Hello,
First of all, let me state that I've read much of the FAQ and it is greatly written. However, some of the links are old and not working and I did not understand what I need to do at my stage. Therefore I would really appreciate it if you would kindly direct me to the proper steps and maybe explain some things if I'm stuck along the way. I'm not afraid of learning.
So, I have the following phone which I received from a family member who tried to install something on it but probably did not know what he was doing.
Samsung Galaxy S
MODEL: GT-I9000
SSN:I9000GSMH
- The phone CAN enter the Download state (volume down + home + start) and it shows a yellow Android Icon with a shovel and the word "download" (I think).
- The phone CAN enter the recovery mode (where you can install from zip).
At start, the phone is stuck at loading screen of Samsung and Cyanogen mod.
Unfortunately
-I DO NOT KNOW if the phone is rooted.
-I DO NOT KNOW what is the android/kernal/firmware versions.
So what do I need to know and do in order to:
1. Get the phone back to working order.
2. Root it if so needed.
3. Install the appropriate cyanogen ROM or any other recommended ROM.
a. I want to use the phone for the app XCSOAR. Which is a great flight computer for soaring pilots. Therefore, I don't care much about effects. I do want the phone to be light on battery as possible
(Sometimes for this app to work up to 3-4 hours) and the screen to be bright (so I can see it under the sun).
As mentioned above, I'm willing to learn and would really appreciate your help.

Boot into recovery, do a wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, Download this ROM , place it on SD card or internal storage and flash it in recovery.. (that's latest and best working KitKat ROM with latest security patches), also download Open Gapps ( ARM, 4.4, nano) and flash it right after flashing the ROM. Wipe cache again, and then reboot system, wait for it to boot, that's it.
.
After further reading I managed to recover the phone to the original local ROM (created by the distributer). I was much helped by a post in this forum regarding a "dbdata" error (cannot mount E).
Now I'll try to flash your new ROM onto my phone.
Thank you very much for your reply. I'll update.

I did just what you recommended and it works fine, so thanks!!
However, when it runs XCSOAR (glider pilot free flight computer) the phone gets very hot unlike in the original distributor's ROM.
Do you have suggestion for a different ROM or settings? Or should I revert back to stock samsung GB ROM?
Thanks again,
Rami

You can try reverting back to stock GB. This is an old phone so its not very good for heavier apps. Google or HERE maps won't even work for me on any ROM i tried, it's too slow.

Actually it works. It is a nice and probebly not heavy app since it has a version for older PDA computers.
Anyway, I will try and install a stock ROM from this thread.
Thanks again,

Hi All,
I am new here and this is my first post. But i have been reading this forum for quite sometime and know that u guys are now my final stone. I am a proud owner of a Motorola Defy. And I am having this strange behavior, which is effectively rendered the phone almost useless. The phone is acting like its got a restore point in itself, and every time i restart.. it gets back to that point in time.
This includes app installs, uninstalls, stuff placed in system through adb push, theme, everything in the OS. I tried installing a different ROm through clockworkmod, but its not taking effect. Its saying install success but as soon as it restarts, its going back to the old ROM. (takes time to load, so i guess it reinstall back/restored the old version)
Details of device : I am from India and the phone was manufactured in India in around April/May 2011. Its a red lens Defy and and came with Eclair. I updated it officially to the first Froyo release for SEA region. After that i rooted the phone with superone click, and installed WIUI rom. I have been updating the ROM with newer versions around each month. The last one was 1.11.18 though as i waiting for a good ICS version to flash.
The problem occurred after i started installing some gold apps from getJar. It restated in between and install... and that point is kind of acting like a restore point even now.
Things I did: Tried installing different rom by CWM method. Reinstalling second init and CM, both old and new version. Tried restoring nandroid backup of my official ROM. Tried fixed and full sbf flash through rsdlite 4.9.5.2 and now 5.6. First 3 things reset as soon as i restart. For RSDLite, it gives checksum error for each and every ROM i tried. I tried all SEA releases, JORDN_U3_97.21.51, Defy Plus Rom 2.3.6, 2.21 first eclair rom, everything gives the same error. From the RSDLite logs, i could see that there is something wrong as.. say the last successful CG was 33, and the error came for 34, the log says its expecting the checksum on the sbf to be equal to that of CG 33. Its taking the last successful checksum validation and expecting that for all the CGs henceforth. its not showing what the device actually has.
I atlast could somehow, but trial and error, removed all the CGs which were throwing error, and recompiled the sbf to make it pass the RSDLite flash. The CGs present in the ROM (JRDNEM_U3_3.4.3-36-1.7) were 32, 34, 42, 53, 61, 64, 65. And as soon as it booted, it restored back to the checkpoint. Even after i formatted by card and put it in, the app shortcuts remained on the home screen, but as the apps on the card were gone, they are just junk and doesnt open anything.
Thanks in advance. Please let me know what you need from me to help me resolve this issue.
Any help... Anyone?
Can someone please suggest something?
This is what i got from some people. I am not sure how far this is possible, but somehow the theme i installed just before this all happened, from MIUI market.. somehow managed to change something inside phone's kernel, past the locked bootloader? I am totally a noob in this and just a wild imagination?
Or may be some sort of cache wipe is happening everytime the phone boots up, So even when i install the ROM, when it boots up, it gets back the old ROM.. like what would probably happen if i do a factory reset soon after i instal a rom before the restart..?
I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me out with this...
Checksum errors were for me also.
I tried my office computer for flashing and instantly flash was done. The checksum error occurred 7 times on my good computer before that.
Reflashing froyo must take care of all errors happening
Thanks Kapil fr the response. Are you from india? Which sbf did u flash? And waht all did u install in the office pc? I have a pc of my friend where i can try to reflash if you tell me the exact steps that u took in the fresh pc.
Also, can anybody tell me how to use adb commands in CWM mode? Its recognizing my phone in normal mode but as soon as it boots in Moto recovery of CWM, its not recognizing anymore. Want to use adb format commands from recovery.
Hi I was able to use adb in CWM, but format commands were not working. How can i format the system partition? please help me with this.
Is there anyone here who know how to restore a nandroid backup manually using adb commands for MB525???!!!!!
Sounds weird and impossible. Try this. Wipe everything though cwm and flash new rom. Try ms2ginger.
Thanks darshanonline for the suggestion. I tried to wipe everything.. factory reset+cache+dalvik cache wipe. And then tried to install cyanogenmod 7.1 as well as 3 different wiui builds. Everytime it shows that the install was successful, ut as soon as i restart, it would go back to the old ROM.
Is there any checkpoint system in android, seeing the init.rc, i can see comments on something about saving a checkpoint. Is there any particular condition under which this checkpoint may be getting used on very restart?
Also.. is there any way for RSDLite to skip the chksum validations and get the install anyways?.. Some sort of a hack into it?
Ok.. Found something else thats happening. I dont need to shutdown for the system to revert back. Say i install a few things new after a reboot.. After some time.. 1 day at max, i am not able to open them, and neither am i able to open manage applications or market. Everything force closes. I have Ti Backup installed, and i opened it, and i didnt find the new apps to back up. I connected the device and checked through adb, and they were not present in the app folder. They just vanished... So basically after a certain point of tiime, the new stuff just gets deleted on its own.
Guys i know i may sound dumb and stupid with my questions, but i really couldnt find any solution on the net for this. Please tell me waht i should do, and i'll do it. But tell me something. Dont ignore please!
and you did wipe data from within stock recovery (vol down+power etc.), i presume..
Sent from my MB526 using Tapatalk
Yes i did that too.
wiped data and cache. Restarted to cwm and installed update.zip (renamed cm 7.1 stable) and by selecting zip from sd card. Same results. Installs successfully but reverts back as soon as i restart.

Hopefully your problem should be solved.
I found 1.12.16 ICS with lesser FC than the 2.21

@ headers.chennai - Thanks. I will try that ROM, along with Pikachu ROM with Aroma installer, might be a different installer can try fix it?!
BTW.. does anyone have the TI OMAP board utility? Any chance that it can be available outsite here?
I tried the arora installer and it supposedly formatted the system partition and remade it.. but as soon as it finishes and i restart.. I get back the same ROM.
Is it some way that the files are not getting deleted, like some hardware lock or fault?

My trouble here, same as your.
Hey man.. looks like we are having same problem...
Sorry abt the typo... its Aroma Installer. Its with the Pikachu ROM in this link :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1498843
Its a new installer that launches from cwm when u try and install this ROM. u got some options to select and on selecting the complete install option,, the log shows that it formats the system partition and then creates it. I saved the log file, but for some reason the file shows up blank now. Might be problem with the launcher.. or my phone.. dont know.

Not for me, my checkpoint without cwm
My dad had bought a used htc hd2 and it had android already installed on it and he gave it to me. But his google account is locked in it and restore to factory settings doesn't erase everything so i went around the internet looking for solutions and i learned a little more about phone modding and stuff so i was wondering in addition to getting rid of anything should i upgrade it? It hasn't been used in over a year and here's the phone info
Android Version: 2.3.4
Kernel version: 2.6.32.14_tytung_r10
Build number: GRJ22 (NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.7 Nand)
It really depends on what you want from the phone. GB is stable and smooth but ICS and above ROMs are better for gaming and web browsing. I'd recommend at the very least flashing a more up to date GB ROM such as TyphooN, but your current ROM should be fine if you don't want to bother flashing anything.

I would like to flash and have a phone better for gaming. And also i had mentioned that my dad's google account is locked in and i can't get rid of some of the personal data even from factory reset.
I was looking at the ICS' you mentioned and the latest one would be http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860 right? If so could you point me to a guide that could help me install it?
ok to get rid of your dads account you must boot into recovery and wipe data....when phone is off hold down the power button until it goes to a menu...magldr or clk..depents on what the other guy that had the phone done with it...you will find an option "ad recovery" or something..choose it to boot into recovery and then wipe data...you should really search it...you will find what you need...this forum is full of guides...
Look in my sig, there's a guide. ICS is definitely better for gaming, you can flash any ICS ROM you choose but NexusHD2 is always good, I used that one too. If you want to just wipe your data then do what the person above said, i.e. wipe data/factory reset in CWM.
U can flash a new rom altogether. Here is a good one. Its the typhoon rom. I use it and its fast and stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=933951
Android being installed on the internal memory, MAGLDR (bootloader) and the clockwork mod recovery are already installed.
U can download the rom, put it in the root of your sd card. Then follow these:
1. Boot into MAGLDR ( by holding the power button when you boot, hold it until u see the MAGLDR menu)
2. Go to the option, "AD Recovery". You will boot into the clockworkmod recovery
3. Wipe date and cache using the options. Also by going in the advanced menu, delete the dalvik cache as well.
4. then select the 'install zip from sdcard"
5. Navigate to the rom ( its the downloaded .zip file)
6. It will install and reboot the phone to use the new rom.
The Phone will be like new. U will access the welcome to android screens. All your dads google contacts and anything associated with the google account will be lost. All contacts, emails, settings etc will be deleted. U will be asked to make a gmail or use an existing one. All apps u installed will be lost. U can backup the apps using titanium backup. and the contacts can be saved on the sd card and then on to ur pc is u want to. It is suggested that you format the sd card as well before installing the rom. but im not sure about this.
First, let me get the formalities out of the way... long time lurker, first time poster. I hope you guys can help me out!
My GS4 semi-bricked while trying to restore my phone from LiquidSmooth ROM . My phone had no MAC address nor IP address after I flashed to LiquidSmooth, so I figured I needed to restore files I may have accidentally deleted.. The phone became stuck on the splash screen so I tried pulling the battery, going into recovery, and clearing cache/dalvik. No luck.
So then I tried to restore using a backup that I had made before flashing, but then it got stuck on the AT&T screen. Tried to clear cache/dalvik, but it didn't work. I thought maybe the back up didn't work because I was flashed into a different ROM, so I downloaded this stock rom by scrosier, and tried again... but to no avail.
Now I want to try flashing the phone back to stock, but I have a early 2008 MacBook running 10.7.5 (Lion). Odin is windows only, and Heimdall doesn't work on my version of OS X (keeps crashing the moment I open it). I thought maybe updating my MacBook to Mountain Lion (10.8) might work, but Mountain Lion is not supported on my Macbook, thus cannot update OS X... and I don't have access to a PC at this moment either.
Is my only option to go out and buy windows and install on bootcamp? Does anyone know if I could flash my phone back to stock using the computer I have now?
Sorry if my post didn't make any sense. I'm in a hurry and I want to fix my phone already! Thanks in advance
EDIT:
I have TWRP 2.5.0.3 on my phone

If you are able to access recovery then do this:
Put Liquid Smooth and its gapps on the external card using a card reader
Go into recovery, factory reset, wipe both caches, format /system, flash the rom and gapps, reboot

I actually tried to reflash Liquid Smooth and wiped cache / factory reset, but once it reboots, a screen pops up that says "Android is updating" and updates 120 files. However, when it finishes, it gives me an error along the lines of "Unfortunately... something something," and instantly reboots. Then it hangs on the Liquid Smooth splash screen. Couldn't get a good look at what the message said because it happens so quickly.

Then I suggest you flash a different ROM. Try out Slim. Liquid Smooth is just a Slim ripoff.
Put Slim and the Addons on the SD, and flash it like you would when changing ROMs. A clean wipe.

That's not Slim, he just put Slim because it's slimmed down. I haven't personally tried it. I'm a tester for SlimRoms, so thats all I ever run. Test builds. It does look nice though, but it won't have near the customization of Slim.

Yes, slimroms.net
It just depends on whether or not you want all of the Google apps typically in a regular gapps pkg, or a stripped down version. I use the AIO_Addons, or you could get the Aroma, so you can pick and choose. The Slim_gapps is a stripped down version.

Last time I flashed a weekly, it wasn't loki'd, but that was a while back. I'm running test builds from black_jck, and build my own sometimes. I mentioned it to him that the weekly wasn't loki'd but that was a while back, so I can't speak for them now. The official builds are. If you're going to flash the weekly, flash loki_doki just to be safe.

Alright, so I flashed Slim and the AIO_addons, and rebooted the phone.
Once it was rebooting, the screen i mentioned earlier popped up, that said "Android is updating" and went through 109 files. When it was done, an error popped up quickly, saying that "Unfortunately..." and I couldn't read the rest before the phone rebooted. I let the screen hang for about 10 minutes, pulled the battery, cleared cache and dalvik, and rebooted again. No luck.
I think my best option now would be to return to stock, but I can't using my macbook. So my original question still stands.. How can I return to stock without using Odin and Heimdall?

I would say so myself, Odin back to stock, but since you have a mac and I'm not sure if Heimdall support the S4 try this:
Factory Reset
Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Format /system
Format /data
Format /internal (If CWM-based recovery)
Flash ROM, addons, reboot

Well thanks for all your help! Happy that my phone is working again without having to flash to stock.

Glad you got it going man, and enjoy Slim, it's hands down the best ROM there is if you prefer minimal with tons of customization options.
I'm running an S4 and have this very weird issue where after installing a custom rom, the phone would reboot and load the rom successfully, but if I ever reboot it, it never wants to go past the Samsung logo.
If I try entering TWRP and fixing permissions or factory reset, it just comes up with errors and fails. The only way around it is to format data, then reflash the rom.
But now I have a nandroid backup so everytime I reboot, I basically have to reflash the rom.. It's happened on at least 2 roms!
I've used the search function on the forums and found a thread was inconclusive so I've made this thread.
Thanks in advance
(This is my first Android phone too, so I'm not 100% familiar with all the different software and techniques, but I can definitely learn!)
Try flashing the ROM with the latest stock CWM. TWRP can cause issues.

go into the wipe options on twrp - go to advanced and select - cache, dalvik, system, data - swipe
then do a normal full wipe
reflash the chosen rom
power off rather than reboot
then power up
something gets fracked with the wipes somewhere and thats how i fixed it.
either that or flash philz recovery through odin and do a "new rom" wipe

try flashing the rom twice in succession. it will stick eventually but its just getting the right combo. these S4's are a right pain in the ass just now.
also another option would be downloading a rom with Aroma installer onto a micro sd and see if that gets you out of the problem. ive found on other devices ive had that a rom with Aroma can sometimes get you moving (id suggest Omega rom as a good solid base)

The rom I'm flashing (twice) now is Omega actually!
I'll see how this goes! Hoping it's okay!
..
try to install another rom clean & stable and do full wipe or trust me the best to turn the phone to default firmware.

So are you suggesting I install Omega, get it run, then install Aroma installer and reinstall it?

no i just meant flash the rom twice IF it didnt have Aroma.
try GoldenEye rom from micro sd (obviously downloaded and placed on the card through a pc and put back in the phone).
Or as above - you might have to start from scratch and use Odin to revert back to stock and re-root etc again.
Although i said Aroma sometimes helps, being honest it was a rom with Aroma that started causing me a similar issue in the first place (Not Omega or Foxhound though)
No luck guys... I think I'd rather start from a stock rom too. When I created my stock rom backup, it was through nandroid and an CWM format, but CWM did work, it froze when it was checking for MD5 or something...
But now I'm trying to find the right firmware for my phone, is there any thing I need to look out for? Gt-i9505 from Australia?

In that thread, there's two of them, I'm downloading the one closest to when I bought it which was June
Hi, I'm trying to get my bricked Redmi Note 7 working again (previously flashed with a Pixel Experience ROM and after latest OTA update it's stuck at the G logo). I struggled for 2 days until my PC recognized the phone in fastboot mode and listed it correctly in Device Manager.
Today I'm finally over that step, but now i stumbled upon another issue: My phone doesn't have USB debugging enabled. I wanted to use XiaomiTool in order to unbrick it but the app asks me to enable it first.
I believe I met a dead end, no Google research helps me at all. I'm just hoping I'm this much of a newbie in the topic that I'm searching with the wrong terms or wrong places and there is indeed a solution, which is why I came here. If not, then I just got a brand new brick
I'm using OrangeFox recovery, in case that info is needed.

Hi, i had a similiar problem when two days ago i flashed the pixel experience for the first time. I wiped everything (except for the SD storage) and formatted the Data partition. That's were i made a mistake (because i should have wiped only dalvik cache, cache and data partitions, infact it worked out later with this kind of wipe.), but however i was able to fix that by flashing the boot image of the miui 11.04 from the orange fox recovery.
However, if this doesn't work, you could also try to flash the firmware of the miui 10 or miui 11 version, infact, i tried other things to fix it, and the only things which helped me to exit from the bootloop were a flash of the boot.img or a flash of the latest miui 10 global firmware (the boot image is also from the same version of the miui 10)
These things helped me to fix the bootloop on the pixel experience (or other roms like HavocOS and CRDROID). However, if you want to get back to the miui, you will have to surf the web in search of the latest rom of it and then flash it from the custom recovery by doing a complete wipe.
Unfortunately i wasn't able to put some download links because i've just registered on the XDA forum . I hope that these information will work out for you. Have a nice day .

Thanks for reply. I managed to fix it by wiping cache, dalvik and data, then formatted data partition and booted into system and my phone was fully working again.
Now i'm interested in reverting to stock MIUI to try new MIUI 11, how do i exactly do this process? Get the recovery rom in phone storage, boot into recovery, wipe necessary stuff then install the rom and that's it?
