Official OTA update on a rooted device... - Moto G4 Questions & Answers

...first things first - xt1625, build number-MPJ24.13964.
I wanna update this puppy to Nougat, but can’t seem to find a stable custom ROM. Can I flash the official firmware release? I’m assuming I’ll lose root access. Anyone point me towards a stable ROM?

I wouldn't do OTA. Don't know why I put that, I'd dl and flash from recovery

Newbie requesting help to upgrade from 4.2.2 to Lollipop

Hello,
I have a rooted i337 with MDL baseband, running stock 4.2.2 firmware. I am currently out of the US and therefore cannot receive any OTA. I want to upgrade to Lollipop or Marshmallow based custom ROMs, esp those that can still use the IR feature of the S4.
Can anyone guide me on how I do this upgrade, without bricking my phone? Would truly appreciate your help. Thanks.
Have you tried running ota updates via wifi without a SIM card in the phone.
To run a custom rom, you would need to install a custom recovery to flash the rom. Some mm and LP ROMs may not work with a 4.2.2 modem and bootloader.
If you want to use a custom ROM, DO NOT take any OTA updates. If you take an OTA and it is successful, then you will no longer be able to install a custom ROM.
Here is the Cyanogenmod thread to install CM to your phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3008609
If you would like to update to official ATT/Samsung lollipop(there is also a way to have root)[remember, once you take an official update from MDL, then you will no longer be able to install a custom ROM and you may never be able to get Marshmallow]: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2926642

[Q] Revert to Lollipop

Hey guys...
I have been running the official 3.0 beta for a week and now I want to revert to 2.2.1.
I know I have to downgrade TWRP (right?) but I find the posts a little clttered som I need a straight answer.
What do I need to go back? I would like to keep a modded recovery and I intend to root it afterwards.

just follow this tutorial and flash back your 2.2.1 rom and then flash SuperSU to root it
I read that one but I´m unsure that the recovery is a modded one (TWRP)... cause I wanna keep that. But from what I understand I have to flash an older TWRP for Lollipop?
Edit: Nevermind... I got it. Now I just have to find the Stock 2.2.1

Anything to update if I'm on OF1? I've been getting Super SU messages

Last I left off, I had all but given up on updating Android due to my inability to flash a custom recovery. Any changes?
Changes to what?
Is Stang5litre's Ediition 5.0 OC1 MDK,SS,FF/OC1/OF1 ROM the preferred alternative rom for someone rooted and on OF1? I see his instructions but want to confirm that it isn't for someone who is on OC1?
Any other (stable) developments for the OF1 build I should be aware of?

Flashing New Emojis

I am on 6.0 Marshmallow due to Moto X Pure not being updated. I am running stock. I really want to be able to see the emojis that my friends send me. If i root and flash Nougat Emojis? will that prevent me from getting the Nougat update via OTA?

Don't get your hopes up for nougat ota anyways...? But jokes aside you can root with magisk and still be able to take an OTA, but I dont know if it's risky, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but i was looking at this thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/ota-updates-magisk-t3476091/page1
Since magisk is systemless, you can get the ota, and from what I get you can flash it with flashfure, but that's over my head, you'll have to do your own reading on that I don't know if you use any apps which use safety net right now(pokemon go, Android pay, Netflix, etc...) But if you head over to the magisk forums the latest stable version is v12 but it doesn't pass safety net. If safety net is necessary for your needs you'll have to flash the latest beta, and then flash away with the nougat emojis!!!
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions, and I think after taking an ota you'd have to reflash magisk to gain root again but you'd still have the emojis without root anyways.
Edit : as I wrote that last line it occurred to me...you only need an unclocked bootloader and a custom recovery like TWRP to flash zips! Check some guides on how to unlock the bootloader and flash twrp. So you wouldn't even need root as you don't need to touch the system partition. I hope the above info is useful info anyways, but for the emojis, head over to the TWRP site and check the Downloads for Clark, flash twrp, and then flash the emojis!

Can I just flash a stock recovery to my rooted stock to get ota?

Hello, I'm on the fence here.
Here I sit with my dear moto g4 play which I am about to root.
The only question standing in my way is regarding future nougat update (In case Lenovo actually releases it).
Below are my questions.
If I only root my phone now will I be able to get OTA once I restore the stock recovery?
I do not wish to try new roms but just have the root and be able to easily get future nougat update when it arrives, what would be the best way to do this?
