If you're reading this, you're probably regretting taking the latest OTA update.
It seems that Google hasn't been so kind to our batteries this time around, and with no root is in sight (thanks AT&T), our likelihood of any real battery life improvements is severely limited. Here are a few tips which may help remediate the situation.
Don't drop the soap...
Suggestion 1.) Reset app preferences. This may help to sort out some battery draining bugs:
Navigate to Settings>General>Apps>(dropdown)>Reset app preferences
Suggestion 2.) Disable all AT&T & LG bloatware. Less apps to run = less potential battery drain:
Navigate to Settings>General>Apps> disable everything you don't need
Suggestion 3.) Force GPU rendering. This will take some load off of the CPU which is more power-hungry than the GPU:
Navigate to Settings>General>Developer Options>Force GPU Rendreing>On
Suggestion 4.) Disable battery optimizations for all Bluetooth-related entries, Nougat is known to play nasty with Bluetooth:
Navigate to Settings>General>Battery & Power Saving>Usage>Ignore Optimizations
Suggestion 5.) Turn off IZAT low power location estimation. Contrary to it's description - this will actually actively use Wi-Fi for location services when your GPS is off. This feature is a no-go for battery life:
Navigate to Settings>General>Location>Low power location estimation>Off
Suggestion 6.) Disable Wi-Fi when screen is off, this will mitigate network drain while your phone is idle:
Navigate to Settings>Networks>Wi-Fi>(dropdown)>Advanced Wi-Fi>Keep Wi-Fi on when screen is off>No
Suggestion 7.) Disable Enhanced LTE services. You will lose HD call audio, however this feature is known to cause excessive battery usage on the AT&T network:
Navigate to Settings>Networks>More>Enhanced LTE Services>Off
Suggestion 8.) Install Greenify and Greenify pretty much everything, including system apps. Make sure you connect the phone to your PC, enable USB debugging and run the ADB commands to enable aggressive doze. It is still far better than Nougat's built-in doze.
Suggestion 9.) Pray. Jesus may not save your battery, but doing anything rather than using your phone may help the battery last longer...

Or just do a factory reset and solve a lot of the issues. I don't have the battery drain I always do a factory reset after an OTA for 2 reasons 1 it's recommended 2 it solves the optimization of apps because when changing operating systems it doesn't do a smooth transition and usually leaves behind some of the old system cache that can only be removed by factory reset

Not everyone wants to do a factory reset. It can be a big pain losing data and restoring all your apps one by one. If course this wouldn't be a problem at all if we had root, because we could use a custom recovery and clear the system cache manually.

I reset my phone 4 times two different ways. I think I narrowed it down to Android Wear. Will know today. Because this sucks.

So pretty much anything I install kills the battery that runs in the back ground.

Yup, I've pretty much figured out this phone. Carrier models (especially AT&T's) really suck because of background apps you can't disable without root (which is also likely impossible unless they'd release a .TOT/ .KDZ to be examined for root possibility). Additional installed apps drain the battery to varying degrees, especially with Nougat. Compounding everything, this phone's battery life is anywhere from 2/3 to 1/2 as efficient while using mobile data/ especially with a low mobile signal. Factory resets do nothing to fix these problems. Hopefully 7.1.2 or 8.0 will eventually be signed and distributed for us, otherwise this phone seems like a lost cause.

Strange thing it's it now works. I pretty much uninstalled everything. Then I slowly reinstalled the things I wanted slowly, over weeks. Even android wear. But there are things that still will crush the battery life. Either way it seems normal now.

I am awaiting my g6 and was curious to know the battery life , came from real life review battery standby drain on g6 to here via link. This made me lol . Thanks for the other suggestions as well , will try them out.

Thank you for this! Ever since getting this phone (Just over a year ago), the ONE THING that has bugged me is the immediate and apparent horrible battery life! I went through this and did as much as I could, and noticed an immediate improvement. Also has helped with the heat, it would get a worrying level of hot. One thing I wasn't able to figure out was this, as I couldn't find it where you indicated in settings.

You need to activate the Developer Options. To do that simply navigate to (assuming to are on G5 LG-H820, Android v.7):
Settings>General>About Phone>Software info
Now start tapping on "Build number" till you get the message "You are now a developer".
Developer Options will appear in:

Solution to battery life issues (works 100%, guaranteed)

I love this phone and have posted this on several forums already. I want everyone to enjoy it as much as I do.
I switched from an IPhone 4 to the Atrix and I am really impressed by the device. HOWEVER, I was very close to return the phone due to poor battery life (in comparison the IPhone 4). The max I got out of the device was 14-16 hrs and the strange thing was that it did not make ANY difference whether I hardly used the phone at all or played around most of the time. Over the weekend I checked and after unplugging the phone from the charger and leaving it on the desk the battery was down to 70%.
By the end of the day on my IPhone I used to have about 30% battery left with all radios (3g, bluetooth, wifi, GPS) on and moderate use. With similar use and GPS off the Atrix hardly made it through the day. I read several suggestions and wanted to share how I increased battery life by almost 100%!! Like mentioned earlier I was puzzled that even in idle status there was a 10-15% drain. The only logic explanation was that there are services that continue in the background and drain the battery.
1. I think the absolute biggest battery drain is to enable wifi triangulation for location services. The fact that the pop-up window states "...Collection will occur even when no applications are running." should have made my suspicious. I have noticed that enabling the GPS does not have any significant effect on battery life as long as you do not have any applications open that use that radio (like maps). Obviously I disable the wifi option in location services.
2. Root your phone and download Titanium Backup PRO. Disable all Motoblur services. I do not use any Motoblur widget/services (no facebook, twitter and so on) and am happy with the native gmail client. I literally froze allmost all of the motoblur services as well as other services that may use data services in the background (news, weather services).
Following link gives a good overviw which services can be disabled without any problems:
Death-Force • Thema anzeigen - [TIP][Tutorial] Freeze Motoblur for more Performance and RAM
3. I haven't really found it helpful to use setcpu. Whats the point of having a ferrari and driving it at 30 mph?
Since making those changes I have seen a significant increase in battery life. Using the gmail client, bluetooth+GPS+wifi+3g on, screen set to auto-brightness and mdoerate use throughout the day I make it easily throughout the day with the battery indicator showing in general 30-40%. I think step 1 made the biggest difference. Again, this phone is just amazing and I do not miss my IPhone at all!
No way!?!?

Because you don't want your Ferrari to use up gas while you're not driving it?
With SetCPU, you can set a profile for it to throttle down several hundred mhz whenever the display turns off. I find that even background services like Pandora can run perfectly fine even when that dualcore "ferrari" of a machine has the display off at half the ghz.
Using setCPU alone, I feel like me battery life doubled. I recently froze motoblur in its tracks and only provided minimal increase compared to just underclocking it.

my trolling = quotes and screen shots of Dumb and Dumber.
its amazing how experiences vary from user to user. i had installed setcpu the 2nd day that i had the atrix and didnt really notice a big improvement (with it properly set up to save battery). i froze the blur settings and the weather widgets and can easily get through a heavy days usage. i find the atrix is at least as good, if not better when it comes to battery life.
i leave the wifi and cellular location option on and my battery life is great. i dont have widgets or apps running in the background that need my location and i even say no when google asks for permission to use my location for better search results. disabling this feature would make a big difference for people that use location aware apps often but i find it takes far too long to get a good gps lock when using maps if this feature is off.
as long as you are happy with your battery life, thats all that matters
Never used setCpu on my phone. battery lasts for awhileeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
setcpu is not necessary the cpu automatically throttles down when not in use, the phone doesnt run at 1ghz all time...
ive noticed with the atrix you need to turn off gps when you are not using it or it will still be on even when no apps are using it. my captivate used to turn off gps when i exited an app that was using it. im not sure if this is the case with wifi too.
After playing a long time with phone I found synchronized apps like talk, gmail, take up most of the battery.

Can anyone confirm this? I would really prefer not to use setcpu unless I have to

Objective data on performance differences with Encrption on vs off

In the development forum, there is now a method to disable encryption with or without root. Many people say the phone feels faster with encryption off, and battery life is improved. I wonder how much of this is placebo effect? We have two Nexus 6 phones. We turned encryption off on one to compare. AnTuTu was around 51,000 on the encryption off phone, and 50,000 on the stock phone. We cleared all open apps, and tested different things simultaneously. We could not see any difference in camera start times, phone app opening times, Photo gallery opening, Chrome opening time, etc.. The only noticeable difference was when we turned the phone on after being off. The stock phone takes about 15 seconds longer to turn on. My son thinks battery life is better, but we have not done an objective test with a good measurement. Anyone else have real data?
performance, as in phone speed is not affected. what is affected is the speed it reads and writes to your storage, that is it. this is an antutu of a nexus 6 that is still encrypted. again, it only affects read and write speeds to your storage.

I bet if you took all the people *****ing about the encryption and handed them a random phone, they wouldn't have an idea if encryption was enabled or not.
I've not noticed performance difference either way. I don't like being forced into it though.
If battery performance is really better, i would be interested in doing it....
I'm not seeing any difference in usage after decrypting.
I realise this is a nexus 6 forum, but I'm still waiting for mine,
Anyway, heres a video I made showing the difference on the n5
Nexus 5 - Android 5.0 Lollipop - Encrypted vs Une…: http://youtu.be/2gmdRlg0vag
Quite honestly I run Encrypted now and I don't notice
I'm still encrypted and haven't noticed anything. Granted, i would like the camera a little faster but no big deal.
It seems as though there's another variable in this equation...different memory modules in Nexus 6 units:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/nexus-6-internal-memory-chipsets-t2955045
Yeah I've been both ways and can't tell a whole lot. Plus like the guy above me just mentioned we got different memory.
If we break it down into its basic parts this is the pros for each.
Disabling encryption:
-less CPU overhead
-significantly faster disk I/O
-less CPU overhead=less battery usage( potentially minimal)
-Faster boots
Encryption On:
-safer data
-maybe something I missed
Now its completely possible that all of the pros for decrypting are so minimal they will be hardly noticeable. So basically you have to decide what's more important to you. Personally I haven't needed decryption since I've owned a G1, and I would rather have my phone run more efficiently, though its possible you may choose different.

In that thread, I can draw no meaningful conclusion about the different vendors used for RAM/Flash.
I suspect it's a non-issue (other than perhaps statistically seeing a fractional of percent differences between the vendors). The differences in doing software encryption would over shadow any vendor's RAM/Flash differences IMHO.
I would put more energy and thought in getting Qualcomm / Google to get hardware assisted encryption going (releasing the libraries).
Has anyone been able to compare CPU usage during storage benchmarks for encrypted vs unencrypted? I think the idea here is that the CPU is doing the decrypting and therefor limiting the speed that we can access data. If that is accurate, we should see 100% CPU usage during storage benchmarks when the phone is encrypted and something less than 100% when decrypted.

Most govs have absolutely no f's to give about what I have on my phone.
I turned it off the instant I got to my laptop. don't need it, don't want it, have no use for it.
It shouldn't matter whether there is a tangible performance difference to the user or not. The truth is there objectively IS a performance hit with memory read/write, and first and foremost, they are forcing encryption onto people without a choice, on a platform that is all about choice. It is like anonymous user stats. I usually leave it unchecked but I wouldn't really care if I forgot to uncheck it. But once that checkbox disappears and you can't do anything about it, well that's a problem for me. Encryption of my data? No I want my data to be free and unencrypted especially if I may need to access it without encyption keys thank you very much.

Putting the 2-day battery life claim to the test

I'm usually a fairly heavy user, but this week I haven't been quite as hard on the Z5C as I normally am, and I saw it as a chance to test the 2-day battery claims.
Everything was left turned on as per usual - Wifi, Bluetooth, LTE and the like were left on for the most part. Screen was on auto-brightness, all the usual stuff. I didn't try to 'milk' it for more. I didn't use any of the battery life extending modes.
52 hours and 26 minutes later, with 4 hours and 26 minutes of screen-on time, I was at 2%. I'd definitely call that a pass.

that's amazing.. im experiencing 9 hours of battery life with 10 mins screen on time, trying to figure out how to fix wake lock with sonys tasks app and some calendar storage app but seem to be completely unsuccessfull in this... you think if i do a factory reset of the device that'll fix it?

Mine is changed out now because of faulty lens but I've used it for a few days and I got same usage as OP.
you might want to perform a full factory reset and if it doesn't solve your problem return it to Sony for warranty.
Also, do not close the recent apps constantly. Let them run in background will improve the way lollipop (and soon marshmallow) runs.

thanks i've just done a factory reset and unfortunately still same two processes are holding up hundreds of wakelocks on my devices not sure how to further troubleshoot / fix this..
processes are :
com.android.providers.calendar
com.sonymobile.tasks
does anyone know what those processes do and how i can go about just removing them or replacing with something not buggy? will be leaving for an overseas trip in a weeks time (away for a whole month) and this new phone which i got especially for it (good camera and waterproof) will be completely useless to me if the battery keeps failing on me. love the phone so far but this battery issue is killing my transition experience
had full charge at 9am and now at 4pm already at 33% battery life

for testing purposes.. do you have a calendar app? can you disable it? or clear the cache from settings >apps...There is some rogue app that is constantly accessing storage.. I've had it happen on my old phone with custom ROM.. also do you have exchange/gmail sync try changing that
for battery problems you can use Wakelock Detector without root (following the guide in the google play page https://www.google.com/url?q=https:...A&sa=D&usg=AFQjCNFCL0Z8eiWrc0xTYvz2hQAgPd3xoA ) and, if you find system apps that can't be disabled manually, you can use Debloater (windows application) http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software/debloater-remove-carrier-bloat-t2998294 which can Hide ( pm hide command) the system apps. I don't know exactly what the command does but i hid three system packages and they disappeared from the running processes list: either they are completely hidden from the system or they are stopped and not running. For example, i hid the Software firmware upgrade app and its settings in Phone Info disappeared along with the Software upgrade notification in status bar.
My battery life was fine until I recently updated to latest fw version using Flashtool. I can't update the phone with PC Companion anymore. I'm a heavy user, I play games, watch videos, check social networks, listen to music, download apps etc. But before using flashtool battery can last me a day or so. I don't think it could last more than a day if I don't use it. At night, for example, sometimes I let the phone idle, even with stamina mode on, the phone drains 1% per hour. I don't think that's good. I hope with the marshmellow update battery can improve.

do you set up your phone after a factory reset?
U should try this: factory reset, not completely set up phone, only necessary apps like WhatsApp, Google account etc, maybe disable or remove the unneeded apps and then keep using the phone for 2 - 3 charge cycles. Then all should be good. If not, return the phone. If all is good by then, u know it's not fault of firmware or phone but fault of some app u installed.

Did u flash userdata.sin (factory reset)?
I really can't believe some people having this bad battery life.
It must be some bad app or something, I think..
The only way to test is full factory reset including wipe internal SD and then test the phone without fully setting everything up (installing apps etc)
I think I'll do a factory reset. But maybe when the marshmellow update comes, I don't want to have to set everything up again. Btw if I want to update phone flashing a new fw via flashtool is it recommended to do a factory reset before or after updating? Thanks

Mine has only maybe 30ish % left in the evening after one day with some youtube on the bus to and from work and random email and IM check ( 3-4 hours screen on total). Maybe it's youtube taking away all my battery...
I suspect it can only last until noon the next day maximum if I do my normal use and don't push it on power saving.... I don't know if I can call it a pass.. I guess it's somewhere between a pass and fail to me..
but, I do notice that it drained very fast in the first few days when I bought the device. After using it for a week it's a lot better. So if anyone is wondering why the battery life on your new device is really bad, try use it for a few days.

Battery drain edge plus

hi, everywhere i've read all over the internet seems to me that no one has actually a clue as to why samsung phones are using a lot of batter..ie my galaxy s6 edge plus on uk vodafone..100% in the morning need to recharge it again at 6 or 7 oclock with light usage...lots of people are having similar issues with samsung devices, all saying its the android system or android os using it as you can see that when you go into your battery settings, beyond that its all mystery...then you get ....turn this off, disable that, power save that, get wakelock detector, task detector. Phoned samsung this morning they said it was the battery...oh dear me...they would replace it for me, i would have to be without a phone for a few days...that was their answer....the phone is 2 months old with light usage, had iphones in the past, not one problem, since android, im now paranoid in making a call and sending a text incase the battery dies...you shouldn't have to disable features on a phone that was made for that phone, there is clearly a fault in the software, so im asking the super experts here if they can actually pin point the problem thanks, its happening a lot, so there clearly must be a bug in the system software somewhere...and its not my apps, only got half a dozen installed, and i ve reset, cache cleaned, reinstalled one app a time, tried it with no apps installed, always the same...android os or android system between 12% to 87%...thanks to anyone that helps
I'm having the same issue. Last week before the 6.0.1 update I rooted my S6E+ and it started going into a boot loop. So I put stock rom back on again and left it. But the battery is terrible since. I thought the update to 6.0.1 would help but it's the same. At night (10pm) I'd put into airplane mode at 100% and by morning (7am) it would still be 97%. Now in the morning it's 43%! It's losing 57% overnight in airplane mode.
Any help really appreciated!

I aware you have trip the knox and that cause Doze fail to start when it is on idle.. Please check your knox via Phone Info *Samsung* via playstore and if it shows 01, that means the knox is tripped..
By placing the root, leaving the stock firmware the device does not go into deep sleep and then consumes the battery.
You must flash a kernel for MM
Battery drain is caused by a lot of factors. The truth is that there are a lot of apps/services on your phone that you don't actually need/use. Google for example tracks location, syncs your account, backup, etc. All these services are running in the background and eat up juice. Android is different than iOS, so you need to disable some apps/services that you don't need to prevent them from running. There's also a lot of apps that have the "wake up phone" permission enabled or "keep phone awake", that even though your screen is off, will sync and do stuff. There used to be a method in Lollipop to prevent an app/service from waking up your phone, but I can't find it in Marshmallow (yet).
I'd recommend to root your phone, install TitaniumBackup/Package Disabler/etc. and freeze all apps/services you don't need. Search for "debloat" and you'll find loads of lists that you don't actually need and can disable.
Thanks guys for the help. Can someone give me any pointers (link to forum) where I can update my kernel or root please? Really appreciate all the answers thanks
I am back to 5.1.1 now and rooted.
I've noticed my phone is now downloading the 6.0 update again. Is it ok to install this or will I lose root again?

hi, everywhere i've read all over the internet seems to me that no one has actually a clue as to why samsung phones are using a lot of batter..ie my galaxy s6 edge plus on uk vodafone..100% in the morning need to recharge it again at 6 or 7 oclock with light usage...lots of people are having similar issues with samsung devices, all saying its the android system or android os using it as you can see that when you go into your battery settings, beyond that its all mystery...then you get ....turn this off, disable that, power save that, get wakelock detector, task detector.

I really regret now for buying this device
Battery Drain
I am also facing same issue tried moving to custom Rom performance is awesome though battery drain is something i am not able to understand .Even i tried keeping phone on airplane mode still battery drain .Maximum standy i am getting is 9 hours after light usage .
Any help will be really appreciated .
Install a custom kernel and rom, flash exposed framewrok and install Greenify, Coolify and Amplify. That's how i minimized the battery drain.
I recommend the Audax plus kernel and rom.
You'll find it here with a detailed guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/s6-edge-plus/development/rom-audax-plus-v1-0-t3219017

There is no root available for the at&t varient
You know.. it's such a shame.
I loved my phone but I'm not keen on doing Samsung again. My battery life was horrendous.
Greenify and Disabler Pro h help a lot but not enough.
i think i got the same problem. i rootet my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ (SM-G928F)
After i saw that 7.0 was on the way for the s6 and s6 edge i unrootet so the phone was ready to get it OTA.
But after this it´s using around 40-50% over night
First time i unrootet i used Samsung Smart Switch to get back to stock.
I then rootet and aplied a Deep Sleep fix wich help
But now i want to sell the phone and would like to sell it stock and from i can see it looks like the problem is still there.
This time i flashed the phone via odin and with this file G928FXXS3BQB1_G928FNEE3BPI1_G928FXXU3BQA5_HOME.tar.md5 from sammobile.
I hope someone can help me out to if there is a fix so it get´s deep sleep in stock.
Don't get any phone with small battery. Like 2K resolution with 3000mAh is a bad idea. Galaxy s6 edge+ Plus should have 4000mAh battery instead.
Get Galaxy A5 2017 full HD screen but you get a better battery life.

Huge battery consumption, help needed

Hi all,
I am very satisfied with my device except for the battery life. I always had like 3-4 hours SOT. I was not happy but it was OK.
Lately I started charging the device every day after work (I would come home with dead phone after only 8-9 hours of it being unplugged).
So I thought the battery is defective, I must change it... and I did change it yesterday. The thing is that even the new battery behaves almost the same. It approved somewhat and now I will return home with 10% battery instead of dead phone 1 hour ago. But still the battery is terrible...
Can anyone help me, share some advice on how to improve it? I have disabled many software (even facebook), disabled location... did everything I could think of.
I am thinking some app is drawing the juice but cannot put my finger on any of them.
Some screenshots are attached that might help with your tips/advices.
Thanks!

Are you rooted? On nougat? If so get background restrictor APK here on XDA and kill background apps and tasks so they can't run if you do not open them. Lower screen brightness. Install kernel auditor and shut off cores 4 and 8.

uninstall chrome. Then try accubattery (better bcause after android 7, they join all in android system to mask each app consumption. If after this you still can't find out where's the problem, start the phone in "safe mode". Even the consumption is better in this mode you must do a full wipe in recovery mode (vol up+power+home) and after this, reinstall one app each time and see after reinstall the second one and so on until you find out in which app is draining the battery
If you want you can starting by disabling background data in settings but I think isn't the clearer way to find out
This is going to surprise you.
I've had this phone for years and I've tried everything - and the BEST result is when you DON'T DO ANYTHING except disable Facebook and Instagram, and any Google Apps you don't use.
Do not tamper with anything else.
I figure that Samsung tunes this phone so tightly that if you leave it alone it operates as it should.
Anytime I disabled anything else, battery life suddenly and drastically reduced.
The phones runtime software kicks in and if you have disabled something it checks routinely, it will keep the phone awake constantly looking for a ping back from that process.
I just went through the whole process again meticulously, App by App.
Also DO NOT enhanced messaging OR the device antivirus. If you have, you must reset and then train yourself not to engage these too regardless of how hard The phone tries to persuade you!
Then - the battery life becomes like a normal phone which means you'll still need to charge everyday but it will take you through a full heavy day... And this is fantastic!
Honestly try it and you'll see what I mean. The S6 edge plus is so finely tuned, anything you block will start a feedback loop.
I had similiar problems , the way i fixed it, i disabled/uninstalled all samsung applications what i dont use, i disabled/uninstalled all google applications what i dont use. Cold weather (like -20C) will affect the battery life too.
Disable / uninstall apps you dont need. That helped me a lot and got even more battery life while at stock nougat rom with all updates installed.
try wiping cache from recovery and reboot your phone.
I hope this helps you
