Hi
I plan to get the s8 but after it gets root sometime later,
will root break functionality like iris scanner?
I heard that root broke Iris feature on Note 7
Speculating here, but probably. KNOX may be used for iris scan, and once you root, KNOX goes away. Along with everything that uses it (Samsung Pay, BYOD, S-Health and so on)

S-Health?? My S5 has always been rooted and I've been using the S5 version and the S7E version of S-Health. Unless something is changed since S5.

You heard correctly. Why wouldn't it break? If the device is compromised why would biometric security still be functional? Or access to sensitive health data be permitted? Or data stored in Secure Folder still be accessible?

Hi everyone,
Let me explain, I used odin to flash the recovery, because of the encryption or whatsoever I wasn't able to transfer via MTP using TWRP in order to get super Su on the phone to root and boot because of the dm-verity thing.
So I wipe data and then I could transfer super Su, get the phone rooted, and boot it up.
Of course Knox was tripped, so i can't access private folder nor S health, but I can live without it. (Ok, if someone know how to make S health work again I take it )
After all of that I tried to setup the Iris scanner again and it scan my eyes, says everything is okay, and goes back to the menu where it is written "add your iris".
No matter how many times I try it seems that it doesn't save my iris properly, or don't save it at all.
Do someone knows something about it ? for those that are rooted do you experience the same issue ?
Thanks in advance

Tons of things got changed. S-Health data was moved to KNOX recently. May be something to do with HIPAA regulations (or not). Either way, S-Health is now in KNOX.
I have my s7e rooted and magisk on it.. Everything works.. Including samsung pay.. And ive passed safetynet on it so lol

Unless something's changed Android Pay doesn't work on rooted phones either. Devs play whack-a-mole with Google though where they get it working for a short time and then Google makes a s/w or server-side change and it breaks again. You should check the current status of Android Pay on rooted phones if mobile payments are important to you.

Hi,
Well I made it half a year without root but I want my adaway back. Adguard just doesn't work very well.
Is it in the meantime possible to root without triggering Knox? I don't really care that much anymore but if it was, I would go for it.
Also, can I root without having to format the phone?
Thanks!

You better not root if you wanna play safe on this side. and about the ad block, format onece and purchase a good anti virus (internet security) which doesn't even cost much. it'll prevent phising web page and adware away from your phone. although android is based on linux. so it won't be virus affected just yet. happy use.

yes, you can root without formatting your device. But knox will be tripped which could cause samsung/dealer to refuse to repair your phone.
Netguard from github is working nicely for adblocking without root

Thanks! The adhell thingy looks fine and seems to work. And it doesn't need a simulated VPN like Adguard.

Hello, I just installed TRWP and custom firmware, so my knox obviously is broken. I was wondering is there a way to make samsung pay work yet? Or maybe Android pay? I really liked nfc payments.
If you have a gear watch you may be able to sideload an older version of SPay onto each and have a working SPay on your watch.
Not sure if that technique works for this device or only non Samsung devices though...
But otherwise, no you won't have working SPay on your 0x1 device. Android Pay probably, yes.

The way Android Pay works is by using a check called SafetyNet. Magisk fools the system with root by being a systemless root so nothing is tampered with, and in a nutshell, SafetyNet passes its checks and such Android Pay works.
Samsung Pay uses a different set of checks which fail majority of the time. There's been a few instances where people have been able to use Samsung Pay with the use of Magisk but is patched rather quickly.

Samsung Pay stores info in KNOX, so blowing your e-fuse kills Samsung Pay for the life of the device. Doubt there's a way around it.

I know this is an old thread but don't want to start a new just for an update.
Still not possible to get it to work with a rooted tripped phone?
Coming from nexus, first thing I did was root and make a nandroid...
Also flashing stock and locking doesn't revert this? How does this fuse work? Is it hardware or how come you can't just flash the original?

It's a fuse located on mainboard which is being "blown" after unlocking the bootloader / rooting. So there's no way to revert this unless you change the mobo on it.... Which I doubt ?
With Magisk, Android Pay is working flawlessly. I'm using it all the time on Note8 port.

Nope and never will work. It's a hardware efuse on the main board of the phone. It's literally trips and burns out. You can't flash stock or anything to revert it.
The only way you can revert it is to buy a new motherboard.

You can use samsung pay on your gear s3 on a rooted phone by hiding samsung pay (gear) in magiskhide and setting it up like normal, make sure you pass safetynet

Unfortunately, once you rooted your Sammy device you can't get features such as Samsung Pay back due to the blown e-fuse. However, rooting with Magisk will let you use Google Pay. I've been using it basically every day for the past 6 months and not once have I missed Samsung Pay. If by any chance your phone doesn't pass the SafetyNet check there is always modules such as MagiskHide Props Config which will let you change your fingerprint to a certified one, therefore passing the SafetyNet check.
This isn't my first time rooting my Android device, I have done it multiple times and I know what to expect and what not to. I recently rooted my S7 Edge Tmo Nougat and I am having problems with the fingerprint sensor. It simply won't work and says there's been an error in the fingerprint sensor. I tried wiping the cache partition and I got not luck. Second of all, I knew this before I rooted, but is there anyway at all for me to be able to use Android Pay or Samsung pay again after rooting? It's probably impossible and I was expecting that, but I thought I ask anyway in case there's a way I haven't heard of. Obviously, Xposed and RootCloak isn't an option seeing how there isn't Xposed for Nougat yet.
Any help with my problems is highly appreciated. Thanks a lot guys.

Hi just got my s8 plus and I'm just wondering I want to root and been searching around about what tripping knox brakes but keep getting mixed views
I will be rooting and flashing a custom Rom and kernel would someone be kind enough to list every app that get broken and is not fixed even by a custom Rom or kernel (like iris scanner,s Health, ect)
As I really want to root but don't want to damage too many apps in the process

No unfortunately not, Knox is a fuse on the motherboard. Once tripped it burns. So far only way to get Knox back would be to change the motherboard

Yes but the apps and system dont read the statuts directly from the bootloader but from the kernel, this is why there is a kernel that has faked 0x0 knox, but the fuse is still blown yes.

You can use terminal to change Knox to 0x0 but still. S health will work and some apps, but not secure folder or Samsung pay
so, knox tripped and rooted on stock unmodified rom :
safety net fail : (no apps like samsung pay, Pokemon go, Mario run, snapchat login ,etc)
no system updates
samsung apps won't work : samsung pass, samsung pay, Shealth, secure folder, issue with private mode on samsung internet,
if you use a custom rom most of stuff CAN be fixed like
safety net pass with magisk hide (root)
s health work
private mode on internet
BUT some are permanent and can't be fixed even with custom rom so once rooted , no way back except buy new phone
samsung pass, samsung pay, secure folder
Remember that once you are rooted and knox counter is tripped (0x1), its irreversible and can't be "unrooted" or be official and reset knox counter even by flashing stock firmware though odin because since galaxy s7 the knox counter is not software related but its hardware. its an electronic fuse and if you root or install custom recovery etc the electronic fuse will broke and broken fuse mean tripped knox counter. this is because even flashing stock firmware is useless, as most of Samsung apps knox related don't only check root but also the knox counter, so unroot won't help. so think twice before rooting your device

its useless, Samsung knox apps dont check if they see 0x0 but it just put some electricity though the knox fuse and if it get though it its ok but if the electricity dont success to get through the fuse it mean its broken so I mean knox is 0x1 and rooted.
fake knox counter is useless as every knox eligibility checks are hardware and not software. fake 0x0 is only for you ^^to reset the counter only way is the replace the motherboard, even Samsung can't reset it

There has to be some hardware abstraction layer, you can't just test the fuse each time, that would mean that the apps have really low level rights/api to do so wich is risky. The bootloader tests the fuse and writes the value to the kernel, wich can be faked to make some apps work.
If the value is checked by apps then there is a software value other than the hardware status.
But dont quote me on that.
For apps that dont work i think there is some selinux policies issues or root gets detected.
Why would devs include the fake 0x0 counter if it was useless ?

No you will not lose S Health. I'm rooted and I use it regularly. But before using it you should edit build.prop file and change the line "ro.config.tima=1" to "ro.config.tima=0".
You can find the file in the root directory.

Yes for both cases.
Samsung Pay checks knox status and since you cannot revert it to its original state, there's no way to get it working.
Magisk can hide root from Android Pay. You just have to make sure SafetyNet is passing. It's not 100%, sometimes Google change things and it starts failing again, but you can try anyway.
