Problems after Nougat update - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

I am hoping some of you may be able to help me out. i am having some really odd issues after updating my Verizon S7 to Nougat. here they are.....
1) gBoard - when I activate the google keyboard, it is unusable. i see the keyboard...but the phone does not register my touch inputs. the rest of the screen recognizes my inputs...but the keyboard is dead. so i have to use the samsung keyboard. it works fine. but i prefer the gboard.
2) google sheets - i am unable to edit cells. i can scorll around in a spreadsheet, but when i tap to edit a cell...nothing happens.
3) autonotification - it seems that some of the takser profiles i have set to use autonotificaitons have stopped working.
thanks in advance!!

Do you have G-Board turned on as your default? I use it without issue on my phone with Nougat, so it's not a Nougat or S7 issue.
As for the others, I rarely use Sheets and don't use Tasker, so I can't comment on those issues.

i also noticed i can not input text into Google Keep. so it looks like i have no ability to input into any google apps (except gmail).

SOLVED
I finally figured out what the issue was. Hopefully this may help somone in the future.
The issue related to the Explore By Touch feature in Talkback. I had two services turned on in the Accessibility section of the phone's settings menu. When enabled, these two services activated the Explore By Touch feature in Talkback which prevented input into gBoard and google sheets. To solve the issue, I disabled Talkback using Package Disabler Pro. the two services causing the issue were AutoInput and Optical Reader. I have enabled AutoInput but not Optical Reader. This combined with disabling Talkback has resolved my issue. i am now able to use gBoard and google sheets.
I hope this info helps you as well.
thanks.

[Q] Fix to acessibility service TTS bug

I have been looking at improving the way notifications are displayed on my S4 and there are many apps out there e.g. iphone notifications which require a service adding to the accessibility settings. The issue is when you enable a service in there then you get partial TTS throughout the phone e.g. when browsing the internet you get page loaded speech etc.
Looking around the web this is apparently a bug with Samsung firmwares although I have not been able find a work around for stopping the TTS whilst there is an accessibility service enable.
The talkback service is disabled all its settings inside are disabled and driving mode is disabled. I would rather not completely disable voice by freezing the samsung TTS when rooted as I would like to use the voice commands.
I have the same issue - and I'm mighty PO'd about it.. I'd read about it affecting a lot of people with the S3, but I was lucky enough for it not to have happened with my S3.. Unfortunately my luck didn't hold after the move to the S4, and I get the verbal notifications in the stock (Samsung) browser. I tried all sorts of combinations of turning on/off Talkback before/after enabling/disabling the accessibility services that I want enabled in the hope that it would help. It didn't. I ended up disabling the 2x TTS services entirely which was something that I really didn't want to do. (And one of them wouldn't let me disable via Application Manager - I had to freeze it with Titanium, so had to be rooted to work around the issue.
For this to be a known issue with the S3 and to have made its way onto the S4 is ridiculous.
Have you noticed it happening anywhere else, or only in the browser? Browser is the only place that I noticed it, but I didn't really give it a chance to happen elsewhere before trying a bunch of things and then reluctantly disabling TTS.

I have do this same procedure. Do you have notice that with this, the air view don't work correctly on the email and that the upper and lower windows on the stock video player and gallery don't close anymore...

I have only noticed the TTS showing up in the browser so far but I haven't really explored far with it on as it does my head in.
Some devs have raised this with samsung here:
developer.samsung.com /forum/board/thread/view.do?boardName=GeneralB&messageId=232642
This is from iPhone notifications app page from PlayStore:

Google should revoke their license till they dont fix **** like this. Developers just cant stop supporting Samsung devices when Samsung has most of the Android device marketshare.

How well does google now work on note 4?

How good does Google now work on the note 4? I am thinking about getting the note 4 & I am real big on Google now. One of the features that I like the most that this phone offers is the ability to do Google now while the screen is off and wake it. Does this work pretty good?
Also, I read were moto voice makes Google now laggy. How is the Google now in terms of responsiveness for note 4?
I find it very responsive. However, my Google Noaw stopped working (would respond to okay google command only from Google search screen...would not respond from off screen or any other screen for that matter.) I checked all my settings and they were fine. I rebooted, still no joy. Cleared cache, still not. The only thing that worked was uninstalling the updates via app manager. Why this worked I do not know but....if someone runs into similar I hope it helps.

It works great, the only problem is if you have a gear watch or anything with bluetooth already connected, then it only works whenever it wants. You can't even set up your own voice if gear watch is on. Once you disconnect the fear watch, it works perfect every time, screen on,off, locked. I also have the s voice active. So with my gear watch connected, i use s voice for text, call, open apps etc from my gear watch. I only use the ok google for searching as ok google does a much better job at searching.
S voice is improved drastically. I'm coming from note 2 so, for me, s voice is like day and night. Even the car mode is amazing. I hope this helps your decision. Note 4 is a beast phone. I have been using it for a week now and love it. I'm stock by the way. No root.
i use the google now launcher and i have no issues (i've disabled S-Voice).
Ok Google search comes up whenever i say the hotword. I don't use it from lock screen (have a lock screen security on), but works fine if you have an unsecured lock screen.
Also have a Moto 360 connected via blutooth and it doesn't affect it at all.
There are some conflict issues between s voice and google now voice search. Once i turned off s voice, the problems went away.
"Always-on"-function gone and replaced by "From any screen". Why?
When you go to the settings of Google Search/Voice/OK Google Detection/
one should see the "Always-on" option, right?
I used to have it, but right now it´s gone and got replaced with "From any screen". I don´t know how that happened.
The problem is, "From any screen" doesn´t work when the display is OFF.
The "Always-on"-function does work also when the display is OFF.
I already re-installed Google Search, but that didn´t help either.
Anyone got an idea how to get the "Always-On"-function back?
Not , but I did find out the delay in voice search is caused the touchwiz launcher. Install the free nova launcher, and the search launched twice as fast, plus has a lot better customization.

Good advice, thanks. By the way: Does your Note 4 show the "Always-on"-function, or do you also have only the option "From any screen"?
I wonder whether it could be that there is a special version of the GoogleSearch-app for the Note 4 or devices like to Moto-X?
So when one downloads the standard GoogleSearch-app from the PlayStore, one will not have the "Always-on"-function.
Is that possible?
I have always and also from lock screen checked. There might be a specific version in the samsung pre-installed app store.
I think Always On works better with Nova Launcher than with Google Now Launcher. I was using GNL for a bit and after a long idle, the phone would not respond to "OK Google" with the screen off. It would take turning on the screen, then off, for it to work. My guess is that the Google app gets killed when not in use for a while. With Nova, you have Aggressive Desktop, which is similar to keeping the app in memory. Couple that with enabling "OK Google" from Nova and it keeps the Google app from being killed. Just a theory. Will test more.

How to disable Keyboard forever

Since the Nougat Update, I noticed, that I can also disable the build in Samsung Keyboard, if I have a separet Keyboard like Gboard installed. However after some time, the Samsung Keyboard seems to enable itself again.
Is there some way to let the Samsung Keyboard disabled all the time, without rooting the device?

One of those Package disablers should do the trick, check Google Play.
There is a Problem with Package Disablers i come across the last times i used them. If i disable the Samsung Keyboard with them, then the Sync also for Google Keyboard (or Gboard) seems to be disabled also. Maybe there is some dependence, maybe not, i didn't know exactly. But if i disable the internal Keyboard via the hard way, it disables Sync for Gboard also.
So i was surprised and exited to found such a switch in the official settings of the S7 Edge.
BTW: The only reason why i would like GBoard more is, that i haven't found a way to type Special Characters like ³ and ² with the Samsung Keyboard. I didn't use the GIF Features or such things with GBoard. If you know a easy way to type such Special Characters with Samsung Keyboard, i could switch back.

Push notification from Google - REMOVE TouchPal keyboard

I got an interesting notification pushed from Google Play over the weekend. I did not have Google Play app scanning enabled which is why I assume this was pushed from Google servers. It just popped up. I wasn't even doing anything at the time. I looked at the notification payload in the notification log and it indeed was from com.android.vending so it wasn't some imposter notification.
Anyhow, the notification made it clear in no uncertain terms that regardless of any past good experiences with the TouchPal keyboard, this version should be REMOVED from the phone. There was mention of it capturing data it wasn't supposed to. I should have grabbed a screen shot.
Fortunately, I was already using GBoard. HTC, like a number of others, pre-installs TouchPal so I was only able to disable it.
Do I trust Google and US Gov implicity? No. But I certainly put more stock in them than a keyboard straight out of China. There are few more dangerous apps you can put on an Android device than a keyboard IMO.
Anybody else seen this?
I would love to know how to remove this horribly invasive friggin program called TouchPal I disable it daily and it has permissions allowing it to make better use of my phone than I can......nice.....right?!?!!.......
Anyway anyone with knowledge on how to do this please email me.

Thanks,
Person fed up with annoying apps.

Google Assistant?

Has anyone managed to get Assistant to work? I'm in the UK. I read on one of the OnePlus community forums that you need to change device language to English (USA), which I've done. Still no Assisstant. Anyone managed to get it to work/have any ideas?
It is only google now, not google assistant
I needed to clear all data after changing language to English (USA). But I've got it working now.
Here's YouTube video showing steps to setup Google Assistant on OP5. https://youtu.be/-bE8ORPID3U

After you got it working, did you have any issues in retraining your voice. I have a problem where it appears to be listening for me to say Ok Google 3 times but never recognises anything.?

google does have issues properly understanding you with the wrong accent from my experience.
I am pretty sure I have google assistant

Doesn't work for me either. I have set the language to English USA. Tried to clear Google app cache and data to no avail.

I got Google Assistant working by following the instructions from the YouTube video in this thread's post #4. All was fine for a while and then GA no longer worked sometime after I applied one of the OTA's. I can't say that was the cause but the timing was coincidental. GA seemed to react but not fully engage. I tried a lot of things including re-training the "OK Google" but nothing worked.
Finally I followed the part of post #4's cache clearing of Google and Google services apps cache (remember there is more than one cache) and then went through the Google Assistant set up as if it had never been working. That fixed my issues and has been working ever since. I'll see if the same problems arise after the next OTA. So I'd trying clearing the cache of those two apps EXACTLY as shown in the video.
Edit: I've applied OTA for v4.5.5 and have not had any Google Assistant issue

You have to clear the data cache for play services as well.
For those that got Google Assistant working are you having any issues such as those described below?
Trusted voice which enables Google Assistant from the lock screen does not work despite the proper settings in place
Creating a Google Assistant shortcut not works
IFTTT doesn't seem to work as advertised (I'm still working on this one)
I've had no end of small issues trying to customize Google Assistant but the main built in functions (e.g. weather, search, Spotify commands, open app) work perfectly.
Just curious about other people's experience. It leaves me feeling Google Assistant is just a beta program/work-in-progress on a phone or a tease to get you to buy a Google Home despite always having a much more capable device in the palm of your hand (your phone). I don't want an ugly Google Home "air freshener" when I already have an Android SD835/8GB phone.

Google Assistant works with the screen off as long as the OP5 is NOT locked. Working while locked is supposed to work only when Trusted Voice is turned on. Unfortunately I have turned on trusted voice but Google Assistant will not initiate (work) when the OP5 is locked.
OK Google has a different interactive screen than Google Assistant. The OP5 OOS comes with OK Google but you need to manually activate Google Assistant before experiencing its advanced AI features. You would also see new Google Assistant specific settings at the top of the Google app->Settings->Google Assistant->(Settings, What can you do?).
One of the early posts in this thread has the link to manually activate Google Assistant.
Yeah, I have Google Assistant but I am pretty let down by the fact it doesn't work with the screen off and locked. I have heard it's a license that has to be paid to googs
Mine worked with no fuss. What doesn't work is the trusted voice and waking the phone up when the screen is off. That one I can't figure out

I've found a hacky workaround for this issue by using a combination of apps. First off I only use this method when I'm connected to the charger which is no different than the Trusted Voice limitations. Second my lock screen is only enabled when I'm not on a charger.
Use the Caffeine app to block the automatic lock screen. Check settings "Autoactive on USB", "Autoactive on USB type/AC charger", "Enable caffeine at boot".
Buy and install the app Screen Off (No Lock). I couldn't find a free app that turned off the screen but did not also lock it.
Then use the Google Assistant command "OK Google open screen off" to invoke turning the screen off but still having Google Assistant listening for my next command. I also use Tasker and it's Voice Assist plugin connection to Google Assistant so added the "start Screen off" as the last task in my Voice Assist profiles.

For the most part Google Assistant works for me but important features either lack reliability or don't work at all.
Google Assistant macros don't work at all despite built in GA commands working (e.g. play on Spotify)
I can't seem to make a IFTTT connection work
The connection between GA and Tasker's VoiceAssist is unreliable. Too often GA intercepts a regular Tasker Event phrase and displays a google search screen but the Tasker event for the phrase does not trigger. This despite the Tasker VoiceAssist toast displaying the correct event phrase. I'll try it a second time and this time it'll work despite GA recognizing the exact same phrase (not a variation).
I've been able to create some cool home theater (Harmony Hub) automation profiles but the unreliability has me wondering if I'm wasting my time. I really like the whole Google Assistant and the Tasker extension but am not prepared to continue developing things unless I can increase the overall stability.
It may just be my OP5 which is running OOS 4.5.5, rooted with SuperSU with Viper4Android installed. Other than that I've not altered the stock OOS experience. I've not even removed any bloat ware.
Does anyone have the Google Assistant macros and/or IFTTT working on their OnePlus 5?
I've previously posted that Google Assistant's macros didn't work for me but I received an update to the Google app v7.7.14.21.arm64 (Beta) and Google Assistant's macros are suddenly working. Even macros I'd previous entered but had never worked. I also added new ones and they also worked.
What stopped working was Tasker receiving the OK Google spoken commands, (no VoiceAssist toasts). I need to explore further as the newly functioning macros may be a far better way to integrate with Tasker. I'll likely retry the recommended Google Assistant/IFTTT/Tasker integration which also didn't work prior to this latest update.
It's working perfectly
Just did as it was said on the video. Everything works perfectly, including the "OK Google" detection while the screen is off. No problems whatsoever.
To Note: Even i changed the language back to English(UK) after all was setup, and works like a charm. :good:
