wireless tether

I was wondering what is the easiest way to tether wirelessly without paying the extra monthly fee? I see there's an app for rooted users, but it doesn't seem to work very well.

you want to get tethering without paying for it and your asking us? ....

I would like to know too. I use to be able to tether (via USB and Bluetooth) with my BB for free on TMO. I heard that TMO is now charging which sucks but I heard if your phone is rooted that you can still tether for free on Android but then I read some people with a rooted phone still got the text about the 14.99 plan.. So it's a bit confusing. So is there still a way to tether for free? I only use it while on the train to connect my netbook to just do basic stuff like surf the web(no video playback) and check mail so even a free tether via bluetooth option wouldnt be horrible to me but if I could get the wifi hot spot working for free that would be awesome.

if your just checking email and stuff why dont you just use your phone.? i mean thats whats its for. instead of trying to look for a way to cheat the system why not just use it? thats why your paying for it anyways.....
and people wonder why phone internet and the such cost an arm and a leg.

Because say if I'm on the train on my netbook or laptop doing work (non internet) and I want to check my email it's easier to just open a browser on the device I'm already using instead of pulling out my phone. And what's with the holier than thou attitude? I mean TMO use to allow it for free when other carriers didn't and people on all those other carrier's always found ways around it to get it for free.. so asking his question is a legit question since many many people have been "cheating" the system for years.. and cheating a carrier isn't really going to make me lose sleep at night.. especially because in many ways carriers have been cheating us for years..

its still not a legit question to ask. your catching yourself in a hole already. you said " tmobile USED to allow it and now they dont. end of story. and your saying that people always found a way around it. its all not legit. i dont really care if you dont care about cheating a carrier, but i doubt asking about it on here is going to be kosher. since this a forum about how to hack your phone to get more performance NOT about how to hack your phone to get stuff your NOT supposed to get for free.

I believe that you can still use the wireless hotspot feature on your phone. I dont think T-mobile is charging for it yet. They will just cap your Data speeds if you use more data than they allow in a month.

I've been using the stock Wi-Fi Hotspot app since day one on my phone and have yet to receive the text, but then I never even get close to the 5GB "cap". some people have had the same "luck" as me where as others have gotten the text the very first time they use it... so I would suggest trying it out and if you don't get the text you're good to go.
if that doesn't work try Barnacle (in the Market).
besides every time I have asked a CSR about whether or not they charge to use the built-in Wi-Fi Hotspot app they tell me they don't know anything about it, even had one tell me that the phone didn't come with it and to check with the developer that uploaded it to the Market.

hmm How long have you been with Tmo? I wonder if the people who are getting the text about the 14.99 plan are new customers or if they are exsisting customers.. Maybe they are new customers so there accounts are built in with the block from the get and people who have been with tmo for a while are either 1.grandfathered and doesnt apply to them or 2. Hasn't been rolled out to all exsisting customer's yet.
The grandfathered thing I bring up because I know TMO has a great loyalty program usually whatever you got when you opened your account(features/services) you get for the same price no matter how high it goes up.. for example I use to have bb. for years I only paid 19.99 when TMO raised the price to I think 25 mine stayed at 19.00. When I just upgraded to android they gave me the unlimited plan for what I was paying for my BB unlimited plan 19.99. Another example is I got hotspot at home with my BB that allowed me to make calls over wifi without it deducting from my minutes for an extra 10 bucks a month.. after a while they stopped offering this service but I was still getting it. As long as I never removed it from my account it stayed.
So maybe it's a thing where if you signed up after that policy for wifi(or right around) you will get banged with the "you need a tethering plan" message otherwise you're good.. That's just a possible explanation based purely on a hunch..maybe.. kinda.. sorta

I've been with them since '05 on their original Family plan

I've been with them since 06.. I tethered on my BB up until 2 weeks ago when I switch to Android (I set my android up for wifi hotspot but havent used it yet because my netbook is being repaired) so it could possibly be that. I'm curious to know if the people who got this text message are new(er) customers and the ones that said they didnt get the text and have no problems tethering are older customers

I tried the built in wireless tethering feature about an hour ago and I haven't received a text asking me to sign up for the monthly add on. I wasn't expecting it to work for free and I assume it won't be forever.
Has anyone who has rooted their MT4G had success using the barnacle app to wirelessly tether?

yeah it was working for me, that was why I suggested it if you're not able to use stock. I just prefer the simplicity of the stock app, that and when ever I would tether with barnacle or the google code wireless tether my calls wouldn't come through but they do with the stock app.

Taking a Spring S4 over to Straight Talk?

Hello folks! I've been rooting Android devices since the OEM Droid, but I feel out of my depth with my new endeavor
I just scooped up a brand new Sprint S4 on the cheap via craigslist(literally 30 mins ago).... but here's the plan:
I plan on taking this new S4 over to Straight Talk to see how I like it. But, I've NEVER transferred a device between carriers before, and don't know what the crap I'm doing. I'm assuming I need to unlock the phone before activating with Straight Talk(not a problem, I'm sure I can get 'er done. I've only ever unlocked AND rooted both together, but assuming I can figure it out).
But after I activate with Straight Talk am I up a creek as far as flashing new ROMS on the device? Can I still root and flash (whatever) via this same device thread?
I'm coming from a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I'm actually out of contract for the first time in 17 years, and almost can't believe it. The stock S4 is light years better than my rooted and overclocked Nexus, so worst case scenario, I'm plenty happy with staying stock if I'm SOL. But I'd LOVE to tinker with this puppy if I'm able to.
A good shove in the right direction would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks for taking to read this post!

it would appear I didn't do enough homework Looks like I've got my work cut out for me just to get the dang phone to work with Straight Talk.

Your best bet to get your CDMA phone working with them is to call customer service to check out the ESN. Or if you get good t-mobile or att reception in your area, you could always unlock it and pick up an att or tmo sim card to use.

Again, on top of our private messages... I'm on straight talk and so far very happy. Only thing I can complain about is not having 4g...which I never had, so I've never experienced it. The flash service through ebay, the guy will take control of your PC and you can have it done when the flasher scheduled you a time. I bought my s4 on ebay with a bad ESN for like $389 a month after release. Also, the native hotspot doesnt work, but works once you flash the hotspot hack and use a widget from the playstore to turn it on/off it works perfectly. I personally use exlir 2 as my widget. I'm on a Sprint phone and it's flashed to Verizon's towers too, which is better in most areas. Other then that, for rooting/ROM purposes, I have zero issues. Signal/GPS is perfect. It even takes the OTA updates as long as your pure stock.:good: Using Odin .tar files is okay.
On second thought, the ebay service is illegal...your cloning a phone. Straight Talk thinks I have a Blackberry

I know I'm late in responding, but you made a point I found out after the fact. No 4G when taking the CDMA phone over to Straight Talk. This was a deal killer for me. I've since turned the phone on craigslist, and am looking for an AT&T version now
My only question is- How do you flash for specific towers?

congrats on being out of contract...I love straighttalk, paid a whole year off at once......use hotspot often...last month got 90 gb of data usage....I used my tmo note 2....but I have 2 sprint s4's that I would love to take to ST....if it works out well for you please let me know

[Q] another rooting razr m post questions

had trave mod wifi with motochopper root on my old razr m, turned off the update message, phone was about 6 months old and took a ****
got a replacement phone on the old update (yay!!) and never even thought about it updating because i figured there had to be something out for the new update by now... had the phone for 2 days and woke up the morning after a good drunk (hung over like a mofo) and was trying to send a text when the update popped up and i hit yes.... so 98.30.1.xt907 is what im on now and appears to be an epic fail at this point lol
my bootloader is locked and 4G is the only internet out in my area so im not paying verizon $100 a month for internet again... so my questions.
I dont really need root if i can use mobile hotspot or foxfi or w/e wifi app for free. Id pay for the app if it unlocked the ability to use mobile hotspot...is it possible and is there one out there?
If i cant do it without root is there one out there for the new update (searched this hard far and wide doesnt look good)
If there is no hope of free mobile hotspot on this phone what are a couple newer 4g phones through verizon i could buy (still on the old unlimited plan)

Unfortunately, you can't root that system version. There is the entitlement hack for people that are still on the unlimited plan, but I think you need to be rooted to modify the build.prop. With that being said, I'm not sure about all the phones that Verizon offer, but the HD and M were both updated at the same time and that update blocked root. The X can be rooted and you should be able to run the hack on that. However, you'll have to pay full price since you're going to upgrade off contract.

Nexus 5 to 6P on Cricket, hotspot doesn't work

I just upgraded from a Nexus 5 to a 6P. I'm on a Cricket Wireless "Pro" plan. I was able to use my hotspot on the Nexus 5, but when I switched to the 6P, the hotspot doesn't work any longer. I get the authentication message that I need to buy the option, blah, blah.
I tried the tether_entitlement_check_state hack, and that didn't work.
Any clue why this worked on the 5, but not on the 6P? The 5 was on Android 6.0, so it's not the version of Android.
Any help would be awesome. I have a very hard time accepting that I have to pay anything extra to use my LIMITED data the way I want to.

The 5 didn't check for provisioning.

And why is that? Both devices are running aosp v6,so where is the difference?

Bump...same situation here, 6p, cricket, need hotspot. Foxfi doesn't work.
No interest in root unless I HAVE to (and prefer not to so I can take ota's in the future).

Has anyone found a fix? Does removing the SIM card, doing a factory reset, and then setting up the phone without the SIM card inserted help with this so that it isn't initially provisioned as an AT&T-related device?

Same here..works fine on 5 with 6.0. Not interested in root at this time. Cricket has an app for $10 extra a month. Not worth it. I use tethering very rarely...

I'm in the same situation (cricket pro plan, 5 -> 6p). I called cricket support this evening to ask about adding the tethering option and was told that the Nexus 6P is not a supported hotspot device in their system. He wouldn't add hotspot for me even if I was willing to pay for it.

Well a rooted 6p isn't in their system either, did you ask him about that? what are your reservations about rooting at this point?

Mainly time. I'm an old with three kids. I was looking forward to having a phone that I didn't have to root. I went back to unrooted for the last year or so of my N5 and was fine with it. Not crazy about the permanent fuse thing either. Not sure why that bothers me though.

Fuse doesn't change when unlocking or relocking.

Agreed...I flashed stock on my 5 and 7 and mostly happy. Even relocked boatloaders. Got tired of updates I couldn't do and nuisance notifications. Too much time wasted fiddling around. I miss TB and restoring data, but 6.0 backup should be fine once developers get onboard.
Funny that it was primarily wi-fi hotspot that got me started years ago. Then we got it stock, and now its blocked again! Hope we can work something out.

I came from a Note 3 and was able to use hotspot with no problem but experiencing the same thing with authentication problems.
I also tried calling a couple days ago and was told the device isn't eligible.

Ha...looks like 6P does work!! And, I knew there was a reason they gave us such a nice SIM card tool. Although a bit inconvenient, this works:

Wow, works for me too. I think I'll make sure to have a SIM tool handy in a few places and make this my go-to solution for the time being.

I'm Out ...

I've been on Android since the Original Moto Droid days. Rooted every one. My phone is an 11 and I was still running MOAR rooted but it was getting wonky. I went ahead and flashed the stock 6.0.1 tar and gave up my beloved root. Having the old unlimited data plan still, the wifi hotspot is a must with me. I made sure foxfi worked on the wife's stock phone before I flashed mine. It does. Interestingly though, I am able to use no lock screen at all on my phone running foxfi. This is with trusted credentials installed. If I ever have to send this back for replacement on extended warranty, maybe I'll get a 13 come back and get back in to the game. There are some pretty nice phones on the market and I'll probably upgrade in the coming year. Maybe I'll research and see at that time if there are any other VZW brands that are unlocked.
