I'm looking for a replacement for Mobile Defense since they seem to have discontinued their product. What's the best FREE app that will locate your phone, blast the ringer, remote wipe, etc...?
Thanks!
....
Lookout is a good app, if u set it up properly u wont even know its there yet, it does its job pretty well, no probs since mt4g came out, its free, but they recently added "premium" services, witch are really just to lock ur phone throught the site, ,, U can backup, locate, an keep virus free, for free though, you just cant lock it from online,.. also i doubt its a battery drainer, i still havent noticed any xtra battery loss
Thanks for the info. I'm looking to be able to remote wipe and remote lock and track the phone as well for free. Mobile Defense does all this but I don't think they're developing anymore and I heard there were issues with it on Froyo...

sometimes everything is not free. And sometimes you get what you pay for.
True, but if Mobile Defense offers all of those for free, someone else must also. I remember seeing an app that had everything for free, I just don't remember what the other app was.....
I saw this Lost Phone app. Haven't used it but it is free:
http://www.appbrain.com/app/lost-phone/com.gadgetprojects.lostphone
Wavesecure is the best!!!!!!!
When u autolock it sounds an alarm.....and when a different sim is inserted it sends text messages to numbers that u list in ur buddy list....doesn't let the person do a master reset
*Sent from my Tmobile MT4G*
When it comes to goofy apps and misc apps; free is always nice. But when it comes to security, I never compromise. Free or not, you get what you pay for.
I use the Premium version of Lookout. I used the free version for a long time and the jump was worth it.
There will always be someone who wants everything for free. Well...some things AREN'T. Get over it. Deal with it. That's the way it is.
If you want something bad enough and no-one makes it, why don't you be the first then?! Go develop a free security app that does everything you want then give it away to the rest of us who aren't complaining...

Prey
The app you're looking for is called Prey. The company's website is PreyProject.com. I tried posting links but I can't because I'm a new user.

Just to clarify, Mobile Defense has not discontinued anything as I am still happily using their product. They have simply closed their open beta period (and it has been closed for quite awhile, 6 month or so). If you got in before it closed and simply had to swap phones, they have links on their website to re-download the client as long as you have a login.
You can no longer find them via the Market due to having closed their open beta period.
Please post questions in Q&A section.

There are several threads in the MT4G area about 'lost phone' style apps. Even though you sometimes get what you pay for, I'd rather not pay the $20-$30 per year for the ability to lock and fine my phone (as both Wavesecure and Lookout would seem to require) unless there's really no other alternative.
After reading through the recommendations in all of these threads, Prey actually looks like it might be the best in terms of offering the most features in the free version. I'd be interested in hearing more of other people's thoughts and experiences in using these apps (with consideration of their respective prices).
For now, I'm going to download Prey and I'll report back later with my thoughts.
Trip report on Prey:
So I got Prey installed on both Mytouch 4G's on my account and tried it out. The free version of the app lets you specify your phone as 'lost' via a user-defined SMS, and this worked every time. Upon sending the SMS to put the phone in 'lost' mode, you can also have the app perform several actions on the phone, including sounding an alarm, displaying a user-defined alert message, and locking the phone (with the stock android locking mechanism, but a Prey specific unlock password). These actions can be modified from he Prey website control panel (even after phone is in lost mode), and are performed a frequency of between 10 and 40 minutes while the phone remains lost. You also receive an e-mail alert when your phone is put into 'lost' mode. Prey also has the option to put itself into lost mode if the sim card is replaced.
Regarding everything above, Prey seems to work great. A couple things to be aware of though: when the alarm sounds on your phone, it starts at the loudest volume but can be reduced in volume to zero with the rocker on the side of your phone even when locked. If it sounds again after the specified interval, it starts out at the loudest volume, but again can be reduced. Also, if you opt to lock your phone, then the user-defined alert message won't be displayed until the correct unlock password is entered on the device. Thus, you can't both lock your phone and display a message to the person who has it. The developers indicated that a future version of Prey may allow for an alert message to be displayed first, with a keypress then sending the phone to the lock screen. This would be a significant improvement imo, since it would be nice to display contact information for someone who may have innocently found your phone while at the same time protecting your privacy by having the phone locked down.
[[[EDIT: This paragraph no longer applies. As reported in my post (below), the developers have now fixed this problem, but I'm leaving this paragraph here as part of my original review. "Prey currently fails on the MT4G when it comes to generating reports in order to track the activities and location of your lost phone. The reports are supposed to be generated at the same frequency as the actions above (10 to 40 minute intervals) when in 'lost' mode, with the free version allowing you to have up to 10 reports on file before the newest report will replace the oldest one. However, after trying every possible setting I could think of on both the Prey side and phone side, I could never get these reports to generate on a consistent basis (success on <10% of attempts). I contacted the developers about this and other questions/concerns, and they were friendly and helpful with trying to resolve the issue. Apparently they haven't had any problems like this on their test device, but again, the reports are not reliable for the MT4G."]]]
In summary, Prey works great for being able to lock down your phone via SMS if it's lost or stolen, with an optional alert message and alarm sound. It currently does not [EDIT: DOES...the problem was fixed] work in terms of helping you find the location of your lost or stolen phone via gps/wifi, etc.
Note: Lookout does offer the ability to locate your device in the free version of that app, but does not allow wipe or lock without purchasing the premium app. Thus, perhaps using Lookout in conjunction with Prey allows the free version of each of these apps to compliment one another.
Edit: The developers of Prey continue to be very friendly and responsive. They contacted me to let me know that they are continuing to work on resolving the problem with generating reports. I'll report back when the issue is resolved.
Thanks to me if you found this review helpful : )
Update: The developers of Prey did some debugging and were able to find the problem that was keeping the location reports from being consistently generated. I tested out a fixed version on both of my Mytouch 4Gs and it now seems to be working perfectly.
Here my findings:
the reader app is a bit messed up. I have one book that does not work in black and white. Means background in black-writing in black. Very inconvenient. Spoke to someone at Amazon. That guy told me this book isnt available in black background and white type...
wt*?????
His solution was I should send back my kindle if I dont like it. WT*???
I tried a chat with Amazon, on the Amazon homepage trough my kindle fire.....
OMG----try it yourself, turn the screen...all messed up...
I am sorry, but I am really not impressed, I wanted to be...very much but I am not.
Before I forget, did anyone check the extra charges for downloading stuff from the cloud if you are NOT in the US?
Lets say I bought a book on kindle, dl-ed it. traveled abroad....bock doesnt work, I want to re download it.....and need to pay EXTRA for the DATA transfer from the cloud because I am not in the US....
Whats wrong with that guys?
Why does it cost extra?
I think the crowd here is going to worry about rooting/romming the KF before they worry about Amazon Cloud services. I hope they take care of you though.
I just tried amazon help chat and it worked fine. Even when rotating the screen. That last part has nothing to do with the fire?
Yeah, not sure one book not working for you dooms the entire device...
Lol, seriously?

This device is advertised as only shipping within the U.S., for U.S. customers.
Also, formatting is created by the publisher. Contact Amazon if you'd like to report the error.
There is a service / app (system app) called MVS and listed as com.verizon.mips.services when you do a pm list services. Under apps and notifications - show system it can only be disabled. After a short time it re-enables itself and gives back full permissions no matter if you remove them or not. So I pm uninstalled it and that sticks as the app is gone. Until reboot! Then it's back, enabled, with full permissions again. Why is that, where does it come from (I know it's Verizon) in the system so that a reboot reinstalls it with no prompting?
I know what it does. Some have said it will break wifi calling but it does not. I don't use wifi calling any longer, it's too unreliable for me, but that's beside the point. What it actually does is report back to Verizon everything you are doing on your device. When you installed an app, when you uninstalled an app, when you used an app, who you called and when you called them and everything in between including the IMEI. If you ever call tech support they will know what's on your device without asking for permission to look at it. If you disable the app they will request a code so they can look since they now can't see it.
So.. how the hell do you get rid of this spyware permanently without root? Heck, even with root! It's also one of the top apps that alarms and partial wakelocks in BBS which is how I found it. There are 2 more packages that don't seem to be causing any problems but then again I'm not sure. Does anyone know what they are and what they do? They are:
package:com.verizon.obdm_permissions
package:com.verizon.obdm
I've deleted all apps that have the word Verizon in it and have had no issues. And wifi calling still works.

Do they come back on reboot?
edit: Looks like these 3 packages are being installed via apk in the priv-app system folder and thus I think I'd need root to actually get rid of them entirely. This is a Google bought device with no connection to Verizon other than using a sim for connectivity. Will anyone else see if they have these packages installed if on a Google device with or without Verizon as a carrier? The command is:
adb shell
pm list package | grep 'verizon'
If you have them and don't want them use this command for each (one example given) and reboot. See if they come back.
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.verizon.mips.services

I have root so whatever I delete stays deleted. I don't need to use adb, just a root explorer.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help me out but it's still nice to know. I see them all in the /product/priv-app folder and obviously can't delete them. Something like this might push me to root ...eventually. I can disable the processes and even uninstall them but only until the next reboot. I wonder if every device has crap like this running even if you don't use Verizon.

Of course they do. Even unlocked phones have to connect to a carrier service.

That's not quite what I meant. If you never connected to Verizon do you still have those files and apks installed? They seem like system files delivered to a device whether or not you use Verizon. That's what I'm curious about.

I may be able to help. I have been going through HELL for 7 months... doing my own detective work and gathering info/evidence on trying to figure out/ prove how my ex (whom conned me) is committing Computer Internet and Identity Fraud therefore including Credit Card Fraud. Just moments ago I found com.verizon.obdm_permissions on my Android phone....Googled... Google lead me here. I am a creature of habit and believe i am fairly in tune with my habits/how my electronics work for my abilities (being uneducated in the way the internet works....one of his ssids to psychologically tease me was Interweb)
*I am on my father's Verizon account. He lives an hour away.
*I have my own Xfinity Account.
* My phone acts like 2 or more phones.
*Verizon says everything looks fine.
*Xfinity says everything looks fine.
*In my Google and Xfinity Account ive found that a Linux server is/has been connected to me.
* I found a coax cable that was cut (I live in an apt building) and found it connected to a splitter (fake?). Once I disconnected Comcast van (during pandemic beginning) arrived the next day. He wired the coax cable that was cut....i painted my closet....the paint spots match.
*I've had an Apple app mysteriously download even though I've never had an Apple Account nor an iPhone. Never would have caught it if I didn't download a notification saver app.
*This asshole has made comments leading me to believe he has live broadcasted me...I have never done that...i don't even like video chat...not even my mother.
*I have a FB Business page with 60,ooo followers that I had no idea I had.
*Just recently when I connect to my wifi (mobile data off) Digital Secure says 0 Apps are running on mobile data.
* at one point my IP address was in-between Pakistan and Iran.
*via FB messenger i was connected by someone who says he's a Middlesex Private Attorney-Union Devision....there is no such decision anywhere...confirmed by District Attorney's Office. I believe he is part of an Islamic group who prays on woman through social media for sex trade.
In conclusion: due to my exs actions, he has made me and my life (including my 14 and 9 year old children) a target for this sex slave trade Islamic group.
Honestly, I need help organizing my report for the FBI. I've already spoken with the Federal Trade Commission whom gave me a number to someone in my local FBI department.

ummm....ya....WTF is probably the right response...lol
In general, I am not the greatest at explaining things... lol Especially, trying to explain something im educating myself on as these strange occurrences are happening. Im better at physically showing someone while I am doing my best at explaining why I have come to these conclusions.
So, I guess, with the "WTF" reply im not fully comprehending what your WTFing about...lol Are you WTFing because its a completely messed up situation or are you WTFing because I explained in such a way that makes me look like a crazy person? Lol
Seriously, I absolutely want your honest opinion. Asking for others opnions who are more educated than I is the whole reason I registered with y'all. I absolutely know that this fraud/hacking is true. I just get confused, lost, side tracked with how he connected and getting to the main source. Im working backwards... like im starting from the top branches of a tree (clues) working my way down to find the main source. If this makes any sense at all,, its like he has a backup to a backup so he can connect in more ways than one. If your sure what I mean about something I said please please please ask me questions...fire away!
I believe we have found the solution to the Verizon services removal. Please close this thread. Thanks everyone.
MOD ACTION:
Thread closed at the request of the OP.
I received a notification yesterday, moments after I unlocked my phone, that said "You've already given your consent to the privacy items on another device". I'm a bit puzzled, because I don't have any other devices that are connected in any way to my phone, nor do I remember giving consent to anything privacy-related lately.
I was actually sent here by a reddit post, the guys there only managed to figure out that it might be a "toast" notification but when I went along and installed Nice Catch (by their recommendation) I had no toast history (I don't even know if it is able to show it after the fact). I don't really know what is going on and I'm a bit freaked out, so I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Hello - I have just used Fire Toolbox v22 to change my brand new Fire 10HD - The conversion went fine with no errors, and have managed to download and install Apps from Google play.
The only issue I have, is that not one single notification comes through from any apps at all. I have chided the device settings where they are enabled, the application settings, the launch bar and I used Nova and all show as enabled, but I dont get any Facebook, email, Text message alerts - Has anyone else seen this, or have I missed something very basic
Cheers
Stephen
Notifications not supported by fireOS...seems there is missing something deep in system. problem is still there with older versions of fire hd10
I have just contacted Amazon, after factory resetting the Tablet, installing Outlook, and finding notifications dont work in its original format. We went threw a load of diagnostic checks, and came to the conclusion its a hardware issue and they are going to send me out a new device. I explained there where hundreds of internet posts about this issue, and its more likely a FireOS issue - they didn't agree with that, and so a new device is coming tomorrow - will keep you posted.

Heres the thing - I got the new device, and initially no notifications as previous, as I expected. However a couple of days ago, I was messing about trying to get iMessages to the tablet using an app called Air Message - as Apple use their own encryption, you can't get them direct, so you have to have a Mac device running the air message software that forwards them on. This also didn't work, until I installed a service called Ngrok on the Mac that pushes the message to a Port used by air message - this worked, and then low and behold I started to get All notifications coming through from Facebook, Amazon etc You don't get pop ups like an iPhone, but you here the notification sound, and the message goes in the drop down. I can understand AirMessage needing a particular port, but why that should work for anything else, not too sure - Hope this helps
