Fix root on 7.0 - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

I have a Moto G4 Plus XT1642 on Stock Android 7.0.
About a week after the 7 update had been released I unlocked the bootloder and rooted my phone. There have been crashes from time to time but they have been fixed by restoring the stock bootloader and then re-root it and use elementalx kernel. But a few days ago a crash happened when I enabled floating windows through root essentials and now it won't boot if I root it. It will still boot with and without the elementalx kernel.
What do I need to do to fix the root and why does this occur?

Did you reflash the stock ROM? Reflashing the bootloader will only get you so far, especially when messing with experimental root apps.
Better yet, I recommend flashing @tywinlannister7 's optimized stock ROM. Just flash it through TWRP, it's the 14-4 build with the March security patch and it's super fast and stable.

Now when I think about it I should probably reflash the system partition as it has many configs made to it. If I flash a rom like the lineage os one, will all my apps and data go away?

Yes. Whenever you flash a new ROM, please be sure to wipe your System,Data,Cache, and Dalvik/ART cache. You do not need to wipe your internal storage.

I fixed this rooting issue. I don't know exactly where the problem was but I cleaned the cache from within the settings app on stock 7.0 and removed any app that required root and that fixed the problem.

I just made a ROM for Boost/Sprint SM-J327P J3 Emerge that should be flashable in TWRP. I have 2 versions, One that should be Odin flashable and the other being a zip that should be easily flashed in TWRP once we work out the kinks ... I worked primarily on LG's before this and Samsungs long before that. Anyway these are the features I've added so far:
Deodexed
Pre-rooted
Deknoxed
Busybox included
init enabled
Csc debloated (not exactly sure what to remove for bloat but I need feedback on what can be kept etc...
zip aligned on boot
xposed
links coming later today....
lemme know if I missed anything!!
I need testers! Chime in if you would like to help, we have a way to unbrick easily via Odin
*Update* 7.11.17 Flashed it on my phone but may have gotten steps CONFUSED? Installs perfectly... No loops just either takes forever to load initially or hangs on my device. I got sick of waiting but I'm curious if others know, when we flash a new pre rooted stock rom do we need to wipe data, then supersu & dm verity patch? Will removing csc stuff brick this device?

I'm downloading it now, I'll flash it as soon as I'm done. I just wiped my J327P after having root, no more knox, and Xposed running smooth. It accidentally had a pocket party with my keys and some of the seedier Xposed modules one night and then after that, it was never the same. I think I pretty got no more USB besides Odin. TWRP can't even use it.
But hey, listen Sands. This better not be some bull****. Don't you ever **** me Sands. You hear me? Don't you ever **** me. :good:

DM Verity is better if you flash it before instead of after root method. Instead of flashing SuperSU use magisk because a lot of apps are starting to reject rooted devices using SuperSU. After flashing magisk, wipe cache and dalvik

Should i make a new build with magisk incorporated? I've never used it before but my lady uses snapchat and will likely need this to root hers as well. i didn't update mine but she did so has the second to newest ota build on hers, i can use her system dump for an update. Can you link me to the recommended version for ours? xposed seems ok too but seems limited. thanks for your input

Cool, so from what ive gathered so far im going to make the next rom unrooted but deodexed as as debloated as i possibly can safely and we will flash the newest MM gapps first, then dm verity and a reboot to recovery per the directions, then magisk and finally xposed and clear cache and dalvik at the end... sound about right? I did try flashing magisk on my device as is but it failed because the boot image was already patched and stock was needed instead. Is dm verity absolutely needed or could magisk accomplish in theory what our patch does?

RS988 21d OTA in the wild

I just installed it. It's about time. I was beginning to wonder if they had stopped support on the RS988. I hear the LG G5 is supposed to get Oreo, but I have a feeling that the RS988 will get left out based on how the updates have gone so far.
Hi! Has the modem changed?
I rooted my device with SuperSU and TRWP, is it advisable install this update? Won't it remove or disable the root access?

From what I know, in order to get the ota your bootloader needs to be the stock one, but I could not find it outside of full kdz packages.
I have not rooted yet waiting for this specific update (given the security fixes).
I would suggest you to backup all of your apps and settings with an app like Titanium Backup, flash stock, install the ota, reinstall TWRP, root and magisk and then restore apps and settings from the backup

The way I had to update was to flash 21a and then take OTA's up to 21d because when I flashed 21c back to stock using TWRP and tried to update it gave me an error and then rebooted and said I can't update because I had rooted the device.

The numbers are slightly different at the end compared to RS98821d , but I'm not sure what if anything might have changed.
maybe, for getting OTA should we just get unroot? How to do it properly?
If recovery is not the stock one, it will not be possible to install the OTA.
Alternatively you might need to wait for someone to make a flashable zip you could flash with TWRP, but given the fact development on this phone is not too active you might need to wait for a while before is available

I was also planning on flashing the complete 21c zip so that I could take the 21d OTA. Glad to know that might not work.
Anyone know if it would be possible to install just the stock 21c recovery image? It's my understanding that having a custom recovery installed is what makes the OTA installation fail. If TWRP is what's getting in the way of installing the OTA, wouldn't replacing TWRP with stock recovery solve the problem without touching the system? If anyone who knows more about this stuff than me could chime in, I'd appreciate it.

First I flashed the magisk uninstaller and rebooted back to recovery. Then I flashed the 21c COMPLETE ZIP and didn't flash magisk so it would replace TWRP with the stock recovery on reboot. Then I rebooted and when I tried to update it went to the stock and threw up an error then rebooted. Upon reboot it displayed a message saying that I couldn't update because my device had been rooted. So I rebooted back in to bootloader and flashed TWRP again. Then I flashed 21a COMPLETE ZIP and no magisk so that the stock recovery would replace TWRP. I rebooted and went through setup and took OTA updates until I was on 21d. Then rebooted back into bootloader and flashed TWRP. Then rooted and we've through setup. I tried every other way but this was the only way that worked for me. I hope it helps!
should be an easier way. Did u see some changes to the radio?
Some of you may remember that last year I had the misfortune of installing the Brightpoint ROM on my Unlocked G5, which completely messed the phone up by not allowing it to connect to AT&T's LTE. It was a process to re-flash the older ROMs/Bootloader and then rebuild it to a stable 21c. I had used it for a while like that, and the only problem I had was that when ending a voice call (HSPA) it would take a while to change back to LTE.
I ended up going with the S8 over the summer (Samsung discount + Note 2 trade in) which got it for $18/month. I've been using it ever since and the LTE to HSPA Voice to LTE change-off on the S8 is done within a second, unlike the G5.
My mom had been using an unlocked Samsung S5 for almost a year now, and it's constantly dropping calls, and this past week it froze on her and required a battery pull, so was thinking of having her try out my (unused) G5 to see if she liked it more. When I turned the G5 on today, I updated all the apps, and then installed the 21d OTA update. The hand-off from voice to LTE still is not as fast as my S8, but seems to be improved from the 21c firmware.

After self reboot music plays normally but if I click pause and wait until first stand by mode, the problem returns. Want to ask you guys to check if you have the same problem or I should download full version of 21d and check if the problem still exists. Thanks.

Question :: Why doesn't TWRP stick?

Hi there XDA, I've recently been having issues with custom roms and random reboots, so I decided to go back to stock. Going back to stock I used fastboot to flash the system and boot images. After some setup I wanted to get root. Instead of there being twrp I ended up with the stock recovery somehow. TWRP 3.1.1 seemed to stick, then I decided to upgrade to the most recent version. And it no longer sticks(TWRP recovery).
I just don't know what to do or what the cause for this to happen may be. My only thought is that I'll have to fastboot flash recovery every time I want to modify something.
Any way you guys would be willing to shed some light on what's going on for me???

@dirtyreturn What was said above go grab the latest magisk.zip and have ready in your storage. Then after flashing twrp head into and flash the zip. Should stick from then on I haven't had any issues.

When you flash system and boot images, root is removed. On Oreo, TWRP does not persist without root being maintained. I believe on Nougat or Marshmallow, this was not the case. When you booted into the stock rom, this restored the stock recovery.
Flash TWRP then boot directly into TWRP and flash Magisk. When installing new security patches, boot directly into TWRP and reinstall root.

Normally the way to upgrade as long as you are doing official is to download the OTA and do a local update.
Then install TWRP. I never wipe to upgrade.

No.
If you are on the stock OOS or the Beta OOS as long as you stay on the same stock or beta; you download the OTA and do a local install.
This preserves your data and you only need to install TWRP and Magisk again.
I don't understand people that whine about having to install TWRP or Magisk again since it only takes about 5 minutes to do correctly.
I just do an OTA local install and hook the phone up to my computer and re-install TWRP, etc.

Sorry, was not talking about you specifically.
Going from a custom ROM to OTA, you do need to wipe.
Going from any ROM to any other ROM, you need to wipe.
you can always "dirty flash" but there is no guarantee for wonky behavior.
On the other hand people want to take the OTA and preserve root.
Rooting take five minute so I don't understand the jumping through hooks to keep root.

If need relock bootloader to update I guess I will wait a period. (I hope we can get Android 10 update

compared to MR2, we probably will need to wait for months until razer puts the factory images on their dev-page...
I really can't understand what takes so long for that last step. Just upload that crap and you're done, razer
Can the update be flashed in TWRP without disturbing Magisk or Arter's kernel? I've grabbed the update zip via a link I found by generating a bug report in the developer options and searching for "System_Update". I'm just wondering if it's safe to flash over everything.
Don't really need to relock bootloader and such, Just flash Stock recovery and the update will go through Smoothly, and then you can Reflash your twrp/magisk.

Didn't work for me. What system mods did you have in place? Kernel, root, etc?
Peace

Did you just fastboot flash stock boot image?
Did you install f2fs.zip or any other mods?

No mods not even F2fs and Vold, for the stock boot image I simply fastboot flash it.
I flashed f2fs, wondering if that's why I can't flash update even after flashing stock kernel? ?
Peace

here's magisk patched version
to flash arter kernel you have to flash it via zip not fastboot so flash it first via fastboot and flash it again but in twrp as zip
So what I see is you can update without reloacking your bootloader by... (I'm asking if this is right)
1. Fastboot flash stock boot.img
2. Update normally
3. Reflash magisk, your custom kernel and what not.
Correct?
I've tried flashing back to stock kernel but it didn't work for me.
I usually perform the "reset to factory" task from the razer images (properly commenting the line that erases userdata)
After that you just are with original stock and you can update via OTA as usual.
