I have to admit my eye's been caught by this little beauty. The screen is the big attraction for me, particularly the size and the proper multitouch.
For anybody who's had experience with both the Galaxy S and the Nexus One with Froyo, would it be a good decision to trade in my Nexus and get the Galaxy?
I own the nexus outright with no contract, and I'm due an upgrade so could get the Galaxy for minimal expenditure, although stuck then on a 2 year contract.
I'm slightly disappointed about the lack of a camera flash on the Galaxy, although it's not something I ever use much.
Any thoughts?
I'm in exactly the same boat as you.
If they say it'll get froyo soon, or if I see some comprehensive dev going on, I'll probably get it, but I'm still very worried about Gingerbread. Samsung track record on updates is abysmal, right now I'd be shocked if we got it.
There is a lot of talk over the lack of a flash, although as a keen photographer I really don't understand why. Having a flash right next to the lens is the worst place for it anyway.
Besides, it all detracts from the fact that the lens and sensor on the Galaxy S are remarkably good for a mobile phone class of camera, the colour and exposure are very good, and produce very usable results. The lens itself goes down to F2.8 so works well in low light situations, and the screen is bright enough that you can see what you're photographing in bright sunlight, these are far more useful to me than a little LED thats going to put horrible highlights on peoples faces and in their eyes
This is a pic I posted in another thread, taken on the Galaxy S, and is completely untouched apart from a 50% reduction. The colour and exposure are exactly as they were captured. The white balance is spot on, the saturation is good although a little heavy in the greens. Its in focus and reasonably sharp.

Although if you plan to be photographing drunk mates in the pub late at night, then yeah you probably need a flash and dont care so much about image quality, because such pics are never very flattering
Right now, if you have 2.2, you might miss some of the extra features, but the Sammy is gonna get 2.2 soon too, and then there'll be no comparison. I dont have a Nexus One, but I've used the Galaxy S and an HTC Desire side by side, and there is no comparison, am soo glad I waited

thanks for your impressions and image.
from the shots ive seen the camera quality does indeed appear to be above most mobile phone cameras. for me, the pictures are quite nice considering it is a phone camera and readily available at all times.
the flash would have been a nice addition, but the same as trav, i wouldnt use it all that often, and agree that phone flashes are weak to begin with and dont add all that much.

I'm pretty sure we'll get 2.2 on this phone... Samsung said they'll do it, but their word counts for very little obviously after the Behold 2. But market pressure should make them upgrade it. The question really is about Gingerbread. I know the Nexus One is going to get that, but who here can say they expect Samsung to rewrite Touchwiz for an update designed for UI upgrades? That's the real problem here. I can't be sure if this phone has as much future support as the Nexus One.
The Nexus has a flash camera, which is important, but it looks like in every other hardware regard, the Galaxy S wins out. It's all about software now.
youtube. com /watch?v=xAqZ5Hk96QY
I don't know whether I'm being naive, but I'd assumed that by the time gingerbread comes out, the galaxy will be well and truely rooted and it'll be a matter of the necessary community existing to put new versions of android on it.
I do have a slight suspicion that the Nexus One is the better bet in the longer term, but the Galaxy looks so tasty right now!
However, given the shelf life of phones these days, the question will probably be irrelevant in 6 months time when we'll be looking at the latest 2ghz dual-core multi-camera behemoths.
What I'm really wondering is - if the Galaxy S is a significant enough upgrade over the Nexus to make it worthwhile - to be a noticable improvement day to day.
Very good question austinchimp!
If you are hesitating about buying this phone, I would suggest you to wait because if it does not have the features you've always wanted on a phone, sooner or later you'll continue to search for a different phones. That is an expensive strategy. I've waited pretty long for a phone as the SGS, and I don't regret buying it. I don't care about the hype of Iphone 4 or HTC Evo 4G, I love my Sammy.
Hmm interesting, looks like there is no touchwiz 3.0. Although all other samsung apps are there. Is it going to be end for custom UIs?
here is a photo i took the other day indoors with no flash just a light on.. great photo with this camera.

Does anyone speak enough Italian to understand what they're actually saying? Is it not just showing a hacked-on "Froyo style" launcher thing rather than a Froyo update from Samsung?
It's not froyo. It's Eclair running without that much of the touchwiz interface. The notification bar still has the touchwiz though.

Speaking of hardware, the only meh so far are the volume-/powerbuttons. They appear quite cheap and wobbly. Stock-SW is sth you have to get used to. Or simply give a custom-rom a try.

Mine arrived and the buttons are solid enough. Could be better (aluminium) but nothing to put me off and certainly better than the N7100/N7102 I am leaving behind, which have a silly amount of creaks and soft areas considering their price.
Most reviews have been on the mark now I've actually got the device. Areas of improvement for sure but initial impressions are it's a really fine effort considering the size and experience of the competition. Starting out with stock (official) ROM before going to Betas and AOSP/AOKP to see how each fare. I quite like the stock interface - a bit of a change from traditional dark Android and it doesn't lag like TouchWiz
Also, the text difficult to read as noted in the review is fixed - screen of notification pull-down in current official stock ROM (0514).

Thanks for the heads up! Oppo's rep has also contacted letting me know that it has been fixed some time ago (shame on me!). Anyway, I've updated my review.
I guess it's a good way for people interested to see how Oppo progresses the software with user feedback.

Thanks for that fantatstic review.
A very interesting point in the review is this sentence: "Want a Google Edition device? This comes pretty darn close!"
I follow all the cm/aokp/pac/pa threads but as far as ive seen, there are troubles with the camera, overall stability and performance. Why are there no stable or almost stable roms out if this device is every developers dream?

Yeah, it works, but its far away from stable and the camera still has its bugs. Im not complaining, dont get me wrong, i just want to know why the find 5 is always mentioned when people search for a dev friendly aosp device.
Also there are so few people around in this forum that i fear that the dev`s loose their interest in this device, before theres a stable release of an aosp rom.

Time. The device has only been out a few months, and honestly, both xplodwild and I have been pretty busy with non-CM stuff lately.
Our fault, not Oppo's. Oppo has been, without a doubt, a pleasure to work with. They even sent me a SECOND device (with the serial console hardware populated along with two serial cables) to help with the kernel rebase. Unfortunately after making massive progress on it two weekends ago, I haven't had time to touch CM at all on any device since then.

I wouldn`t dare to complain about the dev`s awesome work, i was just a little bit unsure about the possibility of seeing a stable aosp rom one day, and whether i should keep my find 5 or send it back. To hear that oppo is a pleasure to work with and that awesome dev`s like you will carry on gives me enough certainty to keep that fantastic piece of hardware, and to supply some money to donate
I... am sold. Oppo's proactive dev support is just too awesome. I can see development taking off with this device months down the line, and that's saying much considering that it's already got a solid base for its age.
Looking forward to being a dev labrat~
For information...
I installed the latest c firmware (d in build prop) with LG flash tool (NOT UPGRADE), a CLEAN install.
wiped(factory reset) before flashing, then in flash tool cleared and made a CLEAN install and factory reset after to be safe (3 resets) .
Now I get very few screen misses, and screen on time 4.5 hours.
Before this I got screen on time maximum 2,5 hours.
Just wanted to let you guys/Girls in on this as it worked perfect for me and my wife.
Thanks for the placebo

Think I've been around enough to make an accurate judgement, add I'm an recognised developer, I made a hell of a lot of mods and ROM's all developed for two things only battery life with good speed.
You don't have to believe me, what matters is for me, add I got a much better phone.
Hi smaberg,
I was wondering if you are on the Euro 815 version of the G4? Based on your post I'm guessing you are? As a guy who knows what he/she is doing, I was wondering if you could make a flashable zip of the version d firmware? I have a mac and my understanding is you need a pc for the LG flash tool?
Figured I would ask and would greatly appreciate if you could help!!
Do you have the same set of apps installed as you did before the firmware and resets?
I saw better battery results on my second G4 vs my first, some of which I assume was because I installed a lot less apps on the second unit. Which seems reasonable to me.
What device is the OP using?
Sent from my LGLS991 using Tapatalk
I'm on international 815 (Euro).
Still using the exact same apps(didn't use LG backup Restore as it brings back the old draining Barry problem from my old backup).
And NO I can't make an zip, as it would skip some important steps. I mean I can make it, NO problem, but then you will end up with the exact same problem add the old.
hey Smaberg, can you outline the step to flash the new version? I'm using 815, but since i'm residing in Asia, my phone is not seeing any upgrades.
Yeah i also like to get exact steps you made to flash

I know, but compared to before, with only 2 hours, sometimes even less worth stock a and b I'm pretty ☺ happy, now I'm going to deactivate some junk and see the results, and when I'm done I'll share it.
I'm trying to get the best battery without root, then with root and some of mine scripts and files mod. And we'll see where we stand. In the end maybe an ROM pure made for battery as in the old days. If some still want this? I thought/think people mostly want bling bling and speed...

Hi,
I would definitely be interested in a battery life based ROM. I find that premium phones have more than enough power you need (if youre not a gamer) so as long as the UI is smooth battery life is more important to me.
Regards,
Ravi
Only used 4% battery and got this screen on time. With everything on.

Im personally not sure if i want to/need to root. Im happy with overall performance, but if i can make it even better, im happy to root, and i did root all my previous device. But this time, i just dont know, something stops me.
Well i rooted my S7 edge G935FD in warranty in the first hour i bought it 3 weeks back
I am on Phoenix Rom V2.0 , Am Getting 7 Hours SOT with mixed use of 4G,Wifi and Gps .. I have tried all roms in the last 3 weeks . All N7 Ports as well
Themestore is what i want with 100 percent compatibilty, The N7 Port Roms have fewer themes yet in store. where as S7 edge Themecenter is perfect. Dont know why its like that.
I have no ADS on phone, using xposed latest framework. and i have zero regrets
Rooting is very simple if you follow the steps exactly . nicely elaborated at xda , salute to the developers
Got the device 3 weeks ago and didn't root it till now. I use Package Disabler Pro (no root needed) to stop / disable all the Samsung bloat / crap and am pretty happy with battery life and overall performance of the phone.

Total rubbish.
Disable what you don't need. It's easy enough. Hardly any of the Samsung apps eat battery life if not used.
Rooting is for boys that constantly need to play with their toy

I agree with you. without root you can disable 90% of apps you don't need and the other 10% eat an unnoticeable amount of battery but I like my toy and customised the hell out of it. Mostly debloat, visual mods, xposed and viper audio. personal preference and It's totally your choice to keep stock. damn good phone either way.

Hahaha..without root no point having a android phone . Call Recorder, Greenify, Adaway, Cerberus,Lightingwall, Seeder and most of all TB are useless without it. BTW, if you care for warranty then dont root
Yes, The device improves, Battery life and everything you can think about. Lucky Patcher is the big reason for me. plus greenifying system applications saves alot of battery, removing bloatware. so yes, root is highly recommended, but be careful, it voids the warranty....
I rooted my edge the first day I got it. I do this for a couple of reasons.
I want an ad free experience on my phone. I always try to buy ad free apps, but sometimes there's no alternative.
I like the Samsung phones, but not too fond of the Samsung apps, so I remove all the Samsung bloat.
For me, the volume level is standard too low, so I need root to alter the values.
This is why I like android. You can alter a really good phone and make it perfect.
Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G925F met Tapatalk
I've rooted every other Android phone I've had, but not this one. I have ad-blocking with NetGuard, and realized most of the things I changed on my rooted phones were things that really didn't make any difference in how I used the phone. They were for fun, or look, or added changed minor little things that don't really matter all that much.
To each his own, though. For now I'm happy with the stock setup. Maybe someday I'll change my mind.
Android OS has come a long way from the early days. root is not really adding huge functionality like it did once before.
I'm am still tempted to root... but it becomes an addiction.. trying things just coz u can. But from experience on s5 best ROMs particularly in terms of stability and battery life were the stock ones.
I think if some major features are found on the next year flagships and they are late to be implemented on updates that would be a reason to reconsider rooting.

Overall it is a very positive on the reviews.. very similar to the existing and initial OnePlus 3 reviews save for the increase in costs.
Thanks for posting. It seems like the general consensus is that if you were looking at the 1+3, the 1+3t is worth the extra $40, but not worth upgrading if you already have a 3.
Great phone...all the reviews are very positive ..i was between mate 9 or OP3T..
but it was not so difficult to make a choice..
OP3T wins very easy to replase my old LG G3.

they dont really go into detail. of course the phone will be fast, switching between apps and gaming.
dont get me wrong, i like the phone
Even though I watched these reviews and the phone checks everything I need, I still am hesitant to buy it; the reviews are for people who just use Android, not tinker with Android. My biggest concern is with the dev community. I come from an OPO and I don't think I'll be able to stomach a phone with little community support. If only this phone were never released; then my choice would be obvious in getting an OP3. Only time will tell how this subforum grows or withers. I'm hopeful but not optimistic.

This is what I don't understand why people keep bring up the point about dev support. I mean it's not like every dev on earth just declared war on OP3T. Seriously how many custom ROMs do you need? The way I look at it, even just a few good one and pick one among them that suit you best is enough. Even for phone w/ locked bootloader are still some mod ROMs crop up here and there, and it's not like the OP3T will have a lock bootloader. Unless I get something wrong, just because some current OP3 dev say they don't plan to support OP3T, does that mean there won't be other? Or the OP3 one will never move to OP3T? I'm not a dev, but if I own OP3 right now I wouldn't plan on getting OP3T. But if the OP3 would break next week then I would be seriously thinking on the new OP3T rather than buying a used OP3 somewhere else. Aside from that, maybe there are some dev that was planing to do some work on the Note 7 would come over.

The OP3 also has similar improvements in app loading speeds when using F2FS on the newer community builds, and both devices will be on essentially the same builds going into the future.
