I can't remember but I think the T-Mobile variant ships unlocked, and if it doesn't then it can be unlocked easily. Either way, it's not an illusion.

Htc Hero Unlock

I have just debranded my tmobile G2 and i am now running thr 2.1 generic htc rom. I just need to unlock the phone.
Does anyone know where if there is a free or cheap way to do it?
Thanks in advance.
Can't unlock for free. Someone else can recommend you a place as I haven't bothered.
no free way, unless you call tmobile and get them to unlock it.
the way ive unlocked 2 heros is by using express-codes on ebay.

there are other sellers, but i can actually recommend this guy from using his codes.

No, unlock is permanent.
Im currently locked to orange but have also purchased a code from the link above but aside from the being able obviously use different sims are there any other advantages to unlocking ?
Reason I ask is because im pretty sure that when I first rooted and loaded a custom rom I used an orange specific radio.....but more recent threads suggest radios are region rather than network specific....
I dont currently have any issues being locked so want to be sure there will be no adverse effects from the unlock.....
Cheers

No other unlocking advantages AFAIK, although orange uk is known to have issues on some of the radios if locked (to be fair, I think it happened only once or twice).
But I think that is all over. Radios are region/hardware defined, not network defined. Unlocking doesn't cause issues. In fact, unlocking was the way to use the "non orange" radio most recently on an orange phone.

This being a community of highly skilled devs, surely someone can figure out how we can unlock our phones without having to pay for the 'privilege'?
Even the guys we are buying the codes from must have figured something out or are buying the codes from elsewhere?
How exactly does this work? Where do you enter the unlock code?
I thought once you install custom firmware you phone will be unlocked...

They are buying their codes direct from HTC. And a method of unlocking for free is known, but it needs done before every boot, so it's not usable, as it needs a PC and home-made serial terminal cable to send AT commands to the radio chip IIRC.
The radio requires the code to allow access, and the codes are randomly assigned/generated, so there's no algorithm to reverse engineer.
You insert a SIM that your phone won't accept, and then you get asked for the unlock code at boot, just like entering your SIM PIN.
And at £6.75 for an unlock code, I'm not gonna spend hours on looking for a method I'm afraid, since I can't justify the time to myself.

dont see how this place having devs means that you get to unlock your phone for free. this place is for rom development mainly, if you want methods on how to unlock, there are forums like gsmhosting that deal with that.
the guys that sell the codes online havent "figured something out". they are providing a service which they also pay for, they are basically middle men. i suggest you research how unlocking via code works.
to unlock via code, you put in a sim that isnt allowed, eg a tmobile sim into an orange locked phone, then itll tell you "sim restricted" or thereabouts, and ask for the code. thats where you enter it.
custom firmware has nothing to do with unlocking, although in certain cases (eg orange firmware) custom roms or downgrading is required to unlock the phone.
still doesnt mean that custom roms actually unlock the phone.

if you had a look at his negative feedback, most of them had follow up comments by him which were removed by ebay. i managed to see one or two of them before they got removed, and they were basically things like "your wifes using the phone as a replacement for you lol", things like that. nearly all of his neg feedback had follow up comments removed.
was quite funny, but i think that it may be because of those comments that hes no longer registered. only a hunch mind you.
Greetings folks,
Got one of these codes and happy with it,

Boot Loader Lock and alternate ROMs

Hello,
I am pondering the possibility to buy the Samsung Galaxy S II and have heard quite a few rumors that this phone will have a locked and encrypted boot loader making it impossible to use alternative ROMs.
I am sure hackers will take very little time in fixing this but am still wondering. Has anyone seen tangible claims of encrypted/lock boot compared to the I9000 (which I own atm).
Thanks!

Samsung's own website mentions encryption, but doesn't give enough detail for us to know if it'll be custom ROM friendly yet. I'm sure it'll take very little time once the phone is released to let you know, just hold tight until then!

I suppose you are referring to the data encryption that Samsung mentioned in its splash page? I really doubt they would post information about a Locked Bootloader on their website as it really wouldn't do them any good publicity wise.

Yeah, I said encryption. Of course we have no idea about the bootloader until it's released or someone techy gets their hands on one! That's why I said we have to wait. Sorry if my post was ambiguous.
SamFirmware just tweeted, Samsung are using same ODIN for Galaxy S II, just with new .PIT file. So it will be flashable.

Yes saw that but it doesn't mean it is flashable just like that until you see it working. Good start anyway.

Locked bootloader...
So I see the chat regarding the locked bootloader on the sg2...I also see people on the forum actually have the device...could they some how check and see if it is locked?
I have been going round in circles looking for a new phone...finally decided on the sam sg2 to find out they are going down the same route as moto!
So, to all the happy owners of a shiney new sg2...whats the dealo!?!?!?
owners of the sgs2 in this forum? you must be mistaken lol...
sam locking the bootloader? who told you that nonsense?
they wouldnt dare to lock the bootloader. its 1 of many reason why sgs 1 succeeded as it did.
if they want sgs2 to be a successful device as well they wont lock the bootloader. it makes sense that the bootloader will be UNlocked.. but then again you can never tell... we might be like if we will find out its locked. followed by and then after we will unlock it. leading to

[Q] Is there anybody working on a bootloader unlock?

Hello,
I have been searching around and I haven't seen any prove that anyone is working on a way to crack the at&t Samsung galaxy s4's bootloader for 4.4 and up. So I was just wondering since it would be cool to know if someone is working on it!
Thanks!

It's being worked on by a few people. There's a thread for it, but it's not in this section. It's unclear if it will happen, since progress can't be measured in a straightforward way. But work is being done and as soon as anything significant enough for us end users comes up we'll hear about it.

Various developers have been, were, and may still be working on unlocking the AT&T bootloader. All that really matters is that if it's posted here it's can be done to our S4 and proven to work. ( Things like Safestrap recovery. Thanks Hascode!) I would not trust anyplace else for such information.
Hope a bootloader unlock does come out. The only reason I can see that it would not, is that the s4 is an old device. That being said, there could be a universal boot loader unlock for at&t, of course with slight deviations between devices. This is just speculation.

[PSA] Read before relocking your bootloader

I'm not sure what is up, this isn't a new thing, but people keep coming to me (1-2 a day) with this issue.
If your phone isn't stock, DO NOT RELOCK your bootloader. You will 'soft brick' it, and at this time there is no easy route to fixing it.
If you are on EE UK, Verizon or another carrier blocking bootloader unlocks, and you used dePixel8 to unlock it, DO NOT relock your bootloader unless you are sure you don't want it unlocked again.
Finally, dePixel8 is UNSUPPORTED. Don't come to me if you can't get it to work, don't come to me if you used it them messed up your phone by flashing something bad or whatever. Its on you.
What's the fix if this does happen?

Interesting.. glad this didn't happen to me. I did relock my bootloader once because i was having issues activating my SIM card. I wanted see if that was the reason. Once i did manage to get the SIM activated i went through the process of unlocking using the dePixel8 method again. I guess i won't be doing that again.
Hah this would have been nice to see first. I ended up soft-bricked on my pixel xl. I hope a fix comes soon. Even a jtag or direct method somehow.
Flashing needs to be done directly since fastboot reads oem unlock and denys it.

This isnt a new warning, its pretty much standard "Dont relock with non stock firmware".
JTAG is a no go, would have to attack to the ufs and rewrite at the best least the boot.img

First of all, I'd like to say thanks to all the hard work put into the dePixel8 BL unlock.
With that said, I would like to say a couple things about this particular statement.
1. It is slightly misleading, you can relock your bootloader and still unlock it again under the right circumstances. If your software is all stock and you use dePixel8 after relocking, it will unlock again.
2. This statement contradicts the previous one. You should probably avoid telling people "they can never unlock their bootloader again if they relock it" if there is ANY possibility that they can. After reading this statement from you in the unlocking thread I spent about 2 hours scouring threads to find out if this statement was always true, which it is not.
Again, thank you for all the hard work on getting this unlock out. The intent of my post here is only to help improve communication of potential problems.

I'm sorry, but this is just not the case. I have verified this myself with my own Pixel XL from Verizon. Your statement in my opinion implies that if I relock the bootloader AT ALL it will fail to unlock ever again.
This may not be your intention to be misleading, but I know I am not alone in my interpretation of your statement. All I am asking is that you not make statements like the one I quoted which are provably false. Also, I did not say that your entire post was misleading, only the statement in quotes is.

The next security release should rollout tomorrow... And with that there will be a fix for VZW models preventing depixel8 from working. So IF you relock your bootloader after taking this update, we'll you'll be SOL. It's only misleading if you don't have prior knowledge of pretty much anything android.
I mean of course you can lock and unlock as many times as you want right NOW. Tomorrow will be a different story I guarantee.... But go ahead and be our guinea pig. I for one just say thank you @jcase and @beaups and listen to their advice. They've been around a long time and given us lots of goodies. I don't question them.

I'm guessing you dont understand how depixel8 works.
I'm guessing you dont realize that google could remotely nix this in the butt any any moment
I'm guessing you are unaware of NDE63X at this point and it's effect on the situation.
Why don't you lock your bootloader for a few days, then try? or just sit back, watch ppl ignore the PSA, then start compaling about being stuck locked.
