XOOM2/Xyboard Everything root and more!
From 26/03/2014, I will no longer be updating this post as I no longer have the device and Motorola won't be upgrading the device further. Please instead of sending me PMs, go to the Q&A board or post your comment on this thread.
Note: This method will not work on Windows 8. Only Windows XP, Vista, 7, Linux and Mac OS X is supported.
Root Method - Honeycomb
1. Download the Windows version here, or the Linux/OSX version here.
2. Your Computer must have Motorola Drivers installed before rooting and connect your device with debugging on to your computer via USB. (Mac Users don't need drivers)
3. Extract the zip file from the download link, and run “run.bat” (on Windows) or “run.sh” from a terminal (on Linux/OSX)
4. Your device should reboot a few times during the process, don't worry.
5. Then you should see a finished message on the Root Method Window. At this point your device is safe to be removed from the computer.
7. As you are running Honeycomb if you are reading this then you should be receiving the ICS OTA soon. So lets backup your root so you can restore everything root after the upgrade (saves time). Download OTA Rootkeeper and backup root.
6. Well Done! You have root. Enjoy root and be safe.

Root Method - Ice Cream Sandwich
1. Connect your Xoom2/Xyboard via USB to your Windows PC. Install Motorola Drivers from here.
2. Under Settings > Developer Options > Hit the "Enable USB Debugging" selection.
3. Download the Root Installer from here. (Says for Droid RAZR but also works on Xyboard and Xoom 2]
4. Unzip the download.
Bootstrap/Safestrap[Custom Recovery]
Waring: DO NOT proceed if you are inexperienced. bootstrap is messy and is only needed once we have ROMs cooking. All questions about the recovery ask in the developer thread.
1. Install the Bootstrap APK file.
2. Allow Superuser Powers.
3. Read the instructions which is displayed on the user interface.
5. You will now see a splashscreen after you reboot (before boot animation), here you can decide if you want to enter recovery or continue with boot.
-Method Under Constuction-
Unroot or temporary unroot
Temp Unroot - If you need to unroot for any reason and come back at any time, then install OTA Rootkeeper and then select the option "temp unroot). This will remove root without restarting and you can restore by a touch of a button.
Full remove of Root - If you want to complety remove root all together, if you need to send in your device for repair or trading your device. Install Ginger Unroot and continue with the onscreen instructions. This application has confirmed to work on the Xoom2/Xyboard.​

This root method should work on all Motorola Devices running honeycomb or gingerbread. Try it out and see if it does

I did the US ICS update on My UK Xoom so im on 4.03 at the moment - i believe Motorola added some file which prevents me so far from rooting with the current one click programs ? so would it be safe to try this ?

The method is safe to try but Email Dan if you have any issues when rooting.

Suppose i root my device and if i need to use my warranty at later point of time.
Is there is anyway that i can hide Motorola that i have rooted my device.

I wouldn't email Dan, I'd post it here... Dan probably has more than enough things going on than to answer all rooting questions on here...
This root method very well may work on the Xoom with ICS, never hurts to try it. I don't see how you can't root with an existing method though, with the Xoom being fully unlockable and all...

the thing is that maybe you can, but you might not want to Unlocking wipes all your data, apps, etc and also permanently sets a variable stating that your warranty is gone.
It might, for example, be desireable to create a backup of all your apps and data using titanium backup, which requires root, before unlocking your xoom.

Does this mean that more knowledgeable folks can create custom ROMs now, or does that still require an unlocked bootloader?

No, we need to figure out a bootstrap for custom roms. No custom kernels.
Also, the method to fix adb remount is reset every other boot by the kernel, init.rc rebuilds local.prop on reboot as a failsafe and can't be changed without a custom kernel...

Just to let you know this does not work on all Xoom models like you say. Here is my thread with my specs in it. I have tried it three times following the directions to a T and it never gets past;
"[*] Initiating Phase 1...
[*] This may take a few minutes, don't mind the buzzing."
I have now let it run for over an hour each time and it never goes any further and my Xoom is still not rooted. It did not even ever reboot on its own. Does anyone have any suggestions? If not I'll just use some threads 1 & 2, I got from a friend.

Not this method. It is supposed to unlock and root motorola devices in 10 minutes without deleting any files. When I read about this on android police I was very excited as I never rooted because I only needed Superuser for my Xoom (never was interested in ROMs) and could never justify scraping everything just for this.
I tested the files here on a windows 7 machine... if I run from command at step 2. I get su permission denied. If I run the batch file I get "failed backup" loop after the device has been detected
tried the portable one click .exe found in "Motofail: Universal Motorola Android Root Tool (Portable)" works perfect on my bionic
obviously fails to remount as it does not include local.prop from step 5. so it's not working on xoom
This is the most awesome root utility I ever came along. It took something like 6 mins to root my phone without losing any files, if I can get it to run on my Xoom this will be just a dream come true!

Update: This root method does not support the Original Xoom. Confirmed by Dan.

Can't get root trying all known metheds

I've tried with Kingo and Vroot and that was a no go so I tried Root de la Vega and that did not work. It would start downloading onto the phone and then about 30 seconds in I would keep getting a secure check fail (cache) what does that mean and how can i get around it. Every time that happens it soft bricks and I would have to Odin back to stock. I just bought my phone on Friday the 28th of March. Is is possible that they have patched that way of rooting in later phones like mine.??

Even though Kingo says its not successful, check your apps for superuser and then use a root checker. It told me it failed until I unplugged it. And root checker said that I was rooted. Halfway through the process make sure you accept the app for a camera. Dan

You need to do the following:
1. Load the latest driver from samsung for your phone... The Mobile Drivers...
2. Make sure you restart your computer after drivers install
3. Then plug in your N3 and let windows do its stuff and you may need to restart again after its done installing
4. Make sure you are in debug mode and unknown sources is checked
5. Then you need to download this file (older ver of kingo) (THANKS to BluPhant)
6. This is what worked for me and now i have a rooted phone...

How to Downgrade Firmware on AT&T’s S5 Active SM-G870A and get Root Access after Augu
It took me over a week to search through threads and learn how to root my S5 Active SM-G870A after I installed the new August 2014 update and then later discovered the SD card issue (i.e. needing root access to allow apps to write to it).
Anyway, these forums helped but I had to piece lots together in order to do it right and make sure that I was not going to destroy a $600 phone.
Below is a compilation of what I found. I do not take any credit for the original contents. I have simply organized what I have found in many other threads so that others searching to resolve the same issue can do so in less time than me. Also, I put this together so that I do not feel like my time was wasted hunting all of this down!
How to Downgrade Firmware on AT&T’s S5 Active SM-G870A and get Root Access after August 2014 Update
Step 1: Downgrade your Phone’s Firmware to an Earlier Version

Before Starting:
1. Download and Install the latest Samsung USB Drivers.
2. Download and install the latest version of Odin (you may need to extract it using a zip program).
3. Download and extract the firmware file: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=31669 (May 9th, 2014) OR HERE.
4. Make sure USB debugging is checked under “Settings/Developer Options” (If you don't know how to do that, go to "About Device" in Settings, and click on "Build Number” 5 times to unlock “Developer Options").
5. Back up your phone using any backup program that does not require root, just in case.
Flash Instructions:
6. Open Odin v3.09.
7. Reboot phone in Download Mode (press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons).
8. Connect phone to your PC and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin.
9. Add the un-zipped firmware file to AP / PDA (Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked).
10. Click the start button, sit back and wait a few minutes.
You should see a bar at the bottom of your phone indicating progress and also in Odin. Once the phone restarts Odin will check to see if the firmware flash was a success. If it is, the “System” box will now display “Success.” Congratulations, you have downgraded your phone’s firmware, now you can root it using towelroot (www.towelroot.com).
Step 2: Install Towelroot
Before Starting:
1. Disable antivirus software on your phone. Towelroot is an exploit: it is how you get root. So your antivirus (if it’s worth a damn) will flag it.
2. Make sure that your phone can install application from unknown sources: Settings>Security>Unknown Sources>Check.
Towelroot Instructions:
3. Using your phone’s browser navigate to www.towelroot.com.
4. Click on the lambda in order to download the tr.apk file.
5. Locate the file on your phone and click on it. Chose the Android Package installer.
6. Follow the additional instructions.
Step 3: Do I have REALLY have Root Access?
1. Go to the Play Story and search “root checker.”
2. Download and install the app with the same name.
3. Run it. If it is a success, then download and install SuperSU.
I recommend getting Titanium Backup and paying for the pro-version ($5.99). Doing so will allow you to disable the AT&T notifications (“Freeze” AT&T Update) that will bug you once you downgrade your firmware, and there are lots of other things you can do with it now that your phone it rooted.
This “complete” intro guide should help anyone (especially newbies) root their S5 Active SM-G870A in a safe way if they have upgrade their phone in August 2014 or after.

UPDATE-Post Flash/Root
After working with the downgrade for a few days everything works fine except I lost the ability to use the default e-mail app. I noticed an "email" failure upon the first boot after the flash, but I ignored it because I was so focused on rooting.
This is not a big deal to me since I was not in love with the stock e-mail app to begin with. I have since found acceptable alternatives (that are actually better IMO). But if this is a big deal to you just be aware. It may be the firmware downgrade or it may have just happened to me. However, some people in the other thread mentioned losing GPS, but mine works fine (as does everything else).

GS5 Firmware Download
Whenever I go to the SamMobile website, and go to the page for my phone (Samsung Galaxy S5 AT&T). When I download the file, I'm not able to extract the file because there is nothing in it. What am I doing wrong/does anyone have a direct download link. I tried googling around, but I couldn't find anything that worked.

Like you, I have been scouring the Web trying to downgrade my sm-g900a back to Kitkat since Lollipop and At&t's locked bootloader prohibits rooting or any kind of customization. Whatsoever. So I really appreciate you taking the time to compile these steps! I am wondering however, is there a way to use Odin on a device other than a PC or Mac? For example an LG tablet? Sorry if that's a noob question. I know how and have successfully rooted previous Samsung galaxies using my PC Odin. I'm just away from home and only have a tablet with me. And this Lollipop cap has got to go ! Really appreciate your response.

I had the same exact problem you did. I followed the link. Thanks for that! I got a PASS from Odin! But I am still stuck on the recovery boot screen. Doing a Data wipe and Cache wipe then restart doesn't work. Still stuck on that page. Any suggestions? Every forum I find just says to perform the data wipe and cache wipe then restart and I should be golden, except I'm not.

Hey @electric101, sorry, I upgraded to an S7 and have been using another account. This guide actually applied to both, which is also the case for most custom roms. I actually owned the Active myself, often flashed and rooted with 900a methods. Hope that helps, good luck!

thats interesting.... the guy who posted the actual guide (AptLogic) told me that it didnt work with the 870A .... did you try it on an unrooted 870A running 5.0 or newer? when i try it fails on the first step of flashing experimental firmware using odin 3.11
if you were able to maybe i'm just not doing something right....

I have been trying for a while to Root the device, no hope yet.
I'll let you know what I have tried so far, also I wanted to include some refrences "new here, sorry"
First off I tried with Z3X "Samsung Tool Pro"
to do anything on it but flashing stock Rom not gonna work without Rooting.
the app actually roots some devices automatically and for sure mine is not included
so I tried to manualy root it using other methods:
1- normal well known way flashing auto root file using "Odin3" flashing auto root file downloaded through "chainfire" same issue auto root file is not there.
2- downloaded and installed one click root "website uses just the name, easily found on google" that one is so easy to use!
* just enable debugging mode, connect the phone and click Root. (no Root available now)
3- Downloaded and installed kingOroot "website uses just the name, easily found on google" same steps exactly. and same issue
4- Flashing TWRP;
Download TWRP for S6 edge plus: (I mean Compatible)
dl.twrp.me/zenlte for me flashing fails.
also made sure that OEM is enabled and track phone is diabled.
and definitely USB Debugging mode also enabled.

change the version of twrp?you can download"official twrp app",then choose your device type, it will show the last compatible version for your phone

Is TWRP installed or not? if so, theres a nougat supersu root without kernel install for s6e+

I've done all the above that op has done as well before stumbling on this post. twrp doesnt have an exact flash for g928a at&t version. only thing that popped up recently is some guy on youtube showing he did it but thats it for his 2 minute video no description and no replies in comments. hoping someone is willing to spill the goods for this specific device to root. G930TUVS9CSC1 Root Guide

Hello!
These are a few files and guides for rooting a G930T with the Android Oreo 8.0.0 G930TUVS9CSC1 update.
Most Samsung apps, such as S-Health and Samsung Pay, will not function as Knox has detected root.
I've included a link to a patched S-Health app that allows for step-counting, but HR and Sp02 functionalities are missing.
Read all of this and the original guide linked at the bottom before performing any steps towards rooting the device.
-ROOT GUIDE-
-Backup any data on the device.
-Enable "OEM Unlock" in the Developer Options menu on the device.
-Reboot the device into Download mode. ODIN v3.13 should recognize it with an "Added!!"
-Add the v9 Bootloader into the "BL" entry box. Nothing else should be added or checked.
-Begin the transfer with "Start."
-Once the phone has rebooted into Android, open CMD with "cmd-here.exe."
-Enter "root.bat" into the command prompt window to begin the root process.
-Follow the root directions. There will be descriptions of each step in the CMD window, so read them carefully.
-Once the device has been rebooted and rooted, FlashFire, SuperSU, and other apps will appear on the device.
-Use FlashFire to flash the VoLTE icon removal zip. Check both mounting boxes for the flash to succeed.
The guide has been completed with hopefully no issues.
If for any reason there has been an issue or you'd like to unroot the device, stock files have been linked at the bottom.
In my experience, a factory reset and a flash of the stock files should undo most user errors.

Can somebody help me out? I am trying to go back to stock and despite having a free membership on sam, it will not allow me to download the stock firmware. It keeps telling me to sign up even though I am a free member. Free members should be able to get the latest firmware at a slow speed without paying correct? I dunno why somebody just doesn't toss these files up on a dropbox or google drive.

Root worked . But i'm trying to return to stock because a deal came up with Tmobile and i want to return everything to stock for a possible trade in.

OK I have read every post in this thread and now my brain hurts. It's been a long day so I am probably just being stupid, however.... I have a 930 with bootloaderv9 I believe (g930tuvsacsg1). Can I follow the rooting guide but use the 930u engineer to gain root or is my phone still a no love zone>

I'm in the same boat. From what I can tell, it seems like T-Mobile added bootloader 9 to the update, but I can't confirm whether using the version linked to in this post will work without issue or if the versions have to be a perfect match to not fail/brick/trip Knox.
All I really want is to root my old S7 so I can play around with root-level access. I'm not using it for mobile data, just tethering to my current phone's mobile hotspot, so it makes no difference to me if I end up with a T-Mobile tweak of Android or something more like a stock version.

Hello! I'm a newbie in all of this, so forgive me if I'm asking something obvious.
I used this thread to root my Galaxy S7 (SM-G930T), Baseband version G930TUVS9CSC1, Android version 8.0, but I can't edit the hosts file.
Root Checker says Root Access is properly installed but when I try to edit and save the hosts file I get a message that I can't save because it's a read-only file system.
I tried to edit using ES File Explorer and Cx File Explorer with no luck.
A long time ago I had this same phone rooted with Android version 6.0 and I was able to edit the hosts file.
Any idea how to fix this? All help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I found a solution. Another file explorer worked. I have no idea why the others didn't.
