How to delete OTA update file - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Immediately after I've downgraded from Lollipop to Kitkat, the phone started downloading the Lollipop update (before I was able to disable the auto-update option).
I want to delete that file, but I can't find it. According to many how-tos I've found it's supposed to be in the /cache folder, but it isn't. I've tried searching for "fota" and "n9005" (because most firmware names have that string in it), but didn't find it.
My phone is rooted.
I've also looked at the Software Updater app in Settings/applications/all to try to clear the cache, but it says it only has 12kb cache.
Does anyone have an idea where I could find the file?

Look for it in /data/fota

Perfect, there it was! Thank you so much.
Any idea how to get rid of the update message? It keeps asking to install the update although I've removed the file.
I've read to accept the installation. Then it will reboot, and nothing will happen. But I don't dare doing that. Are there other ways? Or is this method safe?
Thanks!

Freeze the system updater package using Titanium backup.

Any other options which don't require the need to install extra apps?

Simply rename the package (something like SamsungUpdates.apk.BAK) then reboot.

And isn't that Samsung updater necessary for other things?

No, and in case you face problems, rename it back to .apk
Or, you can go to Settings/Application Manager and disable the Notifications of Google Play Services.

And how about the option to click on "install". Will that work to get rid of the notifications, since there is no file anymore to install?

Sorry, i can't recommend something i didn't tried myself. But i think you don't risk anything by trying.

I'll have a look into it a bit further, and I'll let you know if I do it and what its result is.

I've finally gotten the guts to press the "install" button, and it immediately said that OTA updates aren't supported on modified devices. Gone notification, even after reboot. Yay

I ran into this problem too running the Sprint based Fresh rom. While Jcase's Market Fix will fix the problem with missing protected apps, it wont fix the missing Verizon apps.
To do that, I used Root Explorer on my phone and opened the "build.prop" file located in the System folder. Open the file in the included text editor and scroll down to until you see this line:
"ro.cdma.home.operator.numeric"
The correct value for the line should be "310012". Sprint roms will have the value as "310120".
Save the changes and exit. After reboot, check your Market. The right-most tab on the main page will read "Verizon" now instead of "Downloads".
Or flash this handy zip from recovery.

I know this is probably elementary, but is there a step by step post anywhere for flashing a zip file?
I just rooted last night and put the first custom ROM on my phone. This is uncharted territory for me. Everything is great so far except for these missing apps.
I tried the root explorer method, but it would only let me read the text, not edit.
EDIT: Ignore this post. GREAT SUCCESS!! Too easy.

Thank you.
I was doing it the hard way - download the app in a HTC/VZW Rom, copy them to SD, restore the Sprint ROM (Aloysius V12) and install.
Looking at them now in the Market.

I don't know if there's anything to get rid of and I don't want to do a factory reset without being sure because I have just finished customizing my Nexus 4. Is there any way to check if it still exists?
Hi,
With a file explorer check mainly in /data/data, /data/app and /data/app-lib if there is the app, app package name, or anything related to this app.
Or easier with the file explorer do a search with the app name or a part of the package name.
If there are some files related to the app, delete them (but be sure it's related to this app...).
The only thing I have in /data folder is a log.txt file which contains one line that looks like (X for folders):
../../../X/X/X/X/X/ connect_ads_manager_android.cpp(29):AdsManager::adsmanager w(320) h(48)

The log.txt is related to scriptmanager if I'm not wrong.
The paths you mentioned don't exist in my /data folder.. (root path)
You are rooted?
In your file explorer have you an option like "Show hidden files / folders"? If yes activate it.
I am not rooted, I am using File Explorer and I've checked the "hidden files" option.
Where is the data folder located?

Were you trying to get an app for free? :/
The best thing to do would be a factory reset. That way, you'd have the peace of mind that there is no leftover files remaining on the phone.

I don't think anyone can say with absolute certainty if you are safe. They can tell you steps to try to see if any remnants are left behind but that's about it. I personally think you should run the flash-all.bat file which comes with the stock image to wipe and clean everything.

Putting it into data/app installs is, fixing permissions is just so it will show in the app drawer
Make sure you have Security => Unknown Apps checked and Verify Apps unchecked
Apps install fine for me by clicking an .apk
Use Root Explorer or ES File Manager, it's probably the MY Files preventing it.

hey just root your phone with cf root download rootbrowser and replace the downloaded version with the one in system/app
then reboot
Hi guys!
I'm bumping an ancient thread here, hope that's okay with you.
I have this old S4+ lying around. I love it's Gallery app due to the built-in possibility to losslessly trim MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) videos by cutting to nearest keyframe, and also lossless rotation by changing the rotation metadata flag of the MP4 file in question. This simple feature is not implemented in "modern" Gallery apps, or well at least not in the OnePlus 5T I'm using today. So, I was thinking I could extract the .APK from my S4+ (running Android 5.x) and put it in my OP5T (running Android 8.x) without too much headache. Guess if I was wrong.
I get the error about that app was not installed. After browsing around on e.g. ApkMirror, I ultimately found a Samsung Galaxy derived Gallery .APK that I could install, it was a very early version (v1.x.something) which has the cutting feature, but not the rotation (flag changing) feature. So, this ancient Gallery3D .apk installed well, but not the one on my own Galaxy S4+.
So, what could be my issue? Is the .APK flagged to be installed as a system app, and due to my OP5T not being rooted I don't have access too /system/app/, therefor the error? Could it be that simple? If so, is it possible the modify the .APK to install as in /data/app/ instead? Of course I'd resign the APK with some dummy/androiddebug signature afterwards to make installation possible.
Could it be some silly (not really needed) demand listed in the AndroidManifest.xml of the APK in question? If so, is it possible to replace the AndroidManifest.xml with a very "basic" one listing more or less no demands, and re-wrap everything with new signature?
I'm really investigating all my options __except__ for having to root my OnePlus!
I figured that I could get a more specific error message from ADB than by just trying to install the .APK through the phone interface.
So, here goes..
Code:
C:\>adb.exe install F:\Galleri_com.sec.android.gallery3d.apk
adb: failed to install F:\Galleri_com.sec.android.gallery3d.apk: Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_APK: Package couldn't be installed in /data/app/com.sec.android.gallery3d-RAEW5FZ4VBWqTWXx48LPmQ==: Package /data/app/com.sec.android.gallery3d-RAEW5FZ4VBWqTWXx48LPmQ==/base.apk code is missing]
What does this tell me?

The Galaxy S4 and most Samsung devices has a second framework app, twframework-res.apk, that only works with their apps. Here's the fun part: the existing Android framework-res.apk is modified by Samsung so both framework apps are required by a given Samsung app to function. Even better is that you cannot simply port the app and twframework-res.apk to a totally different device and expect it to function. You'd have to port the framework-res.apk as well, and with that apk being a system file, you'd soft brick your device after copying it and rebooting.
The tl;dr here? What you're attempting won't work due to Samsung modifications to Android.

[Q] help with disabling OTA update

I'm with T-Mobile if that helps or changes anything, running 4.2.2. Now, I've gotten my phone to stop bugging me to install the OTA update. But the problem is the OTA update is still downloading in the background, it's just that I'm not being bugged by my phone to update it (i.e. there's no icon showing up in the notification bar). It becomes a sort of "silent update." So why is this a problem for me?
Because I'm on T-Mobile's cheapest plan which is the 500mb data plan. Each time the OTA downloads it eats up 155mb. And twice already this billing cycle it's done it, so that's 310mb of data wasted.
There are posts saying to use Titanium Backup Pro and freezing an app called Software Update MUC, and another post referring to the file as Software Update 2.3.0.5, but on my phone (using TB Pro) there's no file starting with "Software" anything.
So how do I stop my phone from downloading the OTA all together? Please help. Thanks.
Just install the update, that will make it stop for good
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk
Sorry, forgot to mention doing that won't work. For some reason my phone doesn't properly install OTA updates. I don't mind being stuck on 4.2.2. I just want the OTA downloads to stop in the first place.

I've done that already. I renamed the file to otacerts.zip.back (instead of .bak). I assume that doesn't make any difference. I believe renaming the file is what is causing my phone to not show the OTA icon in the notification bar. But as I said, the issue for me is that my phone is still downloading the update itself.
Any other ideas?

I don't have a system/priv-app folder, either. I'm on stock rom, but I removed as much bloat as I can, including certain apps I find no use for (e.g. double-tap, voice command, etc). Maybe this will help: I used Root Explorer's search feature and searched for "fota", and here's what I think are the most "relevant" results:
/lgdms.fota.rc
/lgdms.fota_update.rc
/etc/fota
/etc/permissions/com.lge.fota.xml
/system/framework/com.lge.fota.jar
/system/framework/com.lge.fota.odex
Does this help? Anyone?
