Hey guys I just got my G5 almost 2 months after release. I was one of the bashers at first wasn't impressed with the looks but I decided to give it a chance, looks isn't everything. Got the camera module, the spare battery. Trying to make the most out of my G5 experience. So far, gotta say it's actually better than I thought it would be.
What do you guys think of it? [emoji2]

I really like my new G5 also. I got it on April 8, works great, I can't believe how fast and stable it is. I charge my phone once every 2 days usually - it took a week or two for the battery to get used to me but now it has settled down.

Whoa! Every 2 days. I've only had it a couple of days but so far I haven't gotten a full day of battery, hence the 2nd battery, but yeah it works well as far as software goes; I wish they had worked on the UI a bit more and that applying a theme actually applied to settings. I might be a bit biased though coming from an s7 edge. But it's a lot better than what I expected, that's for sure.

So what's the status on rooting? Is it a no go for our variant?

Try going into dev options and enabling GPU rendering of 2d, and also possibly forcing GPU rendering of screen composite...
I have only 2d rendering turned on my H850 and I reg get 40hrs battery life with 6+ hrs sot with heavy use!

Awesome. Thanks. Did not know that actually helped to reduce power consumption. Any drawbacks?

I'm not entirely sure that it does, but it would make sense that it would as it takes the load off CPU and utilizes our energy efficient GPU... Also turn down animations to .5
No drawbacks that I've noticed and I've had it enabled for weeks now. No lags, no heat... Your home screen might redraw when u first enable, but that's it.
Like I said I'm not totally sure it helps power consumption, but hasn't seemed to affect it adversely in any apparent way

No, if you bought your lg g5 through a carrier, it is locked. Even with wind. As a wind customer, I was told I must wait 3 months (after purchase date) for wind to unlock -- and even then, it costs 30 dollars.
If you're here, on XDA, chances are you're better off unlocking yourself. I don't believe there is a method available as of now, but a method may soon be made available in the next year.

Not in the least. Those watching the T-Mobile root thread will know that a root method was just released today, requiring the use of LG developer software and a .tot file. In addition, a fix is needed to prevent package verification. Although the process is lengthy, requiring fastboot, it's quite likely that we'll see root methods for other variants of the lg g5 come out in the coming months.
Yes, there are far fewer Canadian users than T-mobile users, but with time, we should expect to see root on the h831 Canadian variant.

Root shouldn't be hard, if we follow the same process as the H830. Get a TOT and repack it right. But, easier said than done.

Here's hoping. I have (so have most of us) seen this urgency and with real jealousy, watching the poor ugly stepsister (or brother) get ignored: the Canadian versions frequently are low on the priority list. We all should calm down a bit - it will come in time - it sometimes takes 6 months to a year for the bootloader unlock to come about. Those of us who have played the waiting game before have been eventually rewarded. I always have the utmost respect for the devs who come through for us - so lets give them some space and time to work their magic in peace.

I got mine - security patched for May, now sporting version 10D.
Can someone post the LG G5 Canadian variant model number / code name.
I am asking this because my friend wants to root his LG G5 that he just picked up. I realize from the posts here there is no root method for it.
and as for waiting, yes the Canadian variants generally take a bit to get going.
Appreciate it

I believe LG-H831 is the variant model number for all Canadian Retail / Provider LG G5 phones. All Canadian LG G5's included all the friends modules, extra battery kit, earbuds, 128TB SDXXX Card, an iPad, and a Surface Book
Kidding, can't help notice how awesome US promotions are due to healthy competition, compared to what's offered in Canada. Most Canadian providers offered the Cam Plus friend module with the LG G5 for the first month or until supplies lasted.

Because we're ashamed to admit we paid about twice as much for our LG G5 compared to our neighbours - oops neighbors
I've posted a couple generic threads on accessories, etc. Upgraded 5 family phones to the LG G5, working well so far. Have to admin my past Samsung Note series phones did seem to perform better under direct sun. But at least I don't have to worry about burn ins with the G5. Had burn in issues, although minor, with a couple Samsung phones.

I've had every single Amoled samsung flagship and never had a burn in. That is what I consider a non issue. Unless you keep your phone for 5 years. I do appreciate the nice whites and we'll balanced color reproduction of the G5 though I miss the deep black of Amoled.

OK, thanks. So as it stands right now for the H831 -- there is no ROOT / Recovery and ROMs available for it yet. As it is a new device and things take time to dev. Hate to say I am so use to Samsung, so I have never worked on a LG too get root and recovery. I am not in too much rush for a ROM, but root is key. Thanks for the info, keep me posted. I will keep my eyes on this thread
this is ridiculous. I buy the unlocked version because they always get updated first, but here we are sitting on the October security patch and the original software that came with the phone while all of the carriers have been getting updates the past two months.

According to this, 10f was officially released on the 4th. You can use LGBridge or try software update in settings to get it.

I trusted Samsung when they said that the updates for the unlocked US models will be handled a lot better. The carrier versions started receiving May 2017 security updates. It may be little bit to early to declare that Samsung is sticking to their old habits/shenanigans but ill be jumping to Essential phone if i do not see updates coming by the time Essential is out for sale.
Anyone received updates for the unlocked USA model?
Could of swore you could flash one of the canadian xac firmware on the american phones, kinda defeats the purpose though but it is another option. What security patch is the unlocked s8 on?
April 1, 2017
Give Samsung time, they have hundreds of different Systems they have to build and make. Give them time.
XAC has been updated to AQEJ and that was a few days ago. I see TMO is the only US varient that has received a updated this month so far but all off out firmware is the same, only thing different is user data. So you could download the TMO software and flash the normal files minus user data and that will be your unlocked U firmware.

Take one for the team. Mine is not unlocked and still owed on. So if I screw mine up there is no warranty. I had success with OneClick in the past on my LG G2 when i couldnt get any other way to work. It could be that one click assumes it can be rooted by seeing that its an LG. Might not know its actually a V35 or an older LG.

The pre-July Oreo bootloader exploit we use for V30/V30+/V30S can't be used on V35. LG/Google patched it in July 2018. No pre-July Oreo KDZ for LG V35.
Not enough people own this niche phone for devs to care. V35 doesn't even have a real forum.
There's two reasons.
Whereas every V30/V30+/V30S on the planet can be bootloader unlocked and rooted.

Right. Those are threads posted in OTHER XDA forums and tagged as V35. If you reply, they are posted to those other forums.
If you start a new V35 thread, you have to start it in another forum and tag it as v35.
The EMPTY V30S forum should be given to V35. Because V30S is just another JOAN V30 variant, which uses same TWRP, custom ROMs all other V30. Very strange it somehow (wrongly) was given a separate forum. All the V30S owners use the regular V30 forum, because it's V30!

Well that just sucks. I didn't look carefully. How ridiculous that there is still no dedicated forum. We are the bastard child between the V30 series and the V40. LG really dropped the ball on this one. I still really love the phone. Battery, camera, and general smoothness of operation, but I really want an option once they stop supporting this device (which I bet is going to be before the V30 series). I'm surprised that Google sold me this phone knowing that updates are rare. It's still running this LG version of 8.0.0 Not even 8.1, and it's still on the Sept security patch. I wonder if I can talk Google/Fi into refunding me and getting me a Pixel. I just love vanilla android and have had only nexus phones since the nexus 1.
So I was in touch with a PFi rep. I was told flat out I would be able to unlock the bootloader. I need to follow up with LG

My problem is i just want sim unlock. My carrier wont do it for me. Im still under contract.. Thing is i have 2 carriers...2 plans. I use one for just calls and very light data..(Contract-Carrier) and the other sim i put instead when i want unlimited 4g hotspot im paying 80 bucks a month for. Or when im in a bad signal spot for one. And my carrier wont unlock the phone till its paid off. The store rep told me i would be able to swap the sims just fine.. that it comes unlocked.. whatever dude.... and im stuck with the 80 dollar plan as well. Someone told me that there are some legit not scam unlockers out there. But my google ends up empty. So is there any way to get it sim unlocked currently since my carrier wont help? I know on my G2-G4 's i just flashed new bootloader and roms and i could swap out sims just fine.. And when i needed warranty or store support i would flash back to stock. Is that what we have to do to the v35?
Is anyone else stuck on the May 1st patch that has the U1 (Unlocked by Sammy)?

Samsung does update their unlocked phones last after all of the carriers have signed off on updates. I've been reading complaints about this since Samsung started selling unlocked phones in North America but it's completely deliberate if frustrating.
In the past it was Unlocked then carrier. My understanding was that the carrier models took longer because of all of the bloat they pushed the update had to not interfere with that and it not interfere with the update. Now it has become a pay to play type field where the carriers seem to be saying hey who's more valuable, our 50,000 units or the independents and their 1,200 units?
Anyway on an up note, for those who don't have the update... I know how can that be an up note, but for those who don't have it, there were several articles about glitches with the update. After the phones last reboot it was asking users to input a password, even if none had been set. If one was set it didn't work anymore and I believe the only resolution was a factory reset. No big deal if that was something you planed on doing anyway or if factory resetting worked, which I'm not 100% it did. They quickly halted the roll out and were supposed to be recoding it.

So maybe it's a lucky thing we haven't gotten it yet.
Yep still stuck in May here too. I agree it's frustrating that we're usually months behind on getting new features and always last getting security updates. But I am happy that we didn't get that last update that made people factory reset to get into their phones.
Same here
I actually called Samsung yesterday. Sure enough, they blame it on the carrier.....sad.

You might be thinking of international unlocked models that were purchased for use in the US when you say that in the past Samsung provided updates for unlocked models before carrier updates.
Samsung didn't officially start selling unlocked phones in the United States until a couple years ago (I think with the S8) and it has always been Samsung's policy to update the US unlocked phones after all of the carriers have approved the update.
The unlocked international S10 phones are on the July security patch.
Here in the UK the unlocked models get updated first, then around a week or two later the carriers get it. That's been my experience with my Vodafone version S10+, atm the BTU CSC has the July update but still waiting on mine, doesn't bother me too much tho.

In the US Samsung and Apple have a virtual duopoly thanks to the carriers which might be why those carriers are given priority here--unlocked phones are a tiny segment of the market in this country. Phones from Xiaomi, Huawei and Honor aren't available here except as unlocked imports through the mail with no warranty or support.

I'm definitely tempted to update to a U firmware instead of using the default unlocked firmware. It is super disappointing to get updates last. It used to be the reason to get unlocked phones...
I am on AT&T and I got the June update either the last week of June or the first week of July I want to say.
My wife's unlocked s8 + already got the July update! My unlocked s10 plus is still on may.
How is this a carrier issue? Samsung seriously needs to address this void.
It's seriously pisses me off that I spent almost $900 on a phone and it hasn't been updated now in over two months. I just checked the settings and it says the phone was last updated on May 29th. That's over two months. if there was a clear guide to follow I would have updated to the AT&t firmware by now but it's been many years since I did anything with Odin and I don't want to risk screwing up my phone....ugh
We need to contact Samsung
