If you are on 7.1.1 (I'm on A2017G), then I have noticed the same thing. Phone screen wakes up while on a call. I have to take the phone away from my head and put it back for the screen to shut off again.
Hopefully this will be solved in the final 7.1.1 release for the Global version.
Im on a2017g too

On my AT&T Galaxy S4, when I make a call the screen goes black when my face is next to the phone. This is good.
However, when I take my face away the screen will NOT turn back on. If I hit the [Power] or [Home] buttons, it will sometimes turn back on, but often times it requires several presses or requires me to wait several seconds until the phone turns back on.
I've tested this on stock and several ROMs...
Does anybody else have this problem?
If so, how do I fix it?
Pick up a can of compressed air and blow in the earphone. Sure enough the proximity sensor works perfectly now. I have solved this problem doing this. Tell me something

You can test your proximity sensor readings here. It should turn the screen green and vibrate the phone constantly while your hand is in proximity. You can also see the numerical readings. The sensor works to about 6 inches.
If its not acting right, then you need to use faux kernel or you have a hardware failure.
If it is acting right, then use a better rom.
I seem to be having this issue on stock rom. When I bring my hand close to the sensor in diagnostic mode it goes green...but it doesn't stop when I remove my hand and there's nothing nearby. This seems to mirror the experience...where the phone goes black during a call, but doesn't wake up when it's removed.

Yes, exactly!
I've flashed back to stock and tried that test screen. The sensor is OK at first, then I move my hand over it and it turns green and stays that way even after I remove my hand.
It seems like the sensor is half-working but gets stuck in the "on" position...
that sucks. i guess its time to contact samsung about warranty. just make sure theres no dirt on the sensor or anything

This is exactly what I done only I used a straw and I blew down it like hell and it cleared the problem. My phone was due to be returned to be fixed under warranty today but I tried a last ditch attempt and with the straw and blowing down it into the earpiece (aimed slightly towards the proximity sensor) I managed to sort the problem. It seems a little dirt or dust gets on the sensor and makes it malfunction.
Give it a whirl to see if it will work
Greetings!
I have three Nexus 4s all having the same problem: The screen turns off when the phone rings and I have to press the power button to turn it on so I can press the button to pick up the phone.
I'm new to Rooting and customizing. My stock 4.2 build had the problem of the screen going black when I tried to calling or receiving a call. It went black during Skype and Viber calls too. I took off the screen protector and it's still happening.
I then rooted it, it still happened. I installed CyanogenMod, it still happened. Then I learned it had something to do with the proximity sensor. I then tried to load franco kernel on it and I found out that you needed a JSS ROM, so I now loaded Paranoid Android onto the phone. Then GAPPS and the Franco Kernel.
Device: Nexus 4
ROM name: Pandroid Android
Build: pa_mako-4.3-BETA4-20140513
Kernel: franco.Kernel-nightly-r207
It's suppose to be like this. The screen will go off so you won't press anything on the screen with your ear. And you're right, it's not a bug, just the proximity sensor working.
See if there's an option in call settings to not use/turn off proximity sensor during calls, some roms have this option. I think you can also do it with and app or xposed module.

Yes, but it's malfunctioning like it is for a lot of other users. The solutions I've found are mostly for Samsung S2 & S3 phones.
I've checked my phone app, it doesn't have the turn phone off setting.
Ex. My most annoying problem is when I want to check messages, the volume is too low and the screen stays black persistently despite repeat pressing of the power button.
When I want to put on speakerphone, how do I keep it on? The phone keeps turning the screen off.
Skype gives a lot of problems, but that could be because the program is buggy.
You mean the screen go off but doesn't turn on after you end the call? I had this problem on stock, but couldn't find a solution. Even on custom roms it happened sometimes for me (CM and old Slim builds), but don't happen anymore with recent SlimRom builds.

Yep, that's whats happening.
I'm putting SlimRom down on my shortlist.
Out of nowhere, my proximity sensor isn't shutting off the screen when I make a call anymore, but now this weird "lock" comes up where when you place a call, you have to unlock the phone on the left in order to bring up the dialer, and the right has an end call button.
this literally just started happening today. I haven't changed any settings, and I'm rooted so I'm not accepting any OTA updates.
how did this happen? why isn't the prox sensor working for calls anymore to shut the screen off?
That has happened to me twice usually wiping Dalvik and cache in recovery and rebooting fixes it for me

yeah that's quite odd. did a reboot and it's fixed. weird.
It is quite weird but it's been a problem with LG since the G3 that's the first time I saw that screen anyway

Wonder if it's just a failsafe for when it has problems detecting the proximity sensor. Some kinda glitch

Hi,
My Axon 7 has develop a strange problem. The screen shut off when ever an object, for example my hand or finger pass close to the top right corner.
I'm not even touching the phone. It closes the screen from about 1 " on top of this location.
I really don't understand what is going on !?!?!
The top right corner is where is located the proximity and light sensor. So your problem comes from this sensor.

Thank you for your help. It's what I thought but wasn't sure.
I found the problem. My phone app "Drupe" was causing the problem for some reason.
It was acting like I was always on call. Even after a reboot.

Lift to wake gesture - check if they're off or on.
Double tap to wake - " "
Check that pocket mode is on.
Are you using a custom kernel??
my phone is all stock. my gesture is off. it is happening even if my phone is on a table it keeps waking up randomly

Weird.
Try without a case, give the screen a big clean..make sure it's spotless.
Beyond that I'm not too sure. It's quite odd. Is Bluetooth on? Could something be trying to communicate with it? I'd be tempted to give it a wipe and see if it persists with no apps installed at pure stock.
Can you record it?
