Not supposed to. twrp will not install it(i am able to with twrp but but not sharing how) if you try it will put you in a twrp loop.

I have galaxy s4 with stock room from sprint. I had rooted it and installed twrp custom recovery. I was trying to update the phone with OTA update but it rebooted to twrp and that is it. I tried looking for update/zip to install but nothing, update check says it was updated.
Did the update still install somehow?
If not, Where is it downloaded to update or recommend an update method?
I am also concerned about losing root. How can I avoid that in the future?

Oh, I did not know. thanks.
Hi guys.I have a question about update OTA ....if the phone is rooted and have custom recovery(twrp)installed can I update my phone ?
With a custom recovery the answer is no.

And with stock recovery and modified system files, still no. Either return them, or flash stock kdz.
so what is the easy way to fix this.So if I'm notified that a new update is ready to install is better for me to not do this because I have custom recovery installed....?
Block OTA until official KK is released. if you do that it will fail and or boot loop. You can freeze the update app / rename fota. Search forums.

when official kit kat will be relese I can update ota without any problem,or I have to flash through twrp?
So what is needed to install an update (whether OTA or a ROM image) if the device is rooted?

For OTA, stock recovery is needed along with all original apps from any previous OTA or from factory.
For custom ROM, custom recovery is needed. (TWRP, CWM)

Umm no. What he meant was that these incremental OTA's that still leave you with 4.2.2 are not worth the hassle of going back to stock to receive it. Now, when the time comes, and 4.4 is released, then it's theoretically a good time to go back to stock to receive said update. Or just flash it via TWRP if the file is readily accesible. Either way, its not worth going back to stock at all IMO.

What he/she said ^. Honestly, I would wait and to make sure it isn't locked down at release. If all is good, still able to flash recoveries and ROMs on official KK, my next step would be to do complete stock kdz. Nice, clean, new system on major update.
I'm planning to root my LG G2 D802 and use a custom rom to have a kitkat experience. but before rooting my phone, i want to know if is it still possible to update my phone to the ORIGINAL KitKat update using the OTA update by LG or i will be stocked to the custom rom once i rooted my phone?
Once you put a custom recovery on it in order to install a custom ROM, you can no longer take an OTA update. Odds are very good that the stock ROM, once out, will be available to install the same way you install a custom ROM, but OTA's are out once you have a custom recovery.
Sure it can be done, you just need to restore tour phone to stock firmware.

you can use the update tool your phone has the installer for,
you connect your phone to the pc and it says connected as installer,
install the program and update with it, it uses download, bypassing the recovery

the only way to go back to stock recovery is to go back to stock but you can also follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2673736 which will allow you to have root and custom recovery

Hi Guys, I have read some topics about downgrading, but im not fully understanding if this is only for people who is already rooted or if this will work for a non rooted device. In my case i have an At&t Lg G2 not rooted with 4.4.2 kitkat and wanted to revert to 4.2 so i can root and then flash a rooted stock 4.4.2 kitkat. Is it possible to do that, even if i was never rooted? I do understand there's no root for kitkat as of now.
Thanks guys.

Thanks a lot bro.
Has anyone tried upgrading a rooted LG H91810j to H91810p? Did you still have root afterward? What about TWRP? I am concerned about losing root and losing the ability to roll back because of their "anti-rollback" mechanism in 10p.
Optional back story, for the curious:
I bought a refurbished LG V20 that was running software version H91810k out of the box. I immediately tried to root it with dirtycow, but dirtycow does not work on 10k. So I downgraded to 10j from 10k using LGUP, and then successfully rooted the phone with dirtycow. I then installed TWRP and then LineageOS.
Unfortunately, I just don't feel like LineageOS is where it needs to be for me on the V20. I lost a number of features, such as (1) the second display, (2) ability to use BOTH cameras on the rear, (3) quad hi-fi DAC for superior audio, (4) automatic wake/sleep when opening and closing my phone case, (5) encryption (!!!!).
I feel like there are just to many things missing, so I think I want to go back to the stock ROM, but I would like to stay rooted so I can at least get rid of the bloatware. Is this possible or am I going to lose root and TWRP via one of LG's updates?
You can keep root on stock rom but flash one thats 10k if you flash one that's 10p and you wouldn't be able to back to anything pass
10p. Weta has a 10k version look in there thread for details and instructions

I understand not being able to rollback/downgrade after hitting 10p, but let's just say I decided to upgrade to 10p+ anyway. Would I still have root and twrp?

Right, but I'm talking about being rooted without a custom ROM, i.e. running the stock ROM while rooted and having TWRP. Can I upgrade to 10p and beyond, and at least keep root/twrp, even if I can't roll back or install anything else?

What firmware are you no right now
1)Get 10i root it install twrp
2) there's a flashable 10r somewhere don't have the link right now put download and flash via twrp 10r is the newest update I believe.

Technically I'm running LineageOS (14.1-20171226-NIGHTLY-h918) but I want to go back to stock rom WITH root/twrp, because I lost a lot of features like second display, dual-rear-camera, quad hi-fi DAC, encryption (etc). I just don't think LineageOS is ready for this particular phone, for me. I am planning to revert to stock rom H91810j (re-root if necessary) and then upgrade to the latest stock rom, if I won't lose root that is.

Just saw your edit. So it sounds like the best way to upgrade is to flash it via TWRP rather than install it via the OTA updates? Can you (or anyone else) confirm it stays rooted when done this way?

Yes update via twrp, you keep root
You upgrade past 10k and you lose the ability to ever root your phone again in case you screw up and have to flash a KDZ.
Your choice.....

I have been rocking 10k just fine. There is support for a custom stock kernel. Personally, upgrading to 10r is not worth the risk, especially since there is nothing really new besides sercurity patches.
Well, I ended up flashing H91810r as per this thread and I am happy to confirm I still have root. Just thought I would post this for anyone wondering the same thing. Now I just have to remember to only update by flashing via TWRP, moving forward.
Pretty much just like everyone else here has said, always update via twrp. Never take the ota update when you're rooted. And didnt you make a backup? Why not just flash back to your original stock rooted room?
You mean we can flash Oreo 8.0 kdz and still have root intact?

Read the posts, NO. Flash a zip from a thread for your variant that's labeled as twrp flashable.
