Stuck in boot loop after applying April security updates - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to fix a Droid Turbo 2 for a coworker's son (who I'll refer to as Jim). Jim told that everything on his phone was working fine until he applied the April security updates. It has been stuck in a boot loop every since. I know that the Android 7.0 update just came out, so that may have been the update he was installing. I am able to enter the bootloader/fastboot, but that's I cannot even enter recovery mode. I have tried using the batch file method, and mfastboot method, to no avail.
This is what I see in the command prompt after anything is attempted to be written:
writing 'system'...
(bootloader) Invalid signed image
(bootloader) Preflash validation failed
FAILED (remote failure)
Anyone got any ideas?

It's the Nougat update, call Motorola/Verizon for a replacement phone. I don't think you can do much with the bootloader being locked.

[Q] Bricked by 5.1 OTA

I accepted the 5.1 OTA, it seemed to download fine, rebooted to install it, and it failed at around 20% or so with this log:
Code:
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installing update...
Verifying current system...
"/system/app/ConfigUpdater/ConfigUpdater.apk" has unexpected contents.
E:Error in cache/update.zip

Installation aborted.
Since then, that's all I get when I boot it up. I don't have ADB Debugging enabled, so I figured the easiest way to fix it was to flash back to stock, but I can't get it the bootloader to unlock. I can get to the bootloader, and fastboot recognizes it with the correct serial number, but fastboot oem unlock keeps failing with this:
Code:

I've tried all the USB ports on my computer and several different cables, but the result is the same. I've been banging my head against the wall for a couple weeks now on this, tried a couple different tools, but it all keeps failing at the same spot because the bootloader just won't unlock. Is there any hope of fixing this, or am I in the market for a new tablet?
Can you try opening ADB/Command Prompt with administrative rights and retrying the unlock of the bootloader?

All right, gave that a shot, but still getting the same results.
I had my N7 go belly up too while doing the update. What got things back to normal was to use the "flash-all.bat" file that comes with all the updates (it's in the zip file from Google. Caution!!! ****Each flash-all.bat is unique to each Android version****. Make sure you use the proper .bat file. ). First I had to go back to 4.4.4 (for some unknown reason). After that, I did the same (ran the "flash-all.bat" file that came with 5.1) and bingo, everything went fine.
I was about to toss my N7 in the garbage, but after getting this suggestion from XDA member "Fobos531", gave it it go and it worked.
Look over here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/help/thank-google-bricking-nexus-7-t3082379
Also make sure to take a look at this thread, I thought it might be relevant: http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...s-bootloader-failed-remote-invalid-state.html
phillip - Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), since I can't get the bootloader unlocked, I haven't been able to get far enough to screw it up by flashing the wrong thing. Using the flash-all.bat starts by failing to unlock the same way, then not flashing anything at all because the bootloader is still locked.
Phobos - My tablet shows 4.23 installed. Since the last successful system update was the LRX22G OTA, is it then likely I have the invalid version? And if so, any clue how I would go about fixing that with the bootloader still locked?
Maybe bootloaders can be flashed while being locked? Try flashing this one using fastboot(the link is from this site:http://www.wugfresh.com/google-changes-nakasi-and-nakasig-factory-packs/) : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934550135 Make sure the md5 checksum is valid: it has to be df53028033c9eccf4fe5ba7bc198ce24). Afterwards flash it using "fastboot flash bootloader name-of-bootloader-file.img (i think this is the right command).
Note: Everything you do, you do on your own risk.
Good luck!
EDIT: In the WugFresh page it says that your bootloader must already be unlocked, but I just don't have any idea on how to fix the adb error you are getting.

FAST BOOT WORKS
I'm not 100% sure, but you may have to use "mfastboot" which is the motorola version of fastboot. You can find it with a quick search.
So you were on 5.1 and downgraded to Kit Kat? You can't downgrade the bootloader.

I'm going to stop you right there,.
To install an OTA, you need STOCK reocvery. If you have a 3rd party recovery like TWRP or CWM, the OTA process might reboot your phone into Recovery but it will fall to install.
If you have 4.4.4 on your phone, you need to get that exact Recovery.img and flash it. You can't use a 5.1 recovery because the pre-flash validation checks that happen as part of the OTA will likely complain that its not the right version.

You can't downgrade from 4.4.4 to 4.4.2 without risking turning your phone into a brick.
What state is your phone in now? WHat bootloader version does it have on it?
If you have bootloader 30.B7, consider downloading the 4.4.4 XT1060 SBF/FXZ moto has on their web site, and visit -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/faq-how-to-prepare-ota-update-carriers-t3126425 read post 1 and 2... From Post 2, use the Requirements section, then skip to option 5 to get to stock 4.4.4. then try the OTA
ok lest start over
i was rooted with twrp
i returned to stock and flashed system and recovery from
VZW_212.56.26.ghost_verizon.Verizon.en.US
took both OTAs got onto lolipop seemd to be working
went to flash twrp it said flashed OK
but I could not boot into recovery
tried to laod a cuple differnt recoveries.
then tried to restore the whoel thing
VZW_212.56.26.ghost_verizon.Verizon.en.US
gpt failed
recovery failed
then I tried to install a recovery boot and moto boot frfom a different 5.1. ( after verifying that a couple 5.1 roms had the same size moto boot and boot) flashed but gpt is messed up and wont restore.
either I have broke it or I need a factory image from lollipop
i will try to check my boot loader version. but i bet its updated as a resultof th OTA
got twrp working
does any one have a complete nanadroid of verizon lolipop

Blur_Version.212.166.3.ghost_verizon.Verizon.en.US seems to fail.
ill try flashing system and recovery again.

How did you get TWRP working under 5.1? Someone else had similar issues here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/xt1060-recovery-5-1-t3201391
Well that was me... Eventually I got twrp working but I don't know what kind of bastard kitkat lolipop Frankenstein thing it was. Phone will not boot. It is on its way back to motorolla

Hey bud, when you say the phone won't boot do you mean you can't even boot into the bootloader, or do you mean the screen goes black after the boot animation?
If it's the latter the same thing happened to me today and I know how to fix it.
Won't boot. It went back to Motorola yesterday. Love extended warranty. Backup phone droid incredible 1 with KitKat . loving the 3g

I was asking you to clarify what you meant by "won't boot" since that could mean multiple things, but it doesn't matter if you already sent the phone back. Glad you have the extended warranty.
yes extended warranty is great.
sorry by wont boot i meant complete brick, not boot loop. no boo tlogo, no motorolla logo, no bootloader unlocked warning screen. just dark dead, as a doornail.
it wold not even get int eh boot loader.
i have never bricked a phone before. i want trying to downgrade. i have been rooting ( the hard way) since eclair on my lg ally, so not a newb.

Blasted kingroot - bricked my phone?

Ahh, hind sight is a wonderful thing.
After trying to use kingroot to get root access, it failed. And a few days later after rebooting.
I'm now stuck at bootup with Start Up Failed.
hab check failed for boot
Failed to verify hab image boot
failed to validate boot image
I've now tried lot's of different things, over the last few hours.
RSDLite (show device brings no thing up)
Unlock bootloader (request key, but error regarding OEM unlock not being set - no access to now set it LOL)
Downloaded stock X_Play_UK_Retail_XT1562_LPD23.118-10_CFC.xml.zip, and tried using various guides on fastboot but keep getting remote failed.
I'm on stock recovery (obviously still locked).
Any thoughts, or hope from anyone?
Obviously, not sure what support Motorola would provide for what is essentially my own fault?
Have you tried manually flashing each bit of the stock firmware/image. That might help. There's a good guide here which I followed to unbrick my device. Just follow the instructions http://theunlockr.com/2015/09/22/how-to-unroot-the-motorola-moto-x-play/

I think you need to unlock the bootloader and then start with the 'fastboot oem lock begin' command. You can't flash a system image with a locked bootloader. Let me know how it goes!

Have you tried any erase data commands or reset commands? Perhaps you could reset the phone so kingroot is un-installed and then try to turn on the phone. Short of that I'm stuck for ideas really, accept booting into 'fastboot and then erasing all data and factory reset in there. Let me know.

Have downloaded, and tried that - but the crux appears to be the fact that my bootloader is locked and I can't access the OEM checkbox. And therefore the tool itself can't unlock or equally install TWRP.
Unless I'm missing something in it's usage.

That really does sound like you bricked the device. If you where on lollipop software you wouldn't have the issue with check bootloader OEM unlock. If it was me I would either contact Motorola or go to a repair shop and have a motd experienced person take a look at it.
Try this, not necessary for unlock bootloader

It is definitely safe and I flashed my firmware by this but use at your own risk .

First you have to download your phone's correct firmware and extract in fastboot folder , and add my autoflasher and check your sparsechunk files number and make changes according to that in autoflasher then save ..Enter your phone in fastboot mode or in bootloader and not in stock recovery and run autoflasher.

I've ben used the latest rom so far why trying to flash (and failing) when I look at recovery I have a LPD23.118-10 number that matches to an earlier 5.1.1 rom (I had been upgraded to 6.0.1 via OTA updates) - do I therefore take that LPD ID to mean that I should actually use the 5.1.1 rom - I'm in the UK, so I'm assuming I'd use the UK one rather than Europe (I'm looking at roms on https://github.com/motoxplay/stock).
Thanks
Dooh!!
Looking back at what I was doing yesterday, within the mix of downloading various roms - appears that I was actually using the LPD23.118-10 and NOT the latest.
I figured, I'd give it one last whirl using the latest not expecting much - and hey presto, it's worked. Just in the process of resetting it all up again.
Thanks for everyone who contributed, and a lesson learnt about always rechecking what you attempt (and not to try to root if you're not 100% sure of what I'm doing)

[Q] How to find correct stock rom for my model?

I'm sorry of this is a noob question, but I found this: http: // www . filefactory . com/folder/c6cdedc45a775d27 <--- which contained a bunch of stock roms. (I'm a new user, so I can't post links; just remove the spaces)
I bricked my phone with an incompatible SuperSU (stuck on Moto boot screen), so I need to flash 6.0.1 for XT1644 (I think it's unlocked/USA variant but idk)
I tried one that I found called "XT1625-XT1644_ATHENE-RETUS_MPJ24.139-48_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml_2.zip" which said that it was 6.0.1, but when I tried to flash, it said:
Code:

sending 'partition' (32 KB)...

Apparently, I'm flashing the wrong version of the firmware, but there's like 10 pages of downloads on the filefactory link, and it takes about an hour to download each... Can anyone help me out here?
Thanks!
That firmware should be okay, however that error is normal if you're attempting to flash a build older than the build you currently have/had. I'm guessing you had either MPJ24.139-64 or Nougat on your device before? Your updated bootloader and gpt blocks any downgrades (and thus reduces the chances of bricking your device).
You may be able to flash your older firmware (and downgrading in the process) if you do not flash gpt or bootloader, omit:
Code:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
The rest of your flashing commands should be the same. Of course, verify your bootloader is unlocked (which it should be if you were flashing SuperSU), else you won't be able to downgrade.
Thanks for your quick response!! I downgraded without problem! Also rooted with a compatible SuperSU this time... Then disabled the OTA daemon, so it wouldn't auto update, and brick myself, since I'm running an earlier version of the bootloader (correct me if I'm wrong...) Thanks again! :good:

Woo, good to hear you've got your device working I think with the OTA, you should be okay as the bootloader blocked earlier attempts to downgrade and your subsequent flashes won't have affected those partitions, so it's unlikely you'll brick your device!

It's normal not to have your IMEI on stock if you've flashed Oreo ROMs before.
You can follow instructions in this thread if you want to get IMEI back.
Happy flashing!

Okay dude .... Let me explain very quickly ....
First off I bought this device like 8 months ago .... 1 week b4 I flashed customs ROM that is lineago os 15.1 which was recent for my device .... Everything was fine until yrstdy.... Yrstdy morning what I did was I planned to flash normal stock ROM to my phone .... Using some brasil version by watching YouTube ... Everything went well I was like thank god and then I inserted the sim but there was not network due to imei issue ....
This is where problem started...
Thinking after I do the OTA update security patch might go back and I might get the signal but then I did ota update and phone restarted ... It showed installing updates in half wat it suddenly switched I realised that I hard bricked my phone ...
Then searched the whole xda forums and found this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-plus/help/moto-g5-plus-hard-bricked-recognized-t3636457/page6
By Rakesh1b.....
I did the same I used potter blank flash and my phone woke up after trying it several hours....
Then when I tried to flash bootloader of moto g5 plus it showed error like I previously displayed ..... Well there was one more post for all of these 3 files, bootloader.IMG gpt.bin and recovery.IMG well I did flash all of them they seem to be worked ...
Then I tried to flash moto g5 plus twrp recovery which gave me error of failure...
Then I tried moto z2 play twrp ... God damn it got flashed and went into twrp recovery then as I studied as per @Rakesh1b ......
And now I'm stuck here ..... Not able to go front...
I get error like /cache not found when I try to flash custom os ...
What all I need now is moto g5 plus boot loader.IMG recovery.IMG gpt.bin
Of January security patch ... Mine last update was November security patch
I request some one to give those files or give a proper solution for this plzzzzzz

Thank you for the explanation, your situation seems to (mostly) make sense to me now.
You probably realize this in retrospect, but you should not have accepted an OTA on stock with no IMEI. But enough with that, what exactly do you mean by "my phone woke up"? I'd love to offer you a solution, but to find one, I'll need to know if "waking up" involved booting into Android, booting into the bootloader, or whatever.
u should unlock bootloader first.. the version of bootloader is lower than on ur phone, you should not OTA update, OTA did upgraded ur bootloader ver to latest..

THE FIRST THING U SHOULD TO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER before to try and CWM OR TWRP, custom rom..
Hey guys thanks for everyone's assistance here
i have successfully flashed Pixel experience ROM to my phone by using this procedure
1st. Blank flash your phone as per the above procedure..... (disable signature enforcement if u are using windows 10)
press and hold power button you could hear that mobile disconnects and connects once you hear that then press voldown and power with one hand and run blankflash.bat and then release those buttons before u hear them again
2nd. Flash all 3 provided files in MotoG5Plus_addison2Potter in the attachement and it will take you to the boot loader
Using these Commands:
fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
(Flash the files from provided Zip attachment)
3rd. download Moto z2 play or plus twrp recovery as i didnt have time to compress everything i cud nt provide that, then flash the custom recovery, then try to enter into recovery mod and it should enter..... if u have done 1st and 2nd step properly then u will enter into TWRP recvery mod
and here is the link for debolated ROM download version 2 which has november patch on it....
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5-...dexed-t3619972
then once ur in twrp mount it to ur pc and copy the debolate ROM to ur phone and then flash it though TWRP ....
once it is done reboot ur phone into os and it should successfully boot into ROM...
once done u can flash any custom ROM into ur phone using TWRP
But 1 major issue is that i lost 4g or VoLTE:
Can u guys please help me with that.....
