Hi all
I'm currently rooted, using slimkat 4.4.4 on my old trusty nexus 7 2012 wifi edition. I want to update to a new rom, but there are so many to choose from I'm a little confused with features - I wondered which is the bare minimal build like slimroms?
Thanks

I saw a suggestion to go for CM 12 from an expert on xda. If I find the link I'll put it here for you.

A custom ROM is basically a modified version of the AOSP version. Custom ROMs are mostly built and developed by enthusiasts. They add new features e.g. customisation or functionality. They also provide bug fixes.
On non-Nexus devices they bring the newest Android version to devices that are not officially supported by the manufacturers. This doesn't play a role foot you, because Nexus devices get the updates immediately after their announcement.
You can install whatever custom ROM you want as long as it is made fit the Nexus 4. You may brick your phone otherwise.
Just look for a guide for rooting and install a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM.

I've only flashed CM10 and paranoid android, CM10 is just so good i don't really see any reason to flash anything else. It's also pretty much stock as far as ui so not hard to get used to.

I recently got a Nexus 4 and rooted and installed Carbon and everything is great.. except I think I'm still using a stock kernel (no clue). I found a few that I liked however they all mention things like "only for JSS15J or JWR66Y" etc... Mine says "JSS15Q"... My question is: what is with the different versions? and does that mean I'm using a Nexus 7 firmware!?!?!
your help is appreciated!

JSS is for Nexus 7 2013 tablets and JWR for phones and 2012 tablets originaly i think.
Ah thanks man. I'm curious now as to why some of the ROMs in the development section use JSS firmware instead.
Here is some insights about 4.3 versions issues:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44052881&postcount=1
Basically a JSS rom is a rom built from AOSP sources, and a JWR rom is based on the stock 4.3 firmware built for the Nexus 4.
Kernels can not be interchanged, doing that will cause screen tearing, becuase AOSP has some never gpu driver commits for the Nexus 4.
Guys, thank you so much for this enlightenment.. what would we do with out this community.
Long live Android developers!
My previous boyfriend bought me a new Nexus 7 (the 2013 edition), and rooted it for me.. He also did something called unlocking the boot loader and installed a new recovery called TWRP I think... I have been receiving notices of updates since then (directly from google - ota?) and they don't work, so I was wondering if there was anyone that had already tried the latest Cyanogenmod on it? I've had that loaded on previous devices in the past and it worked great!
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes, download the lasted CM from Kangs in the developer section, and install that. the updates that you keep getting are already included.
Always love me some CM, been running it since the unofficial releases were out, Now running the nightlies.

Thank You for the tip. I saw that one in the developer section; how does it compare to the one originally from CyanogenMod?

That is great to hear! I really like it on my other devices and I'm running the nightlies also. Do you recommend the original CyanogenMod version or the one from Kangs?

Hey everyone,
I recently updated my Nexus 7 to 4.4.2, but I am having trouble finding a ROM which has PIE AND expanded desktop functionality. Are there any that have this? I was previously using Paranoid Android which I loved, but it doesn't seem like that's ready for 4.4.2 yet. Thanks guys!

Hey bro! I have the n900t but use hlte roms as well. I have not found a PA build. I think hlte was originally going to be a legacy device for pa, back in like march or April, but hlte was removed from that legacy list for an unknown reason.
You can, however, use carbon rom which is an aosp ROM with a lot of features. It has many of the pa features, like hover, peek, pie etc. I don't think I've seen a tablet ui setting for it, but I think you should be able to use xposed for that, do you know what that is?

hum, wierd that they removed hlte :s, Yes, I do know what exposed is, and I saw there was some kind of module that were supposed to force tablet ui but since google remover tablet ui from the framework I'm not able to get it, I'm only getting phablet ui which isn't even close to tablet ui hopefully some devs manage to merge the tablet part from earlier versions of android so that all users with at least larger screens could use it xD
Paranoid Android arrived!
Thanks to @encho we now can run Paranoid Android on our Note 3.
It is an alpha version, lacking most if not all PA features. But it is fast and it is Paranoid.
[ROM][AOSPA] Paranoid Android 5.1 Alpha [2015-Apr-27][Unofficial]
Have fun!!
