Hello guys. I have a Galaxy S4 (TouchWiz Lollipop 5.0.1) that is rooted with KingRoot (I replaced KingRoot with SuperSU anyway), has a stock ROM, a custom kernel and TWRP recovery. I did install a custom kernel because I wanted to improve the performance and the battery life, but I noticed that even with tweaking settings a bit in STweaks , my battery life and overall performance hasn't improved. Especially the battery, it drains so fast.
My kernel is an Imperium Kernel (https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-develop/kernel-imperium-ll-kernel-v1-0-t3058867). I chose this one because it works well with stock ROM.
What I'm thinking is that I've been updating my phone from KitKat 4.2 but I've never wiped cache or factory reset anything, so maybe some "incompatibility" is causing this bad performance and battery drain?
If I wanted to factory reset my phone now from the TRWP recovery (without touching /system of course), would it cause incompatibility with the stock ROM and the custom kernel? And would it somehow help me improve my phone performance and battery duration?
Don't think so.
A custom ROM would make a true difference to general performance, but battery life may vary.
I found this ROM made by the same dev who made the kernel.
If I flash this, will it erase my current kernel?

It's still TouchWiz. TouchWiz is not known for its performance, that's why many people choose AOSP or Lineage.
@Pwnycorn , could u help me?
First of all sorry that I asked a question here but I had to do this as I wasn't answered in my thread.
I flashed a custom Kernel and now I've lost my network signals. Although my phone detects sim card as I can see contacts but I'm unable to make call? When I installed stock rom nothing happened. I tried restoring boot.img with no luck as every time my phone doesn't even boot after restoring boot.img.

Not interrupting anything, as Pwnycorn already answered your question, just wanted to say that cross posting is forbidden here and against XDA Rulez.
Thanks in advance

Of course it would! They are for different Android versions; it's like trying to put a cube into a triangle shaped hole.

I have a question for y'all experts lol :silly: i got my nexus 4 over the weekend and am already rooted with SuperSU, and am running TWRP as my recovery. the problem I am having is with flashing roms/radios. I tried installing toasted marshmallow (here) and had the following problems. after running the awesome wipe script, I flashed the rom followed by infernogapps and rebooted. After waiting about half an hour, the phone was still at the bootup animation. So I shut the phone off restored to the stock image and tried to find out what I was doing wrong. I saw something about 4.2.2 radios and tried to flash the fko1/fko2 radios prior to reflashing. the flash came up FAILED, saying that there was no md5sum and there was an error within the samsung packages? i tried to reflash the rom anyway, once again with no success. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HELPFUL as I would really like to try out this rom. I'm not new to rooting or flashing roms or anything, however I am no expert and this is my first time attempting to flash roms to this particular device.

Now if i wanted to revert to a rom that is based on 4.2.1, would these radios cause issues? If so could you link me to radios that would work? Thanks

HI
Somebody here can help me , i want to remove twrp ,and get back my stock recovery. How do i do that?
And if i flash the stock rom does it come with the kernel .
Flash the stock ROM, update.
This will return you to stock recovery and stock kernel, and if you are on the stock ROM now (not a custom ROM) you will not have to do a full wipe. SO you can keep your apps/settings/data
Thats easy thanks

Yes, it is quite easy.
Do your homework though, because you can just as easily brick your phone.

If you're looking at flashing only the kernel, you might check out this post. Be careful with this, though - if you do this method wrong, it is possible to hard-brick your device. Also, it's for the AT&T S4 only.
I currently have a brand new Canadian S4 with the MDJ firmware/baseband version.
Most of the roms are MDL based.
Do i have to change the base firmware/baseband to MDL before flashing and MDL rom ?
My goad is to install CleanRom wich is MDL based.
Thanks for the guidance.

You can just flash the ROM. Just make a Nandroid backup first. Some ROM's come with a custom kernel and you may need to flash a Canadian kernel directly after flashing the ROM.

I did get the original Kernel file for my cell provider. It is a TAR file with boot.img into it.
What is the easyest way to apply it after flashing the Rom in TWRP ?
Thanks

TARs are flashed with Odin or Mobile Odin.

If you are flashing the STOCK firmware for your specific carrier it will include the STOCK kernel.
If you are using a custom ROM like Mint Jelly or something, I'd say flash Adam kernel after flashing the ROM. You won't want to flash a STOCK kernel with a custom ROM.
Did you end up updating to MDL?
I also have the MDJ kernel and I installed CleanRom, I now cannot get wifi and TWRP will not boot in recovery mode. I thought it would be easier just to update to MDL to get wifi but mobile Odin did not work.
Thank you

No I did not,
Truthfully I am a pretty big Noob to all of this and was afraid of changing my kernel to MF3 from MDJ. I really didn't know how that would affect my phone / carrier situation here in Canada. The main problem was that I could not get the phone into recovery mode. Turns out I just needed to re-root the phone. So when I got the phone to actually go into recovery I jumped at the CM Rom. When I find a forum that helps me understand what updating my Kernel does to my phone I will try to update Kernel and go back to CleanRom. I kind of miss multiwindow.... maybe a little bit of Touchwiz...
Thanks for the reply!
EDIT : I also found this : http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=421 which is a version of CleanROM made for the MDJ but it is dated further back which threw me for a loop too.

No worries and you're very welcome! Don't sweat, I'm still on stock ROM because I'm hesitant to make the ROM dive. Don't know how or if installing MF3 kernel via custom ROM would affect the phone in terms of rooting or custom recovery either. I'd probably be sticking with MDJ build if possible.
You and me both on multiwindow! Helps a ton when it comes to referencing something while emailing/texting! I'd miss the TW camera as well ... maybe. haha
Which version of TWRP are you on? Version 2.6 has an often-experienced issue where it just hangs at the "teamwin" splash screen. Downgrading to 2.5.0.2 resolves that.
Any updates?

Hey guys,
I am also a 1337m Rogers S4 (MDJ) owner, also a noob as well. I managed to flash my phone with CM and had a pretty good AOSP experience and learned a little bit on the way. I can legitimately say that I miss a couple thing about stock / Touch wiz, mainly the multiwindow support and camera. Cyanogenmod is also acting up and drains battery pretty bad when I am roaming in the states.
What did you guys end up doing? Did you update your base-band to mdk and install CleanRom? Right now that looks like it's my goal but I truthfully have no idea how to do it.
Did you guys go back to stock after changing? Do I just find a stock ROM on the forum and use ODIN to bring it back?
Is switching roms as easy as choosing something in Goo manager or do you need to go into a recovery in recovery mode?
Thank you!
I'm currently using the i9505 GE ROM but it's causing lots of problems (random reboots, can't make phone calls) so since I am new to custom ROMs I don't know how to safely flash another rom if the one I am using now is using a different kernel. Help

For each rom has instructions on how to install
These are really basic question. You should already have know the awnser for it, before you started flashing.
Forget about kernels etc for a while. It's not important for you.
Just fully wipe and flash the rom you want with the custom recovery.

I know it's basic but I don't know where to find the answers.
So is it safe to flash the stock rom while i'm on a GE faux123 kernel?

Yes you are mixing things up.
A kernel has nothing to do with flashing roms. It doesn't matter on what kernel you are in order to flash.
So forget about kernels, it's not important for you.
Hi Guys,
As you can see, I am new to this site. My phone is S4 19505. Yesterday, I tried to root my phone and that was a succes. Problem began when I want to install kernel for longer battery life. I have installed kernel from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297379 and I have chosen Touchwiz KitKat 4.4 version. After I flashed this kernel my s4 is not starting. It just stuck at first screen "where we get first white letters samsung galaxy s4".
I have no idea what to do now.
Can anyone please help me?
Advance thanks.

twrp. I dont know what you mean by stock rom because this is my first time I did. My device is running 4.4.2. and I chose for kernel 4.4 version of tw.
I think that you have to re-flash a new rom. Then, you have to retry installing root and the kernel.

I agree with msmlz, if you have nandroid restore it or download the firmware in sammobile and reflash it and before flashing the custom kernel again, read the thread, see if someone face bootloop like you. Hope someone with experience on it could help you, I never install custom kernel, just update the last stock kernel on my rooted stock rom.
