I own an echo, 2 Ghomes and a V20 with Google assistant, and I think there is major room for improvement on both systems. I'm pretty excited to try a new Ai.
Well you'll have a bit of a wait since it won't have voice enabled for a while.
The hate is probably due to Samsung preventing re-mapping of the button to something else and Bixby not being ready for prime time. I believe people like choices and the option to change whatever they want since its their phone.
Because we all know it's going to suck and be useless.
I've always went in with a don't diss it till you try it attitude and I will do the same for Bixby.

Like all AI is.
"Google Assistant is so great!!!"
No, MKBHD, it isn't.
It's the fact that we're forced to use it. Sure it can probably be disabled, but there's a physical hardware button dedicated to it. If you don't like it, that button is a total waste of space that could server a relevant purpose.
Am I the only person who dosent use Google assistant? What does it do that's so special I have never used it on any of my phones

I dunno, Samsung has a ton of in home devices they could add Bixby to. I don't really see they having too much difficulty doing what google does, read apps or the first link from a web search.
Native smartthings support and Samsung SmartTVs. If they decide to release a Chromecast/FireTV streaming box. I think they will be late to the game, but have way more in home penetration.

I'm willing to try it, mainly since there's a physical button dedicated to it. However, like with all of these virtual assistants, I feel rather lukewarm about them all. Never really had a desire to try them, so kinda have to push myself to try Bixby.

Pretty sure it's the dedicated button to an app that no one it's going to use. They could have made it a power button instead
They hate it because Samsung put a dedicated button for people to use something they sunk a ton of money into, the hate really doesn't make sense. Competition is good and should be encouraged, we should be happy there are so many companies developing assistants for us to use even if some of us don't see their point.
Personally, I don't use Google Assistant or anything else. I don't see the point of talking to my phone when I have perfectly working fingers on my hands (I also don't drive.), but just because I don't use them doesn't mean I have to hate them.
That said, removing the ability to remap the button using an accessibility service was a **** move.
I would love to remap the stupid bixby button to a camera shutter function. And I dont mean launch the camera when pressed, I want the phone to take a picture when its pressed even if the screen is off. That would be an amazing rooted mod.
Yeah, that's what I want... A bunch of pictures of the inside of my pocket every time I accidentally hit that button. (That was sarcasm)
No thanks. I would hate that feature.

Honestly I prefer the on screen shutter button. I've tried settings the volume buttons to take a picture but I always find it more stable to use the on screen buttons because it doesn't involve me pushing the phone.

Havent use it so cant say if it sucks or not. But i do believe it will be more integrated then google. Its has translate and online image search built into the camera. Which is a good thing, i normally have to switch to the apps for these.
So ill have to see how it all goes and what it is like because i can knock it or not.
Same goes for the swipe up app screen (i know you can turn if off but ill try it for a while and see)

It's a feature in Froyo only. Several, if not all, phones with Froyo have the capability.
The reason it only works with the hardware keys and not the capacitive buttons is because of the way that Samsung made them work. For whatever reason, the capacitive buttons don't actually respond to your finger pressing the button, but rather the finger lifting from the button, making a long-press impossible. Why this is the case is beyond me, as my Samsung TV and PS3 both have capacitive buttons and both respond to the actual physical touching (proof in that they both have long-press functions on the buttons).
Also, you only need to press home once. Just hold back for about three seconds before pressing it.
Must be a Froyo thing, works for me. Only issue is that pics are sideways (landscape only). Still prefer "ShootMe" though.
First off, i know its illegal to text while driving, but sometimes its necessary. so lets leave that as my own business. save the smug comments, please.

with that said, im not familiar with car/dock mode on any device. im not sure if there is a way to activate any car mode for the vibrant. if there is let me know.
i basically would love it if somehow i could make it so that while im driving, swype automatically becomes my default input method. And then when im not driving, switch back to my default.
would i be able to use tasker? how would the profiling go? location or time based profiles obviously would not work consistantly... im a lazy american, so i would like for all of this to be automatic. I realize that i could just create a profile and activate it manually every time i get in the car, but whats the fun in that? i have a smartphone, i wanna see how smart i can make it.

why don't you just text with your voice on Vlingo? Car mode is on the widget. It will also read your texts to you by enabling safereader. car mode is not automatic, you actually have to tap a little car.

Really? I've been running with it all the time for a while now and my battery is just fine. ~20-24 hours if I don't constantly text/surf. (Which unfortunately, I do.)
I have to say voice search does it for me, I'm always impressed at how accurate it is. And it literally is one long button press of the search button away.
What happens when you drive your car? Your GPS would be able to detect it moving at a certain speed.... but I can't think of anything else (nevermind the fact that it wouldn't detect anything out of the norm when you weren't actually in movement). Docking it with the car dock obviously could set that off, but there's nothing else.
Like you said, it is not a big enough hassle for people to bother with it. Long pressing the input window allows you to switch it very quickly, like you pointed out yourself.
Just use the voice type button on your keyboard. It's by the return key. It works fantastically.
Fyi it's not illegal to text and drive in all states either. You can safely text and drive if you concentrate more on driving. People just don't for the most part. That's all I'm saying so I don't feed the trolls

Personally vlingo or the built in speech to text is your best bet, tasker is always an option but in order for that to work well you would have to have gps on at all times. im not sure if its possible but you could use a better home or custom toggle to switch but until samsung gets its act together the car home app is unlikely to work the way you want it.
Never mind

title says it all; its a PITA to reach around through the case to turn the screen on all the time, and, even though the screen is supposed to come on when you push the menu key on the hardware keyboard, it doesnt work that way, at least for me..
Can anyone offer any other suggestions?
I know once I root this, there will be other choices, but, I want to learn more about the device before I root it
thanks so much for your help!
no, since xoom doesnt have soft keys so the only way to turn the screen on its to touch the power button. in other terms if you want to wake the xoom up when screen is off you need to press power button.
hopefully, some one will develop a software fix
for this; I cant be the only person that is annoyed by this..
thanks!

Idk if it works on the xoom but simply lockscreen on the market has a feature that uses the devices proximity sensor to unlock the phone, it might be just what you are looking for. Like I said, not sure about compatibility but the developer is pretty active here on xda and he might be able to figure something out.

The Xoom does not have a proximity sensor. One developer that frequents the forms and gave us all a screenshot app for the Xoom for free, has an App Killswitch which does the opposite action that you want. When you close the case, the light sensor senses the darkness and turns the screen off. It would take more battery but likewise would be possible to do it the way you wish when opening the cover. Maybe if we ask nicely, he can make it happen
well, I installed nolock, from the market, and it reduces the steps to one to get the screen on; when you push the power button, there is no lock screen to go through, which helps, but I wish there was a way to wake it up with either the keyboard, or just tapping the screen..
I'm sure this will come one of these days..
EDIT: It only works sometimes, not ready for 3.0 I guess....
It is possible but will not work until we have a deodexed ROM. The is a way to remap the volume keys to wake the screen but as soon as the keyguard kicks in the volume keys are disabled. With a deodexed ROM I can disable keyguard. An alterative option I might be able to work out is to wake the screen with a paired keyboard via blurtooth. So far in my testing this is working well.
Basically I have mapped the F1 key on my keyboard to wake/sleep the Xoom.

Try to push the below file using adb ... you need root for this to work. After rebooting the right ctrl key on the Motorola keyboard should become a power button for you. Let the screen goto sleep for a few minutes and attempt to wake it using the button. Let me know if this works.
Download:
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?hsqqsehpcjr812t
ADB PUSH:
adb remount
adb push Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl \system\usr\keylayout\Vendor_22b8_Product_093d.kl
adb reboot
Make sure you unplug the USB cable before testing. I think while it is plugged into USB keyguard is disabled.
EDIT:

This has been discussed many times on this forum.
Long story short, I agree with you, especially since I leave the xoom on a table during a meeting. My solution...I downloaded Widgetsoid2.x. Among other widgets, I have a no turn-off widget on my main page. walking into a meeting, i hit it, forcing the xoom to stay on. obviously kills the battery, but i still get two full days.

Always on acts as the screen was off, so yes, you have to press the home button first, but you can just leave it on the button after pressing and it will unlock straight away.
Or, you can activate the edge screen by swiping at the edge, when the edge screen comes up (AOD would disappear) , place your finger on the scanner, and the screen would unlock
I really hope samsung brings an update to just unlock the phone by placing the finger on the home button. No pressing and all. It feels so much better like that on iphone and nexus.

Well, if a hardware component is designed to be always-on, it will not drain the battery. For example, the edge swipe will not drain the battery although it keeps the touch controller on. On the LG G5 and Nexus 6P the fingerprint sensor is always-on and does not drain the battery.
However, if Samsung did not design their sensor to be always-on, then there is not much that can be done via a software update.

1. Most people like extra features. I.e. literally ****ing everyone on xda
2. Even if bull**** did arise (which it wouldn't) they could just move it to developer options. That **** on there is basically all useless anyways.
And 3. It's not "adding options and toggles all over the place". It's 1. Signle. Toggle. Honestly I couldn't care if they had a toggle for that or not but it just pissed me off that you were so keen on shutting this idea down and op didn't even respond to you. Dickhole.
Edit: P.s. excuse my french.

I do know I'm reviving a severely old thread but honestly can't give two ****s. If you're here to complain about it being revived go ***** and moan to the mods.

First, name calling is childish, and often a sign of low intelligence. That might not be true of you, but that is how it comes across in writing.
To comment on your points:
1. Most people on XDA, yes, which is a super small minority of all users. It has been shown many times that average consumers (the overall majority by almost 10:1) want products simpler.
2. I agree that a good way to handle additional options would be to shove them in a separate developer or advanced settings area.
3. Noted. That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. Just don't assume your opinion matches what the majority of the overall population want.

That's not an opinion. That's a fact. It's 1 toggle. Just one. It's not like they're opening another section in the settings. Just one toggle. And if they want simpler phones they can go to iPhone. That's what iPhone is for. The technologically uninclined. OP is just talking about one single toggle that will let you choose between one option or another. It's not even that hard to code in. I highly doubt that not almost everyone wants more settings. More settings is great! You can make your phone your phone! You can have it do exactly what you want. Whether it be consuming extra power for a fingerprint scanner or conserving it. Hell put it in the toggles for powersaving so when they turn power saving on the fingerprint turns off until it's clicked. Literally so many ways you could go about this. You could make it so the scanner is on between 8am and 10pm but off at night. You could make it so if the phone hasn't been touched within an hour the scanner turns off. There's no reason not to have extra features. Unless you're super old. Then I think you'd want less features. That's what easy mode is for. (oh and apple is for that too. That's why so many old lady's have iPhones and so many old men have Android's. I would guess at least)
Edit: I also only called you a dickhole because I was pissed that you shot this dude's idea down until he gave up. You were just being a dickhole to him. So that's why I said that.
