Just want to make sure I'm doing this correctly..
My phone has PK1 right now. These are the, just in case, stock pk1 files.. https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/0B0vffDY5Mf5sY1JpY3ViWlV1OVU , and I'd use Stock odin 3.12 (http://odindownloader.com/download/odin3-v3-12-3) to reflash those files.
But to get PK1 -> Root, I'd have to follow this post? https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...-to-notes-root-install-xposed-unroot-t3411039 I used this link when I first flashed my ATT s7, but it had stock pf2. Can I still use this link even though the phone is pk1?
Any help and guidance will be much appreciated!!
edit - im starting to think that you can use the second link my post, as long as your phone is running any sort of marshmallow (or at least pf2 and above). the only time you'll need the same stock files, is if you're unrooting. can anyone confirm that for me?

That thread will work on any version of Marshmallow. There's also root for Nougat now if you want to update, but if you're trying to used Xposed then you should wait on that one.

Yes. Odin files are available for each and work going either way.

My problem is I have searched EVERYWHERE to find info on how to root my device being that it is brand new never rooted running the newest firmware update. My gs5 came with NI2 and then when I turned it on it did more updates so now it has NK2 NEVER ROOTED BEFORE. so I need to find out if I can downgrade my firmware back to NI2 so that I can use towelroot to root my gs5 because im feeling kinda sketchy about downgrading after the bootloader has been updated to NK2. and my next question is, ive read that in order to get on the most recent firmware and rooted you need to flash the firmware in order using odin till I get to the newest firmware and my question is this, after ive rooted and I flash new firmware using odin will my root still be there even after doing this 2 or 3 times getting to the newest firmware out will my device still have root? or will all the flashing of new firmwares take away root? so I believe if somebody answers these questions i'll know where to start.

I just did mine today. I installed towelroot before updating to NK2 though. After I rooted it verizon still kept asking me to upgrade so I did and lost the root. I was able to get it rooted again though. Not sure if this helps cause I was on NI2 when I installed towelroot. Can't it be installed on NK2? I don't know this is my first post.

I think you can install towelroot to NK2. You have to downgrade to NCG to get root to work, then flash to NK2. You don't want to try to install it while in NCG cause the phone will go too slow. I used the video called Verizon Galaxy S5 How To Root Latest 4.4.4. OTA Update

You can still do it. That Guide works for from ncg to nk2. It even has the tar files for nk2 so you can Odin back to nk2 if you want after you root. Is there a certain rom you're wanting to run?

no at the moment im just trying to get this rooted, so im guessing because when I got my phone brand new it had ni2 on it so that's the tar file I should download correct?
You have to download ncg to root. Then I'd you want ni2 download ni2 or if you want the very latest get nk2. More roms use ni2 firmware I think.

Was it full tar or firmware? I only ask because you don't need the full tar. All you need to do is get the Firmware only that is in that thread I linked. Flash it in Odin, run towelroot(should already be installed because once you go to ncg kernel things will be slow), flash superuser, safestrap, then flash the nk2 firmware with Odin. That should put you where you are now, just rooted and with safestrap.
Just follow that thread substituting nk2 for ni2 and use the Firmware downloads from that thread.

Go to the guide, go to how to root section. You can use your phone to unzip files so download roots5 zip and unzip it and follow those steps except for number 3(the ones that says Odin ncg) since you're on it now. When you get to the step that says Odin ni2 just use nk2, or ni2 if you want on that one. Now roms are ni2 than nk2.

I recently "upgraded" to 5.0.1 from 4.4.4 google play edition (nb1) and i quickly regretted it! I used Muniz's method to upgrade and root but I forgot completely how much touchwiz SUCKS! it's so frustrating having so many limitations to what i can do to my s4.
I did plan on getting the S6 seeing as I'm up for my 2 year upgrade with ATT but after playing with touchwiz again I realized how much I loved my pure android experience and Xposed options. Does anyone have any recommendations on downgrading and go back to a pure android lollipop rom?

Unless there is a way to do it with ODIN. Can you link the correct method to downgrade? I have the i337 ATT model.
Ahh I see. I saw that you had the GPE 4.4 and incorrectly assumed that you had a custom recovery already.
So people with locked bootloaders can't even flash stock ROMs?

I've been reading that upgrading to oc3 might possibly lock the bootloader. i havent tried to ODIN 4.4 tho yet cuz i haven't gotten clear info yet. I could ODIN and downgrade but I'm not sure if it will brick my phone
Ok, so after trying to use this guide to downgrade my i337 to stock, I was met with the "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue screen". I am now using this guide to fix this issue. Currently, Samsung Kies is working and downloading the stock firmware for me. Lets hope this works. I will keep you guys updated.
Update: It seems like its not working as well. Since I couldn't do it through ODIN, I guess Kies wouldn't work as well. Do I have a soft brick here? Damn.

No, I had followed a guide to update my stock 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 using stock recovery. The file was 947mb .zip and contained a .cfg file inside. I had to extract the .zip and rename the .cfg to .zip. Then I side-loaded the file and updated to 5.0.1. I was on stock 5.0.1 before I tried to downgrade.

I just did it. It worked. Only took 10 minutes. Use this file.
I followed the NJ4 -- KitKat 4.4.4 downgrade process.
You can only go back as far as nb1. Use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221, it has the files and instructions you'll need.
Hi Friends,
I am currently on rooted NK7 which i did I guess around an year back.
I know I am stuck on Kitkat and may have been missing a few important security updates (stagefright for sure I guess).
The main reason I am still stuck with KK is I just love Xposed, particularly xprivacy... can't live without that.
I am trying to go to all the current threads but its a bit confusion on trying to figure out what the latest ROM I can upgrade to that will allow me to keep using Xposed f/w.
I have safestrap installed on my S5 and I guess that is how I rooted back then.
Could someone take a few mins to help me provide instructions on how to do that?
TIA.

There's a SafeStrap that works with Lollipop, but not directly. You need to flash a Kitkat kernel in order to boot into Safestrap from Lollipop, then flash the Lollipop kernel from within SafeStrap in order to boot back into Lollipop. It makes more sense when you do it.
You should be able to use Xposed with any de-odexed ROM, but it can have slightly unpredictable results.

Given that I am on NK7 I assume I am already on Kitkat kernel, is that right?
So, I guess here is what you are saying:
1. Go into safestrap and flash Lollipop kernel (from jkruse's thread I guess?)
2. Once kernel is flashed, reboot back into safestrap and then install one of the firmwares listed on the same post?
I guess step 0. would have been to download and save the kernel and firmware files on my sd card to be used in safestrap.
Also, if I am already rooted on NK7, can I jump to any of the kernels/firmwares (roms?) in the list of I have to step through them?
TIA

My apologies. Misread your post. Basically you do what's in the links to get back to NCG and (what I've done) is flash one of Muniz_ri 'How to Upgrade' ROM'S and go from there. Once I flashed back to NCG and enabled Root and had a GPS lock, i then flashed his (Muniz_ri) OC4 ROM and I've been on ROM's since and with Xposed. ..
You're already rooted on NK7, so you have two options since there is now a root method for Lollipop.
You can either do the NCG "keep root" upgrade method that al50 is referring to, or you can just jump right to BOK3 and use the new root method.
Personally, I might be inclined to go the safer route and try the "keep root" method first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...w-to-update-to-g900voe1-5-0-keeproot-t3149784
If you decide to use the new method, you're going to have to use Odin software on your computer to flash the entire BOK3 image from scratch. If you don't start with a fresh install, the root process is less likely to succeed for some re.ason.
I am still on NK7 myself. I am opting to flash the BOK3 image that still has the BOD5 bootloader, because BOD5 is the last version that is able to be downgraded back to kitkat. This is not necessary, but I am averse to burning bridges. If you'd like to go this route, download the full image from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/g900vvru2bog5-factoryodintarimage-t3179527
If not, just download the BOK3 full factory image. Regardless, read jrkruse's thread on the new boot method carefully and thoroughly before you start: http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
And no matter what, if you flash a BOE1, BOG5, or BOK3 bootloader, do not under any circumstances attempt to flash an older bootloader over it or you will brick.

Well... you *could* just ODIN your recent firmware files and then re-root.

As just odin modem and baseband or doing the whole firmware and I'm not sure but I could've sworn reading updating the baseband prevents you from using the engineering kernel
I would odin everything but the bootloader...that way if it doesn't work you can revert back...the BL is what usually screws you being you can never revert back to previous BL. The CP (modem) usuallly always flashes without an issue and the AP(firmware) usually flashes fine with your current bootloader. If you have a marshmallow BL you should be able to flash any MM firmware. Now when nouget is released, you would probably have to update the BL. It seems everytime the OS goes to the never level example (kit Kat lollipop, lollipop to mm) you'll need that BL to flash the AP. I could be wrong but that seems how it usually worked out for me

I have a Verizon Galaxy S5 (G900V) that I rooted a couple of years ago and never updated any further. It's currently running 4.4.4 / NK2 and I've been looking at upgrading to a Lollipop build. I have the Toshiba 11x eMMC so it doesn't sound like Marshmallow is an option if I want to keep root. I've spent significant time rooting through the forums and I can't seem to find a method to update my phone from KitKat to Lollipop (while keeping root) that is current, has the necessary files available to download, and works. Using FlashFire and G900V_OE1_Stock_Rooted_ROM.zip followed by Odin and an OD5 bootloader is failing on my phone for whatever reason. The other methods, including muniz_ri's, don't seem to have current files available for download.
I've fried my brain searching with no success. If anyone could point me to current directions/files to upgrade from KitKat to a solid Lollipop build while maintaining my root access, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you.
I would Odin this file https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24438995911970571
That will take you to stock PB1 then follow this guide to get root https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/root-method-og5-ok3-t3290370
Then I would use flash fire or LP safe strap to flash a ROM I recommended
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...ang5litre-edition-5-0-pb1-devnon-dev-t3381850 or https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...enix-rom-9-0-ported-g900v-ported-rom-t3188443

So if I'm reading that correctly, I can skip to step #9 of the "Directions For Users With CID 11' Toshiba eMMC" section and then use the EMMC_11_PB1_5_0_1_LL_Firmware_Bootloader.zip and VZW_BPB1_ODEX_DEODEX_V9.zip files. Is that correct?

Yes. You must have safestrap and use it to flash EMMC_11_PB1_5_0_1_LL_Firmware_Bootloader.zip and rom

Success! Now on 5.0 and PB1 with no significant issues during or after the upgrade.
Many thanks!

Let me add a caveat to that success story. I do notice that I don't have the Safestrap recovery option during the boot up process and it looks like this is expected behavior for Lollipop. The "Reboot to Recovery" option with the app is also not active or functional. What's the best way to get back the full Safestrap functionality? I found the below thread of yours but I'm not sure if the files and instructions are current. Thoughts?

I think I see where I went wrong with Safestrap but it's going to be a little while before I can investigate further. Don't want to brick my phone at work and not be able to phone home.
I'll update after I do some more troubleshooting.
Thanks again.
