Replace Bixby with Google Assistant? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

And no, I do not mean to remap the button on the left hand side.
I mean just swiping left to get google instead of bixby.
it's very upsetting that there is so much lag when swiping left for bixby, my Tandy ran faster that this.
At least with retaining touchwiz, is this possible?

The only way to do this is via Google Now Launcher which is at end of life and short on features. The Google Now pane is only available through an offiical Google API which was exclusive to Google Launchers. Google has promised to open up the API.
Touchwiz absolutely cannot support this.
I am optimistic that Nova and others will be able to support true swipe right into Google Now in the near future, but they cant now. As a work around, you can use a launcher like Nova and create a screen to the left of your primary, and add the google now widget and google search bar widget. I also add google news as well. I would consider swipe to right for google now, a mandatory feature and this is close.
It is also worth noting that any touch on the google now widget or search bar widget will bring you directly into full google now. Also bixby can be remapped to go to Google Now. Between it all, the pros of Nova make it worth it to go this direction.

Here is a screenshot of my screen to the left of home using nova.

You can disable the Bixby screen, even using the stock Touchwiz launcher. I disabled it on my S8

Wow, that looks really nice.
Can I ask how you put that together in Nova?

From top to bottom;
Google search widget
Google now widget
Google news widget
What is also nice is a quick press on the search or now widget shortcuts you right into the true Google now feed.

You can also use Action Launcher 3 which just swipes in (from left) to launch Google.

Asling for how do you replace Google assistant with bixby voice? Asking for a friend.

Use bxactions. Let's you remap the bixby and volume buttons

One UI bixby disabling
In one ui samsung created the possibility to disable bixby feed, just long press on your home screen, swipe right and turn off bixby feed by switching off the control located on the upper right corner.
Nice!

some quick questions...

1. do the headphones have a Mic? and if so, does it have button(s) on it to answer/end calls? can you do voice dialing with it?
i am currently using an IPhone 3GS where i can raise/lower volume, pause/play music and call people using voice control. just curious if the stock headphones can do all of this, or failing that if any aftermarket ones are available that provide these capabilities.
2. does any sort of Palm Pre styled application switcher exist? right now i can bring up this with a long press on the home button or spreading my fingers on the home screen, curious if this functionality is available on the N1/Android because it is extremely convenient.

In standard Android long press on home brings up a grid of the 6 most recent applications. Only icons though, no live view. And no closing apps from there.
Don't know an app like the one in your screenshot. I'd surely be interested if you or someone else finds / codes one.
1. N1's earphone does have a mic, you can next/play/previous music, and answer call. U cannot volume up or down using the earphone though. Voice cannot be activated using earphone, but you could hold the search button at home page to activate it
2. The app you show is just for the visual purpose. iphone does not have multitasking like Pre or Android, so why we need that fancy card slider anyway.
You can bring up the notification bar to switch between current opening apps

i knew about the long press on the home button from playing with the Android 2.1 Emulator. but i was hoping for something more aesthetically pleasing.
and yeah, the program in my screen shot is extremely convenient and aesthetically pleasing for switching programs. but i can imagine the pull down shade at the top of the N1 probably accomplishes all the same tasks...

are you sure voice search cannot be activated? nobody has added in this capability? that's unfortunate because it is really nice to use for making calls without removing the phone from your pocket. hell, with Google navigation you could probably use it for walking directions to somewhere as well.

my 3GS can Multitask, just poorly. even with the added ram (256MB) i can only run 2-3 applications at most before experiencing crashing since the apps were not designed with backgrounding in mind (for example, to play a basic game while running pandora i have to shut down Safari completely to free up enough ram for the other two programs..)
You can scroll through the running Activities/Tasks/processes with "AppSwipe".
Can be bound to a longpress on the search soft-button. Quite customizable too.

Recent apps

Anybody managed to push a recent apps switcher to the shield and have it functional? Or is there one I just can't access built in? Like... Leanback is cool and all but it makes for a terrible recent apps switcher. Also, anybody have a tasker profile to launch an app on double tap off home our like on f2 press of keyboard or something. I'm amazed I can't find anything about this.

I was a little annoyed when I couldn't find it. It's there though. I'm using LMT Pie Controls and Nova Launcher mostly but OmniSwitcher is working too if installed as priv-app. To find the recent app switcher you need to go to Shortcuts>Activities>SystemUI>Overview.recent.RecentsActivity You can set a button on the LMT launcher to access it because its a little pointless to have to return to homescreen in order to launch it, but yea it works pretty much the same as regular

pie only. Havnt tried it with gestures and isas. I imagine it might make navigation a little more cumbersome than it already is. I forgot, that to get that shortcut to show in LMT I needed to set the button to "trigger a shortcut" and then chose "Activities" with the Nova Icon next to it then following the path i wrote earlier. I imagine that there are other apps that you can use to launch activities (AnyCut maybe) if you dont wanna install another launcher. Anyways the recents switcher is part of SystemUI so there is probably more ways to get to it and like I said OmniSwitcher working too. Screenshots...

Looking for a way to turn the screen off without hitting the power button

I am looking to add a button\widget to the homescreen that will shut the screen off. After looking for some apps I found some that will accomplish this but force a pin upon turning the screen on even if I used the fingerprint scanner. Is there such an app?
Thank you in advanced!
kernel or a rom

I use two fingers swipe down instead of double tap. You can set any gesture you want.
Roms have double tap top screen to sleep.
Everyone he already given all info needed. This is one of many reasons why I love roms. I always have a custom tile for screen off and a softkey just for screen off that way I can access it either way and not hit a button. Nexus devices have always had crappy buttons and I don't wanna mess em up by hitting them 20,000 times so thats how I get around it. Lots of great 100% stable custom roms to choose from. Pure Nexus, Chroma, RR, AICP, Aokp, the list goes on.. Nexus is the best device for roms. Cheers.

LMT Launcher supports this. Bind one of the items to key code 29 to do a screen off.
GMD GestureControl (play store) works fine (root)
Just download Nova and set a gesture, no root needed. I pinch the screen to turn it off.
Do you mean like this. Look at bottom right hand side in nav bar. No xposed. Pure stock rooted.

The Best one I've ever seen is run resurrection remix with whatever kernel, elemental is good or Franco. Then simply add an extra nav bar button. So instead I having three at the bottom I have 4. You have the back, home, and recents +power button on the far right of nav bar. A single process turn off long press and you'll get the power menu with screenshot power off and reboot and reboot to recovery that's all you want.

It's within systemui.apk. Me and @Tigerstown will be releasing a nav bar mod pack.
If you can wait 7 seconds, you can use a Tasker shortcut to set the screen time out to 7 seconds, and then restore it after it goes off.

And you can unlock the phone with fingerprint? If I lock the screen with gesture in nova I can't unlock with only fingerprint, it also requires password. To get around that you need root.

Just link the double tap gesture in Nova to screen Lock pro. It will work without root and fingerprint will still work. Been using it for months.
Screen off app with nova launcher. Set the app to the double tap gesture in Nova.

Is Full Screen Possible?

Please be kind and use easy words. I'm a noob!
I would like to ask if it is possible for the S8 to have a full screen all the time? Without the nav bars. I know they disappear with You Tube and some other apps, but can it be done as a standard setting.
I don't mind playing with settings and trying things, as long as I can use simple terms.
Thanks in advance.

This full screen is not the same as the ADB version. That fully resizes the apps. The app version just removes the status bar and nav and leaves a blank black area in most apps.
Yes, the ADB version is the truest form of full screen. Really liking it. My one gripe with on-screen buttons was that they made the actual usable screen space smaller. This way we get to maximize the entire display. Love being able to tweak our phones to our personal likes. Something much easier to do with Android, even non-rooted android, than IOS.
This is awesome but it should have been already included as a feature.

Gesture to put the phone to sleep?

The awkward position of the power button makes me miss the sleep gestures in xposed framework when I would just remap google now(don't use anyway) to sleep so I could just swipe up from home to sleep the phone to return to the pocket... Thing is I'm on Verizon and don't have root. So does anybody know of a way that something like this could be done without root? I looked all through settings and googled it but have not found anything.
Thanks

I'm using the app One Hand Operation + from the Samsung store. I have it set up so I can swipe in from the left edge to turn off the screen, even if I'm in an app. Custom launchers like Nova can also let you swipe to turn off the screen. I think there are also ways to map the Bixby button to turn off the screen as well.

You can buy Nova Launcher Prime and use double tap to put the phone to sleep. Otherwise you can simply remap the bixby button to be your power button and then you will have it closer.
Only thing is with Nova the double tap will only work if the phone is unlock, otherwise if you don't unlock it and you are still in the lockscreen you will need to press the power button.
Thanks for all of the feedback, I'm going to download One Hand Operation +. My only question about remapping the bixby button is doesnt that require root access?? I looked all over with google to see if it could be done without root and I couldn't find a way. I played around with the bixby settings to get it to run a command to sleep the phone too but that didn't work for me...
