This knowledge comes after talking to 5 different T-Mobile reps.
The steps to get the subisidized price if you are a 22+ month "good standing" customer with a Family Plan of any kind (legacy, myFaves, Even More, etc):
If you have a Family Plan (myFaves, Even More, etc.) you *must* split all the lines on the Family Plan off to individual Even More plans. T-Mobile doesn't allow one person to have multiple types of lines on the same account, and doesn't allow one person to have multiple accounts.
Wait 2-3** hours for Google's system to replicate account data from T-Mobile. **estimated
Now that all your lines are on individual plans, you can use the steps on Google's site to modify an existing individual plan and then upgrade your phone.
Once you have received and activated your new phone on your existing number, it will convert your plan to the $80/mo Even More plan.
At this point you can call T-Mobile and have them add all your lines to an Even More Family Plan (not the Even More Plus Family Plan).
And if all this fails, she gave me HTC's support phone number: 888-216-4736
UPDATE: It appears I was a bit hasty in writing my guide. The steps above actually lead you to be able to upgrade your existing line with a $150 discount on the Nexus One, dropping the price from $529 to $379. To get the $179 pricing, you must select "Add a new individual line of service with a new number to my T-Mobile account." This will add a new line to your T-Mobile account, which you can then add back to your Family Plan, and remove your old line.
UPDATE #2: Google is now issuing a $100 refund if you went through this process and bought the Nexus One using the "upgrade" option for an individual plan to get the price of $379. That brings your cost to $279. I thought Google folks were supposedly good at math? :O
UPDATE #3: After all this nonsense, I found out today from T-Mobile that step #5 DOES NOT WORK the way they told me it would. You can't just call them and have them add all your lines to a Family Plan. Doing so within 120 days of your Nexus purchase will cause you to pay an ETF to Google, equal to the price difference between the $179 price and the $529 price.
My journey:
I started with 3 lines on a MyFaves 1200 Family Plan and was paying about $190-200 a month. I split this into 3 Even More 500 lines with Android data on 2 of the lines (my wife inherited my G1). Total cost per month at this point was roughly $200 still ($49.99 x 3 plus tax). I then bought the Nexus One for $179 ($229 with tax), which added a 4th Even More line for another $80/mo. Total cost per month now at $280ish.
Now, at this point I could have cancelled one of my out-of-contract lines, saving $49.99/mo for that line, dropping the monthly down to about $240/mo for my 2 old lines + the 1 new line from Google (3 lines total).
Instead, I cancelled the Google line, dropping the monthly back down to $200/mo, retaining out-of-contract status on all 3 lines, and eating the $350 that Google will charge me now. Had I kept their line for another 120 days though, that's 4x$40=$160 to keep that subsidized price, plus I am committed for another 2 years. At the same time, we are now signed up for the Even More Family 1500 plan with unlimited text/data/tmo-to-tmo/nights&weekends.
So at this point, I have the option (if I can explain all this math to my wife), of just buying her an unsubsidized phone upgrade for her and the other person on our plan, and drop to an Even More Plus 1500 Family Plan, which would cost us $125+tax/mo, for a total of about $150/mo. So basically in a year's time, we will have saved $600 on our phone bill, and that will buy each of them a very nice phone. Wish me luck explaining this to her.
Sorry to get everyone's hopes up. I think Google has shown that they can f*ck things up as bad as any big company out there (at least on a first try). Hopefully they will learn from it, and/or HTC will get into direct handset sales instead (like they should have this time anyways).
MORAL OF THE STORY: Save your pennies and just buy the effing thing unsubsidized. That or don't have family. Your choice.
FYI- 888-216-4736 is HTC's number
Cheers,
Kermee
Good to know. Now totally worthless, as they seemed to know less about it than Google.
As much as I hope this works even though I paid full price already and have a family plan, sounds like a lot of bull**** to go through lol... honestly, i have no problem shelling out 530 for a product of high quality and to a company that isnt all "me me me" (fu apple)... I am still a part of my parents account and i know my father would not want to deal with splitting the plan then jumping through all the hoops haha so im going to suck it up...
good luck to anyone who tries this though!
Everything is correct.
One minor thing is that if you change the plan to the Even More for 39.99 and don't add SMS and Data (10.00 + 30.00) for line ordering Nexus One, you will get a different prices from the $179.99. I have heard $279.99 and other prices.
After you have received your upgrade price of $179.99 call T-mobile and have them place you on an Even More Family plan of your choice (750, 1500, Unl) The line(s) that ordered handset will require the $30.00 data for duration of contract. Good Luck.
Feel free to ask any other Q's.
If I was to buy the N1 from Google unsubsidized, is it possible for me to continue using the plan I have without having to switch to that $80 plan? I'm on the Even More Plus Family plan btw.

yes, that is the point of an unsubsidized phone, no contract binds
i am in the same exact boat as you, got a family plan, bought a phone (well worth the money) and now im happy
I went through this exact process to get the phone at $279. Make sure to remove any text or web/data addon ons on your plan as this will make the system only offer you the 379 pricing

If you buy the unsubsidized phone, you don't have to even take it to T-Mobile. You could take it to AT&T and suffer with EDGE/GPRS data speeds, or Canada on Rogers (the HSDPA frequencies are the same as TMO).
Here's how I *wish* this had been handled.
T-Mobile should have issued coupon codes to customers in good standing 22+ months, regardless of Family or Individual Plan. When they issue the coupon code, your account re-ups for 2 more years, and the coupon works on Google's site to discount $150 for upgrades. That would have solved the whole mess.

This works if the number you have doesn't have Android Data (mine did) which is required by TMO for Android phones.
You would have to go into account management and remove the stuff yourself after you told the system you're using a different handset (like the older Dash or something). Kinda like the process we used to follow to get $4.99/mo internet on the Dash.
so is it possible to skip 5 and 6 and just keep a individual plan?
because at the moment im on a family plan and are in good standing with tmo (had them since voicestream) but im moving out on my own and starting my own life since ive started college and want bills in my name on my own line.
so could i split my line from the plan upgrade it and just do the 80 dollar even more plan with them? while still getting the 179 upgrade?

I'm not sure about the 179 upgrade, but as for your family plan problem, I would suggest staying with the same account, just give the person that pays for the bill some money every month for your part of the bill. I do that with my cousin, so since our bill is $120 I only need to pay $60
family plan
idk if someone else has asked this but does anyone kno of a way to get the nexus one for 180 on tmobile on a family plan? without buying it for 500 somthing>?

first of all this is the wrong thread place. this is
nexus one android development
now to answer your question
i believe you must get the special 70$ unlimited plan to be eligible for the upgrade
Please post in the correct place. This is for development.
Mods please move thread Tehran just reg nexus thread is where this belongs on development post come here
Any way. You need to have a line that is past 24 months and out of contract. Then seperate that line from family plan. Give it 2 days to reflect and then should get that price. Family lines are not eligible at all. Info is on Google's page.
Here is my question. I current have service with VZW. There tech support has finally pi**ed me off. They refused to replace my Tour that you cant hear on every other call not to mention the horrible vibration alert. So I have decided to say BYE-BYE to big red. I have read places on the net that you should be able to by new service on T-Mo with N1 on the single plan of course. Wait a few hours and then move it to a Family plan.
Is this possible for a new customer? I prefer not to dump $530 on a phone now but will if I have to. My other option is a MT which will be no issue. A coworker says go all in with Nexus. I agree the Snapdragon processor will be the difference. Thanks for the help. Cant wait for Jan 29 to move to a real from and leave Blackberry behind. I miss my modding days with my XV6800.
This may be the wrong place but I don't know where else to turn to
We are currently on ATT switching to Verizon. Ordered the iphone through Apple for my better half. Not gonna be here for a while( interestingly at order time it was 3-4 weeks now it's 6 weeks, go figure )
This is 49.99 on Amazon right now. How do I order through Amazon and add it to the verizon plan. Can I order it as individual plan and then combine the 2 phones into 1 plan? I don't want to order individual and then have to pay penalty for "switching" plans from individual to all Family all share.
Much appreciated.
thx.
If you're adding a line to an existing family plan:
Go to the phone / carrier you want to get.
Choose "add a line" or upgrade a line if thats what you're doing.
Continue.
Amazon checkout will guide you through everything, pretty simple, just make sure you pick the right things.
Went inside best buy mobile today to pick up my pre ordered note 4, and they told me that i had to switch my plan in order to walk out with the phone! The new plan they were trying to get me on would make me pay 800$ for my note and be "off contract". In order to switch to that plan id have to cancel all 5 of my lines, with the ETF fees up in the thousands of dollars. I told him no way and that id call sprint, and ge told me that even if I call i'd still have no choice. Anyone else encounter something similar?

I had something similar happen to me today at the Sprint Store. The clerk insisted that I couldn't keep my plan. I told him to get bent. After a heated exchange, I turned on the phone, had the phone go through the automated activation process and viola, I was activated on my existing plan. He sheepishly mumbled something under his breath and I walked out with my phone.
I'm guessing they only make the sweet commission when they sign you up for a new plan.
I had trouble with keeping my plan at Best Buy as well but the Best Buy Mobile guy called Sprint. I didn't even have to push. He did that on his own. The woman at Sprint wanted to speak to me to get permission to speak with the clerk about my account. They were able to fix it so that I was able to keep my plan. It took a few minutes but didn't seem to be a problem. I have the old Everything Data 450 plan which I've had for a couple of years now. Got it with my Galaxy S3.
When I looked it up on Sprint's website a few days ago, it just said that you had to have an Everything Data plan (or some other type of plan but I can't remember the name) and it didn't specify that you had to have a higher plan. I'm glad I got to keep my plan. It's already more than I need. The plan he was looking to switch me to would've been $90 before taxes. Right now I pay $80.

I was told we could keep our current plan.

Been There Done That
I bought the Note 4 for my fiance` yesterday. We had been shopping around for phones for a while. Many of the sales rep's said the same thing, in that we had to switch plans and we could not buy the phone out right but instead had to make a $30/month payment for 24 months. This was not going to happen. I mean, what about my rebates and the 2 year contract discounts. Finally I called up the HQ corporate store in Reston VA to get the skinny on the situation. They instructed me to go to any corporate store and that they could get me the phone with my discounts and continue to use the plan I have on my phone, the S4. Long story short YES you can keep your old plan, YES you can buy the phone outright and not pay nearly $800 for the device! Now you know and anyone who says otherwise should win the employee of the month award.
PS The employees at sprint whom I have worked with at both HQ and other corporate locations are extremely knowledgeable and go out of there way to make sure you are happy with their service. One employee sat and entertained my son while the other explained how to best utilize the phones features while yet another went of to find an assortment of accessories. I felt like I was a celebrity. And they did this for every customer. It doesn't get much better than that.
Pre-order thru BB picked up yesterday no issues upgraded my line. Traded a old evo 4g got 200$ paid 123$ total for note 4. Can't beat that deal never tried or force me to change plan family 1500 here unlimited data

When I went to pre-order at BB, that's what I was told as well.. They are saying that Sprint is forcing this issue.. I pre-ordered anyway, only because I want the 200 rebate on the old phone. I figured I'd argue the point when I pick it up.
Otherwise, I would have had my phone in hand already from Sprint instead of waiting on BB.
I picked up the note4 from the sprint store yesterday and ended up going with the new plan. They spelled out the two programs and said either are available with pros and cons of both and I ended up going with the "new" plan. Did I make a mistake ? Its still unlimited data and seemed to be mostly the same ?
So now you are paying 720 for the phone... Good deal?

Maybe you have 1 line and thats how? In mine case I got 4 lines and they cannot do anything to my plan because 3 lines have no change
I had the same issue in a sprint retail store. Im going to call tomarrow to try and get the plan back because i did not take that 720 dollar plan.

the two new plans we offered now says in small writing, your plan can be throttled while watching a movie to 1 megabyte per second and people with other plans have priority over data than you do.
I tried to add a second line to my account which I have the 450 data unlimited plan and they said that they had to go into a new plan you have two phones I stated about the new rules of being throttled me act like you didn't know anything about it and would not look it up.
I don't watch alot of video over cell. So I'm fine with switching over. I can see for people who are using 10+ gigs a month that being a problem.
It's not just video. You get on the web at peak times, guess who gets bumped first. The peeps with the new plans. It might not matter to some. I live out in the boonies and have only one tower to connect to and sucks during peak. But Sprints my only choice, unless back to satillite.........NOT
I ended up getting my way by calling sprint in the best buy store to keep my existing plan, but he told me sprint was going to make me switch one way or another sooner than later.
Again that's not a bad thing. I don't get kicked off data. I just don't get priority data service. That's no different then other unlimited plans.
My data usage is somewhere between 1-2 gigs a month. I don't see it being that big of a deal. If its not your only source of net.
Plan Change
I was told by Sprint rep that I would have to change plans if I upgraded through them. One Sprint rep told me other retailers such as BB could do the upgrade without changing plans. Both BB stores I talked to confirmed this. I had no problem when getting mine.
I pre-ordered two at BB and picked them up Friday. The guy during pre-order didn't have a problem with me keeping my plan and neither did the guy I picked them up from. Seems like it is hit or miss on knowledgeable versus not knowledgeable employees in both sprint and BB. It also sounds like someone us perpetuating something false to lots of people making it worse.

I had the same issue, but at a Sprint corporate store! They kept telling me that we would have to call Sprint customer care and get their permission for us to keep our current plan (the grandfathered in 1500 Everything data plan). We called customer care from home, and they said they will put something on our account that says we wouldn't have to change our plan. When I went back to pre-order it, they told us we would have to call customer care in store in order to get this change approved. After a bunch of arguing everything was handled and I pre-ordered the phone (about 2 weeks ago). Friday comes, and that store never got the phone in. I was going out of town so I was a bit upset that I wasn't going to have my new phone. Saturday I went to a Sprint store where I was at for the weekend and they had Note 4's in-stock. While purchasing we weren't told we had to change our plan at all, and it was a very smooth process. The $80 that Samsung would send me 1-2 months from now for pre-ordering the phone was irrelevant at this point.
TLDR- One store said we had to change our plan and would not budge, Other store didn't even bring up changing our plan.
I ordered through Best Buy with the edge program, but I noticed on my email it says the total of my order is the whole $779. It almost looks like it is going to try to charge me all of it when the phone is picked up. Is this what everyone else's email says? Possibly it is just stating the total I hope.
I spent 3 hours on the phone today in my pre order nightmare. The people at Best Buy were nice and tried to help, but long story short, it is impossible to pick up a phone from best buy unless you are the Verizon account holder. Being authorized user doesn't count, nor does being a family pick up member on the best buy account. My mom is the account holder, so I have to send it to a best buy near her and she has to pick it up and ship it to me because she lives 20 hours away.
That's a sh*tty deal.
I preordered through Best Buy, but with AT&T, not Verizon. The only thing I got charged for was the tax of the phone, which worked out to be around $56. My order summary said the phone itself was $0.00 because I chose to pay for it using AT&T Next (monthly payments). That's odd that yours shows the full price...either it's a glitch or it has something to do with Verizon.

Figures, looks like I am going back to the phone.. Thanks for letting me know though! I heard from someone best buy is having problems with the Verizon edge program. Verizon users might want to check!
Delete update...
So the manager said that the 779 total is normal on the order summary. So I am going to hope he is right, and if he is wrong, it will be Best Buys mistake to fix.
I'm with Verizon and I ordered the device off contract from Best Buy, and it showed the full price. It doesn't seem like it should show the full thing on the edge program

I preordered mine unactivated at full price to keep my UDP. I chose ship to home.
The big question is if I change to ship to store will I have it sooner? It seems with ship to store I'll have it on the 11th and shipping to home I'll have to wait. Has this been the way things played out with past devices?
I wanted to order from bestbuy due to the SD card and vr headset bundle, but they only had the buy for full price or buy with 2 year contract.
On the Web site it says that they can do the edge program and my store supposedly put me on it, but like I said my Order summary seems to have me paying the full price. I talked to the corporate line today and they said it should not have the price, but should have info on the monthly payments. Has anyone else tried to preorder with the Verizon edge program through Best buy? If you have can you tell me what your email order summary says?
My girlfriends dad works at an AT&T call center and told me they started doing a BOGO deal Saturday 2/27.
I already did a pre-order at Best Buy…went back Sunday 2/28 and cancelled my order and re-placed with a BOGO. Both phones have to be on AT&T Next. The BOGO covers around $23/month for the 2nd phone and you can get either model for the 2nd phone. Best Buy also told me I’d get the free Gear VR and Micro SD card for both phones…don’t think there’s a better deal out there.

I didn't either but I definitely got the BOGO deal at BestBuy and talked to AT&T support on the phone who confirmed the BOGO deal availability. Not sure why they aren't advertising it everywhere.
Still have to pay the first 2-3 months for both phones on AT&T Next but AT&T credits the 2-3 months of payments back for the 2nd BOGO phone and then cover $23-ish per month going forward. You also have to pay the tax upfront for both phones not just 1.
Other mentions of the BOGO deal here. Wonder if you can get two $100 Target gift cards with a BOGO. That would be way better than BestBuy considering MicroSD cards are only $30 each.
I'm reading the fineprint and it doesn't seem the S7 is part of this deal...

I've searched the AT&T website a few times and can't ever find the S7 BOGO details even though I was able to order it.
From your experience have you seen AT&T not show promos like this? I'm amazed AT&T isn't running commercials about this to try and get customers to switch.
Can someone explain this to me, without me having to call AT&T. Was planing on getting the S7 anyway but might as well maybe do this. I know I will have to pay for taxes for both and I think the first 3 months. But It says I have to add a new line..Does that make it cost more monthly? I would like to just give my wife the other S7.
Thanks

As far as I know you have to add a new line. I added a line to my mobile share plan and ported my girlfriend from Verizon.
If you and your wife already have a shared plan and one of you is on month-to-month billing (No 2 year plan or AT&T Next still lingering), maybe you can have AT&T cancel that line and re-add a "new" line with the same phone number so you can get the BOGO. That's the best I got for "cheating" the system lol.
I just switched from vzw to at&t and got the bogo deal on 2 s7s and 2 edges with the unlimited plan for uverse subscribers. Only needed 3,myself, my wife and son, but with the 4th line free and 2 free phones I now get to be the douche who carries 2 phones around because why not, it was free. Wife gets an edge and son gets the s7 and I can play with both with unlimited data. Eat that Verizon!
I just spoke with at&t as I have a pre-order for s7 Edge arriving today for a new line I added. She said there was a BOGO offer between 2/23 and 2/28 (I believe) and my order was on the 26th, so I was eligible for it. However, it's too late now to take advantage of it. Even if I returned the device, there isnt a current BOGO offer on S7/S7E.
Let me know if anyone has different information, but that's what I was just told.

It must have gone past the 28th. I went to Best Buy on the 27th about an hour before they closed and asked them about the deal. They just got the email 15 minutes before I came. They were stunned I knew about it.
I did this today so it is still working, went to best buy and walked out with 2 S7's and VR headsets and everything. The actual AT&T rep was there and confirmed that the bogo worked.
I don't think this was answered:
Do you have to add a new line? My wife and I are already on AT&T, and last time we tried to open new line with old number it turned into a giant clusterbomb.
Would it work if I ported my number to Google Voice earlier in the day? That way AT&T would presumably cancel my existing line, and then I can open a new line for the free phone? Can this be avoided???

You have to add a new line, yes. if you had a line not under contract you could do a work around by porting it if you want to keep the number but I don't think google voice would work... Maybe a cheap prepaid though like tracfone?
To anyone who hasn't found anything on the BOGO deal, it's official now.

Just to make sure I understand, if I go and buy a Tracfone sim-card tonight and port my AT&T number to it, then when I go to buy my S7's on Friday I can just port the number right back and there won't be any issues and it will count as a new line?
Thanks for this thread everyone. Just called AT&T after I got my pre-order from Best Buy & got another Galaxy S7 Edge. Had to open another line but I'm thinking about doing the same thing as porting the number out then back in. Thanks
