What does "Custom Version" mean in Settings > About Phone - Huawei P9 Lite Questions & Answers

When I go to Settings > About phone, I can see my build number, which is vns-l23c45b130, but at the very bottom, I also see "Custom version: CUSTC45D002". Does anyone know what this means and if it has any affect on what roms I can safely flash?

It means that the firmware was custom made for your carier ( they modified it)

Would that have any impact on which roms I can flash?

How can we remove such custom patches (carrier custom patches) without rooting?
(I got an update while I was traveling in Singapore. But now I don't need that. EMUI 10 update also contains update for carrier custom patch... I need to remove it before upgrading to EMUI 10)

What's in the Device Status field?(Settings>About Device>Status)
If it says anything else than Official then you will need to reflash a stock ROM from Sammobile. (Same or newer ONLY!)

if that field is saying unofficial then the phone will deny all OTA updates. So if it's not showing up with a Official status i think it's not a big problem. anyways if you still want to check if you have updates go to Sammobile's Firmware section and put the model of your S7edge and then chose the version you have(Carrier branded or Unbranded based the location)

question: j730F/ds software update, should I update or no?

hello everyone, hope you are doing well.
I have a new J7 PRO (J730F/ds model). I have a notification for software update.
so, should I update or not knowing that I'm planning to install twrp and root the device using Magisk and install Xposed.

It will update the bootloader which will likely add the new Samsung security which locks out the device if you try to flash custom software.
I suggest bypassing the update or flash it without the bootloader.

and how to flash it without the bootloader (what to select and select not in Odin ?)

I don't know about improvements
Updates are usually security related especially when they bump the revision on the bootloader.
When flashing don't use the BL part.

What is the correct model fo my Galaxy S5?

I bought a Galaxy s5 on Amazon a few years ago, and now I want to give it to my child. The phone is not rooted, and the current version of the OS is 5. I wanted to upgrade it to 6 (in order to install the family link app) but I have got an auth error in odin with several firmwares that I tried to install. I am now trying to find the exact model of the phone, but I am really confused:
On the one hand - on the sticker behind the battery it is written SM-G900F, this is also the model that I see in the phone's setting, the PDA version is G900FXXU1POEC, and the CSC version is G900FOJV1POF1.
On the other hand, the bootloader version is G9006VZNU1BOE3, this is also the baseband version, and when I entered into download mode the model of the phone is SM-G9006V
So what is the correct phone version? Which firmware should I download?

I don't have either variants you had mentioned myself but, it looks like you have the following SM-G900F device...
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s5/firmware/SM-G900F/XSG/
... with the following firmware that was originally flashed.
https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s5/firmware/SM-G900F/XSG/download/G900FXXU1POEC/48069/
That's the original firmware before the firmware was changed to the SM-G9006V.
This was possible because the SM-G900F device is an international variant. The international variants comes with its Bootloader already unlocked.
I hoped that I had clarified this okay via text...
Good Luck!

I really can't elaborate much more than I did since I never had those variants myself.
Maybe @curiousrom can be more helpful since he's got the G900F variant too?

Stickers can be changed & users may install the wrong stuff on their S5.
The only way to know the truth about what is your S5 model is to turn off the phone & boot in Odin Mode (aka Download mode): press and hold Home + Power + Volume Down buttons and confirm with Volume up to Continue.
What is the PRODUCT NAME that you can see after you accept the disclamer?
I mean like in the attach photo.
Then you can go to a site like https://www.sammobile.com/ and get the most recent Samsung firmware for your model which will also install the proper modem & bootloader (named aboot on the S5). See the Instructions (1 file) chapter in their download pages which applies to the S5.

"SM-G9006V..." - Bad news. You got scammed like the user in this thread for example Galaxy S5 SM-G9006V Variant issues:
I hope someone can help me here as im struggling for the last 12 hours and im completely lost now.
So my gf bought a Galaxy S5 off of amazon a while back and according to the software, it had Stock Android 5.0 for G900F loaded on the phone.
When booting into Recovery(TWRP) it seems that it was infact a G9006V and not a G900F variant. So in short, someone was dishonest and sold a Chinese variant as an international Variant. {bold by me}

The only stock Samsung 6.0.1 that you can install on your SM-G9006V was made for China Unicom and it does not include the Google framework which is required to install Play Store & many apps thanks to the Great Firewall of China censorship policy: https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s5/firmware/SM-G9006V/
You can find other similar cases with this search: site:forum.xda-developers.com/ SM-G9006V
AFAIK you have 3 options:
Keep the phone as it is.
Try to find some modified Samsung 6.0.1 or other custom firmwares on XDA that would work on your SM-G9006V.
Do a full TWRP backup then update to the awesome LineageOS 16.0 as described here including updating TWRP (SM-G9006V compatible version) & the modem & bootloader for the SM-G9006V. The post includes links to pages explaining how to do that: S5 super clean install
Edit: I did no search very hard but could not find an Odin flashable modem & bootloader package for the SM-G9006V. So in that case installing the most recent stock Samsung 6.0.1 for SM-G9006V will update your modem/baseband to G9006VZNS1CRH1 + the bootloader then you flash TWRP then you can flash LineageOS + Open GApps (for the Play Store).
WARNING: Do NOT flash any bootloader not made specifically for the SM-G9006V.

Yes because the fingerprint sensor will not work with your old Android 5.0 modem & bootloader in Android 9.0 on which LineageOS 16.0 is based besides probably giving you better network reception & better battery life.
But as described in S5 super clean install: stock Samsung firmware > with your SIM inserted make sure you get network signal & data then write down the APN settings: Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Access point Names (and/or make some screenshots of it: volume down + Power buttons, should be saved in internal sdcard > DCIM > Screenshots). That's just in case you have a network access problem in LineageOS. > install TWRP using Odin3 (see Flashing TWRP Recovery on Samsung Firmware chapter) > Backup the EFS partition to the external Micro SD card using TWRP while still running the stock Samsung firmware > install LineageOS + Open GApps.
Just curious: could you make some screenshots of all the installed apps in the stock China S5 Samsung firmware please? You need to copy or move them to computer before installing LineageOS because they will be erased if you use Format Data in TWRP which is recommended.
Because you have less than 10 posts @ the present you can't post links or attach images as per XDA's rules I think. You can post anything in the XDA Off-topic forum until you reach 10 posts: https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/off-topic which is preferable or upload them somewhere and post a broken link with spaces like https ://forum.xda-developers .com & we will understand.
BTW in LineageOS the screenshots are saved in internal sdcard > Pictures > Screenshots. APN: Settings > Network & internet > Mobile network > expand Advanced > scroll all the way down to > Access Point Names (APN)… works on my Galaxy S5 G900M LineageOS 16.0.
"...which is China unicorn" - Maybe they do have some unicorns in China but in this case it's China Unicom.

As long if you know your working APN settings. The reason is some network providers may not be in the LineageOS providers files or some providers do not like custom firmwares.
What is your network provider + country & do you have LTE on the status bar?
Tip: go to your XDA profile in this panel https://forum.xda-developers.com/profile.php?do=editprofile and add info > Devices: Samsung Galaxy S5. > Additional Information > Service provider as it's useful for troubleshooting & it will show when clicking the arrow under the username in a browser. Also > City & Home country & then you will get a flag under your username which gives an international flavor to the XDA threads IMO.
Note: @postai you have to make a new EFS partition backup after updating to 6.0.1 as it will modify some files in that partition.

No because TWRP is flashed with Odin & Odin is a good that can do many things.
Then with an unlocked bootloader (which is the case for most S5 klte variants out-of-the-box including yours except for the SM-G900V) TWRP can flash a .zip firmware. Root is to do stuff while running in System.
I updated S5 super clean install with some stuff about root after flashing LineageOS.

Yes after flashing TWRP on your S5 running Samsung stock 6.0.1 you can use it to restore a TWRP backup.
That feature is awesome as you can try different custom firmwares and quickly return to your current state.
If you don’t have a network problem restore only Boot (which is the kernel & not the S5's aboot - bootloader), System (Android OS) & Data (Apps) according to the principle: if it ain't broken, don't fix it as Samsung stock 6.0.1 will modify modem & EFS partition.

Just a small update: I finally succeeded to download the Chinese firmware to my PC, and installed it through Odin (this is the first firmware that didn't give me the "Auth" error).
All my apps are still there, but all Google apps (Play, Maps, YouTube, etc.) and Chrome are not working. I get an error message that they need to be updated, but when I try to resolve it nothing happens. I will now try to do a clean install of LineageOS.
I don't think I'll backup the current version, since I won't restore it anyway. If something goes wrong with the LineagaOS installation I'll try to use my current backup and restore the original Android 5.

I wonder how your other apps got restored as the Samsung Firmware should have wiped everything. Did your apps downloaded automatically after signing in a Google account? If so that's weird as you are saying that Play Store is disabled as expected.

The Samsung firmware didn't wipe everything. I even didn't have to sign-in again in a Google account.
However, it did change the recovery, so I had to reinstall TWRP. I will do the clean install of LineageOS and report back...
Another update: I followed the instructions and installed LineageOS successfully.
Everything went flawlessly, except for the launcher. I tried the first option, from Google, and I entered an endless loop of errors. The app keep crashing and tried to load itself again and again. Somehow I succeed to set the other launcher to be the default, I think the name is Trebuchet, and then everything worked.
I also installed Family link, and everything is working perfectly. Thanks curiousrom!
