and yesterday I received my brand new A2017G. It's on B09 software version and OTA isnt finding anything newer. Sadly I read in many places (and tested it by myself) that only stock music player can output music to the AKM DAC. Are there any possibilities for me to achive desired result (I mean non-stock players do the same) on stock rom? I assume that I'd have to root and flash some custom rom but I would like to do it in the last resort (I use many banking apps which don't work that good with root and custom roms)
I can't hide the fact that this function is quite a dealbreaker for me. The phone is all great but if I can't use my favourite music player - for example PowerAmp, the what's the point. Stock music player is extremely lacking - and that is saying it lightly.
I have used many players which works fine (with Dolby Atmos) with the stock Rom..
Actually it's Pi music player. But you have Phonograph too and several others. Just give them a try too see it's what you want.
By the way, the last version of the stock Rom for G models is Nougat B10.

All apps can use the AKM DAC, actually. if you don't believe me go to the sound toggle and, well, toggle it a few times. Now hi-res is another matter, but I believe you are not talking about that specifically. if you are, then only Neutron and maybe those apps jlle mentioned work (i.e. not poweramp)
Just use Poweramp if you don't care about hi-res files and that stuff
The question is - I honestly don't know. I just wanted good audio quality. At first I installed poweramp, listened to some songs at the sound was decent. However when during playback I went to android settings -> sound -> headset hifi and switched between super and standard nothing happened. There was no change in music. I assume it's a setting for headphones only but I tested several pairs and nothing. But when I used stock music player I could toggle that setting with audible effect. Another thing (I guess) is Dolby icon visible when you pull down status bar. Is it the same as Dolby Atmos in sound settings? Does it works when using phone's speakers only or you can use it with headphones also? Anyway, on poweramp tapping it brings no change (it won't activate) whereas in stock player it works splendidly...

It's the same and it works with the speaker or headphons. In speaker I would leave Dolby on,does it's job quite well with it but for headphones I'm turning it off to take use of the AKM dac/super mode, but to really hear a difference you've got to have a pair of high impedance headphones. Also in Poweramp there should be a setting somewhere that makes Dolby work again, but may turn poweramps equalizer off, but I don't know where/what the setting is called since I'm only using spotify atm.
F.Y.I., Poweramp only works with HIFI if you use the beta, and include a couple work-arounds in your build.prop. Not the easiest thing in the world to get running, but it sounds great once you do.
Dolby and Hi-Fi audio quality are two totally different things. Dolby is the separate audio processing software that works on both speakers and headphones, but does not get too well with Poweramp, while Hi-Fi audio is a setting for choosing which audio processor outputs when using headphones ( the integrated Snapdragon audio proc or the AKM one).
On my A2017G there is a pretty subtle, but clear difference when using Poweramp, between the two Hi-Fi settings: the Super one is a bit louder, has more bass and better soundstage. This can be changed without problems when listening to music using Poweramp.
The Dolby software, though, sometimes can be activated, but then it cannot be deactivated until I stop the music and also the interface still shows that it's deactivated, even though the sound has changed.
My recommendation is to just use the Hi-Fi thing in Settings with the PowerAmp EQ because the Dolby software is not too versatile. This sounds really nice with my headphones.

naw. It doesn't work at all. The workaround I posted just reroutes the audio path in some obscure way, and it makes sound better out of it (for some reason the equalizer makes more difference) but the sound goes into a mixer path and gets downsampled to 48k. You get to use Viper4Android and Dolby with it though.
It also kills the camera

it usually lets you change between super and standard . You should find a difference in the soundstage and better, more defined bass.
The "standard DAC" (also akm, seemingly, but powersaving-oriented) is used for the speakers, and Atmos is designed for phone speakers too. You CAN use it on headphones, but it'll give you a bunch of noise. It doesn't work with Poweramp unless you use 704 and follow my guide on how to "enable hi-fi" on it (the camera will break, you'll need to use another camera app). But it's not worth it unless you use Viper4Android

I guess I'm a little confused here. I've feel like I've had so many discussions on what actually uses the HIFI DAC on this forums (you seem to be one of the few that know we use 2 different AKMs). What procedure are you talking about though? Currently I use AINUR, which supposedly someone with an AXON worked with to get the audio down the right path, and I also use the work around to get Poweramp to use the HIFI mode. From what I heard this should output 24bit 96khz. Unless you are implying that poweramp downgrades audio then upsamples it?
In any case, all 3rd party ROMs use the HIFI DAC by default. Maybe not the full extent, but to be honest the most important thing for HIFI music is mastering. But even so, without full DAC control I still think the phone sounds much better than most others. I do want to try out that custom "ROM" though, see what the controls do.
For my ears, using the bare bones ZTE player produces better sound with headphones, but it just isn't worth dealing with the limits of that player.

The "procedure" is the workaround you use. It doesn't do what you believe. Poweramp seems to believe that it is offloading via a direct path but it is going through a mixer path. Therefore Poweramp (maybe) processes at high resolution, but it gets downgraded at the output, and you get 48kHz. If you don't believe me that the output is 48 use media.audio_flinger
Ainur has the AK4490 patch integrated. It's no use since a) stock ROMs use it (they have the switch) and b) since long ago all ROMs have integrated the AK4490 patch on them.
You can get Hi-Res on stock and custom M and N ROMs but you have to use Neutron which is horrible. Doesn't work in O ROMs at the moment
i think we had a big discussion with the 2 akm's thing before though, but someone asked ZTE and they replied that they also used the DAC that's inside the AK4961. so i dunno
All you need is this.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jetappfactory.jetaudioplus
And optionally get the AM3D plugin from within the player. It has everything you could need, even AGC. I've tried so many players and always come back to Jet. Neutron is more flawed from a user interaction perspective and I don't like it.

I usually keep the stock music app disabled but every now and then Jet gets an update so I enable and listen to stock, then listen to Jet.
Every time, Jet sounds better and I disable stock app again.
I keep Dolby Atmos turned off using BT or 3.5 jack for music and have it on with the inbuilt speakers or if playing a video whatever the audio listening device.
I've been using Gone Mad player for a while now, quite happy with it. Works great with BT in car, headphones, hirez etc.

Use Dolby plus on magisk. Set the fx curve to U shaped in custom settings. It gives some quality sound; creates depth in the audio. However, if you want headphone-like bass, its not possible on this phone due to speaker hardware.
