Google Assistant - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently enrolled in the Android Beta program and running the most current Android version.
I also have the most recent Play Services version.
I have an unlocked 6P, purchased from the Google store in the US, but am now living overseas in Qatar.
I've read that Google Assistant will be available for my phone, but only to users in the US, UK, and Germany at first. Does anyone know 1.) If that will apply to my phone, and 2.) If so, is there any way to shortcut the geographical issue and receive the update like I was in the US?
Thanks for your help.

Hi... Try reading this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/how-to-force-enable-google-assistant-t3567560
There are also plenty of other threads over XDA or internet to force assistant. I think the downside is that you'll have to root your phone (at least temporarily to edit build.prop) to reach your goal.
Someone may correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck.

Yeah I was thinking rooting might be the next step....I used to root like crazy back in the Galaxy S2 days, but since Moto X and now 6P, I've been trying to embrace barebones stock Android.
Thanks for the tip.

How to get the US Play Store

Hello everybody, first post here but been a lurker here for the past few weeks with my new s3.
Ever since I moved overseas from the US their has been many limitations of the web, the play store in my country, i dont mean to be mean, is complete $%#@, most of the s3 owners are perverts, the most downloaded app is something about Naked Ladies. Anyway, I have a rooted phone and I really don't want to use any kind of VPN, their slow, unreilable, and make me put on a passcode which I don't want.
If their is any tweak or hack to get the US playstore that would be wonderful to share, plus I have a US credit card and make sure my phone doesn't use my location services.
Thanks for reading (=

Play store should use localization from the firmware, me thinks. Also, checks build.prop.
If you got a international SGS3 one easy solution would be to flash a European (UK could be best for you) firmware and CSC, then setting localisation to UK. Or, you can flash a AOSP firmware which should be location "free" (except for localisation in settings for UI/Keyboard etc). The AOSP/AOKP builds around are still not 100% perfect though, if you care about such things.
Google for market enabler...
it might give you the apps available in the US but not the services like books, music, movies...

If you can, may please post a link of one?
And what if you already have a custom rom?
I used Market enabler but used a VPN to get free scrabble from US play store but uninstalled them after that, but can still see scrabble in account

Market enabler is the way to go. The play store region is determined by a combination of carrier & country code from your SIM + geo-IP.

Here ya go... enjoy. BTW what country are you in?

I'm in China and I have the same problem. Market enabler allows you to SEE the apps from another country but you still can't buy them. So it's a little bit anoying. If you go on Google play from a computer you can see all the apps.
I've bought apps fine with the market enabler.

[VOLUNTEER NEEDED] Anyone Who Is Buying a Google Experience One

Hey Everyone,
I maintain a website, randomphantasmagoria.com, where I maintain a firmware archive of official production Google ROMs for every Nexus and Google Experience device from the OG Droid onward. I plan to archive the Google Experience One ROMs as well, assuming the ROMs actually come from Google and not from HTC.
If someone is buying one, I'd love if you could help me out with something. I need some information on the phone, and you will need to get it as soon as you turn the phone on for the first time, before doing any out-of-the-box system updates.
Here is the info I'll need:
1. The bootloader version. You will have to reboot into bootloader (fastboot) mode to do this. When you do, the bootloader version should be displayed on screen.
2. The baseband version from Settings | About Phone.
3. The value of ro.build.fingerprint from /system/build.prop.
4. IF YOU HAVE AN UPDATE NOTIFICATION: Before applying the update, do the following. Turn on USB debugging after the notification appears on screen. Go into Settings | Developer Options and select "Take Bug Report". Your phone will email a text file to the email address on your Google account. Open that text file and search it for ".zip" (without the quotes) and post the URL to the ZIP file.
This will be unbelievably helpful.
Thank you in advance!

Just a thought. Perhaps this request may be better in the android general section as everybody hear already owns a One so not many will be able to afford to own both.
Also, I suspect that when this device is released, the information you require will be readily available on xda.

When the device is released, based on my past experiences with Nexus devices, it's not a given that the originally shipping firmware info will be available on XDA, unfortunately. The overwhelming majority of people turn their phone on for the first time, see an OTA notification out of the box, and just update it without giving a second thought to the fact that the current firmware info could be useful. haha
But yeah, if nobody indulges me here, I'll probably ask in the Android general section as well.
Isn't HTC archiving the roms themselves? I read that they were going to allow all current Ones to change over to the Google experience edition.

And even if they did, there is no guarantee they'd have the original shipping firmware archived, especially if there's an OTA update out of the box. All I really need is the information in the first post for the shipping firmware. From that point forward, it'll be easy to get all the info for the subsequent updates because XDA will be abuzz with it every time there's an OTA.

NFL Mobile + root = no go???

So as some of you may already know, the latest update for the NFL Mobile app (came out this morning I think) has officially killed its functionality with rooted (or "non stock Android") devices. A story on Android Police can be see here.
At any rate, I saw a recent post on a GSIII forum (here)where the user claimed to have a workaround which, among other things, involved renaming the superuser.apk, however if you're using CM nowadays then you'll know there really isn't a separate apk - instead it is now integrated into the rom. That being said, does anyone have any idea similar to this that might work for tricking the app into thinking it isn't running on a rooted unit? I have no clue myself, but seeing as how no one has started a dedicated thread for this in the forum of the current Google flagship phone, I thought I'd get things started.
Thanks in advance people!
Well I guess it looks like no one has any ideas...? Oh well, a rare swing-and-a-miss for solutions in the xda community
A quick fix would be to just find the apk for an older version and install that one. That's what I'm currently trying to do, there's no reason for then to block us from using it just because we're rooted.

Well yeah, I mean I already uninstalled and then restored a backed up version of the app using Titanium Backup. The problem is - and if you've been a user of the NFL apps over the last year or two then you'll know this - that the NFL app is not like most apps where each upgrade just adds some incremental upgrades or changes. With this app the upgrades are typically pushed out right before the start of the key timeframes of the NFL season: usually an update right before preseason; another before the start of the regular season; another at the start of the playoffs; another right before the Super Bowl; and once more right before the draft in April. Each update is specific to that time period of the season and usually contains the critical information/tweaks/additions/UI alterations specific for that segment of the year. Point being, after missing an update or two, the app becomes extremely outdated and eventually useless. And that's why, in the mid-to-long term, just using the older version of the apk unfortunately isn't a useful alternative. Damn you NFL! Now we just have to hope the xda community will come to the rescue as they usually are able to do

Ooooh gotcha. I didn't realize that that's how NFL ran their app. That's really annoying.
i'm not rooted, but that does seem like somebody went off the deep end with this app. rooting a device won't hurt their revenue, in fact, it will probably increase it from allowing ALL Android (and iOS) devices access the app. instead, they're cutting off access to a HUGE chunk of their fans, present and future. in essence, they're biting the hand that feeds them.
i voted the app down in the app store out of principal alone.
I am extremely displeased with this as well and am searching for a solution. Leave it to Verizon to try to control how you use YOUR phone.
hey is this an nfl app for verizon or a market version for all?

From what I gather there are two different versions - the one that comes on Verizon phones, and the one that anyone else can grab from the Play Store. I have the Play Store version (as a TMo customer).

Awesome, sounds good
Just in posting my thread I got a ton of hits of people freaking out about the new app...lol
FYI, they have fixed the app and it is now working perfectly fine on rooted devices strait from the play store
I might be the only one it's not working for. Wondering if anyone can help.
I cannot get 95% of the buttons to work in the Fantasy section of the app. Not only that, when I said 'to hell with the app' and went to their mobile site (which looks exactly like the app), I got the same thing... 95% of the buttons on the mobile site wouldn't do anything.
Now, on my N7, everything works fine.
Any ideas?
Edit: It was Ad Away. Can't use the app while it's running. Now I'll try to find the hosts file and see if I can edit the NFL entries out of it.

Could this have something to do with me being on the Developers edition of Android N before? I thought it upgraded to the retail edition when Nougat came out???

Ok this is getting really weird. It does not appear under Settings/Wi-fi/Gear. And Networking doesn't even appear under Settings/Google.
1. I thought it could be because I was still on NRD90M, so I used the Toolkit to upgrade the OTA to NRD90U. It still didn't show up. Are you guys all on custom roms ? I'm wondering if this is why you are all getting it.
2. So then I used http://opengapps.org/ to create a gapps zip of the latest Google apps and installed it. And it STILL DOESN'T SHOW UP! Furthermore, I checked and Google Fi and Android Pay don't show up in my app list, even though they show up under Settings/Apps as Disabled.
Am I doing something wrong here?

I am having similar issues to montreal, the difference with me is that I originally had the networking menu under settings>google>networking. But the connectivity manager would always force close on me when I tried to enable it. I thought it might have been a problem with the permissions or having root, I toggled root off w/ magisk and uninstalled google connectivity services and then reinstalled it. Now, the networking option is completely gone from my menus.

Axon 7 Chinese version help (A2017)

So I just yesterday got my Axon 7, which I got shipped from China as it was cheaper. Little did I know that there were different versions of the phone and the one I received was the A2017, which I have been told is the Chinese model.
This is my first actual Android phone so I have fairly limited experience, apart from playing around with my mates Nexus 6P (which I found very easy and intuitive to use), so I have a few questions/issues.
My problem is that the software the Axon came with is fairly different to the "Paired down version of Android Marshmallow ... to be as close as stock android as possible." shown in most review vids, even ones with the 6GB Ram Chinese model - eg. youtube.com/watch?v=xNOql_uuOAM
Here are some screenshots of my phone - imgur.com/a/6pOlh
The main problems I have noticed are:
The lack of app tray.
No google service apps.
A bunch of random, for the most part Chinese (even when system language is English), apps that I can't uninstall or even remove off of the home screen.
Different, non stock android icons for all apps.
I mean it isn't the end of the world, but I would love to get the normal android experience on this phone is basically what I am saying.
Sorry if this is a dumb question/easy fix, as I said this is my first time owning any android phone.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
