Yes, people... the NEXUS 4!
This is the first time since Qtek 2020 was released that i feel that i no longer need to use a custom rom to fully appreciate a smartphone operating system.
The nexus 4 and Android 4.2.1 is a perfect match:
- everything is speedy
- the functionality is logical
- there is finally encryption included in the operating system from the get-go.
- Updates are instant!
- No apparent bugs with radio and hardware!
I'm in love with this thingy! :victory:
How do you feel about the Nexus 4 and it's operating system, will you put in a custom ROM?
Custom kernel, yes. Custom ROM, not yet.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
already running a custom ROM, you created the thread in the wrong section bro
Not really
Do I need it? no, it does everything I need it to do perfectly. Haven't even rooted yet, but I imagine I'll break down soon and start playing.
A custom kernel may help battery life.

Ah.. should have been in the Q/A?
Felt like general was more... general.. while Q/A is like it says.. Questions and Answers.
There's no answers here, just a question.
Yes, I like the extra features of custom roms, easy as that.
Thats why its a Nexus, freedom of choice.
its a must, I haven't rooted yet to check any issues before I rely on it, you need custom roms due to the display and dpi, some of the text is too big in apps and don't provide an option so its not using the space effectively, talking about paranoid android rom
Custom kernel is necessary, the stock kernel on this phone sucks.
Custom ROM, not so much but it's nice to have all the extra features.
Transmission sent from my badass Nexus 4.
Kernel, for the moment.
the stock experience is too plain. not enough options. even worse for those coming off of a samsung device. people can talk about the stock experience all they want... but its better on the custom rom side.
As I said in the other thread I tried all the custom ROMs and none were as good as stock. No issues with the stock kernel either. The ease of trying different ROMs and the option to do what we want is awesome though.

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, stock is great. I've been spoiled rotten by all the great devs on XDA. I can't live without options.
Stock kernel does blow, though.
I did miss T9 in the dialer, but it's not a deal breaker. It's also understandable that T9 isn't in AOSP.

Custom launcher not enough then?
Damn, should have added that to the question.
What stock kernel would you recommend?
I have only used the stock kernels on all my phones unfortunately, so don't have any experience with that.

nope. you need a custom rom to edit the navbar and put the menu button back in that so many of us are used to. you also need it to toggle the navbar if you so choose. and many more things.

right now... franco is the best. its smooth, responsive, and is huge for the battery. but his r16 is having random reboot issues. he is fixing right now, once fixed you can add completely stable to the list of things. but i am on r15 and its great. best thing is get franco and do as i do... when there is an update to it... give it a bit and look at the last page of thread to see if its stable.

Thanks a lot for the answers!
Don't understand what you changed in the navbar, do you have link to such a mod?
Thanks, i'll check into the franco kernel, but does changing the kernel affect security??

it can. but i have never had any issues. unless you are in a position to worry about security... with your job, there is nothing to worry about.
edit: added pic.
and if you are in that sort of position to worry about security... the last phone you need is a nexus.
So far, still on stock ROM. If it weren't for ad-blockers requiring it, I wouldn't even have rooted it at this point. I do use Nova Launcher instead of the stock launcher, though. The only reason I might do a custom ROM is because I don't like not having 1% battery in notifications.
I feel like I need to run a custom ROM since custom ROMs have much more tweaks and features that stock does not have. CyanogenMod for example.

Should i go for an iPhone? Because the alternatives are not that great.
I'm on the fence with this device, I have a couple of questions about this one so if I could please get some help.
-Is there any ROMS out there that lets you either hide the nav bar, or change the size of it to get back some more screen size?
-With the 4.2.2 OTA update, supposedtly the LTE for T-Mobile is disbled but there is a work around for this to come back?
I appreciate the help. I'm coming from a Galaxy S2 by the way, so has anyone made this transition?
Yes to both questions...
Paranoid Rom! Or PACman both have options to hide the nav bar and use pre controls!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I never did take the 4.2.2 OTA so can't help you there. But check out Paranoid Android who are the pioneers of Pie, which expands the desktop to hide the navbar completely. There are other popular ROMs (CM from what I hear) that have adopted this. As far as shrinking or resizing the navbar, any AOKP-derivative ROM or AOKP itself have that feature.
Just take a look around the dev forums, I'm sure you know most ROMs have their features listed on the 1st page. Welcome & have fun!
EDIT: "Pioneers Of Pie", haha
Thanks for the feedback.
I'm pretty sure the newer Nexus 4's come with 4.2.2 out of the box, so the work around for LTE will have to be done. I'll check out the ROMs to see the nav bar functions.

I want the one with the little bumps! I hardly ever put my GS2 on a hard surface directly, at work I always put my phone on a sticky note. So yea, if there is an "auto hide" function for the Nav bar, similar to hiding the Start menu in windows, I'm in.

A lot of roms, if not all have the navbar auto hide, and if you don't want the navbar there at all they have pie controls so you're covered there
If you can completely get rid of the nav bar (not auto hide), how do you go back or home? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Well then forget navbar resizing and go straight for any ROM boasting Pie Controls. You get rid of the navbar and get a much slicker alternative--while I've personally been there done that & reverted to standard navbar, a lot of folks have tried Pie and never gone back
EDIT: Here's a nice huge example pic. Very aesthetically pleasing buttons that fade in with a simple thumb gesture & fade out.

You can get pie from the market. It is called LMT Launcher. As far as expanded desktop. I am not sure...

I added this in /system/buildprop. qemu.hw.mainkeys=1
Did a reboot and navbar was gone.

GMD gesture control (play store) can remove your navbar.
Also disables your wallpaper though.
Conclusion: Man up, and install a custom ROM.
Maybe because I don't like custom roms I like to keep it stock

If you like stock then you wouldn't like PIE controls. If you want custom stuff then you use a custom rom.
It really kills me when people say they want to stay stock but with customizations. These are nexus devices. All custom ROMs are just stock with built in options. Where do you think the source code comes from... *hint* it's stock source from Google.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I love how people intrude with their sarcasm.....no sh%$ its built off source code its also built off a persons own customizations on how they want things right? I want my nexus to be the way I want it to be not the way everyone else is getting it.if you are a recognized developer you would know such things, correct?you do what you want with your tab and I do what I want with mine.any questions, please pursue me at 807 kolani drive wailuku,hi 96793
I love how people post their address on an open forum saying "come fight me bro! #swag #YOLO #blahblahblahnoonereallycares."
You were given options. Take them or leave them. But for the love of the flying spaghetti monster in the sky, don't whine, complain or try to act like an Internet bada$$ when you get butt hurt from someone's response. It is childish and moronic. Either take the advice you ask for or not. But you can gtfo and do it yourself if you got a problem with people's responses.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Ugh... this is getting ugly.
podagee... you can't have it both ways... either pure stock or custom... take your pick.
My own ROM of choice has PIE/Expanded desktop options, but is reasonably close to stock in all other regards.
If you want these features, then custom is the way to go.
Rgrds,
Ged.
There is absolutely no need to install a custom rom to enjoy pie and expanded desktop.
-> First install the most recent version of LMT Launcher http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150 . Set it up any way you like and set it to autostart on boot. (Tip: make sure there is a menu button in your pie.)
-> Second edit your build prop. You can use a build prop editor, or droid edit, or es file explorer or any other text editor that can handle root files. You can find your build prop in /system/build.prop . At the end of the file insert the line qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 .
-> Reboot and it's done. This is how I used pie when I was on stock.
Now I switched to cyanogenmod, which has build in expanded desktop, so editing the build prop isn't necessary anymore. I still prefere LMT over cyanogenmod's pie though.
Nobody said anything about fighting.and BTW I asked about pie controls not Roms get it?a simple question and you guys give a stupid answer **** it close this thread, cause what I wanted was help and instead some know it all asshole jumps in with idiotic remarks.
Gedblake and westervoort thanks.simple like that is how its supposed to be not nitpick at bs.I however managed to add pie controls almost exactly like paranoid android, almost.it turned out really nice so it is possible.I don't like custom cause I've been running into issues with battery and freezes. So I am just going to remain stock, but, remember it is possible to do whatever you want, even if stock.thanks guys.

Hi, podagee...
Yeah... sorry for for the slightly irascible post. Guess it's all about relative perspective's - from my point of view, the easiest way of accomplishing your desired goal was to flash a ROM... but Westervoort knew of a way that obviated that need, which I didn't know about.
As I have said elsewhere, 'not everybody can know everything'.
Anyway, glad you found a solution (whatever that might be) that you're happy with.
Good luck...

Generally speaking, such requests belong in the Q&A forum.
That stated, I can't imagine having the nerve to ask a question that starts with the words "can someone compile a ROM..."
In a word, this request should have never been made.
As others have mentioned, it's not likely someone can build a ROM based on an operating system that has never been available with this device.

Wait, on the Pixel and Pixel XL devices? We had Marshmallow?
Yeah, there are SEVERAL xposed modules I miss very much.
They gave me options that you cannot find in any Nougat custom ROM.
I'd LOVE to see MarshMallow on Pixel but that's not going to happen.
NotifyClean and EnhancedToast are two that I miss the most, just off the top of my head.
But I had like 15-20 modules on MarshMallow and some are no longer needed but some I really miss.
I'd pay a lot of money just for NotifyClean alone. Nougat has a similar option built-in but it sucks badly in comparison to what NotifyClean can do.
I also liked the one for PlayStore that made PlayStore open directly to "my apps" instead of the main page.
App Settings, Expand Volume, Native Clipboard, CrappaLinks, APM+.
Then there were MANY modules that did clone of what custom ROM's offer. But by simply re-enabling the saved modules after clean flashing a new ROM, you saved a TON of time by not having to set each item individually in ROM settings. Like App Ops Exposed, GravityBox, Lock Screen Mods, etc.
I'd pay big money for App Settings also. Though it hasn't worked properly since Lollipop.

I mean, I love xposed, and totally see where you're coming from, but calling others idiots isn't necessary..
I understand, its frustrating when you say "I like this feature, does anyone know how to port it?" But others respond with "I never needed it, therefore you shouldn't need it."
I liked xposed because I could get all my favorite lineage/cm features on any ROM I waa on.. I haven't seen a screen off, long press volume button seek tracks app to work on nougat. Macrodroid has gotten close, but not completely there.
Believe me, I kept my oneplus 3 on marshmallow for months after nougat rolled out because xposed. And here you are nearly a year out. But I think what might be a good option as well is to make a list of modules you use, post them, and see what apps others recommend.
Figure if the need was bad enough one would figure out how to port it themselves ?

Hello all,
Have always been able to move the signal bars to the left, by all accounts it was easier when on marshmallow.
Coming from the HTC 10 I convinced Jan from team venom to see if he could move them and finally he could..
Just looking to do the same here.
Anyone know if it can be done ?,
Cheers.
It's possible. Underneath the themes and modifications, android is still the same across all devices.
The question is if anyone is willing to implement such a feature.

There's no Xposed for Nougat. Unless it released recently and passed me by without noticing.
So that option is excluded.
I don't disagree with you that it may possibly look decent. What I meant was that the demand for such a feature may be too low and developers may not find it worthwhile.
You could look for a ROM that catches your eye and ask the developer if he can do it. Or maybe some of the existing ROMs like Resurrection Remix or AICP have it already.

As I said, Xposed did not release for Nougat yet.
The reason it is available for nolimits xXx ROM is because it was compiled with Xposed.
Any Nougat ROM can have Xposed if it is compiled with it, but this requires the developer to support it, which many don't.
