No, CM/AOSP uses ambient display for this. Behaves a bit differently but it's more than good enough, especially with a working notification light.

disable auto screen wake - possible?

Whenever I touch/move my moto X play the screen awakes, is it possible to disable this so screen will always stay off until I push the power button? Tried looking in the screen settings, but can't find anything there.
I have another phone also with android 5.1.1 and the display is off until I push the power button - so this must be some motorola feature?
I want to disable it to save power, as screen flickering on and off all the time can't be a good thing.
There is an app called Moto and in there is display settings. I think you need to change the notification setting in there.

As above, you can change it in the moto app under display or in settings->display -> screen notifications -> none
Thanks! I thought that setting was only for getting the notification icons on the display!
FWIW Under same settings there is one called "Ambient Display" - it's sort of half way between the "Moto Display" and none in that if you hit the power button it shows current notifications + plus lights up when new notifications come in but does not turn on when touched (as in Moto Display). I use the Ambient Display to offset the lack of a LED for notifications. I'll probably flash the kernel to enable the LED'S at some point but in the mean time I'm happy with it.

Hi, where exactly is that ambient display setting? I don't see it in the moto app nor in my display settings under display. I'm on a moto z play unlocked. Not sure if that matters.

You won't see ambient display settings if you have Moto display. Once you disable Moto display I believe the ambient display settings will be automatically enabled
install glance plus.best ambient display like app ever.

Just disabled Moto display and ambient display is not enabled under settings, display. Or I'm looking on the wrong place?
Edit: Never mind, Moto display must be disabled under app. Not just turned off in Moto app.
Edit2: But ambient display does not turn display on for notification.
So the phone must use motion sensors, right? That must be why they have one called Force. You can use Jedi hand waving on it.
I'm worried that turning off Moto display isn't enough. The motion sensors may be running all the time and are surely a drain on battery. Is there any way to turn motion sensing off altogether?

3rd Party USEFUL Always On Display app?

Coming from a Droid Turbo, Moto's AOD was awesome. Always showed me the time and icons for any notifications - if I wanted more info, I tapthe notification and get a peek (still on AOD) at the info, then could open my phone directly to that app by dragging up.
In contrast, I find Samsung's AOD fairly useless - even the time is often NOT on or bright enough when I really need it. And if you choose the AOD with notifications, they only work for a couple of stock Samsung apps if you happen to use those apps.
Has Samsung opened up the AOD API to third parties to create their own AOD apps? If so, anybody know of any good ones? Or perhaps turn Samsung AOD off and a third party Android app can emulate it? Right now, as is, the Samsung one seems pretty useless to me. And the 3rd party themes they offer for AOD don't change or add to the functionality - just allow optional looks of the same basic function.
Check out these:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.achep.acdisplay&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anandbibek.notifyfree&hl=en
The last one seems to me to be the most effective.
Edit: You'll want to turn AOD off to use these.
The stock Samsung AOD enables some more optimizations for the display controller, including reducing the number of colours and the refresh rate.
How do I know whether those apps do the same? Is it known how to access the display controller this way, is there an API for that? How could I write an app that uses this?

My previous device was a Moto X and like you I miss some Moto AOD features too.
Anyway, there are ways to tweak a bit Samsung AOD , check this thread: Mod for Always ON Display to Double tap to Unlock possible?? (Nougat)

(DISCUSSION) Front flash for notification

Is there any app by which we can use the front flash to blink every time we receive any notification on moto x style/pure (unrooted). Please share
EDIT: Found it.....it's FLASH ALERT 2 version 2.1.5.. Available on play store.. Works perfectly...
..
I think at the moment there are only apps that can use the notification light for things like when the phone is charging. I don't know about for sms or other notifications.

try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-j7/themes/j7-flash-notification-torch-t3338126
works perfect on my galaxy j7
I am able to control the front-facing camera's flash by using Tasker. Use the 'Set Light' function under 'Alert' in the actions list. In the light source menu, the flash can be triggered as a torch or as a momentary flash. 'torch-light0' is the constant-on until you set the value back to 0 and 'led:flash_0' in the momentary. Be careful testing it - the flash is really bright, lol. Root is required to control the light.
I must have read everything but the last word of the OP. Sorry. Hopefully, this info can help someone at some time...
Found it for unrooted MOTO X STYLE..it's FLASH ALERT 2.. Available on play store.. Works perfectly..

Notifications similar to moto display?

Coming from a moto x pure. Had moto display set up to light the screen when the device was picked up. Also, any notifications would appear here and a swipe up would open right into the respective app.
With the a7 we get a notification light and fingerprint reader. I'm trying to wrap my head around how to efficiently open notifications without a number of taps. Device is rooted with xposed installed.
So far the best I could come up with was to remap the finger print reader to open the notification bar. This means one tap to unlock, and 1/2 sec or later a second tap to open the notifications. Quickly double tapping doesn't seem to work.
Is there a more elegant solution?
Not sure how well it works with the FP sensor, but AcDisplay is a great alternative.

Thanks. Looking for something more recent. That app hasn't been updated in over a year (11/2015).
How are others dealing with notifications on this phone?
Works great on lineage.
I'm not ready to switch to lineage yet. Also, lack of xposed will mean other solutions to modules like gravity box will have to be found.
It's ironic, when I first got the moto x, I was annoyed at the moto display. After some tweaking, I got it to where the screen only lights up when the device is picked up. Notifications can be somewhat manipulated from this state.
It looks like I'll have to relearn notification usage on the a7.
I use KinScreen to automatically turn on the screen when I open the flip case (uses proximity sensor).
Best thing ever.

Ambient display on rooted 7.0 Style

Hey XDA,
Does anyone know if it's possible to enable the android ambient display on a rooted style (I much prefer it to Moto's Active Display). I've been trying to get it working for a few days now. I disabled the moto display task, and can select ambient display in settings, but no go. I've installed the Ambient Display xposed module, and have all the options, but still doesn't turn on when I get a notification or when I reach for it.
I've also tried setting up a tasker profile to make use of the sensors, but can't figure out how to switch on Ambient display, not the entire screen.
Any ideas?
Yes, running into the same issue with stock OTA 7.0 and ambient display on XT1575.
Was anyone ever able to get stock ambient display (not Moto Active Display) working?
No... As most developers of ROMs for this device who have ever tried to get Moto Display working on a custom ROM will tell you, Ambient Display and Moto Display cannot co-exist in the same device. If Moto Display is installed (as in on stock), then Moto removed or otherwise permanently the default Android Ambient Display functionality, likewise if Ambient Display is working, Moto Display cannot even be installed, because of how this works it likely has hooks into the kernel as well.
TLDR answer... If you want Ambient Display go to a custom ROM, otherwise live with Moto Display if you want to stay stock.

Nope, the truth is that lenevo intentionally removed some ambient display code from 7.0 for some unknown reasons. On previous 6.0 android you could enable it just by disabling moto display app in the settings.

Hmm... Then why can't we add Moto Display to a third party ROM? (I only refer to Nougat, Marshmallow is legacy in my book)
