Hello,
on my Fire HD8 2016, my Google Mail app keeps crashing all the time, does anybody know if this is related to the latest Fire OS or Gmail update? Any way to fix it?

The new Fire HD8 (2017) are also having this problem. I just noticed that Gmail on my 2016 Fire 7 has very recently stopped working too. Ggggrrrr.... It was working fine before.
(There is another thread about the 2017 Fire 8s that you might want to follow... No one has found a fix yet.)
Do you have a link to the other thread? I am very unhappy that I cannot root the Fire HD8 2016, because the device is getting slower and slower with every update, it is nearly unusable now

Just did a search for it and saw several brief mentions of the gmail Fire 8 7th generation problem mentioned, but no specific fix for it. (Sorry, I couldn't find the original mention) For what it's worth, gmail finally started working again on my Fire 8 (2017) but not yet on Fire 7 (2016) , Hoping that perhaps the gremlins are working on a fix in the background?
I have the same problem with my Kindle 8 HD (7th generation). The app is crashing as soon as it's accessing a folder or email containing a "+" sign in address.
Tried Google Inbox instead - works fine as long as not opening a mail sent to such an address (i.e. [email protected]). Opening such mail results in crashing instantly. All other mails can be opened without problems.
Because the originally installed email client always works, I'm not sure if it's a problem of Gmail or Fire OS or combination of both.
Post Preview:
I see the gmail crash issue on my 2016 HD8 6th gen when I look at a message with an attached file or embedded photo. Plain vanilla email (text) seems to work. If the suspect message is at the top of my inbox so that it opens automatically, then gmail crashes when I start it. I managed to delete the offending email in the split second before it crashed, then it stayed running until I stumbled into another "bad" message. My OS was just updated to 5.4.0.0 last week, it might be related to that update but I don't use it every day to be sure. Google inbox seems to have similar crashing issues for me.
Funnily mine crashes as soon as I open the app, so no possibility for me to even check mails at all.
I just got the Fire HD 8 (7th gen, 2017) and ran into this issue too. A logcat when launching Gmail (7.6.18.160170480) shows:

To my understanding the ACCESS_ALL_DOWNLOADS permission can only be granted to apps with the same signature as DownloadProvider. I don't know if this has anything to do with Amazon's customization of Android 5.1.1, but I wouldn't be surprised. I welcome someone more familiar with Android permissions to evaluate the log.

Thanks trovatrice,
I was going to say the same about the Fire HD 8 (7th generation - 2017) on Fire OS 5.3.3.0.
Happy to follow your link.
cheers
This problem is happening because Gmail tries to automatically download the attachments and the permissions in fireos prevent it. A workaround is to disconnect the WiFi, open Gmail (shouldn't crash without internet) and disable the automatic download of attachments in its settings. After this you should be able to use the app without crashes, if you need attachments just save them to Google Drive without downloading them directly.
@Segfaultd - Thanks for the tip. I think you're on to something. Disabling the internet connection does allow Gmail to run without crashing, and I can go into Settings and deselect the option to automatically download attachments. Unfortunately, once I re-enable the internet, Gmail goes back to crashing.
Any other ideas? This is really frustrating!
This happened to me. I fixed it on my Fire HD8 2017 simply by clearing the app from the recent apps menu (square in the bottom right) and then reloading it.

Same here, in Airplane Mode I can run Gmail, can disable automatic attachment download, also set Images to "Ask before showing". But once internet is re-enabled, also crash is back. An update seems at least to work, i.e., those emails which I deleted while no internet connection, are really deleted from the inbox.
Any solution would be very, very welcome. Otherwise loving my new Fire HD 8.

Thanks, unfortunately this didn't fix it for me, disabled automatic download of attachments, but as soon as I sync Gmail again, the app still closes. Any other settings that need to be altered?
Solved- Gmail disappears on Fire tablet
I just got my first Fire Tablet (HD8 Gen 7) from Amamzon Prime day and am new to Fire as well as Android. I've had iPhone and Windows PCs for years. I am an IT Tech as well. But I had the same problem with the Gmail app disappearing. After searching many posts with nothing fixing the problem, I decided to think out side the box a little. I had found posts about a similar problem, "Play store apps stop working after Alexa update". I figured my new HD8 was essentially in the same situation since it came with Alexa and I had installed the 4 recommeded apk files needed to hack it so I could access the Google Play Store.
So, I decided to try the (after Alexa update) fix which has you install 2 updates.
(Darn... Since I'm a new user here, it says I can't post a link. So search google for "how-to-fix-google-play-on-fire-tablets-after-update". Go to the first result and use the 2 links at bottom of the page.)
Install Google Account Manager 5.1-1743759.
Install Google Services Framework 5.1-1743759.
Restart tablet.
That's what I did. But the problem still existed. So I uninstalled the Gmail app and went back to Google Play Store and reinstalled the same Gmail app. And now it's working. Let me know if this works for you as well.

Thank you. That did help. Gmail now stays lit, and seems to be syncing new messages, but it's still not quite right. When I tried to send myself a test message, it crashed again (even after a reboot).
For me, disabling Sync under the Gmail account settings and automatic attachment downloads seems to have worked. I can send email and open emails with attachments. Be sure to restart the app too after making the change.
Only downside is they don't automatically download, but at least it doesn't crash for me.

It really is frustrating! and way too quirky to figure out how to fetch new messages, and then how to send a reply... Gggrrrr.

Somewhat to be expected when the Fire tablets don't officially support GAPPS.
same issue here with a 8 HD and 5.4 ; turning off sync attachments and removing/reinstalling hasn't fixed it.

I have tried rooting my NST using TouchNooter 1.11.20 following instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343143
But, I do not see YouTube app or anyhing like that. There is Gmail, but no YouTube, where I should sign in.
What am I missing?
Nevermind, I found the YouTube app, but I still cannot get Market working -I am getting "A server error has occured" message. YT and Gmail work.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

If you check in on the TouchNooter 1.11.20 thread over in the development forum, you'll see that this seems to be a common problem. It appears based on those postings that the Market app will start working after a certain time (overnight?), assuming everything else is correct.
I've discovered that you can get into the Market without waiting by adding a SECOND account. (In Gmail, click into the settings from ButtonSavior, then click accounts, and there'll be a button to add one.)
I discovered this by accident trying to set things up for my wife. I thought there was a problem because she did not have a Youtube account set up through her Google Apps account. So I went ahead & added my account to the NST to make sure the rooting process had worked, and lo and behold there was the Market. Now I needed to figure out how to delete my account (which I still haven't figured out how to do!), but in the process of researching that, I ran across this business with a delay for the market to start working.
I then wiped out my NST and went back to the backup I made before I started all this (version 1.1) so I could try again with a different account.. and a third time too, just to make sure with a different order of accounts. It was consistent: the first account gives the "server error" message when opening Market; the second goes right in.
Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of one of the accounts that's set up. Anybody know that one? If the "Accounts & Sync" setting I'm used to in stock Android is there, it's well-hidden. (For that matter I'd like to get rid of Gmail... or at least not have it auto-sync.)
Slartiwhatever,
thanks for your comment, registering second account and syncing it fixed my problem too! I do not really mind having two accounts set up, so this works well enough for me.
THIS METHOD IS BUGGY. USE IT WISELY!
Thanks for jan.nowak, and after doing some research, all Google features are working perfectly.
Here is the walkthrough:
0. Boot your device to home screen. If you are using ADB to install, make sure you enabled USB Debugging in Developer Settings.
0a. (Optional) Use ADB from your PC or download APK files to your phone and install.
1. Check the Android version. My version is 7.1.1 (I don't see any difference on this at the moment) [REMEMBER: ONLY INSTALL THE APK THAT MATCHES YOUR ANDROID VERSION!].
2. Download and install Google Services Framework from APKMirror. Make sure you download noarch Android 7.1+ nodpi.
3. Download and install Google Play services from APKMirror. Make sure you download arm64 + arm Android 6.0+ nodpi [Version I used: 12.5.20 (040400-189423146)].
4. Download and install Google Account Manager from APKMirror. Make sure you download noarch Android 6.0+ nodpi.
5. Download and install Google Play services from APKMirror. Just get the latest, but not targeted for 8.0+.
6. Download and install Google Contacts Sync from APKMirror. There should be only one for 7.1.1 version.
7. Reboot your device. Then try to add Google account in the Account settings. It might have sync issue, but few times rebooting and checking out Contact app, it should sync your contact.
Troubleshooting:
1. The contact sync is a bit weird, try to disable/enable the sync options in Account settings and check your Contact app.
2. Gmail should work now, if it doesn't work, try to run
Code:
adb logcat *:E
and see whats the error just after GMail error. If you see j
Code:
ava.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: dlopen failed: "/data/app/com.google.android.gms-1/lib/arm/libgmscore.so" is 32-bit instead of 64-bit
that means you have installed the wrong Google Play Services. Please install arm64+arm version.
How about Google Calendar? I'm unable to sync it. Solutions?
Other apps for e-ink?
I have other issue with phone. I wonder if you found some solutions to those:
1. It seems system it kills an app after a day of inactivity. There is one option that tries to save energy, so puts an app into after roughly 5 minutes after locking the device. Kind of annoying because it was killing massenger/whatsapp's calls. I've managed to switch that off in settings. However, it seems that it still can put WhatsApp into sleep after a day of inactivity. Do you know how to keep apps alive - so, I don't have to check WhatsApp - just in case it was put to sleep.
Off topic:
2. What apps support e-ink display? I can use Kindle for it - which is great - but it would be nice to use more than one app. I use from time to time trick posted by ian.nowak - to use "mirror mode" into e-ink. But it works until you lock the device. So, maybe you can advice e-ink friendly apps. Any tip or trick will be greatly appreciated.
What doesn't work still - the most important dysfunctions:
- email push notifications,
- messenger notifications (and probably notifications from most "push applications"),
- autostart of some apps,
- SMS quite often do not reach my phone.

I see a constant issue with google, the play service is unstable, might be related to the kernel or auto-killing problem. As i do not own the phone, i cant test it very often. Try to reboot the phone might help

- Autostart of app during boot, might need more test first, but seems has no issue woth whatsapp.
- gmail confirmed no issue. Check settings does it has any sync issue, logcat should help a bit.
- sms/messenger/email should be related to the previous issue.

1. Might have a look when have a time. Seems it has a auto-killing issue or disconnection after time.
2. Well, this is weird as they do not create a lot of apps that support e-ink, seems you can only read ebooks and news with official provided apps only. Although i am native chinese, i still dont find them very useful at all. Sadly speaking, the major usage of the screen is just the wallpaper.

Gmail settings checked triple times. All are ON. After some times You could not even force sync from accounts settings.
SMS I don't see much relations (no sync options, not related (directly) with Google services).
im having the same issue with the google calendar syncing. Any ideas?
anybody have any insight on this? I have my buddies yotaphone 3 and it wont sync the calendar :/
Yesterday i noticed that for some reason my Google account got unlinked from my Google Play Apps, so i couldn't use any of the Google related stuff. When i tried to re-link/login i got the message "There was a Problem communicating with the Google Servers - Try again later"
So i started scouring the Internet for fixes, of which there are a few but rarely are they applicable to FireOS and they basicly all boil down to "reboot, wipe cache, delete data, reinstall" and so on. Evantually i ended up doing a Factory reset but that made it only worse since now all my Apps are gone except for the ones from the Amazon Store which got saved in the recovery. I reinstalled the Google Play APKs and got again that same error message so i tried creating a new account which went kinda okay until it came to the final login, again that error, however once i closed the Google settings a pop-up offered me to login via Browser and that worked for whatever reason, so at least i got access to the Google Play Store again, but with no access to my App Library. Even more curious, occasionally Google picks up on my Login attempts and i get e-mails with "security warnings" about a new device. Using other devices i can login to Google just fine btw.
Currently i have 3 Theories as to what happened:
1. It just happened randomly, as it appearantly sometimes happens with Android if the Internet is to be believed.
2. A sneaky Update changed something and now the Google Login Auth on my Fire clashes with whatever updated, i assume that based on what is currently happening with the Amazon Netflix App and Google Play.
3. A few days ago i installed WhatsApp (sadly a necessity since it stopped supporting Windows Phone and there are People i need to communicate with via WA) and since Google Play stopped working "shortly" after i'm inclined to assume a correlation. Ironically WhatsApp doesn't work anymore after the reset, it now got connection problems too.
At this point i've pretty much tried all fixes, applicable to FireOS, i could find short of rooting the Fire and modifying the "hosts" file, though i looked at the File, using a root explorer, and it already contains what the Fix said it should contain, so i'm not sure if that would actually help.
I hope someone here has some more ideas on what i could try to get it working again, though i'm already getting used to the idea of having to Flash it in order to get Google Play working again. (kinda a feeling of excited dread and second-guessing the idea, so i'd prefer methods that aren't quite as invasive right now.)

Your Fire tablet have registered with Amazon account that causing all Google services. Try to deregister it and reset to .
Useful methods to install Google apps using Fire toolbox:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/development/official-amazon-fire-toolbox-v1-0-t3889604
Can you protect your Google account by adding phone number in Google account settings.
So i did another Factory Reset, i couldn't get around not login into my Amazon account but this time i skipped restoring the Back-up and it worked, I was able to login into my google account, though that might be because i did it via the GPlay Store which kinda looked like a Browser login, rather than via GPlay Services but it is solved regardless, at least for now. I'm going to keep an eye on it for a few days, but i hope the Problem is solved for good.
Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and have an annoying problem with the Gmail app on my Amazon Fire 10hd.
Problem: Gmail app will not download attachments.
No matter what I try, uninstalling, searching through settings, I have never managed in nearly two years, to get this app to download an attachment. I really like the Gmail app, but it is extremely frustrating to have to keep swapping to the Amazon app to retrieve attachments when using the Fire 10. I use the Gmail app on our two Samsung phones and also the laptop, without this problem, so it is indicative to the Amazon tablet. I would not want to use another app after all the years I have used Gmail.
I wonder if anyone may have a remedy for me?
Any help gratefully received.
Hi Guys
I got a Fire HD 10 (9th Gen) running the latest Fire OS 7.3.x Tablet for my daughter homeschooling and I would like to control the access to apps and activity via Google account instead of Amazon's.
I am able to install Google Account Manager, Google Framework Services, Google Play Service and Google Play Store. Now when I launch Google Play Store it asks me to log in, I used my daughter's account and it moves forward to ask for Parent to help set up the device, I then used my login as a parent and at this stage, Google Account ask for some activity monitoring etc and then get busy checking for updates. Within a minute it fails to state 'Something went wrong and I have to restart the whole process again.
Edit: If I just use my (adult) account to log in, everything works fine and I am able to setup the tablet. The problem is I do not want to login with mine but my daughter's.
Is there any fix for this?
exact same problem, a few days ago. With a Fire HD 8. I also need to set it up for a child!
Hey, did either of you by chance find a solution? I just ran into this same problem. Google Play Store lets me sign in with my account, but I'm trying to setup my kid's account on this Fire Tablet. Any advice? Thanks!!
Same. My daughter's Fire 10 HD (Fire OS 7.3.2.2) throws the ever-so-informative "Something went wrong" with her account.
I had this same issue. Once I switched it to signing in with my own Google account, it worked fine. Must be an issue with child Google accounts.
Hello, has anyone found the solution. I don't understand why it hangs. Is there a file to delete, permission to check? Thank you for your answers.
