I have an s8+ on preorder from Sprint. I've been kicking around how to transfer data from my s7 to the s8. I'm lazy and would like to have the apps reinstalled along with their data. I would also like to have my desktop restored. Here is what I think will work. Let google restore my apps (I believe this will retrieve apps + data, wifi passwords, etc - correct me if I'm wrong) then use the backup from smart switch on my pc to restore the desktop folders and shortcuts and the pics and videos. Does this sound like it will work?
Thanks

It seems to transfer app settings and app data, even files in storage (for example apk files).

If I understand things, and it uses the Android backup functionality, it will only transfer app data if the developer has targeted a high-enough Android API version and hasn't disabled the ability to backup app data. So many apps won't be backing up any data.
Also, your S7 has to be running Marshmallow to transfer app data.
I used Smart Switch to transfer everything from my Hwawei P10P and it worked seamlessly!

Use titanium backup from the app store. Copy the folder with backed up data from the phone to your pc, copy it onto new phone and restore.
Titanium won't work on unrooted phones. Try my backup pro!

More importantly, how do you get the titanium backup files on the Nexus 4? You can't do it though USB, right? Should I use a FTP server app and do it through FTP?

Well, I restored my apps+data on my N4 from my Evo 3D and the N4 bootloops
Where can I find a list of compatible apps for JB 4.2.1? Thanks!
I'm back on my Evo 3D for now...

Don't just restore all data and go through them one by one. Restore only data for user apps installed from the Play Store. The likelihood is your phone messed up because you overwrote some system data.

I did restore some system data but they showed up as green in TB so I thought it was safe (like calendar, contacts, SMS/MMS, wi-fi access points). I will try again and only restore user apps with data. A few apps did not restore at all though (like FB, official Twitter), weird.
I hope I can sort this out. Otherwise, I'm gonna sell the phone.

Here's the problem, I can't see files backed up to that directory. It seems as if they're being filtered from my view. Isn't there an issue with the way USB works such that it's not giving access to all the files, just the multimedia ones?
I use an app called DataSync to sync app data between phones. I've had no problems transferring app data between my HTC Rezound and my Nexus 4. I use dropbox as my storage area, you then upload old data from old phone to dropbox and then download it from dropbox to new phone. You select which apps to sync, the repository, then which direction to sync, very simple to use.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quintstoffers.DataSync&hl=en
I used adb backup & restore to move content from my unrooted One X to my N4.
There's an issue with MTP that directories don't show up right away. There's workaround for other phones or if you install CM 10, but I don't think there's a way to get back to USB Mass Storage on stock Jelly Bean.
Ok so it turns out it WAS one of system settings in green that messed up the phone. My problem is it's actually the SMS/MMS backup, which is apparently tied to the phone app (the HTC one since my backup is from the Evo 3D). I'm not sure how to restore these. I know I can do SMS with SMS Backup & restore but it doesn't do MMS. Any app out there that can save & restore both?

Use the backup./restore XML feature in titanium backup it does SMS and mms including pictures
As a rule of thumb avoid restoring any system data from differing make phones or across android roms/versions.

This, and it b/u's up your sdcard as well, just do this after you unlock your bootloader if that's in the works.
I found letting it try and backup the shared storage caused me a bunch of problems, so I told it to skip that and copied the bits I needed myself.

Yeah I get your point. I'm usually super careful but green options are supposed to be safe to restore but, as it turns out, they're not really.
Use SMS Backup & Restore from the Play Store, it's free and good.
I am having a similar problem, my Nexus 4 will arrive this week.
All stuff is ok with TB, except Line from Naver.
Anyone knows how to export and import messages, don't wanna lose them
Hey guys.
I un boxed my nexus 4 like a month ago. THIS TRULY IS A POWERHOUSE.
Well, to be straight to the problem. I just heard that apps installed on my nexus 4 can be stored into a cloud storage.
But I cant find where to do that, & which Cloud is the best for that.
A simple 'HOW-TO' would be great.
THANKS!
This is probably the thing you're referring to.

It's not the app that gets installed in the cloud. It's the app data. And it's not something you have to manually enable. It depends on whether or not the app developer supports it.

But will it or will it not effect the running and execution of that particular app?
And How to check that which apps data can be stored in there. And if yes, then how to transfer those files? SIMPLE UPLOAD?
BY THE WAY, THANKS ALOT FOR YOUR REPLY.

You talking about a Backup for all? Or just system settings or Apps with settings? Rooted?
Gesendet von meinem SM-N9005 mit Tapatalk
Helium is another option. You can schedule backups, save those backups to Dropbox or Google Drive, make a complete backup or just backup app data and when you go to restore the data it will prompt you to install the app. I choose the latter option, and it did successfully restore alot of the data on my phone, but I was disappointed that S Note files, and a data saved in a few other apps was not restored, or failed with I tried to restore the data. I haven't given up on the app yet, but from here on out I'm using the full backup.
Hope this helps.
Hey everyone,
I used to have a couple of HTC phones back in the day (Droid Incredible, Thunderbolt, Rezound), all of which were capable of turning data on when I receive an MMS. I always leave my data and WiFi off when not in use. Both my S4 and Nexus 6 cannot do this. I was wondering, does the Moto X Pure turn on data when you receive an MMS? My friend has an HTC One M8 and his can turn it on automatically. I would assume the Moto X Pure does not do this. I currently paid for Tasker, and every method to do this through Tasker has not worked properly for me. Does anyone know a solution? It's very aggravating that my MMS do not download automatically, and I have to turn on my data and then download them just to receive my message. Thanks in advance!
Bump
Why are you turning off your data? You say you turn off data and WiFi when not in use...when is that? A cell phone without one of these in use is basically an expensive slab of metal and plastic???

I don't need to be connected to the internet 24/7. It's a waste of battery. I don't use my phone all the time, and it's way easier to just turn on my data and catch up on my notifications. I'd rather that then deal with my battery draining more when I'm not even able to check my notifications anyway. So it's a complete waste for me.
Bumps
Current generation phones can get a day of battery while keeping data and WiFi on the whole time, thus making what your looking for unnecessary and to the best of my knowledge no phone has had this since ~2012. If for some reason you're unable to charge once a day I'd recommend a battery pack for such an occasion.

so I was wondering the same thing. I'm coming from note4 which turned automatically. shouldnt have to explain why we want the data off. please can someone just answer the question?
Since everyone is slightly thick headed when it comes to not keeping on data I'll give you the real answer. With the update to lollipop google removed the ability of texting apps to do just this. Textra, handcent, and even the good ole aosp sms app could have this. For this option to work for any app that contains the setting you need to make that app a system app. Then it will work. Their is an app on the play store that moves to /system. It does require root

I believe their words made the system more secure. Agreed though pain in the @ss. Heads up though. When backing up in titanium whatever you back up won't be a part of it. So if full wiping you will have to reimplement the messaging app as a system app.

Sorry to be a pain, but I've been extremely busy and couldn't get the Google Messenger to become a system app. I tried Titanium Backup, and manually moving the app's lib files and nothing works. What is the play store app you are talking about? The only one I could find just moves system apps to user apps. Thanks in advance for all of your help!!
I downloaded the Link2SD app which successfully moved Google Messenger to a system app. The setting to turn data on is checked but it still does not work. Anyone have any other ideas? If not that's okay I'm just curious if someone else has this working.
So, I've been using this app and it works very well. You have to be rooted though. And I am running MM.
"Auto enable data" allows you to have ur data off at all times,, and when an MMS comes through it will turn on your data, download the MMS and when done it will turn off data.
"WIFI fix" will turn off WIFI if connected to a WIFI, and turn it on once data turns on and then off after it's done downloading an MMS.
Name is AwSMS. Get it on the Playstore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=project.awsms
So now small things start to piss me off ATM.
There is this glorious Xperia Transfer app which should easily transfer my data from one phone to another.
So I start it and I select SMS and Bookmarks and Call Log, since these are the only things which I wan to transfer.
So I do it and after I plug the Z5 this amazing PCCompanion says it will transfer everything BUT NOT SMS and not Bookmarks.
Anybody did this before? It's f.... annoying.
It worked flawlessly for me phone to phone.

Me too, no issues with transfer. I only did SMS/MMS and Call Logs also. Actually I did it once from Z2 to Z5 and again from Z5 to Z5 again and everything transferred fine. I used the cloud method both times.
But you mean Xperia Transfer Mobile?
And what is Cloud exactly in this context?
The Mobile app was ridiculous too because it got my Z2 stuck with lack of memory.
Because this cannot let you choose what you want to do BEFORE.
Edit:
Well looks like the cloud one worked!
Is this data located somwhere so I can erase it after?
I used Xperia Transfer mobile to transfer stuff from my Nexus 5 to my Z5 and it worked flawlessly. I did it over wi-fi
Mine worked flawlessly on my old Galaxy S3
Mine worked fine with Cloud option.
With PCCompanion it could't copy my smses.
NFC was also problematic because of the file size created on my Z2...
Anyway success in the end.
Thanks guys!

Lumia 1020 to Z5, didn't work [Got stuck on Step 3 where it kept checking sending phone], had to transfer contacts using some random app from Appstore which pulled data through Bluetooth.

What your old phone? Xperia Transfer seems work only for Android phones. For more effective file transfer between different, I found MobileTrans is pretty good one. It supports Android, iOS, Windows and Blackberry phone.
