Hello, I have read lots of topics but I haven't found the solution! I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 with broken screen and I need to control it via usb with some program of screen mirroring. This type of programs need usb debug on! The phone is stock. Is there a way to enable usb debug? Thank you

Hi
I've just had an accident with my Galaxy S4 LTE, which broke it in a major way which completely broke the screen and digitizer as the phone got stuck in a car door slammed shut... really nasty :cyclops:
somehow by some miracle it still works, buttons, speakers, charging and all, just not the screen and I am thinking I will just use it as the most expensive android TV stick there is, with bluetooth keyboard and usb video out but I have one pickle.
right now I have MIUI rom, without USB debugging and broken video out, and I am thinking I need original samsung rom to get the video-out capabilites, but as I do not have a screen on my S4 so I think I would have to make a custom rom with remote desktop and/or usb debugging enabled so I can use my computer to set it up but I don't know how I can do any of that and I'm looking here for pointers and help.
Any suggestions?

Yep, that's a bust but that is not a big surprise for me because I have turned it off, along with usb debugging
Hello everybody,
my wife has just broken the screen (and appearantly the digitizer) of her S3.
Of course the USB debugging has never been enabled ever since I bought this phone for her.
So my question is this: how can I backup the contacts without a working screen and disabled USB debugging? Is there a way? Can I enable USB debugging via ADB? The ROM in question is fully stock.
Thanks in advance for any helpful insight.

Easy. Google account should be set ☺

Sorry if I sound like a bad person but ok. Technology is to take advantage of it... So please anyone if you have an android smartphone use your Google Account and store your contacts under your account. It autosynced and you can always get them through an Internet connection and a browser by going into your account.
If this is not your case perhaps you can connect a mouse into the USB of your phone and try to navigate with it to do your job.
TapaTalk and JiaYu S3 with Android MM!
huh, just plug in a usb mouse via OTG cable ( $1 or 2 ).
you dont need another screen.
but make sure your phone is of a kernel that enabled OTG.
Been setting up my ShieldTV (2017) - and sideloaded YouTubeTV App and Chrome. Need an external keyboard for them to work and tried the Logitech K400+.
I've added the USB Dongle, and had the keyboard inches away - nothing. Powered off, rebooted, nothing.
Checked all the settings - don't see anything related to external keyboard. All I was able to do was select the AOSP keyboard.
Is it the keyboard or is there just something basic I'm missing?
i have and use the k400 model and it works out of the box even on latest stock 5.1.
No need to setup anything.
Check your batteries and make sure you turn it on (the switch is on top right of the kb). Last but not least check the usb receiver is the correct (also in case of various devices of same brand) and says Logitech.
If no go then it could be defective. Try it in a PC or laptop. Btw for better performance i use a single usb 2.0 port extender but works fine in a 4 port usb 3.0 i have, however mileage may vary as in many cases usb 3.0 ports can cause issues, in this case interference.

are you in stock nougat or full android?
usually in the latter you gotta do a trick to enable second usb port host mode as by default work for ADB/Debug only
If you have USB debugging on try turning off.

Im fully stock. In that case does the shield tv only support 1 USB port? Wouldn't make any sense.

no, both work but one works for debugging too as Nvidia removed the mini usb otg port.
As i said if you have developers mode enabled and usb debugging try disabling it and reboot.

great. please add [Solved] to thread title and better yet change it to something more accurate so others with same problem can find this thread easily.

Well - this is just silly - I don't know how to update the thread title... and to change it to be more descriptive.?
Hey, regarding this issue. USB debugging probably wasn't the cause.
But by enabling and disabling you did fix the cause, because there are two instances that need the second USB port. One is for debugging and the second is for the device to be seen as an external device when you use that USB port to connect it to the computer (in short, MTP protocol for filesharing).
Probably in the Storage settings you turned on the USB toggle for file access. By enabling developer mode and enabling USB debugging, the toggle was automatically turned off once you disabled that.
Or maybe the setting was toggled when you tried to setup the plex server. Not sure what actions trigger that, but now you know the real cause.
If you haven't enabled developer settings, USB debugging won't be turned on by itself. Especially not when the device is practically new and you haven't done anything to it.
So keep this in mind, either using debugging or making your internal storage available over USB will disable that USB port for other devices.

Thanks for providing this insight. Makes total sense as i couldn't understand how that port became unusable for the wireless dongle
My (proprietary radio) USB wireless keyboard stopped typing, though it indicated it was paired to its USB dongle. I tried to pair a Bluetooth keyboard to the Shield TV too, and while it would pair (and accept the passcode typed on the keyboard), it would fail at "connecting" and not work. I tried toggling developer mode, USB debugging, even USB type from Automatic to Compatible and back, no joy.
Then I restarted the Shield TV. It seemed to shut down but didn't start back up - black screen. I power cycled it. When it came back up I was able to pair the Bluetooth keyboard, connect and type, and pair the (proprietary radio) USB wireless keyboard.
I have a Samsung Galaxy A40 which the screen is completely smashed/unresponsive and so I am looking for a way to do screen mirroring to the tv/monitor. Is there a way?
If so what feature do I need on the adaptor/cable to ensure it works for this? If you know of a device, preferably with extra usb slot for a mouse to turn on USB debug mode or simply enable access to backup data.
Am I correct in thinking it needs to have HDMI alt-mode (alternative mode)?
One solution is to replace the screen, but that costs a lot more.
Hi,
My brothers phone screen is basically unusable.
When I connect the phone to the PC it recognises it in Windows but the phone contains no folders. At first I assumed it was because his screen was locked so I connected a OTG and keyboard and using commands managed to get his phone "unlocked" to the home screen.
However this didnt fix the issue.
Reading around it seems I may need USB Debugging enabled (if he hasn't already) but due to not being able to use the screen how would I do that?
Do I need a MICRO USB to HDMI & USB adapter to use a mouse and TV output?
Or is there a way I can fix this through windows using ADB?
At this point we are willing to try anything as all we are looking for is some family photos off of it then binning the phone and I don't want to put £100-200 into the screen replacement just to attempt this data recovery.
All help is greatly appreciated,
Cheers
ADB is the door to any Android device. As long as ADB has not been activated on the device - and the related RSA keys got created - you have no chance to pull out data from device, IMO.
Ok,
Well see the fact when I connect it to windows it shows the phone but not the folders inside, and I can only assume there will be a popup on the screen mentioning to ALLOW/DECLINE transfer etc..
If I use the OTG adapter I can plug my keyboard in and use the sequence SPACE, SPACE, BKSPACE, BKSPACE, then my PIN and ENTER and it unlocks to the home screen.
But because I would need the phone connected by both PC and KEYBOARD at the same time is it possible to get a splitter on the OTG adapter and this would hopefully let me press RIGHT and ENTER to accept the message?
If not then can the phone be connected via HDMI to see if any message is infact popping up??

OK, new to this. To get usb debugging on, click system. About phone, Software information, build number. Click that several times. (AT least 10). You will see a message that you are in developer mode. Go back to home screen. Click settings icon. Scroll to bottom you should now see { } Developers optiions. Click that. Find the section for ADB, enable ADB. Once ADB is up and running you should be able to pull the files. The screen for an android is the desktop, mouse, and keyboard. (PC analogy). You need something to see your icons, something to click, and a keyboard. If OTG acts as a mouse, and you can see the basic display, and have an external keyboard. I think you can do this. I am not sure what OTG is .

1. I cant follow that process as the screen is completely destroyed (no display/no touch), thats why I have been blindly using a keyboard to try and find the setting
2. OTG is ON THE GO , its a small adapter that lets you connect USB devices to your phone.
Sorry about that. I think you are stuck. without some visual clues I think you can not put the phone in developer mode. Did you try just a plugin (via usb) into windows and seeing if there is a pictures folder?
It find the phone in Windows, but wont display the folders.
The OTG splitter I purchased to be able to connect it to the PC and KEYBOARD at same time didnt work as it doesnt supply power (should have checked reviews).
Any other solutions? Or is this a new screen for £200 just to get data?
I purchased another OTG splitter that has a OTG/CHARGE switch so this should let me connect it to the PC and KEYBOARD.
Can anyone give me shortcut keys or step by step on how many times I need to press certain buttons to get down to the USB DEBUGGING section please?
